duck, <strong>of</strong> all creatures, must be s<strong>in</strong>cere : she<br />

would not pretend a trustfulness she did not<br />

<strong>the</strong> trough, <strong>the</strong> driver, lean<strong>in</strong>g aga<strong>in</strong>st a door-<br />

j)ost <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>n with a nuig <strong>of</strong> beer <strong>in</strong> his hand,<br />

dr<strong>in</strong>ks and exchanges op<strong>in</strong>ions with <strong>the</strong> land-<br />

lord ; <strong>the</strong> i)cople <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> road roll as <strong>the</strong>y walk,<br />

with hands <strong>in</strong> pockets, lift<strong>in</strong>g feet accustomed<br />
