noth<strong>in</strong>g at all but Stepney Green.<br />

In long summer holidays <strong>the</strong> children could<br />

take <strong>the</strong>ir d<strong>in</strong>ners with <strong>the</strong>m and make excur-<br />

sions around and outside <strong>the</strong> forest. For <strong>in</strong>-<br />

stance, <strong>the</strong>y would walk over to <strong>the</strong> school at<br />

Chigwell and <strong>the</strong>nce take a path across fields to<br />

Loughton ;<br />

<strong>the</strong> river Rod<strong>in</strong>g runs through <strong>the</strong>se<br />

fields ; <strong>the</strong>y could fish <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Rod<strong>in</strong>g, which<br />

after ra<strong>in</strong> is an impetuous, headlong stream,<br />

out is sluggish <strong>in</strong> <strong>fair</strong> wea<strong>the</strong>r. There are<br />
