There was once an island <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> neighbour-<br />

liood <strong>of</strong> l^yzantiuni wliitlier <strong>the</strong>y used to send<br />

deposed emperors, simply dressed <strong>in</strong> monastic<br />

garb, to live <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir lives on beans,<br />

lentils, and cold water. I h:ive <strong>of</strong>ten pictured<br />

to myself <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>gled sympathy and joy with<br />

which <strong>the</strong>se unfortunates Avould welcome a new<br />

arrival. They would hold i)leas<strong>in</strong>g converse<br />

with him on <strong>the</strong> glories <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> throne when<br />

<strong>the</strong>y sat upon it. They would expla<strong>in</strong> to him<br />

<strong>the</strong> true nobility <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir own conduct, which<br />

mank<strong>in</strong>d had basely mis<strong>in</strong>teri)reted ; and <strong>the</strong>y<br />

would ask <strong>of</strong> him, or exchange with him, cre-<br />

dence as to <strong>the</strong> extraord<strong>in</strong>ary purity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

own motives and <strong>the</strong> greatness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir reigns.<br />

Ilalf-a-dozen <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se old emperors sitt<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a<br />

row, like old sailors on <strong>the</strong> Conunon Hard by<br />

Tortsmouth Harbour, would be a truly delight-<br />

ful picture. One can imag<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> stories <strong>the</strong>y<br />

would tell about <strong>the</strong> greatness <strong>of</strong> tlu'ir fall,<br />

<strong>the</strong> consolation <strong>the</strong>y wt)uld derive from <strong>the</strong><br />
