River consents progress
Just 18 of 88 consents have
been decided by
Environment Canterbury in a
big review of watertakes
from the Ashburton River.
The review was announced
in July last year and farmers
were told their irrigation
consents would be
reconsidered as part of a
longterm aim to improve
flows in the river.
Many farmers asked for an
extension until September
this year to explore
alternative water sources,
like groundwater.
Aprogress report on the
consent review prepared for
the Ashburton Water Zone
Committee said 18 consents
had been decided. Another
28 were likely to reach
decision, 29 were more
significantly affected and
still investigating
alternatives, and for 10 the
way forward was unclear.
These 10 had chosen not to
engage in the review process.
Three consents were likely
to be withdrawn, for various
reasons including possible
lack of connection to surface
water.
The report said six consent
reviews had been granted
further extensions until
March 2021 and more
2289133
requests for extensions were
expected as some had
experienced delays drilling
new bores and others needed
more time to evaluate
options.
Further extensions were
being granted to consent
holders who were actively
working on plans to assess
the impact of the proposed
new minimum flow.
The review team said
Covid19 and mycoplasma
bovis had also affected the
wellbeing of some consent
holders and they were
monitoring the situation and
could provide assistance.
Some farmers face big
water delivery and
infrastructure upgrade costs
as aresult of the review and
some are worried areduction
in watertake will affect the
viability of their business.
Bonus bonds go
ANZwill no longer accept new money into its
DunedinbasedBonus Bonds scheme andwill
Ben Kelleher, managing directorretail and
business banking at the ANZ, said low interest
Money will be returnedtobondholders.
