NEWS 6 Ashburton Courier, August 27, 2020 Dog complaints down over year Fivedangerous dogs and 58 menacing dogsare among the 6891 registeredcanines in the Ashburton District. Four dogs were classified as dangerouson the basis of sworn evidence and one by the admissionofits owner. The 58 menacing dogs included36 by their behaviour and therest by breed. Council staff prepare an annual dogreport, which is beforethe environmental services committee this week. Staff received 684 complaintsabout dogs in the past year, downfrom 830 the yearbefore. There were 32 reports of attacks (down from 44), 88 for wandering (downfrom 106) and362 for wandering dogs (down from 399). Environmentalmonitoring manager Rick Catchpowle, whowrote thedog report,said there werealso 142 dogsimpounded in the 12month period. Six were euthanised and 12 rehomed. The most commoninfringementbyowners was failing to keeptheir dog controlled or confined37 $200fines were issued lastyear. The Ashburton Domain will be closed to vehicles at nightifAshburton District Councillors agreeitisaway to stopvandalism in the park. Council’scommunity services committee willdiscuss a recommendation thatthe domain’s WestStreet entrancebeclosed to vehiclesfrom11pmto6am year round. Therehas been ongoingvandalism in the domain andrestrictingvehicle access willreduce crimeand other unwanted activity there, says acting openspace managerPaulWilson in a report for councillors. Hisreport recommends night closureand if councillorsagreeat theirThursday meeting, it will go to full council later in the yearfor approval. WestStreet is the main vehicle entrance tothe domain and is currently open24hours aday,but at night vandalism and otherantisocial behaviour is known to occurinthe carpark. Policehave beenconsulted, support theclosureofthe domain to vehiclesafter darkand believeitwill reduce offending. Nighttime closure would mean the West Street entrance is closed off by chainand removable bollards; this wouldbedonebycouncil’s security service, who would check the carparksfor vehicles, escortany out and lockthe gate. Signs wouldbeput up advisingof the nighttimeclosure and who to call to releaseunattended vehicles. Council cleaning staff would open the gate at 6am. Thecost of the extra security services has not yet been determined but should be covered by the anticipatedsavings in reduced vandalism. The newly renamed Mill House Kitchen opened at the endoflastweekand is the secondeatery in town for Mr Milmine andwife Nicky,who own andoperate theSomerset Grocer, abusiness they bought from AshburtonTrust in 2016. Mr Milmine said he and his wifewereexcited by the opportunity and were up for the challenge. They had beeninvolved in hospitality for over 30 yearsand believed the new venue was a ‘‘hidden treasure’’. He said the couple looked forwardtoputting their mark on it andgrowing it further. Mill House Kitchen is open sevendaysaweekandoffers breakfast andlunch menus, as well as cabinet food like cakes and slices, and drinks. It is licensed andevening functionsare afuture option for the new owners. ‘‘It’s in such agreat location and it was the outdoor area that really sold it to us,’’ said Mr Milmine. He said there was already a loyal localfollowing andplenty of passingtraffic on nearby SH1. Sir Richard, regarded as one of the greatest fast bowlers in cricketing history, will be the guest speaker at a special breakfastonOctober 8then tee off in the golf tournament later in the day. Organiser John Richards said the breakfastand the golf tournament were two separate fundraising events, and tickets would be available soon. At the catered breakfast at the Ashburton Golf Club, Sir Richard will speak and show some cricketingmemorabilia; he will takepartinaquestion and answersession andalive radio interview with Hokonui’s Phill Hooper. The former NewZealand cricketer played86test matches over 18 years, captured 431 test wickets and scoredover 3000 test runs. He is in remissionafter abattle with cancer. Sir Richard is also alongtime golfer and will take part in the charity tournament .
