They included an airforce great coat, pilot notebook, photographs and aWW2trunk. Stanley orflying officerSW Galletly No. 425894 was asecond generation sheep farmer from Hinds Arundel Road, at Ealing, justsouth of Ashburton. He wasthe youngest child of 13 born to Harrietand John (knownasJack) Galletly. Stanley enlisted in May 1942 and learned to fly Tiger Moth planes at Ashburton Airfield trainingbase during WW2. He formedsolid friendships during the training time with other Mid Cantabrians alsotraining, Warren said. He waseventually deployed overseas but duringhis lifetimewas very reserved aboutsharinghis wartimestories so there arestill some gapsonhis wartime activities. Warren’s younger brother Melvin plans to researchthe entries on Stanley’s logbooksfor more insight. They do know he was apilot instructoronthe Isle of Man, midway between Ireland andEngland, and trainedother pilots to fly, including Polish airmen. Stanley wasalso acommissioned officerand kept on in theUnited Kingdomafterthewar ended. He flew an ArvoAnson,aBritish builttwinengined,multirole aircraft, while there. ‘‘Hedidn’t talk alot about what he did in thewar ... to him it was a matter which someone had to deal withit,’’ Warrensaid. Stanleyeventually returnedtothe homefarm in 1947 and met fouryearold son Warren for the first time. He never flew again. He carried on farming, alongside wife Muriel, and died 1978. Theiroptimism has comein handyinthe past 12 months. Thecouple movedfrom Temuka to Ashburton last September after buying the hydroponic lettucebusiness know as AshburtonHydroponic Growers theyhave stuck with the known brand name and they arecalling their business Lettuce Bee Healthy. In November their glasshouses andoutbuildings wereseverely damaged by hail andthen in February orders for theirgourmet lettuces decreased andthen stopped as the covid pandemicstarted to takeeffect. Just as restaurant andcafe sales began to pick up after lockdown, their gateside stall wasransacked and money stolen. Georgie says they havebeen tested but are surviving; they are continuing to trial new optionsintheir hydroponic glasshouses, which once successful will be available to their customers. Sheworks for Midlands as their HR/HS adviser and husband Dave has beenthe main fixerand grower, putting his years of commercial gardeningexperiencetogood use. The businesswas started by PaulineandRoger Withell about 25 years ago and run by Paulineafter hisdeath five years ago. Georgie said she and Dave wereenjoying the lettucegrowinglifestyle, despite the hiccups. They have their lettuces grown from seeds through QuikStart Seedlings in West Melton and then grown hydroponically (in water). The different glasshouses and plastic tunnelhouses arefull of lettuces at different stagesof growth;ittakes about five weeksfor theplants to mature, when they are harvested, bagged and delivered to Ashburtonrestaurants, cafes andsupermarkets for sale. Georgiesaidlast November’s hail broke about 40 percent of glassinthe glasshouses;the damagedproduct and broken glass had to be dumped. Daveset about managing the repairsand the growing continued until about February,when international tourism began to drop offas covid spread around the world. She said the past 12 months had beenasteep learningcurve as they got to grips with the business requirementsand gave some lovetoageing infrastructure. ‘‘We have had somehard times,but we are here and we will make it succeed.’’ They have met newpeople through their delivery channels andhavebeen warmly welcomedbycustomers.
