AdditionalSmokefree Rockquest Successes
forCollege Students
2020 was overall avery successful year for Ashburton College students in the
Smokefree Rockquest competition, music teacher Michael Petrus advised.
Reflecting this year’s COVID-19 alert level restrictions this year’s competitions
were arranged to be online, with musicians recording and submitting their
music via video submission. These were viewed and assessed against all entries
within each region.
Michael said thatthe Year 13 group Empoly8 enteredthe Smokefree Rockquest
competition last year with aslightly different line-up and that, this year, they
added Revival Tuvale on vocals, Zac Woolf on keyboard and Jay Jung on lead
guitar.
The group has been working to craft the songs for the 2020 competition since
the beginning of this year, and are very pleased with the recognition they have
received in both the Smokefree Tangata Beats and Smokefree Rockquest
competitions.
1st XV RugbyTeam
TheAshHutt Girls1st XV RugbyTeamplayedtheir final round-robin game,
on Wednesday 19 August, againstRoncalli College.
CoachVaughanWardsaid thataCOVID-19 interruptionsaw the cancellation of
the Wednesday12August game against Geraldine High School. Due to this, all
teams received twopoints.Unfortunately this wasagame AshHutt washoping
to take full points from but, following the cancellation, AshHutt was placed in
5th position afterthe fourth round.
Therefore, thatRoncalli game wascrucial to both teams, with the winner taking
a3v4play-off spot.
The match was held at the Hampstead Rugby grounds, whose committee was
thanked for offering to host the match. Unusually warm and dry conditions
added to the already dry grounds, but did allow for some exciting rugby for
those watching from their cars!
Kick-offproveddifficult looking directly into the sun, but AshHutt wasfortunate
enough to come away with alineout which opened the opportunity tostart a
long period of possession, with three excellent tries being scored early, to
MargretEli, Megan Hurleyand TC Trusler-Clark.
Unfortunately, this proved to be the end of the game for Megan Hurley, asshe
suffered aseriousknee injury. Megan is wished all the best foraspeedy recovery.
Roncalli took time to settle into the game but scored twice late in the first half,
and were denied athird due to some determined cover defence brilliance by
Roi Makutu, to forceaknock on one metrefromour line.
AshHutt wasthen able to againcommand possession, and were unluckytohave
not scored again beforehalf-timeshowing abit of ‘whiteline fever’.
AshHutt led 17-12 at half-time.
Further possession and territory from the pumped AshHutt squad kept Roncalli
in their own half for the first fifteen minutes of the second half. This provided
scoring opportunities forsisters Roi and RangiMakutu in mid-field.
Fatigue from some sparked yet another strong comeback from Roncalli, when
holes appeared in our defencelinearound the breakdown. Clever re-startkicks
from Roi Makutu forced errors from Roncalli and again AshHutt was able to
score points from errors, with anawesome piece ofindividual work from everreliable
TC Trusler-Clark to scoremid-way through the second half.
With the score at34-22 to AshHutt, and less than ten minutes to go, another
defensivebreach in our own22saw Roncalli break through and seem certain to
score again, other than for the excellent cover defence from both Roi Makutu
and Naumai Terekia, to force another handling errorfromRoncalli.
Late possession from AshHutt, great handling, and relentless phase playallowed
TC Trusler-Clark to cross the line forher thirdtry of thenight.
Roncalli, however, was determined to finish well and crossed the line again
in the same fashion to close out the scoring for afinal score toAshHutt 39-
Roncalli 29.
Notable mentions from thegamewent to –
Catlin Roberts for her reliable distribution from half back, toLauren Taylor
on her return from concussion, and who offered direction at #10, and to
NaumaiTerekia forher input from fullback, and accurate and dominate defence.
Grace Bleach gave of her continuous hard work and leadership, and newcomer
Gemma Tapurau madeagreat contribution on the leftwing.
3rdv4th Play-Off
At the time of writing this newsletter the team was poised for this important
game, being held at the Alpine Energy Stadium yesterday, against the Waitaki/St
Kevin’s team. We will be able to reportonthis matchinnextweek’s newsletter.
Vaughan said they will be looking to finish well, and that they were pleased to
securethis win.
Unfortunately, due to COVID
Level 2 restrictions only the
1 v 2 playoff will take place,
without spectators.
