We’re on the edge of our seats with this 

must-watch series on Showmax. Oscar 

nominees Jude Law and Naomie Harris star in 

The Third Day, a six-part psychological thriller 

set on an alluring and mysterious island. This

parts. In ‘Summer’ a man visits a creepy island

Nothing but time ... to read and drink wine 

There’s no doubt that when it comes to her novels, Karin Slaughter 

has a sick and twisted mind. Quite possible our favourite thriller writer 

ever! In The Silent Wife, we jump from present day Atlanta, Georgia, 

where medical examiner Sara Linton and Will Trent – GBI investigator 

and Sara’s boyfriend – are investigating the brutal murder of a young 

girl. The investigation takes a wild and unexpected turn, and readers are 

taken back a decade to Grant Country, and a case being investigated 

by Jeffrey Tolliver –Sara’s husband ... and jumps back and forth between 

the cases and the two decades. Just JOY for those who started the

weekend read. She’s just released a new thriller titled Liar, revolving 

around a young woman who is desperate to be a reporter (the closest 

she’s come is selling advertising in the local paper!). When she discovers 

the body of a murder victim near her home, and hears the lies the 

police and reporters are spreading, she convinces the local paper’s 

editor to let her tell the true story. And when another body is found, 

she thinks she may be the one to solve the mystery and stop more 

murders. Michael Joseph • Staying with thrillers – that November 2019 

tour! Siya Kolisi – Against All Odds by Jeremy Daniel tells the story of 

the boy from the Zwide township who beat the odds and followed his 

passion from the African Bombers Club to his appointment as first black

Being an attorney in heart and soul, Varushka 

Naidoo had to make the difficult 

decision between being a stay-at-home 

mom or taking on both roles. 

When she and her husband of nine 

years, Nishan Moodley, welcomed their 

firstborn Kiaan in 2014 she hit the pause 

button on being an attorney while being 

on maternity leave for four months. 

“Today, Kiaan is a smart little six-year-old 

who stole my heart the moment he 

arrived. He changed my life in every way. 

From being a woman who had been 

totally career oriented and who had 

every year planned in terms of climbing 

the corporate leader, to a person whose 

mindset did an immediate 180-degree 

turn the moment he was put into 

my arms.” 

The inner battle between leaving her 

son and return to work to become 

that ‘go to lawyer’ started. Varushka 

convinced herself to go back to work, 

however, seven moths back at the office 

proved that late nights and early mornings 

to fit it all in, was not working. 

She then decided to become a stay-athome 

mom. 

“At first it was difficult to say it out loud, 

but I knew I made the right choice.” 

Two years later their second son, Kayden 

was born. “He is now four and I refer 

to him as my angel from God, a 

precious little boy with the most 

charismatic character.” 

Time for heels and a suit 

Although not being part of the corporate 

environment she continued to 

practice and consulted privately. She 

kept up to date with the latest legal developments 

and what was happening in 

the legal fraternity. 

After five years at home she decided to 

trade her tracksuit pants and sneakers 

for heels and a suit. 

Soon word got around that she was 

back in the market and towards the end 

of 2018 she received an offer from Van 

Rhyns Incorporated. The rest, as they say, 

is history. 

“To me, being an attorney is the best job 

in the world. I get paid to read, write, talk 

and argue. All four things I would do in 

any event. 

“I love the creativity involved in dealing 

with virtually every case or matter. 

In simple terms, it’s not just a job, but a 

profession whereby you are required to 

apply your mind to every detail.” 

Her focus is on family law, which 

includes antenuptial contracts, divorce

Breaking legal 

Her petite stature is definitely no indication of 

how she tackles life as mother and wife and 

her profession as an attorney. We caught up 

with Meyersdal’s Varushka Naidoo, the first woman 

appointed as a director of the law firm for which she works. 

and matrimonial issues, maintenance, protection orders and child law. 

“At Van Rhyns, my clients come from a wide range of industries. I’ve received a great 

deal of experience under the remarkable mentorship of Kevin Hacker and Darryl 

Reece of Wertheim Becker Inc, where I was continually exposed to a number of 

legal fields. 

A first for women 

Varushka is also the first female director for the company. 

“I am truly humbled by the appointment. Throughout the time spent at home with 

my children, picking up toys and playing with dough, I knew I was doing the right 

thing, but I also knew that someday I would need to fulfil my destiny by doing what 

I’ve always been so passionate about - helping and serving others. 

“God is always working in the background, even when we are unable to see it. His plan 

for our lives will always prevail. I believe being a director at Van Rhyns and being part of 

a team of 40 staff members is an achievement as the other directors, Louis Green and 

Andre Jooste, only strive for excellence in everything they do. 

“I still work as hard as I did when I was a candidate attorney. However, there is one difference, 

I now have my own parking bay with my name on it,” she added jokingly. 

A second lease on life 

Varushka is involved in a number of family law matters which she said enables her to 

execute societal change, as these matters sometimes require more than just 

legal guidance. 

“Women’s Month has reminded us there are still so many women who are abused 

financially, physically, emotionally and mentally. It is rewarding being able to support 

these women, not only with their rights, but also emotionally. 

“Especially in divorces, people often thank me for helping them push the restart button 

on life. However, I don’t think I can take all the credit for this. It takes an enormous 

amount of courage for a person to walk through our doors and begin to try and 

explain why they inevitably require a new lease on life. 

“I always tell my clients that new beginnings should happen on a daily basis, the 

renewing and refreshing of the mind is a vital way to progress in life. We should all 

experience the season of spring every morning. 

The best of both worlds 

“Any attorney will tell you law is not a nine-to-five job. A huge plus for me right now is 

that it allows for flexibility. I could spend the morning arguing in court, the afternoon 

as a mom with my children and then the evening into the early hours of the morning 

tackling esoteric legal concerns arising from complex commercial litigation. 

“My hubby and I have known each other for 19 years. We met when I was only 16 years 

old and decided to tie the knot after dating for 10 years. 

“Nishan’s self-sacrificing, selfless and humble nature inspires me each day. He is a wellgrounded 

person who is deeply rooted in his faith. Because of this, he has continued 

to be consistent throughout our relationship. He is also extremely supportive in all 



decisions I’ve made.” 

She described them as a typical South 

African family who are often found at 

home having braais and spending time 

with family. 

“Prior to Covid-19, our family enjoyed 

spending weekends away at local destinations. 

Our boys love going to Sun City.” 

Apart from being a force to be reckoned 

with in court, she also has a creative 

side and said she was born into a creative 

family. 

“Their creativeness must have rubbed 

off on me. I love doing anything that 

involves using my hands, a glue gun and 

a couple glue sticks. 

“My latest creative designs include extravagant 

nappy cakes which started of 

as a hobby and gifting for baby showers 

and then turned into a small-time business 

which I didn’t expect. 

“I also enjoy making candles, especially 

unique unity candles for weddings, and 

I am extremely fond of making fancy 

desserts.” 

Challenges in life and in business 

“I always welcome challenges because 

through pain comes purpose. 

I’ve realised every challenge I faced 

in life took me out of my comfort 

zone and when one is taken out of 

their comfort zone it means growth 

is being experienced. 

“Don’t run from a challenge, rather 

embrace it. David didn’t run away 

from Goliath. He took up the challenge 

and defeated the giant, knowing 

his help came from above.”

Summer bodies 

are made in lockdown 

Innovative and forward-thinking did not grind their sideline business to a standstill during 

lockdown. On the contrary, they were ready and moved their tramps classes online before 

the big clampdown to continue to help shape bodies and lift the spirits of their members. 

We caught up with Samantha Eve and 

Michelle Ashkettle in the beautiful 

Eco Estate in Meyersdal to chat about 

their lives as fitness instructors and 

being business women at the same 

time. 

Born only two weeks apart as Geminis, 

growing up together, attending 

the same school and being best 

friends since the age of five, it was 

only natural they decided to open the 

Tramps SA franchise together. 

Their active lifestyle goes back to their 

school years at Marian College, where 

they always challenged each other to 

do better while competing against 

each other in swimming and squash. 

Later each found their own niche, 

with Samantha choosing netball and 

Michelle becoming a keen hockey 

player. 

This partnership in fitness continued 

after school when they became gym 

partners. 

“We always had a good competitive 

spirit between us. Not only did we 

push each other, we also motivated 

one another to do better,” the two 

said. 

With Samantha owning a digital marketing 

business and Michelle being 

the owner of a labeling company, and 

taking into account their competitive 

personalities, they are always up for 

new challenges. 

And Tramps SA was just another of 

those challenges which they turned 

into a successful side hustle. 

Jump starting the idea 

The two also has a friend in the UK, 

Kristy Ward, who grew up in Johannesburg. 

Kristy attended the National School of 

the Arts, where she majored in dance 

and made a career out of dancing. 

She settled with her family in the UK 



and is the brand ambassador for a 

water company in the UK. 

“Samantha and I met on a dance 

contract. We clicked immediately and 

became good friends. On my many 

visits to Samantha I met Michelle, who 

has been Samantha’s friend for ages. 

“I saw that there were a few exercise 

classes in the UK involving trampolines 

and after chatting to Samantha, 

she decided it may be an avenue she 

could look at and she started Tramps,” 

Kristy said. 

“And so our side hustle was born. 

Tramps SA is a first for SA and we just 

had to jump on the bandwagon and lead the way. Africa is totally untapped 

and we want to make this a big thing,” said Samantha. 

“When we started we hosted the classes in the Eco Estate, which was very 

convenient for most of our members. They will arrive, do a session and then 

go home. 

“However, we started talking about taking Tramps SA online even before lockdown 

and that was just the right move. Not only did we manage to keep our 

members, but we were also able to accommodate them with online sessions 

and even grew our membership with people from as far at Cape Town and 

Midrand,” said Michelle. 

Going online 

“We often had a laugh a minute when we first moved our classes online but it 

sure was the right decision because before we knew it, we were in lockdown 

and fortunately our members where used to online classes. 

“In the beginning it was trial and error, where the digital platform would 

freeze or where dogs would want to join people on the trampolines (rebounders), 

but it was great fun and it is still is,” said Samantha. 

Soon they had men joining in the classes and it definitely is something young 

and old can do. 

“I can honestly say that regardless of what the future holds, we will keep the 

online platform even when things go back to normal. It just offers another 

platform for those who won’t be able to join the actual classes,” she continued. 

Kristy became involved during lockdown and it was easier to participate as an 

instructor or class member. 

Kristy said the most challenging part for her of being involved in the venture 

is the distance. 

“However, the reward of teaching and choreographing the exercise routine 

online is most satisfactory.” 

Never a dull moment 

Between the three of them they make sure the fun never stops. 

“We will ask our members to send their favourite songs and we will choreograph 

the exercise to the song. We have themed sessions where people dress 

up in ‘60s or ‘80s gear, we combine pilates with rebounding, and we have 

boom sessions where they can use anything from a wooden spoon to drum 

sticks to pound. That by the way is an excellent workout,” said Samantha. 

Michelle explained they come up with something new every two weeks and 

the members never know what is coming their way. 

“This is just part of the fun we have while getting the juices flowing and ensuring 

a good workout. 

“We offer three different classes. A 30-minute morning burner, which is really 

good cardio. Then on a Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday we do about 45 minutes 

to an hour full-body class with a nice cool down session.” 

Health benefits 

The three all agree the health benefits are simply something you cannot 

overlook. 

They explained that using a trampoline while exercising is beneficial to the 

joints as there is very low impact because the trampoline pad absorbs 87 per 

cent of shock. 

Rebounding also increases the metabolism, gives you stronger bones, improves 

the immune system, is great to drain the lymphatic system, fantastic 

for rapid weight loss and reduction in cellulite. 

“Simply put, it makes you feel better when you are stressed or in a bad mood, 

boosts your confidence and when you work from home it now offers you 

time where you can have a little me-time and experience self-love and care - 

and to top it all, it is great fun,” Samantha and Michelle explained. 

“Especially during lockdown it gives a moment where you can interact and 

say hello. We need to look after each other, especially during these tough 

times. We invite people to join us to feel good and be part of this social, 

health and wellness environment,” said Samantha.

Fighting off illness and disease is 

helped along by a healthy immune 

system, which gets the boost it 

needs from healthy, mindful eating 

and living. Immune-boosting fruit 

and vegetables include citrus, bell 

peppers (especially red), broccoli, 

garlic, ginger, spinach, almonds, 

sunflower and pumpkin seeds, 

turmeric, papaya and kiwi fruit. While 

it’s not always easy to eat healthily, 

especially when you are on the 

run or at work, there are ways of 

making it easier, which is why we

versatile and easy, you can whip up 

something yummy and nutritious 

the night before, and by the time 

you open it up for lunch the next 

day, it will be the perfect pick-me-up. 

Delicious and wholesome, it’s the 

next best thing to a healthy spread 

at home. 

What you put into your jar is up to 

you, as is your preferred order of 

ingredients. There really are no hard 

and fast rules when assembling 

your items. Either way, the first thing 

to remember is that fresh is always 

best. Next, concentrate on getting 

your prep right by making sure 

everything is washed and/or peeled, 

and diced or chopped accordingly. 

Our jar started off with a layer of 

cooked red lentils, then we added 

quartered tomato and bell peppers. 

Then our greens came into play. We 

used torn Swiss chard, but you can 

use lettuce, kale or baby spinach, 

whatever you fancy. Then we 

added sliced red onion and smoked 

chicken. You can also use marinated 

feta, smoked tofu or cubed gouda/ 

mozzarella/cheddar, the sky is the 

limit. Next up is sliced avocado, 

but bear in mind that if you are not 

going to be eating your jar soon 

after making it, the avo must be 

rubbed with a little lime or lemon 

juice to prevent it from turning 

black. 

Last but not least is a delicious 

dressing, lightly drizzled over the 

top (see our homemade, simple 

vinaigrette recipe). You can also 

squeeze the juice of half an orange

over your final ingredients. It’s 

delicious. The finishing touches are a 

scattering of nuts and seeds of your 

choice, such as pumpkin, sesame or 

sunflower seeds, almonds, walnuts, 

peanuts or cashews. Pop the lid on 

and into the fridge, and your lunch 

for the next day is sorted, if you can 

wait that long! 

A few other items that you can 

put into your goodie jar are diced 

cucumbers, carrots, beans, broccoli, 

peas, corn and mushrooms. Instead 

of lentils you can use pasta, rice, 

couscous or quinoa. Planning

Fresh is best 

it. You can make salad, as we have, 

or you can make a soup for when 

the weather turns. Another firm 

favourite is a breakfast jar, with oats 

and fresh fruit such as strawberries 

and blueberries. The sky is the limit, 

so give it a go; we promise you’ll feel 

better than ever! 

Dressing 

• Juice from ½ lemon 

• 2 tsp apple cider vinegar 

• 5 tbs olive oil 

• ½ teaspoon dried herbs 

• Salt and cracked black pepper 

to taste 

• Chilli flakes (optional).

Susan has used the Serena Ikat print in pink

classically French, with this provincial stripe

crockery (we’re green with envy), but we’re

We’re planting … 

Osteospermum Flowerpower Magic 

Orange 20, a glowing orange daisy 

with sunny yellow tips ... a bright 

perennial which flowers mainly in 

spring and autumn. This hybrid of 

the spring-flowering, 

indigenous Cape daisy 

is hardy and vigorous, 

tolerating cold and rain. 

It is a well-branched, 

low-growing plant that 

is covered with masses 

of flowers, so excellent for 

garden borders, beds, 

and containers. For 

a real show-off bed, 

group three to five 

plants together ... lovely. 

Plant in full sun or partial shade 

in well-drained soil, and water 

regularly, for consistently 

moist, but not soggy, soil. 

You should also fertilise 

once a month during the 

flowering season and removed 

faded or dead flowers to prolong 

its blooming. Once established, 

the weeds will struggle to push through.

What to do in the garden 

• Sow annual herbs like basil, 

coriander and rocket. Trim back 

perennial herbs and enrich the beds 

with compost. 

• Increase watering from once a week 

to twice a week as the temperatures 

rise, especially for vegetables. 

• Keep deadheading, watering, and 

fertilising pansies, violas and primulas 

and they will continue flowering 

until early October. 

• Plant bedding begonias for nonstop 

summer colour ... they’ll grow in 

semi-shade or full sun. 

• Lift and divide flowering perennials. 

• Fertilise lawns with 5:1:5 and begin 

regular weekly mowing – but set the 

blades high so that the grass can 

establish deep roots. 

• Veggies to sow this month are 

cabbage, spinach, Swiss chard, 

lettuce, root veggies, green beans, 

brinjals, cucumber, peppers, bush 

and trailing squash, sweetcorn, 

and tomatoes. 


In the veggie garden, we’re 

planting beetroot – an 

excellent early-spring crop 

since it germinates in cool 

soil. Chioggia (pronounced 

kee-OH-jee-ah) Guardsmark 

is not just any beetroot. The 

plants have bright green 

leaves with light pink stems, 

and when sliced open, it’s 

candy-striped. This Italian 

heirloom variety produces 

medium-sized beets that 

also work well as baby beet 

... its mild, sweet flavour 

becomes super sweet when 

roasted, so lovely used in 

salads. It can be sown yearround 

in warmer areas, a 

spring planting matures in 

about two months, and you 

can order seed online from

We know we’re not the only ones embracing growing our own herbs and 

veggies ... and we know you’re going to love our new discovery as much
