Book club
Hot reads and chilled liqueurs ...
this months book club’s looking good!
There are a few authors who have us leaping for joy when we see a new
release ... and Lisa Jewell is right at the top of that list. Gripping, engrossing,
disturbing, her books are thrillers with heart-thumping, unexpected twists
that just take your breath away. Her latest, Invisible Girl, is about a missing
girl, an invisible man, and how we often look in the wrong places for bad
people and not noticing the real predators who walk freely among us in
plain sight. Century
The pay checks are huge. The work exciting. The drinks flow. But people
sneak into the bathroom for a hit of cocaine, people sleep under desks,
and sexual harassment is rife. The Boy’s Club by Erica Katz is set in a
corporate Manhattan law firm ... a place where if you don’t turn a blind
eye, the boys’ club is a dangerous place to be. Orion
We’re not serving wine at book club this month. Instead, we’re bringing
out the Limoncello. Why? Because it’s summer and we’re happy and in an
Amalfi kind of mood. Also, a few of the books we’ve chosen are
lip-puckeringly, cheek-suckingly, squeeze-your-eyes-shut scary. So a bit
of a theme going, yes? Our favourite version is Bottega’s Limoncino ... you
can find it at good bottle stores, or order online for R325 from takealot.com
The thrills just keep on coming. Shari Lapena (The Couple Next Door, A Stranger in the House
... LOVE her books) has just released The End of Her, which is tension filled, fast paced,
edge-of-your seat. A recently married and new mum of twins may be struggling with the
disorienting effects of sleep deprivation, but knows one thing is certain ... she has everything
she ever wanted. Until a woman from her husband’s past arrives and makes a horrifying
allegation about his first wife. He always claimed her death was an accident - but she says it
was murder. This one’s an all-nighter. Penguin
A missing patient is a hospital ward’s worst nightmare, and the disappearance of a newborn
baby from a maternity ward in a New York hospital creates a city-wide emergency. Then
another kidnapping, and a stabbing, take place ... rumours and accusations fly, and a midwife
teams up with a sceptical NYPD detective to solve the case. But the truth is far more twisted
than either of them could ever have imagined. The Midwife Murders by James Patterson
and Richard DiLallo is a thrill-a-minute paperback read. Arrow Books
Mark Billingham‘s Sleepyhead was released in August 2001, flew straight onto the top ten
best seller list, and was the biggest selling debut novel of the year. Cry Baby - the 17th book
in the Tom Thorne series - is its prequel. It’s set way back in 1996, when Thorne a young
detective, haunted by the moment when he ignored his instincts, and how that led to a
horrific crime. Now on his first case - that of a young boy who’s gone missing while playing
in the woods- and Detective Sergeant Tom Thorne is not going to let anything get in the
way of him solving the crime. Another great read from another favourite author. Little, Brown
Time for a little light relief
from murder, mayhem
and mystery. Hello Greta.
She’s flawed. She’s jocular.
And she’s played the part
of the funny fat friend her
entire life. But she’s hiding
insecurities behind her
big smile - because size
doesn’t matter when you’re
having fun, right?. Warm
and wonderfully moving,
Carmel Harrington’s My
Pear-Shaped Life, shows
us that, like Greta’s about
to discover, sometimes
the best moments in life
come when everything’s
gone a bit pear-shaped.
It’s Garden Day. Celebrate.
Whether your idea of a garden is a
desert rose succulent in a pot on
your desk, a herb box on the kitchen
windowsill, or a manicured-towithin-an-inch-of-its-life
garden with
precisely mown lawn and a clipped
tea and lavender shortbread with
a garden-loving friend, plant a rose
bush, and raise a glass of bubbles
(with elderflower syrup) to our
gardens. Garden Day was created
by Candide, the app for plant lovers,
with the aim of encouraging people
to reconnect with their gardens and
share the joy of gardening. Garden
Day will host a programme of
garden-themed activities like yoga,
flower crown-making workshops,
garden-inspired gourmet and
more. It’s on Sunday, October 11
and everyone is encouraged to join
the celebration live on Zoom and
As soon as the quick introductions
were over and Di had the floor, it
was clear her passion lay in what
she did for a living as she shared her
story which led to the creation of
the award-winning SA fine fragrance,
dimanzi eau de parfum.
She also recently launched a new
men’s fragrance, diMANzi for men,
at an exclusive event held in Bedfordview.
Growing up as the only child of late
Springbok cricket legend Eric Rowan
and her late mother, June Callaghan,
a SA ice skating champion, her bar
in life was already set quite high, but
the drive in her parents also instilled
in her discipline and determination
to succeed.
After matriculating from Jeppe High
School for Girls, Di completed a BA
degree at the University of the Witwatersrand,
majoring in fine art with
English and French as subjects.
Building a career
She was invited to study at the prestigious
house of Guerlian, Paris. While in
Paris, she fell in love with the beauty industry
and returned to SA to take up the
position of the Guerlain area manager
in KwaZulu-Natal.
Despite her success, the entrepreneur in
her called for her to start her own business,
so she opened Le Visage Boutique
Salon in Bedfordview.
Le Visage has been running for 30 years.
“For me, Le Visage is a haven where you
can come pamper, perfume and play.”
She described the most satisfying part
of her career as, “Doing what I love and
loving what I do. I also have the opportunity
to empower other women.”
About dimanzi
“In 2014, Rowan, my late son, discussed
the development of products for Le Visage.
He felt that I knew so much about
this industry and that it was time to have
my own brand.
“We started off with our Le Visage Esprit
room reed diffuser, which has been
extremely successful.
“This led to the idea of developing a fine
fragrance for South Africa on the same
level as existing top brands.
“After some deep thought we decided
to call it dimanzi, which originated from
my name Di and the Zulu translated
word for water, ‘manzi’.
“We loved the name because we felt it
identified with our enchanting African
spirit. We needed a fragrance that
PASSION
paves the way to success
Bedfordview businesswoman Di Thompson is one of those
women with a personality which lingers like a thought, or
rather like the perfect mixture of a subtle fragrance.
resonated with the name, so our first
dimanzi for women is a fresh, floral and
energetic composition.”
There sure is a certain flair about
dimanzi. Not only in the fragrance but
also in the choice of the bottle and the
finer detail, which rounds off the
package and spells excellence
and elegance.
Although dimanzi is produced locally,
they use essential oils from Grasse in
France, which is home to the world’s
greatest perfumes.
Di described dimanzi as a rainbow
floral green fragrance with fresh and
woody notes, capturing the essence
of our African spirit and aligning it with
true French chic.
Award-winning
For Di and her team, dimanzi is
a dream in the making and a day-today
experience.
“We were truly excited to be awarded
Editors’ Choice of 2018 by the SA Pharmaceutical
Revue. It was not expected
but it was truly gratifying that our efforts
had been rewarded.
“We were further honoured by the SA
Department of Trade and Industry, having
acknowledged us and invited us to
an international beauty expo in New
York City in March, which, unfortunately,
was cancelled due to Covid-19.
“A huge disappointment but we are
not distressed. We know our brand is
powerful and we have gone ahead
with many challenges to launch di-
MANzi during these trying times.”
And yes, they have many exciting plans
for the future to add and expand the
dimanzi brand, and these are already
on the dream board to create even
more magic.
Challenges
One of her biggest challenges in
her career was losing her only child,
Rowan, and trying to stay focused
and regain her purpose.
“Somehow, this tragic event gave me
renewed spirit and determination to
leave a legacy and be grateful for his
unwavering inspiration and support.
“As a little boy, he was my precious
pebble and later on he became my
creative rock.”
Your motto in life?
“In business, Rowan and I shared the
motto of ‘there are no shortcuts to
anywhere worth going’ and so we
never compromised with the quality
and service at Le Visage.
“On a more personal level, an old Chinese
proverb has always influenced
me. ‘Life is like a tiger…you either lie
down and let him put his paw on
your back or you get on his back and
you ride him’. Failure is only failure if
you don’t dust yourself off, get back
on your horse, dress up, show up and
never give up. It is about choices, not
circumstances.”
Di shares fragrance facts
• Choose a fragrance that captures
your individuality and makes you
feel comfortable. I believe the way
we smell reflects our personality and
well-being.
• Take your time choosing a
fragrance. Always remember
there’s a difference between a
fine and synthetic fragrance.
Synthetic fragrances tend to
smell the same on everyone,
whereas a fine fragrance will
adapt to the PH of your skin,
and give a true reflection of
how it resonates with your
personal chemistry.
• A fragrance suits you if you
like the smell, and if you get
compliments when wearing it.
• For the best results, never apply
fragrance in moderation …
rather in abundance. Start by
layering it on your underwear,
particularly in your cleavage
area and behind your neck in
the hairline.
• When you are dressed, spray
on your clothing from a slight
distance. Avoid your jewellery
and any silk type garments.
People make the mistake of
just putting a dab on their
pulse points.
• Always avoid wearing any
fragrance where the skin is
exposed to the sun, as this
causes pigmentation in the
long run.
• Remember a fine fragrance is
created with essential oils and
has a true evaporation curve.
In the first few minutes, you
will smell the top notes, afterwards
the middle notes and
finally the base notes when
the fragrance has completely
settled on your particular skin.
• During the day, if you’re in
a working environment with
other people, you need a fragrance
that is not too invasive.
Whereas in the evening you
may wish to wear something
stronger and sensual. My opinion
is that fragrance choice is
more for an occasion.
• People also often want to
know whether they should
choose something flowery or
spicy. Again, this is a personal
preference. Floral fragrances
tend to be more sweet, and
spicy ones more exotic.
Depends on your pallet!
A love for
nature and design
Greg Straw is a world traveller who takes his gardening expertise to the extreme by
providing the landscaping for major projects across the world. We chatted with
Greg at the new location of his Fourways Farmers’ Market at Taroko Farms,
Modderfontein, to hear more about his life.
A green thumb from his young days,
Greg always knew he would work in
landscaping one day.
“From when I was a child, I walked in the
gardens,” said Greg.
“When I was young I was selling the
cucumbers and tomatoes from my very
own garden. When I was in Grade Three,
I won a general knowledge prize and
they asked me what I want and I said
a book on gardening. The headmaster
phoned my parents because they
thought there must be something
very wrong.
“My late father was an architect, so I
definitely think I got the design side and
the gardening from him.”
His work as a horticulturist and landscaping
architect has taken him all over
the world. His company, Land Arch,
has, among other places, worked in
Seychelles, Mozambique, Zambia, Abu
Dhabi, Dubai, the Congo, Ghana and
now they are busy working on the landscaping
of Mark Shuttleworth Hotels
on Príncipe.
“The absolute highlight of my career
was working on the Nelson Mandela
Memorial Garden,” said Greg.
A true outdoorsman
Travelling forms part of what Greg
enjoys most. The perfect holiday for him,
his wife, Zoey, and two children, Sam
and Grace, is sailing around abroad.
“We have done sailing in our own
capacity off the coastline of Turkey,
Croatia, Greece and Italy. That’s one of
our favourite things to do. We sail on
a yacht we man. It is one of the most
amazing things.
“You are stuck together, cleaning together, cooking together and working together.
It’s the best holiday and the best way to bond, far from other humans.”
Aside from his travelling and bonding with his family, Greg is an avid fly fisherman.
“I fish for trout and tiger fish, as well as do saltwater fly fishing,” said Greg.
“I’ve fished on the Zambezi, in Tanzania, in Mozambique and in Seychelles, to name a
few places. The best experience was fishing for the Goliath tiger fish in the Selous Nature
Reserve in Tanzania. That day I caught a 22,5 pounder that was a bit of a record
for that year.”
More than a job
What makes Greg’s work so enjoyable for him is the fact that as a horticulturist and a
landscape architect he can be part of the process from start to finish.
“It’s the egg, caterpillar, pupae and butterfly,” he said.
“You don’t need to hand over to someone and hope they don’t drop the ball. It is
amazing. It’s like having your own restaurant, being the chef and having your
own farm.
“I think this is the key to our success and why we have been able to receive such
crazy projects as the Queens Garden in Abu Dhabi, the Mandela project and now
Mark Shuttleworth Hotels. I just love designing something beautiful.”
While the job is fulfilling, there is one difficulty that comes with his work.
“In many respects, unfortunately, landscaping is seen as a luxury, but it is not. When
the economy is not doing well the first place people cut is in the landscaping.
“Some people understand the garden is just as important as the house, but not all
people realise that. I re-educate people and convince them it is not just a luxury, but
an essential part of the building.”
A love for the farmers’ market
Greg is expanding his Fourways Farmers’ Market to a new location, which as he refers
to the 18-hectare piece of land as a “monster undertaking”.
His love for farmers’ markets has deep roots.
“I love a picnic,” said Greg. “I would do a picnic any day of the week rather than go to
a restaurant. Packing a picnic basket is my favourite thing in the world. That’s when I
thought let’s create a picnic park with a market in it. By creating the farmers’ markets,
you are creating a private picnic park with a group of people who are selling as
a passion.
“I believe in grounding yourself, thus standing on the ground or the grass rather than
being on a patio or inside a building.”
Despite this monumental undertaking, Greg is already looking towards the future.
“We are looking at pieces of property across the country. I want to create a new concept
of outdoor supermarkets in parks that become your new shops. I want to create
a space where artisanal people come together and sell their products. Not just for an
event or for fun and games but where you can do your grocery shopping.”
Lockdown locks
Salons are open (three cheers!) but for some of us, a weekly or even
monthly visit isn’t possible. Here are the products we’re using at home.
Two Oceans has an excellent, affordable range of hair
care products, and during lockdown we’ve been using
Two Oceans Keratin + Argan Range - Hydra Smooth.
There’s a smooth shampoo which hydrates, shines and
softens your hair and scalp. Infused with antioxidants to
deeply condition and revive your hair for soft, glossy results,
we found our hair soft and moisturised. The conditioner is
infused with vegetable-derived keratin and argan oil, which
is naturally rich in vitamins E, F, A & C, so helps to replenish
and condition. R99.95 each for a massive 1000ml, from
Dis-Chem, Pick n Pay and Checkers.
Vegan, made with 100 per cent
If you want to look as if you’ve just
stepped out of the salon, you really
do need to use the right tools. And
there’s nothing better than the new
ghd Helios professional hairdryer.
Light and fast, it offers ultra-powerful
drying and ultimate styling control
... exactly what we want. Features
include technology for reduced frizz
and flyaways, a cool shot button for
a quick blast of air to fix your style, a
contoured nozzle for a concentrated
airflow - and it’s really quiet, too. It
comes in four colours - black, navy,
white and this rich, deep burgundy,
and costs R2900 from hair salons.
An exceptionally good buy ... great
quality, and these dryers last forever.
And while we’re using ghd (at every
opportunity!), we rave, too, about
the Heat Protect Spray (R280), the
Smooth and Finish Serum (a lifesaver
for those of us with frizz, R280), and the
classic Paddle Brush, for mid to long
hair ... its broad, flat base lets you blowdry
large sections of hair smooth and
HOW TO EAT LESS BY
EATING MORE PROTEIN
There are lots of reasons to eat protein at
breakfast. Protein helps keep you full and
satisfied until lunch. And a new study suggests
it might even help curb snacking at night.
If you keep up with the latest in dietary advice, you
can probably list a few reasons why protein is such
an important nutrient. It’s necessary, of course, to
help you build and maintain your muscle mass. And
it’s also known to be a much better at filling you
up than either fat or carbohydrate. That’s why we
suggest that people aim to have a good source of
protein at each meal or snack. The idea is simply this
high-carb meals don’t stay with you, while higher
protein meals can help control hunger from one
meal to the next. But here’s something else. A recent
study suggests that a high protein breakfast not
only helps control your appetite until the next meal,
it might reduce unhealthy snacking in the evening.
How protein measures up
Adolescents are notorious breakfast-skippers, and that’s
associated with weight gain. Researchers at the University
of Missouri studied the effects of different breakfast meals
in 20 overweight teenage girls—who typically ate breakfast
no more than twice a week. The girls were asked to do the
following ... one week, they skipped breakfast each day,
one week they had a high-protein breakfast every day (35
grams), and one week they had a lower protein breakfast
every day (13 grams). What the researchers wanted to know
was how the different meals affected their appetite, hunger
levels between meals, food cravings and evening snacking.
To measure all these things, the girls completed
questionnaires about their level of hunger and satisfaction
during the day, and they had brain scans just before dinner.
The scans allowed the researchers to see how certain
areas of the brain responded - in particular, those that are
involved in food cravings - when the girls were shown
pictures of appealing foods. Then the girls went home with
ADVERTORIAL
a cooler full of goodies, a huge assortment of salty snacks,
candy, ice cream, fruit, pizza, macaroni and cheese. And they
were told they could eat as much as they wanted during
the evening.
When all was said and done, the high-protein breakfast
had several advantages over the low-protein one (and
certainly over no breakfast at all). For one thing, the girls
said the high-protein breakfast was more filling - no surprise
there. But during the week that they ate the high-protein
breakfast, their brain activity was different. There was
less activity in the areas of the brain responsible for food
cravings, and the girls ate less high-fat, high-sugar foods
after dinner. This is an interesting twist on the whole story. It
suggests that a high-protein breakfast not only helps keep
you full until lunch but may even help curb your intake over
the course of the day. Getting in 35 grams of protein at one
time, as they did in the study, might be a bit of a challenge.
But you can get close—25 grams is actually fairly easy to do.
Up your breakfast protein
Here are some meals to try, all of which will give you about 25 grams of protein.
• A protein shake with non-fat milk. A portion of milk provides about 10 grams of protein, and you can adjust the
protein powder in your shake to boost it up • A portion of plain non-fat cottage cheese with fruit and a handful of
almonds • An omelette made with two whole eggs or four egg whites, filled with veggies and an ounce of low-fat
mozzarella cheese • Rolled oats cooked in non-fat milk with protein powder and a dab of almond butter added
after cooking. • 100% whole grain toast, topped with non-fat cream cheese and 85 grams smoked salmon.
Visit myherbalifebreakfast.co.za for more ideas on how to make breakfast a breeze.
Of course, this is only one recent study, and its conclusions are not yet the state of the science on this topic. But
there is good support in the scientific literature for the general proposition that protein intake under the right
circumstances produce feelings of satiety.
Hello Summer. Hello radiance!
Here are two brand-new-on-the-beauty-shelves products that are soon going to be
top of the must-use list. For those of you who’re keen welcome the new season in with
a glowing, radiant skin ... SVR Vitamin C Antioxidant Foam Mask. . This micro-peeling
powerful ingredient that protects against aging and illuminates the skin), combined
with retexturizing, moisturising and plumping ingredients, the mask exfoliates, smooths
and illuminates the skin’s complexion, and reduces signs of aging. We fancy the aerosol
format, too. R750. Also look out for SVR Microgommage Lift – which promises the
pleasure of having skin like new again! This exfoliating mask, with vitamin A, 0.1 per cent
pure retinol, volcanic sand and musk rose oil, targets the accumulation of dead cells and
From mask-related skin
irritations to nappy rash ...
Along with your sanitiser spray, keep
these two Eau Thermale Avéne
essentials in your bag. We’re already fans
of the Thermal Spring Water, which
is excellent for sensitive, intolerant
and allergic skin. It soothes, softens,
and restores skin’s natural balance,
and promotes skin healing. It’s used
to combat facial redness, to calm skin
irritation due to sunburn, razer burn
or after a facial or surgery, to calm
and soothe nappy rash, or simply to
cool yourself down while travelling or
playing sport. Now we’ve discovered
the new Eau Thermale Avéne
Cicalfate+ restorative and protective
cream. Use after the spring water for
immediately soothing. And it’s great
for everything from mask-related skin
irritations, superficial cuts and burns,
localized dryness, after treatments laser
and chemical peel. It’s safe for everyone,
from babe to adult, and can be used on
body, face and lips. You’ll find both on
eau-thermale-avene.co.za, the spring
water ranges from R85 for a small
handbag spray to R229 for a family-
friendly size; Cicalfate costs R209.
Beets. Carrots. Barley. Take your beauty cue from nature
We’re fanatical about wearing our masks (and hope you are too). But what we’re
not fans of are the breakouts they cause, particularly for those who’re already
suffering from oily, problematic skin. The Placecol Cleansing Chlorophyll Facial
is rich in chlorophyll derived from young Barley plants, which helps to
detoxify the skin and decrease surface shine, while also reducing congestion
and inflammation. Combined with High Frequency Treatment, this facial
destroys the bacteria responsible for breakouts and combats congestion. With
powerful anti-oxidants to increase the skin’s immunity and help reduce free
radical damage, the result is visibly refreshed, clearer skin. If you just feel your
skin is a little tired (aren’t we all?), there’s a Oxygenating Vitamin A Facial -
highly effective for revitalising and boosting tired skin. Naturally rich in Vitamin
A (hello carrots), it tightens and firms the skin, stimulating micro-circulation
which increases oxygen and nutrients to the cells. This facial is rich in powerful
anti-oxidants to help protect the skin from harmful free radical damage, a major
cause of ageing. Then there’s the Betanin Hydration Facial ... an intensely
cooling and hydrating facial which contains Betanin, a potent anti-oxidant that
protects cells from free radical damage and gives beetroot its deep red colour.
Rich in Vitamin C to boost immunity and stimulate cell function, plus
generous quantities of essential skin health minerals, such as iron and folate, and
with beetroot’s deeply detoxifying properties, this facial leaves the skin feeling
refreshed, renewed and energised. These facials cost from R475 to R525.
Mint & Ginger Lemonade
Easy to make and really refreshing on a
hot summery day, this drink is great for
parties, too. Just scale up the quantities
and, for those who like an extra hit, try
it with a splash of white rum.
(Makes: 6 glasses. Prep: 10 minutes. Cook:
5 minutes. Chill: 2–3 hours)
You’ll need:
150g granulated sugar; 150ml water;
70g piece fresh root ginger, scrubbed
and sliced (there’s no need to peel
first); juice of 8 lemons
To serve:
Chilled water and ice cubes; 6 fresh
mint sprigs; wafer-thin strips of fresh
root ginger, cut with a vegetable
peeler (optional)
Compiled by: KYM ARGO
To make:
Put the sugar, water and ginger into
a small saucepan and heat over a
low heat, stirring until the sugar has
dissolved. Bring to the boil, then take
off the heat, cover with a lid or plate
and leave to cool at room temperature
for two to three hours for the flavours
to develop. Strain the lemon juice into
a large measuring jug – you should
have just over 400ml. Strain in the
ginger syrup and stir to mix, then top
up to 1.7 litres with chilled water and
ice cubes. Stir together, then pour into
6 glasses and add a mint sprig and
Garlic & Lemon Sauce
This is a mixture that adds a different
dimension to any hummus dish. We
don’t put garlic in our hummus but we
love drizzling this sauce over the top
– the acid from the lemons together
with the bitterness of the garlic and
spiced saltiness of the pickled chillies
make it irresistible.
Stand: 30 minutes)
You’ll need:
From Hummus to Halva ... hello spring food
Winter’s been great ... all heavy stews and lovely warm
puds with custard or cream. But we have to admit, we love
it when the weather turns a little warmer, and spring is a
fabulous season ... all new beginnings and light food and
dining al fresco. Hummus to Halva is the most wonderful
cookbook. Crammed with recipes from a Levantine kitchen,
it’s been compiled by Ronen Givon – born and raised on a
kibbutz in Israel and, he confesses, obsessed with hummus,
and Christian Mouysset – who didn’t taste hummus until he
went to uni ... then he ate it with anything and everything
he could. The book is just a fantastic celebration of food to
share. There’s hummus every which way (with mushrooms
or slow cooked chunky beef (Christian’s favourite dish in
the book), with lamb and pine nuts or Moroccan meatballs.
There are lovely salads – tabbouleh and fattoush, and breads
and dips and gorgeous labaneh – sour yoghurt cheese. The
halva cookies, cardamom coffee and ouzo and grapefruit
slush round off a delicious book. Food to make, to share, to
celebrate. Published by Pavilion.
Fresh Lemon Zest hand wash and
lotion set, R159 from Woolworths.
Two of the easiest, zestiest lemon recipes ever for you to
whip up this weekend.
Let’s start with breakfast. Some lemon curd, to stir into
your yoghurt. Or spread on a scone. Or eat from the jar.
Simply take half a cup each of lemon juice and white
sugar and 60g of salted butter, heat in a pot until sugar
has dissolved and the mixture is almost boiling and
set aside. Whisk three extra-large eggs really well until
lovely and frothy, and then pour into the cooled but
still warm mixture, whisking frantically. Return to
the stove - keep the heat low - and keep whisking
until it thickens (which it does all of a sudden, so
don’t ignore it for a second). Leave to cool in the
pot, and then store in a glass jar in the fridge.
This recipe doubles up perfectly, so make for a
friend, too.
Moving onto cocktail hour ... Limoncello is
one of our favourite summer drinks, and it’s
so easy to make. Start by taking the peel
off nine or ten large lemons with a veggie
peeler, making sure you don’t get any white
pith. Discard the lemon juice (you can keep
this to use for your lemon curd). Put the lemon
peel strips into a 750ml bottle of vodka, replace
the lid and leave for at least four days at room temperature. Once
it’s nice and infused, make a syrup with three cups of water and
two cups of sugar. All you do is place the sugar and water in a
saucepan and heat up over medium heat until the sugar has
dissolved and the liquid thickens slightly - about 10 minutes. Cool
completely, then pour into a jug or large bottle with the vodka
mixture. Cover it, and leave for 12 hours or overnight. Strain,
discard the peels and pour into bottles and chill, preferably in the
freezer, before serving. It will keep in the fridge for a month or so.
Woo bees with a
pink rose bush
Did you know that pink (as well as
white, and yellow single and semidouble)
roses are magnets for bees?
With their exposed stamens and pistils,
the pollen is always fresh, and the bees
love it. Because roses have such a long
flowering season, there are always
flowers, and pollen, for the
bees. Bonus ... they attract
butterflies, too. Lovely!
Roses as far as the eye can see. Not even Covid-19 can stop the
roses from blooming. Pop along to the Spring Rose Festival and
indulge in all the floral senses. There will be displays of roses,
tractor train rides through the roses, rosy refreshments, and
a children’s playground among the roses. The perfect day out
after all these months we’ve spent at home. It’s happening at
Ludwig’s Rose farm from Friday, October 2 to Sunday, October
50 shades of pink …
What’s the most popular rose colour? Pink, by
a pretty mile. And while we haven’t actually
counted, there could very well be 50 or more
shades of pink roses. There’s certainly a pink
for every mood ... soft and dreamy, playful and
happy, flamboyant and feisty.
Here are the newest pink roses:
Pink Polo is a tall, vibrant pink rose that opens
from a classically shaped bud into a sumptuous
quartered bloom, the size of a side plate! The
lightly fragrant blooms are carried on long,
straight stems, so this is a really lovely picking
rose. The bush grows to just above shoulder
height. It is a white ribbon rose, and a portion
of the sales go to CANSA Paarl.
Manuela Crabbia is a nostalgia rose with
huge blooms on strong stems that display
many shades of pink. The silvery-pink broad
outer petals are edged with carmine, and as
the rose unfolds, the centre becomes a soft
salmon pink.
Colette Stella is the epitome of a dreamy
pink rose, with a distinct rosy perfume. As the
many-petalled blooms open into an antique
cup shape, the petals become a deeper, warm
pink. The two-metre high bush flowers from
top to bottom.
Nautica offers just a whisper of pink as an
undertone to the soft lavender shades that
become a silvery sheen as the rose opens. This
is a classical hybrid-tea, with long lasting large
blooms on a tall, neatly upright growing bush.
It provides an endless supply of blooms.
Gloria Mthunzi has exquisitely shaped,
exhibition-class hybrid tea blooms in a blend
of pink, orange, and cream. The rose is tall and
vigorous, standing out in a mixed border.
Coming
up roses
Fresh ideas for garden roses
Mix roses with grasses for a natural look, one that
brings movement and texture. Bushy, free flowering
groundcover Sunsation roses, Deloitte and
Touche, My Granny and Butterfly Kisses go well
with compact ornamental grasses like Carex China
Blue, Carex Amazon Mist, Carex Oshimensis, and
Juncus Blue.
Feed body and soul ... grow roses and veggies
together. Plant leafy veggies as a border for roses and
under standard roses or use tall roses as a backdrop for
herb and veggie beds. They all like the same treatment
- full sun, fertile soil, and regular watering.
Turn your palisade fence into a feature by espaliering
roses against it. Tie the stems of a climbing rose in
a fan shape onto the palisade. The trick of tying the
stems that way forces the rose to flower all along each
stem. Result, a wall of roses.
What’s new in roses
Eco-chic: no need to spray for fungus disease. That
is the priority for modern roses that are bred with
disease-resistance in their genes. Look out for the
‘ladybird’ logo that indicates the Eco-chic diseaseresistant
roses.
Drought-tolerant: roses that can withstand irregular
or limited watering are those with spreading bushy
growth that shades their powerful, extensive roots.
They still produce beautiful pickable blooms on
shorter stems. The new group name for them is
Stamina roses.
Easier, quicker rose care with controlled release
fertilisers and long-lasting pesticides. Controlled
release Vigolonger fertiliser provides a continual,
steady release of nutrition throughout summer. Dig
it in at root level after pruning. Koinor is a drench that
keeps roses free of sucking insects, especially thrips
and aphids for up to six months.
Hiking by numbers
Energetic and challenging or slow and rambling, depending on your mood
and fitness levels, there’s not much to beat getting outdoors and enjoying a hike.
Still suffering a little fear of going out? Definitely. Fear of heading to the great outdoors? Never. While the world’s topsy turvy,
one thing will never change. The joy of getting out on gorgeous warm day, taking a hike, and enjoying one of the amazing
hiking trails our country has to offer. Be a it a soul searching solo walk for a few hours, or a day out with the family, having
fun without a screen or a digital device in sight, you’ll come back maybe a little stiff, hopefully a little tired, and certainly a lot
happier and less stressed than when you set out. We chatted to Thule’s resident hike enthusiast, who gave the low down on
the gear we need.
Three things to look for
when buying a hiking backpack:
1. A hiking backpack needs to distribute weight evenly.
The most important factor to keep in mind is comfort. No
matter how many cool features it has, if the bag does not sit
comfortably on your back and shoulders, then it is not the
right hiking bag for you.
2. Size does matter. The size of the backpack is all important
- work out if you’d prefer a bag that is wider and shorter
or longer and thinner. Obviously a bag that isn’t absurdly
huge is first prize, but think about the duration of your
hikes and how much you would practically need to take
with you for a short day hike (snacks and water) versus a
full-day hike (light lunch, water, additional clothes). Internal
storage becomes a big component here, as it means the
difference between having enough room or potentially
having to take multiple bags.
3. Padding. The key to a comfortable backpack is a balanced
load. Too little padding will not protect your body from the
strains of weight and can cause painful chafing. Similarly,
too much padding will cause awkward and uncomfortable
pressure against your body, which might lead to soreness
… or you standing in a strange way to ease the pressure. A
decent backpack should have padding on the back panel,
shoulder straps and hip belt strap.
Six hiking essentials ...
1. Comfortable shoes and socks
2. A hat which covers your face and the back of your neck
3. Sunscreen - the higher SPF the better
4. Water
5. Snacks or a light lunch
6. A Thule hiking backpack and accessories
Five of the best hiking trails we can do in and
around Joburg
Taroko Trail Park, Modderfontein Nature Reserve
The reserve is home to a number of animals, including steenbok,
reedbuck, duiker, black-backed jackals, Cape clawless otter,
hedgehogs and four varieties of mongoose. One of the reserve’s
highlights is its abundance of bird species. Over 250 species have
been recorded. These include fish eagles, long-crested eagles, jackal
buzzards and crimson-breasted shrikes. Dense vegetation and the
large bodies of water provide perfect habitats for a large number of
bird types, as well as for the near-threatened spotted-necked otter.
Well worth a visit offering hiking trails from 2km to 14km. Details:
Thaba Trails
This is one gem you need to discover. It offers you nature at its best
with a reminder of the bushveld. When you take a breather, you will
spot black wildebeest, impala, springbok and blesbuck. On a really
lucky day, you may just see duiker, porcupines, hedgehogs or jackals.
Trails are enjoyed by hikers, cyclers and runners. You can choose
from the 5km trails for the not-so-fit beginners and then advance
to the 13km or 20km trials. Thaba Trails is open from 7am to 5pm,
seven days a week. Cost for hikers and runners is R20 per person and
R50 for cyclists. Multi-entry discounts are available. Details: Wendell
Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve
First-time visitors are surprised by this beautiful natural asset so close
to the hubbub of the city. It is aptly referred to as Johannesburg’s
Jewel of the South. You can expect to stumble upon larger game,
such as zebra, red hartebeest and black wildebeest. There are also
items of botanical, geological, archaeological, historical and cultural
interest. Red data listed and other protected species are also to be
found. The reserve is rated by many as a birding hot spot, where
approximately 230 bird species have been identified. Hiking is the
main activity in the reserve. The reserve is open to the public from
sunrise to sunset seven days a week. Details: www.klipriviersberg.org.
za
Rietvlei Trails
Located on a beautiful farm called Rietvlei Zoo Farm, Rietvlei Trails
offers a choice of six hiking, walking, running and cross-country trails,
which include a 5km, 10km, 15km, 5.4km as well as a 2.3km sunset
trail. All trails are open from 6am to 6pm, under strict procedures and
rules. Dogs on leads are allowed. All trails are marked with signs and
distances. Please note, there has been no maintenance on the trails
for the past two months so expect some obstacles. Details: www.
views from the rocky outcrops are stunning and you can explore the
very visible trails at your own leisure. Socialised dogs are welcome.
4of the best backpack
collections to choose from
The Thule AllTrail collection is a must for a day hike,
as it gives you a singular pack for all your hiking needs.
An adjustable torso fit is built into the back panel and
combined with breathable shoulder straps, hipbelt
padding and back panel to make even the toughest
day hike extra comfortable - and allow you to stay cool.
All your gear is within reach thanks to the easy access
side zippers and front shove-it pocket. The dedicated
hydration sleeve frees up space for other essentials
like keys and snacks. There’s even an integrated rain
cover. This versatile all-rounder is available in men and
women specific models and comes in various sizes for
you to choose what works best for you.
For something more lightweight, look at the Thule
Stir range. A simple, clean design offers quick
access via the top zippered mesh pocket and über
organisation for all your items. If you want it even
more streamlined, simply remove the sternum strap
and hip belt. Stash water bottles and other essentials
in the expandable side pockets. With a weather
resistant coated nylon fabric and the breathable
backpanel and shoulder straps to keep you cool, it is
a bag that will see you through all seasons of outdoor
adventures. Again, different sizes and men and women
specific models.
For the ultimate in comfort, opt for the Thule
Capstone collection. The tensioned mesh back
panel provides unparalleled breathability, keeping
you cool on your trail, while the high-visibility rain
cover keeps your gear dry during storms. There’s
even a customizable hipbelt that is compatible
with interchangeable VersaClick accessories (sold
separately). There are a host of pockets – on the top
and the side – to keep all your items for the day, no
matter how many family members you are keeping
things for. You can even lash gear to the front of the
pack using the durable button hole webbing.
If you’re hiking with young kids the Thule Sapling
(and Sapling Elite) is an absolute lifesaver. This child
carrier is safe and comfy, plus quick and easy to adjust
to fit both parents, so you can take turns carrying.
On-the-go adjustments are made even easier, as
you can load your child from the top or the side of
the carrier. The deployable sunshade means that
your precious cargo is protected from the harsh sun.
Store water, nappies, clothes and other bigger items
in the zippered compartment and use the extra
roomy zippered mesh pockets for emergency items
like snacks, toys and keys. The ergonomic seat is
height adjustable - the Elite model even comes with
removable stirrups for your little one to rest their feet
on and a viewing mirror – and a breathable padded
backpack and support at critical contact points for
you. All this means a cool and comfortable trail for
everyone. Details: Available online from thule.com
Let’s be honest. It’s been a long, hard slog this year. Lockdown. Curfews.
Restrictions. But now travel’s open. We can cross borders and head off to
hotels and guest houses and lodges. And we can have a glass of wine
when we get there. Life is good. And particularly good, we have to tell
you, if the escape you’ve planned is to Saseka Tented Camp.
The jewel in the crown of the Thornybush collection of lodges,
an escape here is a once-in-a-lifetime treat. Not only because it’s
sensationally beautiful, but also because of the special end-of-lockdown
rates ... it’s one of the few times - heck, perhaps the only time - this lodge
will be South African friendly, cost wise.
So what’s so special? Designed by architects and designers Silvio Rech
and Lesley Carstens, the lodge cleverly and seamlessly combines classical
style with cutting-edge design, and takes attention to detail to a whole
new level. From the roof over the massive, tiered deck which mimics
the dappled light of a tree canopy to the botanical prints on the tents’
ceilings, which, besides being aesthetically pleasing, also educate since
they include the Latin names.
The colours used throughout the lodge delight and surprise ... although
they shouldn’t, since they reflect the hues of the surrounding bush.
Think ivory for the environmentally-friendly flooring that mimics the
colour of the sand in the river below, dark olive, sage and apple from the
Jackalberry, Apple Leaf and Leadwood trees, and occasionally touches of
pink, picked up from the flowers in the area.
The main area, with a sexy little bar and wide open deck, overlooks the
dry, seasonal Monwana riverbed, and has comfy intimate areas for sitting
and doing as little as possible, and dining tables set along the edge so
you don’t miss the ellies stroll past while you’re lingering over breakfast.
Glamping is taken to luxe new heights in the tents ... it’s all eye-catching
black mosquito nets, draped floor to ceiling windows, bespoke furniture,
a romantic bath and adventurous outdoor rainfall shower, and each
with a private deck and plunge pool. It would be unusual for you not to
sometime during the night hear the low grunts and moans of a lion or
the whooping call of a hyena.
For groups of up to six, there’s an uber luxury, private Villa, with its own
central lounge, dining area, pool and an outdoor area which you’ll find
it difficult to tear yourselves away from. Villa guests also get their own
private game vehicle and chef, and children are welcome. Massive spoil!
Meals, too, are created to surprise ... so dinner may be around a fire in the
river bed with traditional - albeit really glammed up - lodge options, or
up on the deck with true gourmet options. It’s all great platters of tapas
or grilled calamari or tempura prawns or lamb loin, it’s mango salsa, and
ashed brinjal, and smoked raisin puree. Sounds pretentious ... it’s not.
Obviously, game drives are the highlight of any trip to the bush ...
and with exceptional trackers and guides and an animal-attracting
combination of terrain, rivers and vegetation, sightings are frequent,
close up and exciting. Although nothing’s guaranteed, this area is known
for it’s leopard ... spotting a massive male leopard on the hunt (we did), a
female with her kill up a tree (we did) and a mum with her babe basking
and playing in the sun (we did) made for an unforgettable trip.
Okay ... let’s chat about the once-in-a-lifetime offer. A stay at Saseka
usually costs R15805 a person a night, but the post lock-down special
(for South African residents only), is R4999 a person a night, with a
minimum two night stay. This includes accommodation, all meals
(breakfast, lunch, high tea and dinner), hot beverages, early morning and
late afternoon game drives, and local sundowner drinks. Extras include
optional guided walks, and laundry, and the lodge does (unfortunately)
have Wifi. These rates exclude peak season (December 16, 2020 to
January 5, 2021). Details: www.thornybush.com
