Looking after our natural environment
Selwyn is an area rich with natural features and landscapes, from the Canterbury Plains and Southern Alps to
the Rakaia and Waimakariri rivers and the coastal lagoon of Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere. It’s important that our
natural environment is protected from inappropriate land use and development, while at the same time ensuring
it continues contributing to people’s economic and social wellbeing.

Looking after our heritage and culture
Selwyn has experienced several waves of settlement by Māori and Europeans over many years. As a result there
are sites, buildings and structures in our district which are of cultural or historic value to individuals, families, iwi,
rūnanga and communities.

· Historic buildings, structures and sites
· Notable trees
· Sites and areas of significance to Māori.
