22 І WEST COAST TOURISM
Pioneers’ story
re-created
Before the world-famous scenery was drawing crowds to the
West Coast, it was the allure of gold, timber and natural resources
that encouraged 19th-century arrivals to the region.
Those forbears who turned up in the 1800s brought a mentality
of hard work, ingenuity and resilience that persists across The
Coast to this day, and their stories are retold through the open-air
experience of Shantytown Heritage Park.
Now in its 50th year of operation, Shantytown exists as an entire
gold rush township hand-built for preserving an incredible
heritage, surrounded by the same forested landscape where
those original gold hatters and saw-millers once toiled for a living.
Featuring over 30 replica buildings, on-site café, heritage train
trips and gold panning experiences just 10 minutes south of
Greymouth, the park is centrally positioned for anyone journeying
along The Coast to enjoy.
A wide range of ticket offers are available, with the $99 Golden
Family Pass recommended as the best deal. This pass includes
entry and train trips for two adults and up to four children, plus
four gold-panning vouchers.
Take a tour
through the
beer-making
process
The Monteith’s Brewing Company offers a fascinating brewery
experience in the heart of Greymouth, at the end of the Tranzalpine
journey from Christchurch.
Here, visitors can explore the traditions and heritage of the brewing
establishment and tase their famous craft brews and modern food.
The guided brewery tour starts with an introduction into the origins
of Monteith’s, which started in 1868 on the West Coast. The tour
takes visitors into the brewery where they can see, touch, taste and
smell the New Zealand-grown ingredients used to make the range
of craft beers.
A walk through the brew house and packaging house with the
expert guide will reveal the process involved with crafting the 150-
year - old beer recipes and the modern additions. Video, visual and
verbal prompts explain the techniques and technical terms the
brewers use, and why they are important.
The tour finishes with a lesson on how to achieve the ‘perfect pour’
at the Brewer’s Tap.
The $25 brewery tour package includes a West Coast Passport
with vouchers and discounts for key activities on the West Coast
including Franz Josef Glacier Guides and Hot Pools, West Coast
Scenic Water Tours, Shanty Town Heritage Park, West Coast
Wildlife Centre and Treetop Walks.
The passport also includes three tap beers at the bar, a
complimentary beverage at various Monteith’s Brewery bars on the
West Coast, and discount offers in the retail shop.
