Walking on Fox Glacier is an
experience like no other.
Explore ancient glaciers, natural
wilderness
They have been around for millennia, vast walls of ice carving their
way over, and through, solid rock as they creep towards the coast
from the Southern Alps.
Relics of the Ice Age, Franz Josef and Fox are two of the most
impressive and are also the most accessible glaciers in New Zealand.
Only 25 minutes apart, each offers its own style of adventure, with
each alpine village offering its own overnighting experience.
Not far from Franz Josef is the much-photographed Lake Matheson.
Nestled in ancient forest, this secluded lake is famous for mirror views
of Aoraki/Mount Cook and Mount Tasman. Its reflecting properties
are due to the dark-brown colour of the water – the result of organic
matter leached from the humus of the forest floor. Dawn and dusk are
the best times to enjoy the reflections.
There’s never a bad time to visit the untamed natural wilderness that
defines the West Coast, but a visit over the coming summer is highly
