While it may only take a second
to spray your perfume on in
the morning, your choice of
fragrance can be a powerful statement,
revealing who you are and the type of
person you aspire to be.
Some of us are consistent in the type
of fragrance we prefer, be it floral,
romantic, woody or oriental, while others
select from a broad repertoire to enhance
or evoke a mood.
Once upon a time, a “signature scent”
was the norm, but nowadays we are more
likely to treat fragrance as an accessory,
changing at whim to suit our diverse
lifestyles and shifting moods.
Perfumes assume a slightly different
smell on each person because of our unique
body chemistries. This includes the level
of acidity in the skin as well as the amount
of oil present in the skin. People with fair
skin generally have less oil, meaning even
rich fragrances may not be as long lasting
compared to those with olive skin.
As a fragrance evaporates, it can be
smelled in three stages, starting with the
top notes and ending with the base notes.
Some fragrances have additional elements,
which fall under the category of middle
notes, while others are more top or base
heavy.
Temperature and humidity play a huge
role in how a scent comes across. A good
rule of thumb is to wear a lighter fragrance
when the temperature and humidity are
higher. A heavy scent can become overly
sweet and cloying in
hot weather.
Always store perfume in a cool place out
of direct sunlight. Fragrance in all forms
can be affected by direct sunlight and
extreme temperatures.
Fragrances have a shelf-life that lasts
only a few years, so don’t save them for a
special occasion. Life’s short – wear the
expensive perfume!
