Dr Simone Matousek is a plastic, reconstructive and cosmetic surgeon based in Sydney. CB: WHY IS HAVING A QUALITY SKINCARE REGIMEN SO IMPORTANT? SM: Great skin is the foundation upon which all other anti-ageing treatments should be administered. Despite having the tools to perform procedures with more dramatic antiageing effects, there is no substitute for excellent skincare. Being disciplined about daily application of skin creams with the right anti-ageing formulations can both prevent and reverse the visible signs of ageing over time. It is one of the simplest, most affordable things you can do to slow the course of ageing as well as see improvements in skin quality. CB: WHAT ARE THE KEY INGREDIENTS WE SHOULD BE INCLUDING IN OUR SKINCARE ROUTINE? SM: Broadly, we want our skin ingredients to: 1. Assist in triggering collagen synthesis, which declines as we age 2. Protect our existing collagen and elastin against sun and environmental damage 3. Improve skin irregularity and skin texture (reduce pore size) 4. Hydrate – dry skin makes all aged skin look even older. An effective skincare routine should include vitamins A, B, C and E, AHAs/BHAs, antioxidants and hyaluronic acid. Vitamins A, B, C and E each have an impact on improving the skin and slowing the ageing process. Vitamin A works by increasing cell turnover, reversing sun damage and increasing collagen synthesis; it is one of the most researched ingredients in skincare. Vitamin B3, C and E work as antioxidants, as well as reducing age spots, pigmentation and inflammation – all of which contribute to poor skin texture and the appearance of aged skin. Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) are water-soluble substances that act as chemical, as opposed to physical, exfoliants (which are grains or seeds in cleansers and also help with cell turnover). Chemical exfoliators break bonds between dead skin cells, making them easier to be shed from the skin. Beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) are fat soluble and penetrate deeper than AHAs and are beneficial for oily skin and clogged pores. The most commonly found beta hydroxy acid in skincare is salicylic acid which helps with acne management. Antioxidants – in addition to the antioxidant activity of the vitamins mentioned above – such as astaxanthin and coenzyme Q10 help protect the skin against environmental damage that accumulates throughout our lifetimes. In times of stress, or due to UVinduced damage, environmental damage or poor diet, ROS (reactive oxygen species, some of which are know as free radicals) measurably increase. These cause DNA damage, increased inflammation and collagen degradation. Daily application of antioxidants is the best way to help prevent this damage accumulate.
