Rekindling the
sound of BUSHFIRE
ANYONE who frequented
Warner's Hotel in the 1980s will
remember the resident band
BUSHFIRE. ey played there four
nights a week for many years and
were the exponents of 'Bush' music.
30 years on and the exhilarating
sound of BUSHFIRE is making a
come back!
“It's amazing aer all this time
how many people have fond
memories of BUSHFIRE and
particularly our time at Warner's,”
says Ian Costello, founding
BUSHFIRE member and founding member and band
leader of well respected e Black Velvet Band. “I've
met people from all over New Zealand who remember
the band. We were doing something different that
nobody has copied to this day. Many people have
asked me if I would ever get the band back together.
For a long time I resisted the idea of a new version of
BUSHFIRE, preferring to let the past be the past.
However, this year I reconsidered. Nobody is playing
traditional Bush music in New Zealand anymore. I
didn't want to see this music die. It's a tradition worth
preserving and there's now a whole generation who
IAN COSTELLO
have never heard it before.”
So starting tonight, the sound
of BUSHFIRE is being rekindled at
e Little Fiddle in the form of
BUSHFIRE & CO comprising
original member Ian (vocals,
mandolin, banjo, guitar) and his
'Co.' made up of longtime
collaborator Nick Jackman (vocals,
guitar, harmonica, mandolin,
banjo), Glen Stenhouse (vocals,
lagerphone) and Seb Warren
(bass). And on the set list... many
th
of the traditional bush songs from the 19 century as
well as songs by later New Zealand folk songwriters
such as Phil Garland and Peter Cape, plus renditions of
classic Kiwi pop songs from Split Enz, Hello Sailor, the
Clean and Supergroove performed with banjos,
broomsticks and bottletops.
