Delivering Christmas cheer to kids: It’s the law
Messenger photo by Theresa Hennis
Several employees of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office and their families shopped for Christmas gifts for
15 children from the Madison-Plains Local School District. Normally, the deputies and dispatchers shop with
the children in the store, but that did not happen this year due to COVID-19. The participating employees removed
their masks just long enough for a group picture after completing their shopping trip on Dec. 10. They
delivered the gifts on Dec. 19.
Law enforcement agencies around the county have made a tradition
of taking area children on shopping trips at Christmas. This
year, due to COVID-19, the kids aren’t in on the trips, but gifts are
stilling coming their way.
“We were all disappointed we couldn’t do Shop with a Cop this
year. We didn’t feel like it was the right time,” said Chris Floyd,
West Jefferson police chief. “Instead, we adopted three families recommended
by the school district. We got shopping lists so we can
do a meal and gifts for each family.”
Making donations to the project were members of the police department
and its auxiliaries, Main Street Deli, Fry & Associates,
and several other area businesses that chose to remain anonymous.
The London Police Department plans to spread Christmas cheer
to the children of 12 area families. Officers will deliver the presents
in a socially distanced manner. The families provided the depart-
WJ Schools ratifies teachers’ union contract
By Linda Dillman
Staff Writer
Jefferson Local Schools ratified a one-year contract on Dec. 14
with its teachers’ union with no increase in the base pay index, but
a jump in health insurance costs and a change in the weekly schedule
at Norwood Elementary.
The former one-year agreement expired in July. Superintendent
William Mullett said the contract was limited to a one-year agreement
primarily for financial reasons and the continued uncertainty
surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.
Both sides met for the first time in-person approximately two
weeks ago.
“There’s really not much change,” Mullett said. “Teachers got a
step increase, but the base increase was zero. However, they will
get the benefit of a bump in pay if they have a step increase (based
on years in service, increases in professional academic level).”
According to Mullett, the district has not had an increase in
health care premiums for 10 years and the board was paying 93
percent of the monthly cost for the insurance.
With board approval, the cost for a family plan jumps from $140
a month to $210. The cost for a single plan goes from $70 to $100.
“That’s untenable long-term,” said Mullett, who said while the
increases are necessary, they are not going to fix the problem
Each Home Instead Senior Care ® franchise office is independently
owned and operated © Home Instead, Inc.
overnight. “The issue with health care is that it’s gone
crazy.
“This was a start. We hope to be able to get to the
point where the board pays 80 percent and teachers pay
20 percent. That’s pretty much the standard with school
districts.”
Another part of the new contract includes once-aweek
early release at Norwood on Wednesdays after
lunch, starting in January.
Norwood is on an all-day in-school model because of
the ability to socially distance classrooms. However, due
to quarantines and isolations, more children are forced
to engage in remote learning, resulting in more demand
ment with wish lists that included not just toys, but also
practical items such as clothing.
“Our Shop with a Cop started close to eight or nine
years ago. One of the officers saw it as a community outreach
being done in other areas. So, we decided to start
it here,” said Glenn Nicol, London police chief. “We’ve
kept it going, and it grows stronger every year.”
In the past, the department has solicited donations
of merchandise and services from area businesses to
auction off to fund the Shop with a Cop program. This
year, they went a different direction.
“We did not feel it was appropriate to hit up the
small businesses this year,” Nicol said. “Instead, we received
(monetary) donations from various individuals
and businesses, and the officers themselves donated
over $1,000.”
The Madison County Sheriff’s Association delivered
gifts to 15 children in the Madison-Plains School District
on Dec. 19.
“We talked to the kids’ guardians and got to know
the kids that way because, of course, due to COVID, we
on teachers.
“When we began all-day, we selected one teacher for
remote learning,” reported Mullett, “but more and more
kids have to be isolated. Most of our teachers are now
doing both in-class and remote, and that’s a lot more
work for our elementary teachers.
“We’re making the change to early release one day a
week to help those teachers. Nothing changes at the
high school and middle school, though.”
Mullett said he will make a formal announcement
after the Christmas holiday about the early release
schedule at Norwood Elementary and what school will
look like when students return on Jan. 5.
couldn’t take the kids shopping with us,” said Dep.
Roberta Roberts. “We asked about their needs and their
wants. Their needs—like clothes, hats, and gloves—were
our first priority. It was touching that a lot of their
wants were things for their siblings.”
Roberts and 11 other members of the department
and their families went shopping at the London Walmart
on Dec. 10.
“I gave each deputy a picture of the child they were
buying for and their age, grade, favorite color, likes and
what they collect,” Roberts said.
Tom Coughlin of Coughlin Automotive covered the
cost of the gifts.
“He paid for everything. I wasn’t expecting that. I
had a little budget in mind, and he doubled it. He really
wanted these kids to have stuff,” Roberts said.
Shoe Sensation stepped up to the plate, too, with a
big discount. As a result, each child is receiving a pair
of tennis shoes and a pair of winter boots plus socks.
The Madison County Sheriff Deputies Association donated
money for gift wrap, gift bags and name tags.
“Having everything done local made it more personal,”
Roberts said.
The year 2020 was a year no one
expected. Within the Madison
County Chamber of Commerce and
Madison County Future Inc., we started the year full of
optimism, and we spoke confidently about the strong
residential, commercial, and industrial growth we anticipated
here in the county. We also were excited for
the opportunity to strengthen our members and community
through quality programming and events.
Truthfully, it seemed as though 2020 was going to be
one the strongest years we’ve had within the past
decade.
While we did experience growth in 2020, our community
also had to be strong and come together in response
to COVID-19. We saw businesses support each other
and the community make a strong push to support local
businesses.
The Chamber of Commerce was able to support local
businesses affected by COVID-19 in a variety of ways,
including holding educational sessions and providing information
about funds and resources. Soon after the announcement
of the Payroll Protection Program, the
Chamber worked with the Small Business Administration
to educate the local business community on how to
apply for and receive funds. In the fourth quarter, the
Chamber worked with the State of Ohio to distribute information
and educate small businesses about new
small-business relief programs.
The following are up-to-date funding numbers for
opinion
Chamber: Looking forward
letter
two programs in Madison County:
• Small Business Relief Grant
Funding ($10,000 per business)—17
businesses;
• Bar and Restaurant Assistance Fund ($2,500 per
business)—17 businesses.
Although we need to acknowledge what has happened
in 2020, it’s time to look forward. The Chamber
and Madison County Future Inc. are excited for the upcoming
year. While we still have to deal with the affects
of COVID-19, we speak confidently about Madison
County continuing to grow in 2021. We also are excited
about programming that will be offered in 2021. We can
already share we will offer two programs for members
in January:
• Jan. 19 at noon—Legislative Update provided by
Hicks Partners;
• Jan. 27 at 2 p.m.—Columbus State Manufacturing
Extension Partnership: Cybersecurity (open to all businesses).
Virtual meeting details will be provided at a later
date.
We appreciate the support from our members and
the community. We look forward to working with our
members and the community to grow Madison County.
MP looking at options
for instruction model
By Josephine Birdsell
Staff Writer
Madison-Plains Local Schools leaders are
discussing options for the district’s return to
classes in the second semester.
As of the Dec. 15 school board meeting,
the district had two active COVID-19 cases
and 10 people in isolation due to potential
exposure to the virus.
COVID-19 cases in the district have decreased
considerably since the switch to online
classes, said Superintendent Chad
Eisler. One month ago, at the school board’s
last regular meeting, the district had four
active cases and 80 students in isolation.
If cases continue to drop, the district
hopes to implement a hybrid model of education
in the second semester.
“We believe it’s important to get students
back into our schools in whatever way possible,”
Eisler said.
The district is not set up to move to a hybrid
model with half of the district’s students
in school at a time while also
complying with Madison County Public
Health’s requirement for six-foot social distancing
between all students and staff.
The district is working to switch out tables
in classrooms for desks or chairs to increase
space between students, Eisler said.
Additionally, the district sent a survey to
all families, allowing them the choose to enroll
their children in fully online classes in
the second semester. The district is awaiting
all responses before it determines what,
if any, resources must be reallocated for the
second semester.
Eisler suspects the district will need to
hire at least two teachers, one for the elementary
school and one for the intermediate
school.
“We recognize that having students in
the classroom, for the vast majority of students,
is the best way for them to learn,” he
added.
The district intends to communicate a
clearer plan for the second semester to district
families by the end of December.
Highway Patrol lauds
Perez joined the Highway Patrol in 2017
and served at the Springfield post prior to
his current assignment at West Jefferson.
Originally from Hilliard and a graduate of
London High School, Perez attended Notre
Dame College. He has received the Ace,
Criminal Patrol, Safe Driving, and Health
& Fitness awards.
Perez resides in Hilliard with his wife,
Loren, and daughter, Camila.
Williams joined the Highway Patrol in
2013 and has served at the West Jefferson
school in person Thursdays and Fridays. The plan applies to all
grades, pre-kindergarten through 12th.
To create space and allow for social distancing protocols, custodians
are moving student desks, tables, chairs, and other furniture
into semi-trailer storage containers at each building.
At the school board’s Dec. 14 meeting, Superintendent Gary
Chapman said district leaders also are exploring an alternate instruction
model for students in grades K-4. The idea is to have these
students attend school in-person five days a week, half of them in
the morning and half of them in the afternoon. This would provide
students with daily, direct contact with their teachers. The idea is
still under exploration.
“Our plan is to communicate any updates and/or changes regarding
the status of our (return-to-school plans) no later than Wednesday,
Dec. 23,” Chapman said.
He noted that superintendents at school districts throughout
Madison County will be meeting with Chris
Cook, the county’s health commissioner, for
an update on Dec. 21.
“We will continue to monitor the conditions
at the state, county, and local levels,”
Chapman said.
As of Dec. 14, the school district had 10
active COVID-19 cases and 31 individuals
in quarantine. Going into Thanksgiving
break, the district had 11 cases and 121 individuals
in quarantine.
Chapman said the district chooses which
instruction pathway to follow based, in part,
on the ability to maintain appropriate
staffing levels.
“The type of pathway engaged may be
dependent upon student, teacher, and staff
COVID-19 absenteeism and access to appropriately
licensed substitutes,” he said.
Public input
During the public participation portion
of the Dec. 14 meeting, several parents of
students in the district commented on the
district’s instructional pathways.
Tyler Harriman said his son, a sixthgrader,
has done well with the set schedule
in full-remote mode. He said his son likes
the structure, and assignments are easier
to track. On the other hand, he said his
daughter, a second-grader, struggles with
spending so much time on the computer.
“She’s a bright kid, but she’s hurt by not
being in the classroom,” Harriman said.
“Getting our younger ones back in the classroom
really needs to be a priority.”
Diana McCoy, the parent of a senior at
the high school, said that remote and hybrid
learning is taking a toll on students’ mental
health and negatively impacting their education.
She read aloud a letter her daughter
wrote to the school board about this issue.
In the letter, McCoy’s daughter writes
about missing face-to-face interactions with
her peers and her teachers. She feels distant
from her friends and school community.
“It’s hard to stay connected to your community
over a screen,” she writes.
She noted that she and many of her
peers are finding it hard to focus while
learning at home and are experiencing
burnout. Additionally, in the current learning
environment, students are being held to
a different standard, she said, one that is
not on par with previous years of instruction
or with the standards expected in the
world outside of school.
After reading her daughter’s letter,
McCoy thanked the staff at Jonathan Alder
for the hard work they are doing in tough
circumstances. She said she would love to
see the district return to a traditional inperson
instruction model or, if that is not an
option, look into alternatives within the hybrid
format, such as allowing students an
additional day of in-person learning if they
feel they need it.
Sonia Walker, a parent of two students
in the district and an attorney, urged school
leaders to consult with the district’s attorneys
regarding the enforceability of orders
and advisories issued by the local health department.

Fully in-person classes unlikely under mandate
By Josephine Birdsell
Staff Writer
London school board members discussed
plans for the second semester at their regularly
scheduled meeting on Dec. 15.
After the winter break, the district will
return to school in a hybrid model. Moving
to fully in-person classes is unlikely, said
Dr. Lou Kramer, superintendent.
A mandate from Madison County Public
Health requires six-feet of social distancing
between all students and staff. London’s
schools have enough space to allow classes
to resume in a hybrid model, with larger
classes relocated to larger rooms.
The district does not have the building
capacity to return to fully in-person classes
while the distancing mandate remains in
place.
“Provided the rule stays the same… we
will have great difficulty moving more children
into the schools and trying to move
fully in-person until the mandate is relaxed,”
Kramer said.
The district saw slight fluctuations in the
number of students opting to partake in
fully online classes in the second semester.
In the first semester, 23 percent of students
opted for a fully online option, while in the
second semester 21 percent are opting for
the fully online option. The district should
not have to reallocate major resources as a
Bowl-a-thon planned for 2021
Junior Achievement Mad River Region is
holding its JA Superheroes Bowl-a-thon
from Feb. 27 to March 30, 2021. Participants
can bowl with their team at the kickoff
on Feb. 27 or collect pledges and receive
a gift certificate to bowl two games. Participants
can choose between Victory Lanes
and Plain City Lanes.
With Option 1, participants form a fiveperson
team, raise $150 or more as a group,
and bowl during the Feb. 27 kickoff. Door
prizes, team costume and most-spirited contests,
prizes for pledges collection, and
snacks are planned.
With Option 2, participants form a fiveperson
team, collect $150 or more in pledges
as a group, and receive a gift card for two
games. Teams must reserve times with
their alley of choice between Feb. 28 and
March 31. Pledges must be turned in at either
alley on Feb. 27, at which time participants
can pick up goodie bags. Prizes for
pledge collection are planned.
result of the change, Kramer said.
Roughly 1 percent to 2 percent of elementary
school students have decided to switch
from taking online classes to taking hybrid
classes in the second semester. Roughly 1
percent to 2 percent of high school students
are switching from hybrid classes to online
classes. The ratio of middle school students
participating in online versus hybrid classes
remains the same.

‘e Prom’ a decent watch
Celebrities, whether they hail from the entertainment
industry, music industry, or sporting
world, are often criticized for speaking out for a
cause. Much of this criticism comes from socalled
fans who are unhappy that their fave has
an opposing view or alternative life experience. But some of it comes
from non-celebrities within the cause who wonder if support from the
famous is solely for positive press.
Netflix’s “The Prom” tries to examine the latter phenomenon in
a cheeky, less serious way, however the focus is on the star-studded
aspect of the story. This directorial decision, however unconsciously
made, gives off a faint whiff of self-importance in an otherwise
sweet story about self-discovery and genuine activism.
The film, adapted from a Tony-nominated Broadway musical,
begins in a small town in Indiana at a Parent-Teacher Association
meeting. The PTA chair, Mrs. Greene (Kerry Washington), has
called an emergency meeting at the school, complete with the local
Mrs. Greene considers
the idea to be an abomination and encourages
the association to cancel the festivities
to be “fair to all students.” When the festivities
are cancelled, outrage is felt throughout
the LGBTQ community, their allies, and
the student body. The latter’s displeasure
and anger, however, is directed at Emma
(newcomer Jo Ellen Pellman) who only
wants to have a nice evening with her girlfriend
and fellow seniors before graduation.
While this is happening in the Midwest,
outrage is brewing in New York City, but this
comes from a slew of Broadway actors mystified
that critics don’t love their latest play,
“Eleanor! The Eleanor Roosevelt Musical.”
Frustrated at being called unlikeable squirming
Allen (Meryl Streep) and Barry Glickman
(James Corden) set off to find something to
“make their brand more appealing.”
Despite consuming a few alcoholic beverages
with nothing to make themselves more marketable
or likeable. While drowning in their
sorrows, they learn from fellow struggling
actors, Angie Dickinson (Nicole Kidman)
and Trent Oliver (Andrew Rannells), about
the goings-on in Indiana. Being a gay man,
Barry emphathizes with Emma’s plight.
Being considered one of the great “gay positive
way. Knowing they can make a difference
using their celebrity, the pair, alongside
Angie and Trent, set off for small-town Indiana
to “change the minds of those bigoted
monsters” and snag some positive press.
Though the story largely centers around
Emma and the challenges she and her closeted
girlfriend, Alyssa Greene (Ariana De-
Bose), face, the film’s primary focus is the
well-known cast of characters played by actors
Streep, Kidman, Corden and, to a lesser
degree, Rannells. I have not seen the Broadway
play in full—I did catch their showcase
at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade
that, ironically, drew heavy criticism when
it featured a scene with the two female leads
kissing—I do not know if that is the case in
that medium, as well. But the film version
feels slightly less disingenuous with its focus
on them. Yes, they are the funniest parts of
the musical and, yes, to its credit, it does
show their characters trying to grow as fully
realized narcissistic adults, but the film
could have done a better job of balancing the
two topically important stories.
While “The Prom” is not a perfect film, it
is a bright, enjoyable look at two teenage
girls finding strength through their love for
each other, a mess of adults trying to improve
their behaviors to better themselves
and the world, and a possible future where
Broadway’s lights can shine again.
StoryWalk new at Pastime Park
December 20, 2020 - MADISON MESSENGER - Page 11
Plain City Public Library, in partnership
with the village of Plain City, announces
the installation of a StoryWalk at
Plain City’s Pastime Park.
The StoryWalk is an innovative way for
children and adults to enjoy reading and
the outdoors at the same time. Pages from
a children’s book are displayed in cases installed
along the walking path at Pastime
Park. As park visitors stroll down the trail,
they are directed to the next page in the
story.
The StoryWalk installation was made
possible through grant funds secured by
the Plain City Parks and Recreation Department
and a donation from the Friends
of the Plain City Public Library.
The StoryWalk project was created by
Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, Vermont,
and developed in collaboration with the
Kellogg-Hubbard Library. StoryWalk is a
registered service mark owned by Ferguson.
Pastime Park is located at 270 N. Chillicothe
St., Plain City. The walking trail is
located next to the playground at the main
entrance to the park.
Amanda Warner, public services librarian
at Plain City Public Library, stands alongside
one of the panels of the new Story-
Walk installation at Pastime Park.
inking big at Alder
By Kristy Zurbrick
Madison Editor
Through a partnership with Amazon
Web Services (AWS), Jonathan Alder Local
Schools will be encouraging students and
the community to “think big” starting next
school year.
AWS is donating $100,000 to the school
district to convert a classroom at the high
school into a Think Big Space. The idea is to
provide students in grades K-12 with a place
to stretch their imaginations, creativity, and
problem-solving skills and explore career
opportunities.
AWS will outfit the room with resources,
as well as brand and furnish it, according to
Dr. Misty Swonger, Jonathan Alder assistant
superintendent. The school district will
provide one teacher who will receive training
from AWS. The company will send mentors
to the space regularly to show students
how to use the type of tools and technology
Amazon employees use in their jobs.
“Workforce development is a big thing for
(AWS),” Swonger said, noting that the company
is funding Think Big Spaces in areas
where they are creating jobs.
AWS launched its first Think Big Space
last fall at an elementary school in Virginia.
The classroom at Jonathan Alder will be the
company’s first Community Think Big
Space. In addition to instruction for students,
AWS and the school district will host
Maker Days, opening the space to parents
and the community at large.
Swonger said the school district first
learned of the Think Big Space opportunity
on the morning of Dec. 14. By the end of the
day, a proposal was put together and a timeline
put in place.
Right now, the idea is to have elementary
school students make field trips to the
space, then take resource kits back to their
classrooms to continue learning. The focus
will be technology, coding, robotics, and the
like.
For older students, the focus likely will
be a mashup of math and career development,
with resources and guidance geared
toward things like quantitative reasoning,
data analysis, statistics, and probability.
This framework would align with the Ohio
Department of Education’s proposed plan to
issue new math pathways next school year
that nurture workforce and career development.
“Amazon will have the donation to us by
December with the goal of having a grand
opening next August,” Swonger said of the
timeline.
She noted that the project will be ongoing
and always evolving. The $100,000 coming
in December is just the first round of funding.
Attorney General warns of vaccine-related scams
State Rte. 142 southbound
bridge closed until spring
The State Route 142 southbound bridge over I-70 closed on Dec.
11 for bridge deck replacement. Southbound traffic has been shifted
to the northbound bridge over I-70, and one lane of traffic is being
maintained in both directions. This traffic pattern will be in effect
until spring 2021.
Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost is cautioning Ohioans to look
out for COVID-19 vaccine-related scams that will occur as the vaccine
is distributed.
“A single dose of information can vaccinate you against fraud,”
Yost said.
For example, consumers could see scammers impersonating distributors,
providers, or local health departments claiming to need
personal information, such as a Social Security number to get on a
list to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.
Other scammers could pretend to be able to help consumers jump
to the front of the line to get a vaccine, but ask for advanced payment
to secure their place in line. These communications could
come through email, phone call, postal mail, text message, or even
social media accounts. Do not fall for these scams.
Also, reports indicate that cards may be distributed to consumers
that have been provided the first dose of a two-dose vaccine. These
will likely be used to simply remind consumers to get their second
dose, not as official “passports” to gain entry into bars, restaurants
or other public areas, or to bypass public health orders. Therefore,
any attempts to buy these cards will be fruitless.
Early in 2020, published reports warned consumers to have their
guard up when going online to receive information for products and
services designed to help protect against COVID-19. In reality, computer
hackers were reportedly sending spam emails with links that
were designed to infect consumers’ computers with malicious software,
some of which may steal personal information or passwords
stored on their devices.
Within the first week of the COVID-19 lockdown in March, scammers
started emailing, calling, and texting Ohioans, trying to steal
their identity or money, according to data from Yost’s Constituent
Services Section.
Some of those scams asked people to pay for advice on how to
treat COVID-19, pay for access to care, and to give personal information
in order to get medication or prevent
infection.
To date, Yost’s office has received 39 complaints
of potential COVID-19-related
scams.
The Ohio Attorney General’s Office recommends
several tips to help consumers
avoid potential virus- and vaccine-related
scams:
• Verify any vaccine-related information
with legitimate news reports. Double-check
any new “too-good-to-be-true” news or
claims. You may wish to consider contacting
your family doctor, your local health department,
or the statewide Ohio Department of
Health’s COVID-19 call center (1-833-427-
5634) to check on issues you are unsure
about.
• Look for some of the red flags of a scam,
such as being asked to wire money or send
a prepaid money card or gift card to a
stranger; being pressured to act immediately,
or being told to buy a product or service
where the company refuses to provide
any information in writing. Also look out if
you’re asked to keep conversations a secret.
• You likely will not need to pay anything
out of pocket to get the vaccine during
this public health emergency. You can’t pay
to put your name on a list to get the vaccine.
You can’t pay to get early access to the vaccine.
• No one from a vaccine distribution site
or health care payer, like a private insurance
company, will call you asking for your
Social Security number or your credit card
or bank account information to sign you up
to get the vaccine.
Consumers who suspect an unfair business practice or want help
addressing a consumer problem should contact the Ohio Attorney
General’s Office at www.OhioProtects.org or 800-282-0515.
tian philosophy expressed in Linus’s speech
about the first Christmas contrasts with the
secular commercialism that has become
part of the holiday observance.
I am joyfully thrust back decades in time
whenever I see this show.
Three years before “Charlie Brown”
aired, Mr. Magoo celebrated the holidays in
1962 with his vision-challenged version of
“A Christmas Carol.” While Mr. Magoo does
not draw the same devotion as Charlie, it is
worth the hunt to watch his version of
Ebenezer Scrooge.
Speaking of Scrooge–and I will argue
this until Rudolph’s red nose no longer
blazes a path through the night–there is
only one glorious cinematic version of
Charles Dickens’s masterpiece—the 1951
black-and-white film starring Alistair Sim.
It is as if Dickens wrote the timeless tale
with Sim in mind, framed against the gray
bleakness of London in the 1840s. Sim is the
consummate Scrooge, smug in his pursuit of
penny pinching and financial gain.
Sim blurs the line between actor and role
as he becomes the quintessential curmudgeon,
using his height to lurk over the less
fortunate with a craggy face that runs the
gamut from hardened miser to compassionate
uncle.
Scrooge’s redemption at the hands of a
trio of spirits showcases Sim’s dynamic acting
chops in a role made for the actor and a
holiday gift I unwrap year after year. If you
only have time to watch one holiday classic,
make it this version of “A Christmas Carol.”
Likewise, Irving Berlin’s homage to the
holidays, “White Christmas,” is another gift
I give myself.
The ending alone—where all the stage
trappings are pulled away to showcase the
snow falling outside as the four lead actors
waltz around in the most amazing holiday
costumes ever—is another cinematic Christmas
card.
“White Christmas”
whirls around the
screen in glorious color,
song and dance under
the stewardship of Bing
Crosby, Danny Kaye,
Rosemary Clooney and
Vera Ellen.
Yes, it is a classic
boy-meets-girl/boyloses-girl/everyone-is-happy-in-the-end
story, but it is so much more. It is also a tale
of doing something nice for someone who
gave so much. Will it or won’t it snow? And
its songs have stood the test of time.
What more could you ask for?
Unless it happens to be Rankin and
Bass’s stop-motion 1964 animation classic,
“Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” a boymeets-girl/boy-loses-girl/boy-finds-friendsand-a-snow-monster-and-gets-girl
story. Or,
if you rather, a Santa-makes-a-big-mistake
story. Rudolph saves Santa’s reputation, the
Island of Misfit Toys, and Christmas.
My list of holiday cinematic happiness is
not complete without mentioning my modern
favorites:“A Christmas Story,” “Emmet
Otter’s Jug Band Christmas,” “Christmas
Vacation,” “Elf,” “Jingle All the Way” and
“The Polar Express” (the ending makes me
cry every single time).
So, drag along a millennial or two, grab
a cup of hot cocoa (topped with marshmallows,
of course) and join me in the pursuit
of the classics—holiday style.
be limited to five minutes in duration. Any person who wishes to attend
the public hearing and not offer testimony can do so by calling +1-408-
418-9388 and entering access code 173 371 4980. The public hearing will
also be live streamed for viewing at www.youtube.com/user/PUCOhio.
Additional information regarding the hearing is available at
https://opsb.ohio.gov/wps/ portal/gov/opsb/cases/19-1823-el-bgn or by
contacting the Commission’s Consumer Call Center at 1-800-686-7826.
2. An adjudicatory hearing commencing on Tuesday, January 19, 2021,
beginning at 10:00 a.m. EST. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the hearing
will be held virtually via Webex. To participate in the adjudicatory hearing,
intervention in the case is necessary.
Additional information regarding the Project, including the full case record
and a recent filing of a modification to the project footprint, is available at
https://dis.puc.state.oh.us/CaseRecord.aspx?Caseno=19-1823&link=DIVA.
The modification to the project footprint consists of moving the previous
substation location approximately 0.4 mile northwest to minimize impacts
to wetlands (new location shown in the map). Questions can be directed to
Big Plain at 877-228-3331 (and choosing option 2) or the Board at
866-270-6772. To learn more about the Project, you may also visit Big Plain’s
xMerry Christmas
The soft sounds of sleigh bells ring through the air,
while all over town children tiptoe with care.
They’re hoping to find, putting gifts ‘round the tree,
the jolly St. Nick they’ve been waiting to see.
But they never do glimpse him, as far as we know,
for he’s out in a flash with a quick,“Ho, ho, ho.”
Still it’s clear he’s been there, though he never gets caught,
from the clean plate of cookies and gifts that he brought.
Wishing you a magical Christmas and a very Happy New Year.
but rather supply the
readers with manuals, directories
and other materials
designed to help
their clients establish mail
order selling and other
businesses at home. Under
NO circumstance
should you send any
money in advance or give
the client your checking,
license ID or credit card
numbers. Also beware of
ads that claim to guarantee
loans regardless of
credit and note that if a
credit repair company
does business only over
the phone it’s illegal to request
any money before
delivering its service. All
