Associate principal Paul Donnelly says planning is on track for the expo to be held in the school’s Rakahuri building and hall on May 19. ‘‘It’s really important that we do that again and Ithink it’s important that we show students what opportunities are out there. ‘‘The life of work for our students will be hugely varied, as life is, and we have to prepare them for that. ‘‘Education today is not only about instilling knowledge, but about their capacity to cope with change and how do we make decisions?’’ The expo is part of a joint initiative between Rangiora and Kaiapoi High Schools, the Education and Social Development ministries, the Waimakariri District Council, Enterprise North Canterbury and Community College North Canterbury. It was first held in 2019, but cancelled last year because of Covid19. This year’s event will be open to all North Canterbury youth, secondary school students and their caregivers. Tertiary training providers and industry training organisations will be present along with the various industries and employers in North Canterbury. Boston Canton and Ella Sparkwere selected as this year’s head boy and head girl. Lachlan Rennie and Callum Rutlege havebeen named as deputy headboys, and Ruby GillClifford and Freya Kersey as deputy headgirls. Atotal of 199 students graduated late last year at the Year 13 graduation at the Christchurch TownHall. Amongthem were 22 students awarded 28 scholarshipsfor tertiary study at Auckland, Victoria, Canterbury, Lincoln and Otago universities.The scholarships rangebetween $2000and $35,000,with some offering universityaccommodation.
