Teaching the ‘‘base subjects’’
of numeracy and literacy
remain at the forefront as
Kaiapoi High School
prepares for another record
intake of Year 9s.
Principal Bruce Kearney
says more than 260 Year 9
pupils have enrolled for 2021,
nearly 50 more than last year.
‘‘We’ve been reflecting alot
about who we are and what
we offer.
‘‘There has been agreat
deal of push from outside
agencies to change the nature
of school; for example,
wellbeing is at the forefront
of many of those
agencies,’’ he says.
‘‘It’s acomplicated world,
but we’re trying to give them
the core skills and you can’t
get away from the fact we are
ateaching and learning
institution.
‘‘So we are going back to
what we do best but with a
modern approach.’’
Mr Kearney believes the
key to wellbeing is an
inclusive environment where
pupils are engaged in their
learning.
While the world around
them is changing, basic skills
such as spelling, grammar,
literacy and numeracy
remain essential to
developing ‘‘lifelong
learners’’, he says.
‘‘Before they can start
directing their selflearning
and studentdirected
learning, we need to get on
top of those base subjects.
‘‘We are finding literacy is
becoming more and more of a
barrier to continuing their
education, so our school has a
major emphasis of doing it
through our community of
learning across our
contributing schools and
understanding our transition
steps.’’
In recent years universities
have expressed concerns at
numeracy and literacy
standards being lower than
expected, and tougher NCEA
testing has been proposed.
Mr Kearney arrived at
Kaiapoi High School in 2012
and has seen the school roll
grow from 550 pupils to more
than 900. There were just
four Year 9classes back then.
There has been growth
right through the school, with
around 75 percent of pupils
now staying on until the end
of Year 13.
Around half of Year 13
pupils went on to university,
25% to polytechs and the rest
went into ‘‘vocational
pathways’’, including local
employment, he says.
‘‘We are proud of that
because we offer pathways
that they can connect with.
We don’t assume everyone
wants to go to university.’’
As well as providing more
Year 9classes, the roll
growth has allowed the
school to recruit aspecialist
commerce teacher for the
first time, with Natalie Cox, a
Canterbury women’s
cricketer, joining the staff.
