Outhouse provides
picturesque perch

Atoilet with one of the country’s most
picturesque outlooks is open for
business.
The toilet, nestled at the head of
Lake Sumner in North Canterbury’s
high country, has been built to meet
the needs of anglers, hunters,
trampers and boaties.
It is located in beautiful Home Bay,
apopular spot to fish the Hurunui
River delta or troll by boat.
It is also on the increasingly popular
Te Araroa Trail, which has thousands
of visitors each year.
The genesis of the project arose
from landowners’ concerns around
human waste in the popular spot.
The toilet was installed by the
Department of Conservation and the
landowner, and was ready in time for
the busy summer holiday season.
Fish &Game put $3000 toward the
project, using funds from its nonresident
licence revenue.
Non­resident overseas anglers are
charged an additional fee on their
fishing licence to help fund projects
such as the loo.
Fish &Game officer Tony Hawker
says it is great that the money can go
into asmall but effective piece of
infrastructure to manage the effects of
visitors at such apicturesque spot.

Visible from land and water, and a
short walk from the lake edge, the
toilet is apractical solution for
recreation users in one of the most
popular fishing lakes in the region.

Sutton, was remembered
as aquietly spoken
gentleman, who showed
his love throughactions
more than words, at a
service for him in
Rangiora on Tuesday.
Ahugecrowd attended
to celebrateMrSutton’s
life, after he died
suddenly on January 3
while on holiday in
Ashburton.
The servicewas
conducted by celebrant
Mary Mason and held at
Lamb and Hayward’s
Rangiora chapel. It was
live streamedtoinclude
eulogies fromMrSutton’s
son Dean, in London,and
his sister Heather,in
Alan Sutton
California. Mr Sutton’s
brothers, Geoff and David
also gave eulogies at the
service alongwith others.
Rangiora Borough
School staff, pupilsand
theirfamilies performed
awaiata in the chapelat
the end of the service.
Outside the school’s
kapahaka group
performed ahaka and a
large groupofprincipals,
teachers and Ministry of
Educationofficials
formed aguard of honour
for Mr Sutton as the
hearse leftthe chapel.
Mr Suttonhad been
principal andpreviously
deputy principalof
Rangiora Borough School
for more than 20 years.
The doorsofthe school
hallwere openedlast
weekfor thosewishing to
leave flowers or
messages.
He is survived by his
wife, Jill,and his son,
Dean.
