Summer rain likely to alter sale dynamics<br />

Summer rain has changedthings<br />

dramatically aheadofthis month’s<br />

HawardenEwe Fair.<br />

Stockagents expect ewe numberstobe<br />

well down at the Hawarden Saleyards on<br />

Friday, <strong>January</strong> 29, after lastyear’s sale<br />

was splitover two daysbecauseofits size.<br />

But the turnaround from the pre­<br />

Christmas dry spell to lush,green pastures<br />

meansthere could be somekeen interest<br />

in bidding for ewes,despitethe global<br />

uncertainty.<br />

‘‘It’s changeddramatically. <strong>Canterbury</strong><br />

has endeduphavingapretty good<br />

season,’’ Peter Walsh&Associates<br />

auctioneerAllister Orchard says.<br />

‘‘From whatIunderstandfrom the other<br />

agents, the overall numbersare going to be<br />

back on lastyear as we haven’t got those<br />

largelinesofcapital stock we had last<br />

year.<br />

‘‘So it will put abit more demandif<br />

there’sless numbers, but there’s alsoabit<br />

of caution aboutatthe momentgiven the<br />

wholeworld scene with Covid.’’<br />

RuralLivestock <strong>Canterbury</strong> livestock<br />

manager DonaldCooke says<strong>Canterbury</strong>’s<br />

ewe fairs,beginning with Hawarden, are<br />

goingtobe‘‘a bit of unknown’’.<br />

‘‘Anyone who was dry pre­Christmas<br />

wouldhave reviewed theirstock numbers.<br />

Therewouldhave been alot of marginal<br />

ewes that werekilled,sothere willbethe<br />

price of $4.50 to $5 akilogram.<br />

held over two days,attracting more than<br />

18,000 mixed­age ewes and 30 rams on the<br />

opening day, with the top pens of ewes<br />

attractingmore than $250.<br />

More than8500 two­toothewes were<br />

entered the following week, but struggled<br />

to sell amidhot, dry and dusty conditions,<br />

with one­third of the sheepreturning<br />

home unsold.<br />

The top priceacross the two days was<br />

$280 paidfor apen of two­tooth ewes sold<br />

by Benmore Station of Marlborough.<br />

Just 12,000 eweswent underthe<br />

hammer at the 2019Hawarden Ewe Fair.<br />

The sale will start at 11am, with the<br />

ewes being penned and available for<br />

inspection from 9am on theday of the sale.<br />

Once again,the local Hawarden<br />

combined churches willbecatering for<br />

the event, continuing along­standing<br />

tradition.<br />

The Hawarden Ewe Fairhas been going<br />

for morethan 100 years. It is the only ewe<br />

fair still running in <strong>North</strong> <strong>Canterbury</strong>,<br />

while across the Waimakariri Riverthe<br />

Sheffield Ewe Fair will be held next<br />

month.<br />
