Szczepaniak Astridge’s winning entry is currently inthe early design process and it is expected to start construction in2021.DESIGN COMPOSITIONImagining a project that portrays “Supermax’s brand valuesand cements their position as a World Leader in supplying PPEequipment”, the London-based architecture firm created a9-storey building that will accommodate Research & Development(R&D), sales and marketing offices, finance and bankingdepartment, car parking, training centre, auditorium, lecture hall, restaurants, grand ballroom for 1000 people, event spaces. In fact, the winning entry presented a “particular vision for greenery-filledoffices behind a facade that will pay homage to the natural originsof the latex gloves”, according to the official release.Inspired by Chinese culture, the number ‘9’ that is consideredlucky, and the Feng Shui principles, the new building will allowfor future flexibility in-between floors for expansion, generatinga natural environment inside of the building. Located in Klang, the royal town of Selangor state on the west coast of peninsularMalaysia, the 385,000 sq ft Supermax Global Headquarters iscentred around the post-COVID interpretation of what an officewill be. Moreover, on the same site, two factories are beingbuilt to keep up with this increased demand, along with the newheadquarters in the town. The building's gridded façade will feature slim verticalelements that echo the slim trunks of the rubber trees that aretapped for latex, creating an intricate pattern of markings echoedCREDIT LISTCLIENT:SUPERMAX CORPORATION BERHADARCHITECT:SZCZEPANIAK ASTRIDGEin the office's design. Further, the façade design will mitigate fromdirect solar gain and glare whilst allowing air movement throughto provide a thermally comfortable external amenity space inthis humid climate. Voids and atriums are also created within theplan to help carve light into the spaces. The architecture firm thenwrapped green belts around the perimeter and within the internalcourtyards that act as shaded amenity breaks out spaces for theoccupants. These zones filled with tropical plants will sit between theinterior offices and the brise-soleil, and office workers will be ableto walk out among the planted terraces during breaks. Ceiling fanswill circulate the air inside.Every office has a view of the green belts and this will be usedto improve employees’ mental wellness, while making them feellike they were in a forest or the rubber plantation itself whileworking.(Source: archdaily.com)Jan-Feb 2021 | www.b-i.biz 23
