Concepts & Designs(Source: Schran Image)CHANGZHOUCULTURE PLAZAChangzhou, ChinaIn the Chinese province of Jiangsu, within the catchmentarea of Shanghai, lies the city of Changzhou which, with itsabout 5 million inhabitants, has developed into an importantindustrial metropolis in the Yangtze Delta region. In thenewly created city centre of Changzhou, gmp Architektenhas created a cultural centre with an art museum, library,hotel, offices, and retail areas. The German firm won aninternational competition with a design that generates a spatiallydiverse urban landscape with buildings and a public park. With thisconcept, the Changzhou Culture Plaza has become a symbolic andunmistakable new public centre of Changzhou.The Changzhou Culture Plaza is surrounded by a public park,which together with the Town Hall and the Changzhou GrandTheatre located to the north, forms the new city centre ofChangzhou. The development comprises six identical, freestandingbuilding modules that are angled towards each other andarranged in a 2 × 3 cluster. (Source: Schran Image)(Source: Schran Image)area of 70m × 70m and, as an autonomous unit with individualentrance and lobby, accommodates one of the functions of theCulture Plaza such as the art museum, library, hotel, and offices.Visually, the 50m-high buildings appear as cubes that arehollowed-out on two sides. In this way, together they create aroofed-over public space that interlinks with the park, forminga spatially diverse city landscape. The watercourse that runsdiagonally across the 17-hectare site flows in a canyon-likesculpted cutting, which links the commercial functions with eachother at basement level. Further, it emphasizes the bridge motifof the buildings and links the Plaza with the underground stationto the south-east. The view from the north articulates the gestureof a large gate that, across Longcheng Avenue, faces ChangzhouPeople’s Square with the Town Hall and Grand Theatre.Following the basic idea of the concept, the façades havebeen designed according to the principle of unity with diversity. Anatural stone façade dominates the orthogonal building envelope;the curved cut-out areas are given prominence by an elegantglazed façade, making the cut edges visible, and sculpturallyemphasizing the abstract shape of the buildings. In this way,different characters are acquired by the building envelopes,which are spanned by a uniform horizontal façade structurewith wide aluminium louvers that follow the curvature beneaththe cantilever. At the same time, the horizontal natural stone ormetal louvers serve as external solar screening that significantlyincreases the energy efficiency of the buildings.During the day, the solid stone bands form a strong,rhythmical contrast to the dark glazed areas. At night, when thebuildings are internally illuminated, the arched glazed areas areinvitingly lit and, beneath the almost 40 m-high arches, createimpressive interaction between the inside and outside withcontinually varying angles of view.The loadbearing structure consists of reinforced concretecores and a steel construction that diagonally cantilevers byalmost 40m on two sides of the core area. The vertical loadis transferred downwards via compression arches, and thehorizontal forces are transferred to the reinforced concrete coresvia the cantilever floors.
