Byextending the east-west axis of Vermijo Avenueto the America the Beautiful Park, the newpedestrian bridge will reconnect the urban fabricof downtown Colorado Spring. The bridge also stitches togethera growing network of pedestrian bicycle paths including the PikesPeak Greenway and Midland Trail running alongside MonumentCreek.Designed by the same team as the adjacent U.S. Olympic &Paralympic Museum complex – Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R),Anderson Mason Dale, ARUP, and KL&A – the new pedestrianbridge takes its inspiration from the gravity-defying motion ofathletes, with a 250-foot curved steel structure that floats abovethe railyard. Two interlocked loops, stretching from either sideof the railyard, connect the museum and the park. Visitors willpass through an oculus that frames views of the museum and thepark’s Penrose Fountain.DS+R Partner-in-Charge and Lead Designer Benjamin Gilmartinnoted, “The bridge is an exercise in ÿtness - both in terms ofmaterial and geometry. The hybrid steel structure systemfunctions as an arch and a truss, elegantly preserving views fromDowntown to the majestic mountain ranges of the ColoradoRockies.”The bridge’s generous width safely accommodates people ofall ages and abilities, on both bikes and on foot to enjoy a viewto as well as access by stair and a glass elevator At its widestpoint, an oculus at either side of the bridge frames the museumand downtown to the east, or a platform for train spotting belowand a distinct look out to Pikes Peak-America’s Mountain to thewest. In the evenings, lighting along the bridge will trace a singlevector from one side of the tracks to the other, giving a sense ofspeed and motion while providing illumination for pedestrians andcyclists.The prefabricated bridge was assembled by King Fabricationin Houston, Texas and a full fit up was conducted in May 2020to ensure a continuous geometry. In June 2020, the bridge wasdelivered to Colorado Springs in sections and assembled andwelded together on the ground adjacent to the rail yard and fitJan-Feb 2021 | www.b-i.biz 29
