Though Hildebrandt’s started making its signature sandwiches in the

When Nicholas returned to Germany in
the early 1900s, he sold the business to his
nephew, also named Nicholas.
One day in 1908, a young lady named Edna
Mohrmann walked into Hildebrandt’s, having
graduated with honors the day before from
Tubman High School, and asked for a job.
A year later, she and young Nicholas were
married.
For the next several decades, the couple
conducted business on the first floor. In their
home on the second floor, they reared eight
children. Louis, the oldest son and Luanne’s
father, was born in 1914.
Four years later, the flu pandemic stormed
into Augusta.
In September 1918, a train from Camp
Grant in Illinois delivered more than 3,000
Army troops to Fort Gordon’s predecessor,
Camp Hancock, according to the book “The
Great Influenza” by John M. Barry. Hundreds
of soldiers had to be hospitalized immediately
after arriving.
By October, historian Edward J. Cashin
wrote in “The Story of Augusta,” the camp
had hospitalized 3,000 men, and 52 died in
just one week.
