Mothers. Sons. Sisters. We’re all about family this month 

There’s been much noise about Girl 

A … and deservedly so. Abigail Dean’s 

debut novel, which is being called 

‘the book that will define a decade’, is 

magnificent. A psychological drama, it 

starts off fairly gently but gets deeper 

and darker and more distressing with 

every chapter. The story, told by Lex – 

Girl A, jumps from past to present … 

the past being her and her siblings’ 

horrendous childhood, growing up 

in her religious fanatic parents’ House 

of Horrors; the present being when 

her mother dies in prison and leaves 

Lex, now a lawyer, executor of her 

estate … a little money and the family 

home from which Lex escaped. Lex, 

with agreement and encouragement 

from her sister Evie, decides to turn 

the house into a force for good … 

including everything her parents 

would have hated. We meet each of 

her siblings – as children and as the 

adults they’ve grown up to be. Girl 

A, soon to be a TV show directed by 

Johan Renck (director of Chernobyl), is 

a story of redemption, horror and love, 

and is gripping, powerful and deeply 

disturbing. Brilliant! 


If you’ve nothing planned for the weekend, this one’s a light, quick read which 

will keep you guessing. Michelle Frances (The Girlfriend, The Daughter) takes sibling 

rivalry and family secrets to a whole new level in Sisters. It starts off slow, and a 

little predictable, but the story soon hots up … with sisters Abby and Ellie doing a

Meghan’s 

African 

A wish to make the world a better 

dream 

place is often vaguely uttered by most 

pageant queens. For Meghan Pearl it 

has been a lifelong calling. The beauty 

with brains is an educator of learners 

with special needs and the current Miss 

Planet South Africa International. 

Born in Bloemfontein and brought up by her loving 

grandmother, Meghan always knew that she wanted to 

touch the lives of others. So when the time arrived for her 

to choose a career path, becoming a teacher was a nobrainer. 

“I think it was in Grade 9 that I met my inspiration 

in the form of my maths teacher. She was so warm and 

encouraging that when you talked to her about your 

dreams, she made you feel that you could absolutely 

achieve them. It was then that I knew that I wanted to 

make others feel the same way. So I decided to get into the 

teaching profession.” 

It’s because of this unwavering belief in her dreams that 

she decided to pursue modelling and pageantry, despite 

the odds. In this way she has become a stellar example 

for many local women and girls who may not fit the strict 

mould of what a runway model or beauty queen should be 

by continuing to break barriers in the industry. 

“Women from my grandmother’s era didn’t have chances 

to realise their dreams, so I think it’s important for us to 

create opportunities for ourselves and in that way open 

opportunities for each other. Sometimes it’s difficult for me 

to book ramp modelling jobs because of my height but 

when I do get them, it shows that what’s most important is 

to have a great attitude and confidence. I represent all the 

petite girls who want to make their mark.” 

A testament to Meghan’s influence in her community is 

the warm send-off they gave her when she represented 

South Africa in the Face of Beauty pageant in 2019. Looking 

regal and poised in her Khoi/San-inspired outfit, designed 

by local fabric maestro, Gerhardt Shebe, she wowed both 

judges and fellow contestants alike in the Philippines. “It 

was my national costume. We wanted to make something 

that represented the Khoi/San as some of the first people to 

have walked on the African soil.” 

As Miss Planet South Africa Meghan lives by the slogan 

“Beauty for Humanity”. “This phrase really speaks to me 

because it’s everything that I believe in. I’m so proud to 

be part of this pageant and I can’t wait to represent South 

Africa once again in Cambodia.” As part of her reign, she 

has initiated projects related to nutrition and education 

such as school gardens to help households in Heidedal and 

beyond. 

As an ambassador of the pageant, Meghan represents 

not just her community but women as well. “When you’re 

overseas you don’t just represent yourself but your whole 

country which I’m immensely proud of. In the pageant 

industry the South African sash is known as the “power sash” 

because our women are always well-spoken and intelligent. 

We bring something that the others don’t have. I look 

forward to continue doing that.” 

When she’s not walking the runway or in front of a 

chalkboard, Meghan enjoys travelling and tasting different 

cuisine around the country. “We have a beautiful country 

with locations that many of us may not be aware of, so it’s 

important to explore and protect them. For me, beauty is 

in the actions we take and how we make others feel. When 

you’re a selfless person who does what is right, it easily 

radiates from you without saying a word.”

Met 11 jaar ondervinding in die skoonheidsbedryf en 

haar eie besigheid, Karlé Potgieter Artistry, streef hierdie 

skoonheidsghoeroe daarna om eendag die beste in die 

bedryf te wees. Karlé is ‘n internasionaal gekwalifiseerde 

grimeerkunstenaar, skoonheidskundige, skoonheidsblogger 

en -skrywer sowel as ‘n baie dinamiese sakevrou, bekend as 

grimeerkunstenaar vir talle internasionale modelle en TVpersoonlikhede. 

Sy is al gebruik vir verskillende televisieprogramme soos Top Billing en andere op 

KykNet, en het verskeie kere die grimering van baie modelle en persoonlikhede 

vir tydskrifvoorblaaie gedoen, asook skoonheidsartikels vir plaaslike en nasionale 

tydskrifte geskryf. Groot name soos onder meer Karen Zoid, Caroline Grace, Ayanda 

Thabethe, Randy Fenoli en Diaan Daniels tel onder die groot name waarmee sy al 

gewerk het. 

Vir Karlé is dit ‘n voorreg om haar kennis met die wêreld daar buite te deel en om 

meer in diepte oor haar bedryf te skryf. Sy verduidelik, “Ek streef ook daarna om die 

beste in my beroep te wees en om my beste werk te lewer vir elke kliënt. Ek wil graag 

voortgaan om unieke kunswerke, waaraan baie mense nie gewoond is nie, te skep vir 

my portefeulje.” 

Die sprankelende Karlé maak oral in die land naam haar unieke grimeerkonsepte. Sy 

probeer altyd iets nuuts en haar Facebook- en Instagram-blad loop behoorlik oor van 

kreatiewe foto’s en saamgestelde idees en foto’s van ander plaaslike kunstenaars. 

Haar besigheid bied grimeringdienste vir geleenthede soos 

matriekafskeidgesellighede, verlowings, troues, swangermoeder-foto’s en allerlei 

spesiale geleenthede. Vir diegene wat deur die grimeergogga gebyt is, is daar 

selfs ook ‘n geleentheid om ‘n persoonlike grimeerles by dié professionele 

grimeerkunstenaar te bespreek. Sy bied onder meer ook groepsessies aan vir 

belangstellendes in die grimeerbedryf. 

Volgens Karlé, wat baie tuis voel met ‘n grimeerkwas in haar hand, is dit moontlik om 

haar passie en kunstalent elke dag uit te leef. “Die beste ding van grimering doen, is 

om elke dag saam ander mense te spandeer en nuwe mense te leer ken. Mens leer 

ook elke dag iets nuuts. Nuwe gesigte, nuwe uitdagings.” 

Op die vraag hoe sy te werk gaan wanneer sy iemand grimeer, vertel Karlé dat 

die aanwend van grimering ‘n proses is. Die eerste stap is om ‘n gesig te analiseer, 

soos byvoorbeeld die gesigvorm en oogvorm van jou kliënt. Dit is ook belangrik 

om die ouderdom van die persoon wat grimeer word in gedagte te hou. Dan volg 

‘n goeie vogroom, wat volgens die kliënt se veltipe uitgesoek word aangesien dit 

baie belangrik is vir ‘n egalige grimeerapplikasie. Volgende moet die presiese kleur 

onderlaag gemeng word volgens die kliënt se gelaatskleur, dit verhoed dat haar 

onderlaag soos ‘n masker lyk. Daarop volg ‘n poeierbedekking om die onderlaag in 

plek te hou. Die oë is volgende met oogskadu, oogpotlood en wimpers, indien die 

kliënt dit verkies. Om die gesig vorm te gee, word daar nou gekontoer en blosser 

word aangewend. Laastens kom die lippe aan die beurt wanneer ‘n lippotlood 

aangewend word om klein veranderingkies aan die lippe te maak en die finale stap is 

dan lipstiffie, iets waarsonder geen vrou kan gaan nie. 

Vir jare reeds ‘n inwoner van die Stad van Rose, hoewel sy in Port Elizabeth 

gebore is, het Karlé se earlike en opregte persoonlikheid haar gewild gemaak in 

die grimeeromgewing. Sy is nie skaam om elke dag iets nuuts te leer nie en is 

mal daaroor om saam met ander kreatiewes geleenthede te reël en aan te bied. 

Aangesien sy uit die aard van haar werk baie besig is op sosiale vlak, hou sy van haar 

alleentyd saam met haar man, Wynand, en hul vyf dierekinders as die kans hom 

voordoen. “Ek geniet lekker koffie en hou daarvan om tyd in koffiewinkels deur te 

bring en nuwe geure uit te probeer.” 

Een van die dinge van die lewe wat sy graag geniet, is die natuur en dierelewe, 

daarom gaan sy graag op wildsritte of ry sy perd in haar vrye tyd. Met alles wat 

aangaan in haar lewe, maak Karlé steeds tyd vir haar ander passie, juwele. Sy het 

onlangs ‘n aanlyn-juweleonderneming wat op bruide fokus, begin. Sy vertel aan Get

Vibrant and bubbly Velindi Bakkes is one of a number of full 

status agents at Aguila Real Estate. She was bitten by the real 

estate bug when she was looking for a home of her own after a 

move from Kimberley to Bloemfontein. 

“I’m a vibrant young woman who loves to maintain a work-life 

balance. I consider myself a social butterfly, so there’s no need to

too little people for the day,” she laughs. 

Previously an educator in the tourism management field, 

the mother and wife made a career change which allowed 

her personality to blossom even more. “I’ve had a passion for 

people for as long as I can remember, so I studied BTech Tourism 

Management before giving classes in that field. This was in 

Kimberly for about three years. I enjoyed my students but then 

my husband was relocated to Bloemfontein. That was when I 

was introduced to the field of real estate by looking for a home 

ourselves.” 

Presently, her areas of focus include Dan Pienaar and 

Langenhoven Park but she also works in the whole of 

Bloemfontein from north to south. “I kept walking into a real 

estate angel, Erna van Vuuren, who is now my principal at Aguila 

and she gave me the opportunity to also be an agent who is an 

angel to others. I get to work with people and use my passion 

to find a home or investment property for each person crossing 

my path.” 

Velindi is also a mother of two little boys who keep her busy 

during the day and sometimes at night too. 

“I enjoy running and taking part in décor 

activities but currently the rest of my 

time goes into raising my 4-year-old 

and 1-year-old sons. My hobbies have 

changed to playing in the mud and 

catching bugs,” she jokes. 

“My hopes are to see people grow 

and take hands for the year ahead 

that may be difficult for some.

For an African wedding 

of your dreams, you can 

use a combination of 

heritage and creativity to 

make your day perfect. 


Local wedding expert, Karlé Potgieter, 

expresses that this theme is for the 

bride who is looking to do something 

different and out of the ordinary, yet 

still on-trend. 

“When it comes to make-up, current 

wedding trends are very natural, dewy 

looks, while dresses are tight fitting, 

using a lot of lace.” 

You can definitely incorporate the 

figure-hugging African silhouette into 

the current trends, while keeping it 

modern by mixing delicate lace with 

structured shweshwe fabric. 

The natural and youthful makeup 

trend can come to life with earthtoned 

palettes that will allow natural 

features to stand out, creating a 

unique and beautiful look. 

“For a stunning dress that will be 

something out of the ordinary, 

local designers Sade Jansen, Casper 

Bosman and Gerhardt Shebe are three 

dressmakers that African brides can 

keep their eye on,” says Potgieter. 




Ideas that take the 

(wedding) 

cake 

In this tough economic 

climate more and more 

bridal couples opt for 

the affordable option 

of unconventional 

wedding cakes because 

of shrinking budgets. 


Although unconventional wedding 

cakes are ultimately much less 

expensive, cake expert, Chef Nicolas 

van der Walt of the FBI Chef School, 

says it could hurt the industry in the 

long run. 

“To be honest, I hope it’s just a trend 

during these hard economic times. 

We have so many skilled cake artists 

in the country and this will not give 

them opportunities to grow and 

explore their amazing talents. 

“If couples want to break away from 

the boring traditional wedding cake, I 

would suggest they rather let a skilled 

cake artist design a cake for them 

and do something different with an 

absolute ‘wow factor’. 

“This could be complemented by 

having a drawing board with flowers, 

venue, crockery cutlery, table designs 

and décor on the table.” 

However, says Van der Walt, if 

you absolutely have to go for an 

unconventional wedding cake, 

options such as doughnuts, cupcakes, 

dessert shots, pies, cake pops and 

cheese cakes work extremely well.

reducing the carbon footprint 

on your big day by having 

an eco-conscious wedding. 

Supporting the eco-friendly 

trend, is 22-year-old florist, 

Chané van der Westhuizen 

from Wildflower Floral 

Studio, Floristry and 

Wedding Botany Studio, 

who shared her thoughts on 

the new trend. 


Without noticing it, your big day can 

be wasteful, with excess food being 

thrown away and paper goods and 

flowers ending up in the garbage bin. 

Making the right flower choices for 

your wedding can help. Chané wishes 

that the eco-friendly trend will be 

welcomed in South Africa and more 

specifically, that it will become key to 

use eco-friendly, locally grown and 

organically certified plants. 

According to Chané, a big factor 

contributing to the carbon footprint 

is that not all florists live near flower 

markets and have to order in bulk 

to eliminate the chance of shortage 

or travel costs. “Florists can’t see the 

condition of the flowers before a 

purchase, and the biggest problem 

with this is wastage as so many 

blooms get thrown out. Buying from 

local growers not only helps the 

community, it also means we can 

buy as we need and we don’t have so 

much waste every week.” 

With flowers being a focal point 

at weddings, freshly cut plants are 

not always the best thing for the 

environment but there are always 

fantastic eco-friendly wedding 

alternatives. Potter flowers such as 

spray roses or orchids can be used 

and you can even go as far as to use 

herbs and even trees. A great idea to 

go with this, is to get married outside 

somewhere in nature or in the garden. 

Do your research before appointing a 

florist and check if they are sustainable 

florists. 

The big question remains: what do 

you do with the bouquet and all the 

other flowers after the wedding? Turn 

them into compost for your garden or 

dry them and store as confetti for your 

next event or a friend’s wedding. 



Budget friendly 

and out of the (wedding gift) 

box ideas 

Budgets may be tight after the last few 

months but you can still give the newly 

married couple a gift to remember. Here 

are a few ideas that will not only be 

meaningful but will help you to spoil 

them without breaking the bank. 

1His and Hers pillow cases. The one thing we all 

need, is a comfy place to rest our heads. The 

new couple will definitely need that after a long 

day of entertaining wedding guests. Whether 

you buy a pair of “Mr and Mrs” inscribed pillow cases 

or if you have the sewing skills, make a set of your 

own, this thoughtful gift will be appreciated. 

Personalised crockery. This one is a quick

and easy DIY project if you want to gift 

them a beautiful set of cups or even a 

custom casserole dish. If there’s one thing a 

new couple needs, its kitchenware and all 

you need to make your item of choice all the more 

special, is a permanent marker or enamel-based paint 

and an oven. To set the colour, bake the piece of 

crockery in the oven for 30 minutes at 170 degrees.

3Offer a service. If you’re on a tight budget 

and have a great skill you can offer your 

services to the couple during or after the 

wedding. Not only will you be giving a useful 

gift but you’ll probably save them some cash. It’s a 

win-win situation. You may be able to be a volunteer 

photographer, baker or bartender. If you don’t have 

a special skill, you can help to set up at the wedding 

venue or run errands on their very busy day. 

Make a gift basket. This option will both

fit any budget and be sure to please. You 

can make a gift basket of things that the 

couple enjoy doing together, whether 

it’s camping or wine tasting. Another great option is 

a honeymoon hamper that can include everything 

they may need during their time away together. Get 

creative! 

5Go vintage. This will need you to invest more 

of your time compared to your money. Visit 

thrift shops or scout Facebook Marketplace 

for beautiful antique items that will make for a 

gift that stands out. If you’re patient enough, chances 

are that you’ll find a special item that’s not only useful 

but has a piece of history attached to it. You may 

have to fix it up with a new coat of paint but it will 

definitely be a one of a kind. Make sure that the item 

is not damaged.

says from a décor point 

of view, he would say 

the biggest eco-friendly 

trend is potted flowers or 

plants. 

Eco-friendly décor is not only 

trendy but also cost-effective 


Ulrich advises when busy planning your big day, you should keep 

in mind potted flowers such as orchids, spray roses or plants like 

herbs, modern succulents or kokedama. You can even consider 

event trees, which you can reuse at your home or even transplant 

in your garden. “Instead of cut orchid stems, rather use the 

beautiful plant as table décor and give the plants to your guests as 

wedding favours.” 

According to Ulrich, a trend that has been going on for years is 

the al fresco theme. “You can create an outdoor look inside your 

favourite venue while fresh herb plants create amazing textures 

and fresh aromas at your venue.” Eco-weddings are not only for 

environmentally conscious couples but a greener mind-set can 

help to simplify your big day and at the same time be more costeffective, 

like using recycled paper as name cards and menus on 

your table.

A good idea is always to rather rent your décor items and not buy

“I think it is our responsibility to the environment and by starting 

with your wedding décor, you will set an example which will 

hopefully inspire your friends to do the same.”
