Inspired: Richard Pietruska

Years ago when I was in college,

I had a great instructor Richard

Pietruska. He was one of the

coolest teachers at the school, at

least to those of us in the Industrial

Design program. He has had many

favorites as well,” said Pietruska. “I

was inspired to create this piece by a

story in the November 2017 issue of

Porsche Panorama. It explained how

Porsche’s 917 delivered the German

carmaker its first overall win at the

motion of the automobile, while

simplifying the basic design lines of

some of the most exotic vehicles of

the past and present.

His work has been featured in

various magazines, including Road

well know automotive designers go

through his classroom. He would

always have a great way of helping

everyone turn out some amazing

designs and art.

As well as being a great teacher

and designer in his own right, he also

does fine art, which we are sharing

here today. If the art of motion can

be captured in a sculpture, Richard

has done it in a remarkable way.

For this particular piece,

PORSCHE 917K – Spirit of Le

Mans, Richard creates a beautiful

speed form capturing the grace and

elegance of the 917K in motion.

“This is one of the most iconic racing

Porsches in history, and one of my

24 Hours of Le Mans during 1970

and then repeated in 1971. The car

also played a leading role in Steve

McQueen’s racing epic film, Le

Mans, promoting racing to a much

broader worldwide audience.”

The fiberglass sculpture is 6’ long

by 22’ wide and features the iconic

Gulf racing colors. The piece is

highly stylized and curved, showing

both speed and motion.

His use of various media –

from paint to tapestries – focuses

on automotive sculpture, using

techniques ranging from bronze

casting to cast resin and fiberglass,

stainless steel and plastics. His

sculptures exhibit the dynamic fluid

& Track, Automobile Magazine,

The Robb Report, Pilota, Octane

Magazine and Garage Magazine.

He is also one of the few automotive

sculptors to have been chosen to

do the artwork for the Meadow

Brook Concours d’Elegance poster.

In addition, Pietruska has designed

awards and trophies for many

automotive events, including the

Car of the Year Award for

Automobile Magazine, the

Cranbrook Concours d’Elegance, the

Petersen Museum and the Newport

Beach Concours d’Elegance.
