Ag Bytes outstanding achievements in agricultural business, production, processing or service programs. To be eligible, FFA members must have earned and productively invested $10,000 through a supervised agricultural experience in which they own their own business or hold a professional position as an employee, in addition to other requirements. Allison Rueter, Central DeWitt graduate will earn ag studies degree from ISU this spring. Rueter worked at Rueters Rabbits, taking care of rabbits, feeding and training them to show. She had an agronomy sales internship with River Valley Cooperative, worked at Susie’s Studio, painting, assembling and selling tin can garden flowers, and worked at Smicker Hamps and Downs, feeding, watering, washing and training sheep to exhibit. Heinrich elected to another term as VP of Iowa Farm Bureau Federation Joe Heinrich of Jackson County was re-elected in December for a twoyear term as Iowa Farm Bureau Federation (IFBF) vice president during the organization’s annual meeting. Heinrich has served as IFBF vice president since 2011. Heinrich, a Jackson County farmer, farms with his family, including his wife Shelley and other family Joe Heinrich, Iowa Farm Bureau Federation VP members. They have a diversified farming operation including corn, soybeans, oats and hay. They also have a beef cow-calf herd and a dairy operation. Heinrich was first elected to the IFBF board in 2004, representing District 6, prior to his service as vice president. Before his election to the state board, Heinrich served as Jackson County president, vice president, voting delegate, young farmer chair, and served on the state internal study committee. Unwind and enjoy an off-farm experience with other farm couples In response to high levels of both personal and financial farm stress, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is offering three “Farm Couple Getaways” aimed at farmers wanting to take advantage of activities to improve farm family communication, work on farm or family goal setting or farm transitioning, or who would just like a weekend away to discuss farm and family issues. The first getaway will be held Friday and Saturday, March 26 and 27, at Best Western Plus in Dubuque. The dates and locations for It starts here! Ag Bytes the other getaways are: Friday and Saturday, April 9-10, at Lake Shore Center at Okoboji in Milford. Friday and Saturday, April 16-17, at Hotel Winneshiek in Decorah. The getaways run from 12:30 p.m. on the first day to 3:15 p.m. on the second day. There is no cost to attend, as food, lodging and other expenses are being paid for by sponsorships. However, there is a $50 per couple deposit to hold each reservation, refundable on the second day of the event. “Past Farm Couple Getaways have proven to be beneficial to farm couples. They are a productive and delightful time to discuss items of importance to help farms and families be successful,” said Larry Tranel, dairy specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach. Each getaway will consist of 10 farm couples and the extension facilitators. Registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis, due two weeks prior to each session. Registration brochures for the various sites can be obtained from select ISU Extension and Outreach county offices, or from dairy specialists. USDA extends general signup for Conservation Reserve Program The U.S. Department of Agriculture is extending the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) General Signup period, which had previously been announced as ending on Feb. 12. USDA will continue to accept offers as it takes this opportunity for the incoming Administration to evaluate ways to increase enrollment. Under the previous Administration, incentives and rental payment rates were reduced resulting in an enrollment shortfall of over four million acres. The program, administered by US- DA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA), provides annual rental payments for 10 to 15 years for land devoted to conservation purposes, as well as other types of payments. Before the General CRP signup period ends, producers will have the opportunity to adjust or resubmit their offers to take advantage of planned improvements to the program. As one of the largest private-lands conservation programs in the United States, CRP provides both economic and conservation benefits by taking land out of agricultural production. This signup for CRP gives producers an opportunity to enroll land for the first time or re-enroll land under existing contracts that will be expiring Sept. 30. All interested producers, including those on Indian reservations and with trust lands, are encouraged to contact their local USDA Service Center for more information.
