Search finds monarch’s winter colony
COLONY: Mike Bowie is pleased to have finally found the
overwintering monarchs, viewed from a walkway bridge
over Liffey Stream off Leinster Tce.
• By Susan Sandys
AFTER YEARS of searching,
Lincoln ecologist Mike
Bowie has found the Liffey’s
overwintering colony of
monarch butterflies.
Some Lincoln residents have
reported seeing from 40 to 200
butterflies in the domain each
autumn and winter for at least
the last five years. But they are
difficult to spot. The butterflies
generally rest with their wings
closed, making them harder
to see. They can move between
trees before ultimately settling
for the winter.
Bowie said he had been to the
area where he had heard about
the colony in previous years and
earlier this autumn and set out
to look again just recently. This
time he was successful, his attention
having been drawn to the
site as one or two butterflies fluttered
their wings when another
landed on the tree.
He said the colony this year
comprised about 200 butterflies,
high up in large eucalyptus
trees, which can be viewed from
a walkway bridge over Liffey
Stream off Leinster Tce.
He said the large number
could be due to a range of
factors, in particular, the
possibility that more people were
planting swan plants.
RESTING: Monarchs are fluttering between large
eucalyptus trees as they settle in for the winter.
“The only reason they are in
New Zealand is because people
are planting swan plants, which
are not a native of New Zealand,”
Bowie said.
The butterflies themselves
are, however, native, having first
appeared in New Zealand about
1873. It is believed they islandhopped
their way here.
Bowie said while it was good
to see people encouraging monarchs
with swan plants, he urged
gardeners to also give consideration
to planting for other native
or endemic butterflies such as
copper butterflies, red admirals
and yellow admirals.
“The admirals feed on stinging
nettle species, while coppers
feed on ground covers including
Muehlenbeckia complexa
(pohuehue),” he said.
Exciting
new chapter
for district
– Broughton
• From page 1
The centre was built by Apollo
Projects and designed by Warren
and Mahoney.
Said Apollo Projects chief
executive Paul Lloyd: “We’re
incredibly proud of the way this
project has turned out and love
seeing so many people enjoying
it. The council set us a challenge
to deliver a great space for the
community on a relatively
tight budget – especially for a
facility like this. Our team has
put in a huge amount of work
and it really shows in the final
product.”
Broughton said the sports
centre was the start of an exciting
new chapter for the district
as long-term plans for the
dynamic, growing district begin
to open.
“This is a big year for us as
this is the first of four major
long-term projects worth over
$70 million that we’ll be opening.
The sports centre is a really
fun way to start, knowing in 12
months’ time we’ll have the new
extended pool, the health hub,
Te Ara Ātea and a new Rolleston
town square as well.”
Sports groups greet new
• By Susan Sandys
THE NEW $21.5 million Selwyn
Sports Centre has been much
anticipated by sports groups.
Selwyn United Football
Club president Darren Sudlow
said the Foster Park indoor
courts complex was long
overdue.
“I think it’s a fantastic step
forward for the community,”
he said. “It’s very exciting in
terms of adding sporting value
and community value to Foster
Park.”
The centre would become
the club’s new focal point at its
Foster Park base, where it had
been using a temporary shed
for changing rooms and a house
for staff to work from. Now
staff would operate from shared
office space in the centre, and
players would be able to use the
changing rooms there.
The men’s first team had
toured the facility prior to
opening.
“They loved it,” Sudlow said.
There had been plenty of talk
among members since about the
centre’s digital play wall.
The club saw potential for
this to be used in school holiday
programmes, something
members hoped they might be
able to run in conduction with
FORMALITIES: Sir Richard Hadlee and Mayor Sam
other sporting codes at the
centre.
The club had been running its
futsal games at the West Melton
centre and would now be able
to shift these to the Selwyn
Sports Centre. It was hoping to
run futsal tournaments there in
future.
Selwyn Sports Trust executive
officer Jess McJorrow agreed the
centre was long overdue. She
was excited to see it open, and
she expected it would ultimately
attract more people to play sports
in the district.
“It’s just providing another
great opportunity for sports and
physical activity and recreation
to occur,” McJorrow said.
Selwyn Netball Centre
president Andrea James said
while netballers were yet to use
the facility, indications were it
would be well received.
“It’s a really impressive
looking facility, and I’m sure
our members are going to love
playing on the sprung wooden
floors,” James said.
The sports centre was allowing
the club to grow in terms of
being able to offer different
programmes in an indoor
environment. The majority of
year 1 to 4 games would be held
at the new centre, and the allure
of indoor games had already
pulled in more players, so much
so that the club was struggling to
fit them all in.
The club’s growth meant it
would be staging games across
two venues, of the sports centre
and also its current home of
the Selwyn Netball Centre at
Lincoln. She was a little fearful
of players losing the sense of
community they had at the
Lincoln venue.
centre with much anticipation
“It’s a challenge to keep
us together as a cohesive
community,” James said.
Active Selwyn manager James
Richmond said the opening
of the sports centre was the
culmination of many years hard
work.
“Right from the initial master
planning phase of planning
Foster Park, this facility has
been on the radar as something
we wanted to bring to the
community as part of the park,”
he said.
Now the council had all
the recreation facilities it had
planned for Foster Park, and he
was looking forward to seeing
people able to use the space to its
full potential.
“Our vision was for a space
that would be used by everyone
in Selwyn and it’s been great
to see groups from all over the
district already signed up or
keen to use it.”
Regional and South Islandwide
tournaments are already
booked for the centre, managed
by Dave Tippett.
In addition to sports, the
hard floor surface will be able to
host community events such as
markets or car shows.
Work began on the building
in 2019.
GO HORORATA members are
frustrated and disappointed at
the district council’s proposal
for a scaled-down Hororata
Community Centre.
The district council proposed
a $4.6 million centre in its last
Long Term Plan in 2018, but its
latest preferred option in the new
2021 Long Term Plan, on which
consultation closed on Friday, is
for a smaller centre costing up to
$3 million.
“The new facility would not be
as large as previously proposed,
considering the size of population
in this area, the low use of
the existing hall, and proximity
to other council-owned facilities,
such as Glentunnel Hall,” planners
say in the latest Long Term
Plan.
Go Hororata chairman Craig
Blackburn said the organisation
had previously worked with both
the community and the district
council to plan the larger centre.
“The council has made this
change and assumed a funding
model in the LTP proposal
with no discussions with Go
Hororata. This is frustrating
and disappointing after such a
good working relationship being
formed over the past four years,”
Blackburn said.
However, district council
group manager property Douglas
Marshall said there had been
plenty of consultation.
The district council had been
in regular contact with
Go Hororata about the
community centre, and
consulted with Hororata
residents last year.
“Long Term Plans are
always a tricky balancing
act,” Marshall said.
The district council had
considered the varying views,
and everyone had now had a
further opportunity to submit
through the Long Term Plan
process.
Marshall said the district
council and community had
to be conscious of every dollar
spent in a post-Covid environment.
One of the reasons for a
scaled down plan was that
the budget had reduced
by $400,000 when the
Hororata Hall was included
as a heritage asset in the District
Plan. This classification
meant the hall was less likely
to be sold with proceeds going
towards the community centre.
Remaining options in the Long
Term Plan are to either retain the
status quo, or spend $3.3 million
renovating the Hororata Hall
by removing later additions and
adding a separate annex.
The proposal to build a new
community centre has been
controversial in the past.
Last year a group of residents
anonymously expressed their opposition
to the Selwyn Times and
at a community meeting chaired
by Malvern Community Board
member Bill Woods. Many
wanted to instead upgrade the
hall.
elected members of the public
and nine different community
groups, including the Hororata
Community Trust which is
behind successful events such
as the Hororata Highland
Games and Hororata Night
Glow.
Blackburn said Go Hororata
had proven that a new purposebuilt
community centre on
the Hororata Reserve was
needed, via an independent
feasibility study and community
consultation. There had
been $36,000 of community
money invested towards its
development.
The reserve was the third biggest
in New Zealand. It hosted
recreation activities and events
that did not take place anywhere
else in the district.
“A new community centre
on the Hororata Reserve is
an obvious addition to such a
well-used community space.
This facility will enhance
existing activities and create new
opportunities which benefit all of
BUSY: Bhupinder Batth (left) and Nawdeep Singh cook up a storm as they
New bar proves a big hit
• By Susan Sandys
“GONE NUTS,” is the answer
from Craig Bradford as to how
busy Lincoln HQ Headquarters
bar and restaurant has been in its
first two weeks.
He said he and fellow owner
Chrystal Boyne had been caught
on the hop by just how popular
the restaurant had been.
He estimated they had served
more than 1000 people each
week since opening a fortnight
ago. Their newly-ordered
furniture was not due to arrive
for another three weeks and
interior decoration was still
progressing.
“It may be a honeymoon
period, everyone is wanting to
put us to the test,” Bradford said.
He believed other factors
behind them being busy
included the town’s growing
population. It seemed the
restaurant was filling a niche
in the Rosemerryn area of
town.
Some nights Lincoln HQ
Headquarters had become fully
booked and diners turning
up were offered the only other
option of a bar meal.
“I don’t like it when people
walk out the door without a
smile on their face and I work
very hard at trying to do that,”
Bradford said.
They had started overallocated
with a staff of about
30, he expected this to settle at
around 28 people.
Bradford said they were already
looking at extending, by building
on a storage area due to the small
bar having limited space.
They had ordered two large
fish tanks, which would each
have about 10 goldfish in them.
These would be installed inside
and would help divide the
restaurant and bar areas.
Bradford is a well-known
Canterbury hotelier who owns
the Crate and Barrel in Leeston,
while the venture is Boyne’s first
step into hospitality ownership.
She has worked in the industry
for a number of years.
The bar adds to The Famous
Grouse, Flaming Rabbit, Black
Door and Laboratory bars
already established in the fastgrowing
town.
HORORATA Domain is ready
to glow on Saturday with a
crowd of 10,000 expected for the
Hororata Glow Festival.
Cindy Driscoll of the Hororata
Community Trust said tickets
were selling fast. To control
numbers, there would be no
gate sales after a huge turnout of
14,000 people at the last festival
in 2019.
“(This) was an overwhelming
response for
just our second
event,” Driscoll
said.
This year, to
manage crowd
size and Covid-19
requirements,
numbers will be
limited to 10,000.
“Our community is looking
forward to this magical festival.
We have heaps of new activities
this year, including the UV Art
Zone, Mitre 10 Mega Warm Up
Cube and a fairy tree, just to
name a few,” Driscoll said.
“We also have the popular
activities from past years
returning, like the hot air
balloon walk through, the
University of Canterbury
interactive science activities and
the glow circus.”
Live music from the Selwyn
Community Choir, Sam
Bambery and The Bluesettes
and Chilton House would
entertain the crowd until the sun
went down and things began to
glow.
The festival’s trademark night
glow would happen any time
from 5.30pm.
Michael Oakley of Ballooning
Canterbury is looking forward
to the event, as are the attending
balloonists who will be travelling
from all over New Zealand.
“They are so excited to be
coming back to our community.
We will be flying for the four
days leading up to the festival
so keep an eye on the skies,”
Oakley said.
Getting the balloons inflated
and ready to glow required
a huge team effort. Weather
conditions had to be perfect, he
said.
The balloons would be on
the ground and lit up like
giant lanterns, glowing in a
choreographed performance to
music.
Following the night glow
will be a special lighting effects
display that promises to be a real
show stopper, Driscoll said. DJ
Craig Shaw would keep the party
going as he cranked the tunes,
getting the young and young-atheart
up and dancing.
Surrounding the activities
and performances will be 80
stalls, including food, wine
CANTERBURY authorities are
offering free drinking water tests
for homeowners in a bid to check
for harmful levels of nitrate.
The testing, 1-4pm at Darfield
Library today and at Leeston Library
on May 18, was the idea of
the Selwyn Waihora Water Zone
Committee.
It follows a recent study
showing between 300,000 and
800,000 New Zealanders were
exposed to potentially dangerous
amounts of nitrate.
Reports showed 3215 people
drank water with levels so high
health authorities required regular
testing to ensure it did not
slip above the recommended safe
threshold.
Residents using private bores
are advised to take at least 500ml
of their tap water in a clean bottle,
rinsed with water, not detergent.
Zone committee members
will be there to offer advice.
Co-chair Fiona McDonald said
the main risks were to pregnant
mothers and bottle-fed babies.
There was also a potential link
between even quite low levels of
nitrate and bowel cancer.
“Those are the two things,
particularly the media attention
that the colon cancer research
has had lately, that’s really raised
the level of attention on nitrate
levels, and we’re hoping to have
really good engagement and really
good turnout in these rural
communities,” she said.
Unlike town supply drinking
water, which was regularly tested
by councils for things like nitrate
levels, these bores – serving
451,403 people nationally – were
the responsibility of homeowners
to get tested.
It was also thought the water
in these mostly shallow bores
presented more of a risk, with estimates
19,960 could have nitrate
levels exceeding World Health
Organisation limits.
McDonald said the tests would
be indicative only and it would
then be up to homeowners to get
their water tested at a laboratory.
“It concerns us, individual well
owners don’t necessarily have
good knowledge about their own
Have your bore water tested for nitrates
CONCERN: Springston South resident
Mike Glover is pleased the Selwyn
Waihora Water Zone Committee,
represented by co-chair Fiona
McDonald has picked up the baton on
water testing for nitrates.
water supplies. The council has
really good knowledge about the
water supplies it provides, but it’s
those individual owners [where]
it can really vary.”
The testing followed an
informal effort by a group of
concerned residents to let private
well users know about the state
of their water.
Last August, Springston South
homeowner Mike Glover got
together with the Federation of
Freshwater Anglers, who had
managed to get hold of specialised
equipment needed to test
nitrate levels. They invited people
along to have their water tested,
for a gold coin donation.
Eighty turned up including one
woman who was shocked to discover
the water from her spring
was potentially dangerous.
“She was in tears. She said: ‘I
tell everyone about the water, it
tastes so good’, and I said that’s
the bloody thing, nitrate, you
can’t taste it, you can’t smell it,
you can’t see it. You know if it
made the water go red, all the
rivers in Canterbury would be
running pink.”
Glover was glad the water zone
committee was now picking up
the baton.
“It’s the start of something
perhaps. I think they may be
surprised at the level of not just
interest, I think there will be a lot
of concern shown and possibly a
little bit of anger.”
Federation of Freshwater Anglers
president and Canterbury
resident Peter Trolove said the
problem was a case of the region’s
chickens coming home to
roost after two decades of unfettered
growth in dairying.
“People are suddenly saying:
‘I don’t want to live here’.
And so they’re looking to sell
up,” Trolove said.
“The Selwyn region’s the
fastest growing area in New
Zealand. Well, we might have
people departing at the same
rate when they realise that they
might be drinking water that’s
not good for them.”
McDonald said further testing
may be done, depending on
the level of demand this time
around. – RNZ
More paint destined for
Springfield doughnut
• By Susan Sandys
HOMER SIMPSON would
not be impressed.
The Springfield doughnut
has spent more time
than necessary without its
delicious-looking icing in
the past few months.
The popular landmark
was painted in December,
then its top coat began to
flake, so now it is being
painted again. It has been
devoid of its enticing shade
of pink with coloured
sprinkles throughout the
paint jobs, covered instead
in bland shades of undercoat.
Springfield Township
Committee chairman
Graeme Dawson said the
initial job had not been up
to scratch.
Some local residents had
been “jumping up and
down about it” as they did
not like seeing the popular
landmark fenced off and
out of action once again.
Children liked to climb
on the doughnut, even
though it was not there
for that reason, and many
residents and tourists and
residents liked to take
photos with it.
District council reserves
operations manager
Jonathan Crawford said
the township committee
had informed the council
that the paint was starting
to chip after the paint job
prior to Christmas, which
had been carried out as
part of minor restoration
work.
“The paint was recommended
to us, but it turned
out it wasn’t adequate for
the wear on the doughnut.
We’re still in discussions
with the contractor about
how the costs for this
repair will be covered,”
Crawford said.
“The doughnut will be
Thousands turn out for
sports centre opening
Thousands of people enjoyed the day out as the Selwyn Sports Centre was officially opened
on Sunday.
Sir Richard Hadlee officially opened the building, before leading a group of local school children
on the first tour.
The opening was followed by a family day out where people could try out the new facilities as well
as enjoying the Selwyn Aquatic Centre directly opposite, along with bouncy castles, pony rides
and food trucks. Thousands of people enjoyed the day, and made donations to the Halberg Trust.
The $21.5 million centre features New Zealand’s first interactive digital playground, along with eight
sports courts, a 240m indoor walking track and space for community sports groups to operate.
It was a joy to see the building so full and people having such a good time enjoying it, Selwyn
Mayor Sam Broughton said.
“It’s great to see the community able to get in here and to see so many people embracing the
opportunity and having so much fun. It’s a fantastic facility that will be a huge asset to our district
now and long into the future, giving people more opportunities to get active and have fun together
all year round.
The Sports Centre opening is the start of an exciting new chapter for the district as long-term
plans for the dynamic, growing district begin to open, he said.
“This is a big year for us as this is the first of four major long-term projects worth over $70 million
that we’ll be opening. The Sports Centre is a really fun way to start, knowing in 12 months’ time
we’ll have the new extended pool, the health hub, Te Ara Ātea and a new Rolleston town square
as well.
Selwyn Netball, Selwyn United Football, local schools and the Selwyn Sports Trust will be among
the key users and regional and South Island-wide tournaments are already booked.
There will also be a community house for community sports groups to run sports services from.
The four hard floor courts will be able to host community events such as markets or car shows.
Snow place like home
A trip to go skiing turned into a new life and a new home for one
proud Kiwi, welcomed at last week’s citizenship ceremony.
Originally from England, Alistair Kerr was among 25 people from
10 different countries including Ukraine, the Philippines and
Namibia who became citizens of Aotearoa at the latest Council
citizenship ceremony.
Mr Kerr, who co-owns Gnomes Alpine Sports in Darfield, says he
fell in love with New Zealand and Darfield in particular when he
came on a visit to go skiing in 2001.
Fortunately, when he returned to Europe for the next ski season he
met and fell in love with a woman from Darfield, Leith, who shared
his passion for the snow. After a few years of going back and forth,
taking in the winters in both hemispheres and working on ski fields,
the pair decided to settle back in Darfield.
“Her father started the ski shop here in 1982 and in 2005 we agreed
to buy the business. We were still going back to Europe for winters
at the start, but we settled back permanently in 2007. I have always
enjoyed it here, halfway between the city and the mountains. I like
to go that way, up into the mountains, to go mountain biking or
skiing. It’s a really nice community with a local feel. People are really
down to earth and everyone knows each other.”
With the area being firmly home, the business booming despite
the global pandemic and with a five year old son Brockton here he
decided last year that it was time to finally officially become a Kiwi.
“It’s home, I love it and I wasn’t going to go anywhere else.”
Libraries fill with music in May
Selwyn’s libraries will be full with the sound of music over the
next month.
Gigs, lessons, talks and more will all be on offer as part of the
libraries’ celebration of New Zealand Music Month.
Senior District Arts, Culture and Lifelong Learning Coordinator
Mat Logan says there will be activities for all ages with live music,
lessons and workshops to give people a taste of what was out there
in music, and an opportunity to be involved.
“It’s about being accessible, giving a space for anyone who’s
interested to get involved in or learn more about the arts.
And to promote New Zealand Music Month and New Zealand
music generally.”
While the Level 4 Lockdown silenced the libraries over Music Month
last year, live music will ring out again each weekend with Selwyn
artists performing acoustic sessions at each library from 11am–1pm
every Saturday over the month.
“That was really popular with people in 2019. We weren’t able to run
last year because of the lockdown, so it’s cool to be able to bring
that back and highlight local artists again this year,” Mr Logan says.
The Christchurch Symphony Orchestra will be bringing another
music month favourite back with its popular annual music trail
visiting each library, aimed at introducing children to the orchestra
with their fun, family-friendly sessions.
Internationally acclaimed Christchurch folk singer and songwriter
Adam McGrath is among the star billings and is hosting a free
short course on song writing at Lincoln Library on Thursday 6 May.
Described by the NZ Herald as 'NZ's toughest minded songwriter',
McGrath will be sharing his tips and experience in an evening for
anyone with an interest in the process of song writing or a desire to
add some new perspectives to their own song writing.*
Selwyn musician and seasoned busker Lynette Diaz will also be
hosting an interactive introduction for anyone interested in busking
in Lincoln and there will be guitar lessons for adults and children at
all four libraries.*
Draw enough for
Waihora to keep trophy
• By Chris Barclay
THE OPENING salvos of
the duck shooting season
depleted winless Waihora’s
line-up for their Luisetti
Seeds Combined division
one rugby clash with
Lincoln, though a stirring
fightback still enabled last
year’s runners-up to retain
a coveted trophy.
Missing a trio of
frontline players for
Saturday’s pool B local
derby due to recreational
hunting, Waihora still
produced a final quarter
surge to secure a 31-
31 draw to maintain
ownership of the Greg
Sparks Memorial Trophy.
Waihora regrouped
from a 31-14 deficit at
Rhodes Park, with a lastminute
pushover try by
Josh Brown levelling the
scores before a conversion
attempt 15m in from touch
missed the target.
“It feels like a loss. We
were down 14-0, scored
31 unanswered points and
leaked 17 points with 15
minutes to go,” Lincoln
coach Kris Partridge said.
“At 17 points up you
think you’re home and
hosed. They got their tail
up and instead of looking
to score points we were
trying to close the game
out.”
Partridge said Lincoln
also lost three players
due to duck shooting
commitments.
“I wouldn’t say it was
a massive impact but we
definitely didn’t have a
full contingent to pick
from.”
Waihora club captain
Brendon Friel said colts
and division two players
were summoned to fill in
Mike Dixon
for a squad also affected by
injuries.
“We had a young colt
start and another one
was on the bench. A div
two guy played a half and
then came in and helped
us.”
The club attempted
to shift the fixture to
Thursday night but were
unsuccessful.
“We’ve deferred games
in the past (due to duck
shooting) but Lincoln
wasn’t keen,” Waihora
president Mike Dixon said,
who was also away duck
shooting.
He said it was not
unusual for players to be
unavailable throughout the
campaign these days.
“We’re not quite hitting
our straps because we’ve
got guys away, holidays,
they’ve got things booked.
Unfortunately that’s what
rugby’s like now. You can’t
count a boy all year to
be there without having
a weekend away,” Dixon
said.
Southern and Prebbleton
He said while he had previously
played high-level rugby, he had
not been able to dedicate himself
to climbing the ladder because
study and work had always taken
From North Canterbury
a Bachelor of Commerce.
When he finished university he
TACKLE: Tim Murgatroyd brings rugby great Dan Carter to
the ground while playing against Southbridge last year.
Prebbleton club.
He now lives in Christchurch
and is a relationship manager for
the rural team at Heartland bank
in the city.
He has played Canterbury B in
previous years. Career highlights
include playing against the All
Blacks in Game of Three Halves,
and playing against Dan Carter
at Southbridge last year. For the
latter game, where Southbridge
beat Prebbleton by three points,
Murgatroyd had even managed
to tackle the former All Black to
the ground.
“Obviously, I admire him, but
at the end of the day it was just
another tackle on field for me at
time.”
“It was quite surreal to be up
against my childhood hero, it is
something I will never forget,”
Murgatroyd said.
Training in pizzeria
leads to employment
OPPORTUNITY: Celine Jenkins has
a new job after undertaking her
kitchen training at Hell Pizza in
Rolleston.
CELINE JENKINS, of the Rolleston area,
has found permanent employment in a
commercial kitchen after graduating from
a training course she was paid to do.
After undertaking 12 two-hour shifts
at Hell Pizza in Rolleston, learning
everything from food safety to how to
make pizza, the 23-year-old said she
was having a “fantastic time” at her new
workplace.
“It is amazing to have a job, because
now I am more independent, and I have
more money to spend.”
Active in Hell is a partnership between
Hell Pizza and IHC New Zealand, offering
young people with intellectual
disabilities paid industry training in Hell
Pizza stores. Running since 2013, the initiative
has seen 150 people graduate with
new vocational skills.
Hell Pizza Rolleston store manager
Sam Zhou said he was not surprised that
Celine had found employment.
“Celine worked really hard and I’m
extremely proud of her,” Zhou said.
Active in Hell regional co-ordinator
for Christchurch Laura Oldfield-Connor
said when she became aware of an employment
opportunity in a commercial
kitchen, she knew Celine would be a good
fit.
“Celine was really focused during her
training and always happy to do what was
asked. She just got on with it,” Oldfield-
Connor said.
“Shortly afterwards, I was approached
by an employer who wanted to provide
opportunities for people with intellectual
disabilities in a large commercial kitchen
in the Canterbury region. I sent them a
few CVs, and the fact that Celine had Active
in Hell training made her really stand
out.”
And the feedback from the employer,
who did not wish to be named, was that
Jenkins had become an valuable member
of their team, appreciated for not only her
skills, but also her warm smile.
In 2016 Active in Hell won the diversability
award at the New Zealand Diversity
Awards.
The diversability award is presented to
businesses that use innovation to create
employment opportunities for differently
abled people, including those with
physical and mental health conditions.
BACKYARD CRITTERS
Mike Bowie is an ecologist who specialises in entomology
(insects and other invertebrates). Each week he introduces
a new species found in his backyard at Lincoln. His
column aims to raise public awareness of biodiversity, the
variety of living things around us. Check out the full list
of invertebrates found at www.inaturalist.org/projects/
Delicate little moth
introduced from Australia
OVER THE last few years
I have caught 345 species
of invertebrates in our
section at Lincoln.
Astonishingly, 107 of
these species are moths.
One delicate little moth
that was captured one
night in February was
the Echium leaf miner
Dialectica scalariella.
THis moth is brown in
colour with a wavy cream
stripe down the leading
edge of the fore-wing and
has a wingspan of only
10mm.
It was introduced to
Australia for biocontrol of
Paterson’s curse (Echium
plantagineum) but has
since dispersed to New
Zealand.
It is also found from
France to the Iberian
Peninsula, Italy, the
Balkan Peninsula and
more recently in Great
Britain.
Larvae also feed on
other Echium species
and other plants in the
Boraginaceae family.
White coloured pupae are
found in the leaf mine.
With increasing
temperatures and more
extreme winds we can
expect other species to
arrive from Australia and
beyond in the future.
TAI TAPU 149 Cossars Road
Quality in a Sought-After Location
On offer is this beautifully presented 4.068 hectare property,
featuring a large homestead set in an expansive easy care garden
boasting numerous specimen trees and a formal rose garden. The
five-bedroom, four-bathroom home has recently had major
enhancements including new double glazing being installed and
new roof tiles. The spaciousness of the home is evident as soon as
you walk into the large entranceway which leads to either the three
bedrooms located on the ground floor, the sun-drenched lounge, or
into the kitchen and separate dining room. A separate lounge is
located off the kitchen giving space for all the family. Upstairs the
master bedroom has pride of place with separate his-and-hers
wardrobes and en suites, as well as another bedroom and office. The
inground swimming pool has its own changing rooms, shower, and
toilet and is set in a sheltered setting. The large multipurpose shed
located near the stand of mature oak trees gives plenty of options for
a home-based business, as does the helicopter hangar situated near
the home. Possibilities may include storage and/or workspace for
trades-people or contractors, or it may be a suitable space for an
antique centre as it has a built-in auction room. so there are lots of
options for the use of the property.
FOOD 25
Lamb shoulder chops with a tasty twist
Chops are Kiwi dinner
staple. Spice up these
lamb ones with the
fresh flavours of mint
and coconut
Lamb shoulder
chops with mint
and coconut
Ingredients
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
½ cup Fresh mint, chopped
¼ cup Dijon mustard
2 tbsp mint jelly
1½ cups desiccated coconut
6 lamb shoulder chops
2 eggs, lightly whisked
1 to taste salt and freshly ground
pepper
Directions
Preheat oven to 180 deg C. Mix
the garlic, mint, mustard, mint
jelly and coconut together in a
shallow dish.
Dip chops in egg, then
roll them in the coconut
mixture, pressing meat into
the mixture to ensure an even
covering.
Line a roasting pan with baking
paper and place chops on it in a
single layer.
Bake for 15min. Turn the chops
and bake for a further 15min or
until golden.
Lamb shoulder chops are versatile and can be dressed up
with little effort.
Chicken breasts with
tomato salsa
– Serves 4
Ingredients
4 chicken breasts, skinned and
boned, rinsed and patted dry
3 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for
hotplate
8 sprigs fresh thyme
Salsa
2 tomatoes, diced and drained
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
2 tbsp flat leaf (Italian) parsley,
chopped
1½ tbsp capers, drained
1 tbsp lemon juice
¼ tsp salt
Directions
Rinse the skinned and boned
chicken breasts and patted dry.
Put chicken in a shallow dish
and pour 2 tablespoons of the oil
over the top.
Season with salt and pepper
and add the thyme.
Cover with plastic wrap and
refrigerate. Bring chicken breasts
to room temperature before
cooking.
Barbecue the meat on a
preheated oiled hotplate over
medium heat until golden and
cooked through.
Don’t let the plate get too hot or
the meat will dry out and become
stringy.
Alternatively, cook the chicken
breasts in a little hot oil over a
medium heat in a ridged grill
pan.
Season with salt and transfer
the chicken to a plate.
Meanwhile, make the salsa by
mixing the well-drained tomatoes
with the garlic, coarsely chopped
parsley, oil, drained capers and
lemon juice.
Season with salt and plenty of
pepper. Spoon the salsa over the
chicken and serve immediately.
Roast sausages with
apple and kumara
Ingredients
6 sausages
6 bacon rashers
3 bay leaves
2 kumara
2 red onions
2 tbsp olive oil
Salt and freshly ground pepper
2 gala apples
Directions
Place sausages in a saucepan of
cold water.
Bring to the boil over high heat,
then turn down heat and simmer
for 5min. Drain sausages and
allow to cool a little.
Heat oven to 220 deg C. Wrap
a slice of bacon around each
sausage and arrange in a roasting
pan. Scatter the bay leaves,
wedges of kumara and red onion
around the sausages, drizzle with
oil, season with salt and pepper
and roast for 15min.
Scatter apple wedges over
the sausages and roast for a
further 20min, until the sausages
are browned and the apple
caramelised.
Potato soup
- Serves 6
Ingredients
50g butter
2 large onions, diced
1 large carrot, shredded
6 cups chicken or vege stock
750g potatoes, peeled and cubed
Salt and pepper to taste
3 cups grated cheddar cheese
Directions
Ground paprika to garnish Melt
butter in a large, heavy saucepan.
Add onions and carrots and
cook over low heat until tender,
about 10min. Add stock and
potatoes and bring to boil. Cover
and simmer on low heat for
30min.
Puree or sieve soup.
Return to saucepan. Season
then gradually stir in cheese.
Rose setting its own identity and style
• By Mark Henderson
AS ROSE becomes more about
its own identity and style, we are
seeing less mention of the grape
varieties that produce it.
Two of today’s featured wines
have chosen interesting grape
combos, with the Brennan
example utilising tempranillo
and zinfandel (they are the only
winery in Central Otago growing
this latter grape), while the Helio
is a tempranillo, montepulciano
and cabernet franc blend.
What might otherwise be a
mouthful becomes simply rose,
and is all the better for it.
2019 Brennan Gibbston rose
Price: $35
Rating: Very good
Subtle but attractive nose, flecks
of strawberry and peach, a savoury
nuance with stony salinity.
A rush of sweet and sour on the
palate, an almost tingly quality
offers bracing refreshment, which
softens over time. Dry, a savoury
touch, running to a salt-inflected
close.
Salinity more marked with
time; would neatly cut through
the fattiness of sausages off the
barbie.
www.brennanwines.com
2020 Rabbit Ranch
Central Otago rose
Price: $23
Rating: Very good to excellent
Musk, gum fruit jubes a grassy
note.
Fatter in the mouth, an attractive
creaminess building, making
this round and supple.
Hints of spice with a ripe
cranberry/fruit pastille element
carrying on to the long finish.
Develops a grainy edge to the
texture with time, adding palate
interest.
A lot of appeal here.
www.rabbitranch.co.nz
2020 Helio Hawke’s Bay
rose
Price: $25 (500ml)
Rating: Excellent
An intriguing scent of mixed
white flowers and dried strawberry,
time sees this open up adding
savoury nuances and a brown
bread-like note.
Tangy palate, a savoury quality,
quite dry, whipped into line by
the zesty acidity.
There’s a bittersweet edge to the
finish which really gets the gastric
juices going. More of a food style
than a fruit bomb.
www.helio.wine
2020 Mahi Marlborough
rose
Price: $24.90
Rating: Very good to excellent
Brightly scented and boldly
aromatic with lashings of strawberries
and cream.
Creamy entry, tangy, hitting the
refreshment button.
Bright acidity and a saline/seashell
character.
Fruit jube and mixed berries
appear on the close. Really gets
the salivary glands going. Warm
day aperitif, and good with food
too.
www.mahiwine.co.nz
2020 Taylors Adelaide
Hills pinot noir rose
Price: $19.99
Rating: Excellent
Subtle nose of musk, strawberry
and citrus zest, growing over
time.
There’s a suppleness to
this, textural richness building
as boysenberry, summer berries
and orange citrus grow yet
with
a lovely tanginess on the close.
Initially feels just off-dry, but
feels drier as the acidity becomes
more racy and a chalky phenolic
note adds extra grip.
Lots of appeal here.
www.taylorswines.com.au
2020 Jules Taylor OTQ
Single Vineyard Marlborough
pinot noir rose
Price: $34.99
Rating: Excellent
Boldly scented nose, musk,
gum, dried strawberry, savoury
elements, clotted cream with
time.
A rush of strawberry and
berryfruit with stony/minerally
nuances.
With aeration there’s a little
sea-salt entwined with a ‘sucking
on hard candy’ thing going on. A
cool touch to this.
Good depth, nicely
balanced and eminently drinkable.
Nitrate testing after
Water campaigner raises nitrate awareness
A Selwyn water quality campaigner has
needled a public body into providing free
tests for nitrate in private water supplies.
In a notice publicising the tests this
month, Environment Canterbury says
the issue of nitrate in our water has
been in the news recently, with media
reporting on public health specialists’
claims that the maximum allowable level
should be much lower.
“The Selwyn Waihora zone committee
wants to ensure people on a private
drinking water supply are aware they
are responsible for testing their water
and ensuring it is safe to drink, and
are offering free nitrate testing at
Environment Canterbury’s May drop-in
sessions in Darfield and Leeston. If you
wish to get your water tested for nitrate,
just bring at least 500 ml of your tap
water in a clean bottle rinsed with water,
not detergent. Zone committee members
will be there to offer advice on securing
your water source.”
The upcoming nitrate-testing sessions
are Wednesday 5 May, 1-4 pm, Darfield
Library; Tuesday 18 May, 1-4 pm,
Leeston Library
An ECan spokesman told Selwyn
Times there was no specific testing or
event that identified a need for tests in
Leeston and Darfield per se. Private well
owners were routinely advised to test for
e.coli every few months and nitrate every
year.
However, the spokesman said Selwyn
Waihora zone committee had identified
a need to reinforce this message and
decided to champion this following a
letter to the committee last September by
Mike Glover of Selwyn Waihora Water
Improvement Mission (SWIMM).
According to October 2020 meeting
minutes, a zone committee workshop
responding to Glover’s letter discussed
how councils and zone committees
“could get involved”. The body agreed it
“could help ensure that real estate agents,
councils, general practitioners and other
health professionals… all contribute to
getting information out there to people
about the risks and the importance of
having water tested regularly”.
The group also agreed that in 2021 “it
would be a good idea to host a number
of information sessions and talk about
nitrate monitoring, water testing,
legislative changes and some of the
issues raised by Mike”. The committee
decided against having a presence at
last September’s CultureFest but would
consider this in 2021 and agreed to meet
on the Taumutu marae in early 2021,
where it would have conversations on
Treaty Partnership and Te Mana o te
Wai. It was agreed the November 2020
committee meeting would focus on the
Waikirikiri / Selwyn River. For more
Letter stirs action
Selwyn water quality campaigner Mike
Glover reminded the Selwyn Waihora
committee he had been coming to their
meetings on and off for the last five
years or so as he was concerned about
the state of the Selwyn River near his
home.
In a letter to the committee last
September he wrote: “I’m still concerned
about the river, but I’ve become even
more concerned about the human
health effects of nitrate pollution on the
population of Selwyn, including on my
family. With that in mind I’d like to tell
you about what happened on Sunday
August 23, [2020] when myself and a
few other local SWWIM folks ran a
Community Nitrate Testing session for
private well owners at the Springston
South Soldiers Memorial Hall in
Springston South.
“The testing was from 10am to 1pm
and we were rushed off our feet at times
as folk came in with their samples.
Approximately 120 people visited,
and we took over 90 tests on the NZ
Federation of Freshwater Anglers hitech
nitrate testing machine. Folk came
from all over the district - Glentunnel,
Hororata, Greendale, Kirwee, Rolleston,
West Melton, Leeston, Doyleston,
Dunsandel, Southbridge, Killinchy
Springston, Lincoln, Prebbleton,
Broadfield, Greenpark, and of course
many locals from Springston South.
Most of the water samples were from
private wells on rural Selwyn properties.
Of the 82 single well or river tests we
took, 43 were over the 5mg/1 level and
some people, when we told them their
nitrate level was getting close to the
government maximum acceptable value
[MAV] of 11.3mg/l had no idea what
it meant. We had to explain to them
about the issue of Blue Baby Syndrome
and gave away copies of the Canterbury
Public Health brochure on this topic.”
Glover said SWIMM members also
told visitors about studies that suggested
a link between much lower levels of
nitrate in drinking water and colorectal
cancer, and of the government science
panel currently looking into this.
“Other people, when told of their high
levels were visibly upset. One woman
was shocked to learn that the water she
had been drinking for 30 years was now
a danger to infants should they ingest
it in their milk formula. We found that
one farmer and his family were regularly
drinking water that was close to the
MAV nitrate level. He was recovering
from a serious illness and seemed shell
shocked as he told us that had to drink 3
litres of water a day for his compromised
kidneys. The danger for someone like
him is not necessarily the high nitrate
but the increased risk of pathogens that
come with elevated nitrate levels. With
his damaged immune system, he could
get even more unwell if he continued
drinking that stuff.”
Glover asked the zone committee, what
is ECan’s or this committees plan to
ensure people know about this and have
adequate resources to test and treat their
water if it is contaminated and what
level of legal responsibility does ECan
actually have?
“ECan is supposed to be working with
the Canterbury District Health board
regarding health issues around water.
What is the current state of play with
that relationship and what will they
actually do?- on the ground, to help
the rural people of Selwyn navigate this
burgeoning health crisis?,” he asked.
“This committee spends a lot of time
and energy on biodiversity and habitat
restoration projects - which is important
work. However, now it would seem
urgent that we have leadership from
this committee to ensure that time and
energy now be spent on the people of
the rural Selwyn habitat - preparing
for and dealing with the present and
increasing nitrate pollution,” Glover
said.
Know your onions
ONIONS ARE one of must-have
vegetables to grow in your own
garden.
The problem is, once you start
growing and enjoying homegrown
food, the list of must-haves
seems to grow too. But onions are
at the top of that list and should
be grown in every vegetable garden,
and don’t stop there plant red
onions as well
Stagger-plant with spring
onions, regular brown pukekohe
longkeeper onions, pearl drop
onions and red bunching spring
onions.
For newbie gardeners out there,
stagger planting (or staggering) is
when you plant a few seedlings of
the same varieties (ie broccoli or
onions) every few weeks to ensure
you have a constant supply of produce
ready to harvest.
You can grow onions pretty
much anywhere in the garden –
they also grow well in pots. But
make sure the soil is friable (goes
crumbly when you touch it). If
it’s not, simply give it a good dig
over and add a bit of compost and
fertiliser.
Red and pukekohe longkeeper
onions need to be planted 10cm
apart. And if you’re growing them
in rows, make the rows 20cm
apart.
Companion plant spinach in
between the rows. Or you could
MUST-HAVE: Onions are a staple in every kitchen. They are
easy to grow and enjoy having companions.
try growing spring onions inbetween.
Your larger onions will take
will get until they go to seed.
They will be ready to harvest around 20 to 24 weeks to get
much earlier at around six to ready and you can tell when they
eight weeks, so will be out of the are because they start to pop right
rows before the larger onions out of the ground.
need the space. Simply, plant your If they start to flower, harvest
spring onions around 4cm apart them as onions that have started
from the next.
to bolt or go to seed don’t store
You can harvest your spring very well.
onions at any time. But the longer Don’t worry if they’re green,
you leave them the bigger they you can still eat them.
NOURISHMENT: Mix a generous amount of compost with
the soil.
How to plant a fruit tree
NOW IS a good time to get those
fruit trees planted.
Here are some tips:
• Dig a hole that is slightly deeper
than the root depth and which
allows for 20cm clearance around
the roots.
• Mix some compost with the soil
in the base of the hole, then place
the tree and slow release fertiliser
in the hole so that the graft is
above soil level.
• Create a small mound at the
base of the hole and spread the
roots out carefully.
• Before back filling, position tree
stakes. Partly back fill and firmly
compact.
• Continue back filling and compact
once or twice more.
• Water well.
• Stake securely to ensure root
zone can’t move on windy days.
Bare rooted trees bought must
not be left for roots to dry.
• Plunge in water prior to planting
to ensure the roots are moist
prior to planting.
AUTUMN IS a great time to
tackle jobs in the garden that the
heavy summer heat doesn’t permit,
like getting your lawn back
into shape.
Plus it’s an ideal time to sow
winter crops if you haven’t
already.
Here are five tasks to get you
started.
1 The beauty of growing fruit
trees at home means harvesting
fruit when they are at their best.
Tree ripening enhances flavour
and results in juicy, delicious fruit
picked right at their peak. The
last of summer fruit crops like
peaches, nectarines, grapes and
passion fruit are now nearing an
end. Use bird netting to ensure
our feathered friends don’t steal
the last of the harvest.
2 Harvest remaining summer
crops as they come to an end and
start sowing and planting winter
veges. This will allow the roots
of plants time to establish before
temperatures drop much further
and growth slows. Winter crops
include beetroot, broccoli, carrots,
cabbage, cauliflower, silver
beet, spinach, swedes and turnips
3 It is important to ensure
plants enter their dormant season
in the best health. Give them
a final application of fertiliser
so they’re in good condition
to withstand cooler and wetter
winter months and are ready
for growth in spring. In cooler
areas apply fertiliser to fruit trees,
ornamental plants, shrubs and
roses, but don’t let that task run
into next week, the end of April
is generally the cut-off point.
4 Summer flowering annuals
will be at the end of their growing
season. It’s time to remove
old plants and prepare beds
GARDENING 31
Time running out to plant winter veges
MAINTENANCE: Sprinkle bare lawn with grass seed to encourage growth over the winter. Plant cornflowers now for a
display in early spring.
for winter flowering displays.
Prepare soil by adding in plenty
of compost and mix in well with
existing soil to a spade depth.
Some favourite winter annuals
to grow are; alyssum, calendulas,
cinerarias, cornflowers, larkspur,
pansies, poppies, primulars,
stock, sweet william and violas.
Grow them in the garden or containers
to brighten up the winter
months. If planting in containers,
toss out old potting mix and use
new mix prior to planting. Old
mix will be lacking nutrients and
over time can break down and
cause poor drainage.
5 Early May is an excellent
time for lawn renovation or the
laying of new lawn as this coincides
with the cooler temperatures
and more consistent rainfall.
Use a lawn patch for tiding
up smaller areas. Lawn
fertiliser can now be safely
applied in cooler regions where
there is reasonable rainfall. If
there is a dry spell, water regularly
to ensure the fertilisers are
washed into the lawn.
Plenty of bling in Forester X Sport
A READER emailed me the other
day. He had read my recent article
on the Subaru Forester hybrid.
I had made mention of the
horizontally-opposed (boxer)
engine that powers most Subaru
models, and how I related to the
design harking back to the 60s
when I first became interested in
motor vehicles.
Because I mentioned Jowett,
Porsche and Volkswagen the
reader suggested I had forgotten
other important manufacturers
that built flat-four engines – Alfa
Romeo and Lancia.
Sure, both those manufacturers
did produce flat-four engines,
Lancia certainly during the 60s,
but they weren’t commercially
available in New Zealand, and
Alfa Romeo’s flat-four came in
1971. I can reassure my correspondent
that I have fond memories
of the Alfa 33 that I evaluated
in 1989, its boxer engine was
indicative of the sporty image
that Alfa generated at that time.
This evaluation surrounds the
Forester, a non-hybrid model
new to Subaru’s books, of course,
powered by a boxer engine; it’s
a Sport variant also wearing an
X badge, a model that carries a
lot more cosmetic bling than the
model it is based on. The Forester
X Sport sits at $47,490, which is
bang in the middle of the range.
The series starts at $42,490 and
ends at $49,490 for the top-spec
Limited. Incidentally, the hybrid
model also lists at $47,490.
It would take some convincing
to get me into the X Sport, simply
because I find the entry-level
model more appealing, but for
those who want something just
that little bit out of the ordinary
in terms of looks, there’s no doubt
the X Sport has that appeal.
Bright orange cosmetic detailing
is used both inside and out,
there are orange accents on the
front, side and rear underguard
and roof rails, also on the dash
panel and centre console. The
seats are orange-stitched and,
in a nice touch, the cloth trim is
heated and is water-guarded.
To top it all off, the X Sport
model gets 18in black wheels,
the whole package is designed to
capture attention and it certainly
does that, it received favourable
comment during the time it was
in my care.
Elsewhere the X Sport model
gets plenty of other specification.
Major items include satellite navigation,
electric front seat adjustment,
keyless entry and ignition,
electric sunroof and tailgate, and
SI drive – Subaru’s take on engine
management protocols – which
can be adjusted by the driver to
suit driving styles and the type of
journey ahead.
It must also be mentioned that
DETAIL: Orange stitching and trim garnish is used
extensively throughout the Forester X Sport’s interior.
SUBARU FORESTER X SPORT: High level of fitment for popular four-wheel-drive SUV.
the X Sport model also gets the
latest version of Subaru’s clever
Eyesight technology, a driver
assist system that contributes
greatly to a five-star Australasian
New Car Assessment Program
safety rating.
The Forester in this form hasn’t
lost sight of its fundamental concept,
even though it looks racy,
it is still the genuine off-the-seal
sport utility vehicle that will take
you to places many other SUVs
would balk at.
The Forester with its 220mm
ground clearance, permanently
engaged four-wheel-drive and
X-mode driver selectable power
proportioning system is adept
off-road. Just like the XV I evaluated
recently, the Forester had
only done just a few kilometres
so I didn’t venture off the seal, but
I can report from my previous
experience in the Foresters I’ve
driven before that it has substantial
cross-country ability and
will cocoon the occupants with a
controlled, comfortable ride.
That’s the essence of the Forester,
it has beautiful suspension, the
ride is almost soft, but such is the
compliance within the front strut/
rear wishbone system that it is
delicate to ride in yet doesn’t lean
awkwardly in a sealed road corner.
Steering feel is tight, and the
suspension can be felt moving
providing the occupants with
a secure feel, one that exudes confidence
at the steering wheel.
• Price – Subaru Forester X
Sport, $47,490
• Dimensions – Length,
4625mm; width, 1815mm;
height, 1730mm
• Configuration – Fourcylinder
(boxer), fourwheel-drive,
2498cc,
136kW, 239Nm,
continuously variable
automatic
• Performance –
0-100km/h, 9.5sec
• Fuel usage – 7.4l/100km
Like its stablemates, the X Sport
Forester gets the 2.5-litre version
of the quad-camshaft horizontally-opposed
engine. It is rated by
Subaru at 136kW and 239Nm,
these figures more than enough
to propel the vehicle in good
speed, you can expect a standstill
to 100km/h acceleration time of
around 9.5sec, with 6sec to make
120km/h from 80km/h.
Drive is channelled to each
corner through a seven-step
continuously variable transmission.
Subaru has done a good job
making this gearbox work and
feel like a traditional automatic, I
like the noticeable way it changes
ratios and, of course, if you want
to lock it in to any of the pre-set
steps you can do that by paddleshifters
or at the main gearshift
lever itself.
One of the most important
figures that a Forester buyer
would be looking at is that of
its fuel consumption. It seems
we are in the age where that’s one
of the first questions I’m asked
when an evaluation car is in my
care.
Subaru has given the nonhybrid
Forster range a 7.4-litre
per 100km combined cycle rating
(6.7l/100km hybrid). During
my time with the evaluation car
it was constantly listing around
8.2l/100km with 6l/100km showing
instantaneously at 100km, the
engine turning over slowly at just
1500rpm.
In my opinion these figures
are good for a mid-size SUV, and
when you factor in the many
other ingredients the Forester is a
worthy challenger in the crowded
SUV market.
I’ve made no secret over the
years of my enthusiasm for
Subaru product, it just feels so
right to be in, yet the range competes
in the mainstream market.
Subaru will be quick to point out
that it sees its product as being
niche market, and to a certain
extent that is correct, but when
you pitch the Forester against the
multitude of mainstream models
it does slot in perfectly.
I guess that’s why there is major
appeal, the Forester is a lot of
vehicle for the money, and in X
Sport form there is just that little
bit of extra individualism that will
lure those who like to stand out
in a crowd.
Calling Land Bankers, Developers, Lifestylers!
Seldom do opportunities such as this present themselves to the market. Options aplenty here with a total
area of approx. 8.5ha of bareland available to either be purchased in its entirety or as 2 x 4ha blocks.
Land Bankers or developers will be intrigued by the fact that this property sits right alongside the evergrowing
West Melton township and forms part of a proposed 50ha land use change. This change will
see the land from the inner plains rezoned for Living Z and Living 1 purposes. Alternatively, lifestylers will
love the opportunity to build their dream home on one of the sites and develop these blocks into the
perfect country living property. Located right on the West Melton township boundary with shops, parks,
West Melton School and eateries within walking distance. Offering an escape from the hustle and bustle
of big city life, but close enough to access everything you need. Given the options available here and the
uniqueness of this opportunity we expect interest levels will be incredibly high on this property - so call
today to ensure you don’t miss out! Lot 3 - 4.207ha with an access of 0.2 ha, totalling 4.407ha
Lot 2 - 4.078ha with an access of 0.079ha, totalling 4.157ha. Titles are expected approx. July.
What can I do if there’s a
problem with my new home?
Buying something as big as a house is a big deal that can
have a serious impact on your family and financial wellbeing.
Real Estate Authority (REA) say this
is why it’s important for buyers to do
as much homework as they can before
buying a property.
We believe it’s much better to spend a
few hundred dollars on an independent
report by an accredited building
inspector than face having to spend
thousands of dollars on fixing any issues
after the fact.
It can be tempting to settle for the easy
option of using a pre-prepared report, but
if you haven’t paid for it yourself you have
no way of ensuring that it’s legitimate
or being able to take action against the
inspector for an inadequate assessment.
If you’re looking to buy, it’s smart to
find out as much as you can about the
property, including getting someone to
help you understand the outcome of any
report on the building or land.
In some cases, issues are noted on
property reports but buyers are in such a
hurry that they miss them.
If a report uncovers an issue, get legal
advice first if you want to negotiate with
the seller on price.
If you end up buying a property and
discover a serious issue that you think the
seller or the real estate agent failed to tell
you about, the first step is to write down
what happened when you bought the
property.
Gather all the relevant documentation,
such as the building report, the LIM and
the sale and purchase agreement.
“If the property was sold by a licensed
real estate agent, make notes of any
conversations you had with them. If
the property was sold privately, make
notes of any dealings with the seller. Add
any new information you have about
the property, such as a building report
or assessment that notes the problems
you’ve found.”
Think too about what your best-case
scenario outcome is: do you want an
apology, compensation, or remediation
(or all three)?
It’s important to get legal advice to fully
understand your options.
A lawyer will advise you on whether
you have a case against the seller and
what your next move should be, based on
the information you’ve gathered.
If appropriate, they can help you
negotiate with the seller or act against
them. Be aware that you may not be in a
very strong position unless you can prove
that the seller or the real estate agent
knowingly covered up the issue.
If it appears that the real estate agent is
responsible in some way, it’s best that you
deal with them directly.
If you can’t resolve things this way,
the REA handles complaints against
licensed real estate agents and we can
also help you understand expectations
on real estate agents regarding disclosure
of property defects. Check out rea.govt.
nz for more information on making
complaints.
information on buying or selling, check
The best kept secrets
to selling your home
Selling Secret #1: The first impression is
the only impression
No matter how good the interior of your home looks,
buyers have already judged your home before they walk
through the door. You never have a second chance to
make a first impression. It’s important to make people
feel warm, welcome and safe as they approach the
house. Spruce up your home’s exterior with inexpensive
shrubs and brightly colored flowers. Entry ways are also
important. You use it as a utility space for your coat and
keys. But, when you’re selling, make it welcoming by
putting in a small bench or a vase of fresh-cut flowers.
Selling Secret #2: Always be ready to show
Your house needs to be “show-ready” at all times – you
never know when your buyer is going to walk through
the door. You have to be available whenever they want to
come see the place and it has to be in tip-top shape. Don’t
leave dishes in the sink, keep the dishwasher cleaned out,
the bathrooms sparkling and make sure there are no dust
bunnies in the corners. It’s a little inconvenient, but it will
get your house sold.
Selling Secret #3: The kitchen comes first
You’re not actually selling your house, you’re selling
your kitchen – that’s how important it is. The benefits
of remodeling your kitchen are endless, and the best
part of it is that you’ll probably get 85% of your money
back. It may be a few thousand dollars to replace
countertops where a buyer may knock $10,000 off the
asking price if your kitchen looks dated. The fastest, most
inexpensive kitchen updates include painting and new
cabinet hardware. Use a neutral-color paint so you can
present buyers with a blank canvas where they can start
envisioning their own style. If you have a little money to
spend, buy one fancy stainless steel appliance. Why one?
Because when people see one high-end appliance they
think all the rest are expensive too and it updates the
kitchen.
Selling Secret #4: Take the home out of
your house
One of the most important things to do when selling
your house is to de-personalize it. The more personal
stuff in your house, the less potential buyers can imagine
themselves living there. Get rid of a third of your
stuff – put it in storage. This includes family photos,
memorabilia collections and personal keepsakes. Staging
simply means arranging your furniture to best showcase
the floor plan and maximize the use of space.
Selling Secret #5: Don’t over-upgrade
Quick fixes before selling always pay off. Mammoth
13
makeovers, not so much. You probably won’t get your
money back if you do a huge improvement project before
you put your house on the market. Instead, do updates
that will pay off and get you top dollar. Get a new fresh
coat of paint on the walls. Clean the curtains or go buy
some inexpensive new ones. Replace door handles,
cabinet hardware, make sure closet doors are on track, fix
leaky faucets and clean the grout.
Selling Secret #6: Conceal the critters
You might think a cuddly dog would warm the hearts
of potential buyers, but you’d be wrong. Not everybody
is a dog- or cat-lover. Buyers don’t want to walk in your
home and see a bowl full of dog food, smell the kitty litter
box or have tufts of pet hair stuck to their clothes. It will
give buyers the impression that your house is not clean.
If you’re planning an open home don’t leave your pets
around.
Selling Secret #7: Play the agent field
A secret sale killer is hiring the wrong real estate agent.
Make sure you have an agent who is totally informed.
They must constantly monitor the multiple listing service
(MLS), know what properties are going on the market
and know the comps in your neighborhood. Find an
agent who embraces technology – a tech-savvy one has
many tools to get your house sold.
Selling Secret #8: Light it up
Maximize the light in your home. After location, good
light is the one thing that every buyer cites that they want
in a home. Take down the drapes, clean the windows,
change the lampshades, increase the wattage of your light
bulbs and cut the bushes outside to let in sunshine. Do
what you have to do make your house bright and cheery
– it will make it more sellable.
Selling Secret #9: Half-empty closets
Storage is something every buyer is looking for and can
never have enough of. Take half the stuff out of your
closets then neatly organize what’s left in there. Buyers
will snoop, so be sure to keep all your closets and cabinets
clean and tidy.

Your guide to all things Real Estate
in the Selwyn District
The Launch Foundation:
changing the lives of youths
Registered charity The Launch Foundation
has one purpose—to set up young people for a
better future. Created by some of the leadership
team from Freedom Built, a Christchurchbased
home build company, they saw a need
to help and support underprivileged youths
across Christchurch and wider Canterbury, who
were living with less opportunities and support
in their lives. The idea was: build a house as
cost effectively as possible, sell it, and have the
charity distribute the proceeds. With a proper
structure and all legalities covered, The Launch
Foundation was born. And every business that has
been involved can be thanked for helping at risk
children and youth who are suffering from the
effects of poverty, abandonment, crime, addiction
and mental illness.
Overwhelming industry support
Board member Cole Askew says, “Freedom
Built managed and constructed the build but the
willingness from so many people to be involved
was amazing. People wanting to use their dayto-day
skills and resources to build a fabulous
family home and to support the cause.” They had
sub-contractors and suppliers donating what they
could plus, once word spread, people were proactively
asking to be a part of the build, including
other building companies.
How they’re helping youths in need
The house, in Goulds Estate, Rolleston, is now
finished and has just been sold for a tidy $255,000
profit. The Launch Foundation can now put those
funds to good use via their partnering charities:
• Aviva – helping communities to live free from
violence
• Graeme Dingle Foundation – helping children
build self-esteem and promote good values
• Pillars – creating positive futures for children of
prisoners
• Pese Wairua: The Healing Song – supporting
community projects, encouraging social enterprise,
and collective wellness via cultural and spiritual
values.
At the recent launch night to celebrate the build
completion, these incredible charities spoke about
what they do and how funding make such an
important difference. They’ll be able to support
community programmes, clubs and individuals who
support and encourage.
The Launch Foundation is keen to continue on
with building houses. And with a $0 overhead
structure, every dollar raised goes straight back into
the community. If you’re keen to contribute and
support future projects by the charity—whether with
trade, time, service or financially—get in touch with
the team via their Facebook page: www.facebook.
com/thelaunchfoundation/
Together with the Launch Foundation, we would like to thank everyone who has
contributed to the success of the first build. The generous support has been
overwhelming! We look forward to the next project and what we can achieve together.
