Exciting
new chapter
for district
– Broughton
• From page 1
The centre was built by Apollo
Projects and designed by Warren
and Mahoney.
Said Apollo Projects chief
executive Paul Lloyd: “We’re
incredibly proud of the way this
project has turned out and love
seeing so many people enjoying
it. The council set us a challenge
to deliver a great space for the
community on a relatively
tight budget – especially for a
facility like this. Our team has
put in a huge amount of work
and it really shows in the final
product.”
Broughton said the sports
centre was the start of an exciting
new chapter for the district
as long-term plans for the
dynamic, growing district begin
to open.
“This is a big year for us as
this is the first of four major
long-term projects worth over
$70 million that we’ll be opening.
The sports centre is a really
fun way to start, knowing in 12
months’ time we’ll have the new
extended pool, the health hub,
Te Ara Ātea and a new Rolleston
town square as well.”
Sports groups greet new
• By Susan Sandys
THE NEW $21.5 million Selwyn
Sports Centre has been much
anticipated by sports groups.
Selwyn United Football
Club president Darren Sudlow
said the Foster Park indoor
courts complex was long
overdue.
“I think it’s a fantastic step
forward for the community,”
he said. “It’s very exciting in
terms of adding sporting value
and community value to Foster
Park.”
The centre would become
the club’s new focal point at its
Foster Park base, where it had
been using a temporary shed
for changing rooms and a house
for staff to work from. Now
staff would operate from shared
office space in the centre, and
players would be able to use the
changing rooms there.
The men’s first team had
toured the facility prior to
opening.
“They loved it,” Sudlow said.
There had been plenty of talk
among members since about the
centre’s digital play wall.
The club saw potential for
this to be used in school holiday
programmes, something
members hoped they might be
able to run in conduction with
other sporting codes at the
centre.
The club had been running its
futsal games at the West Melton
centre and would now be able
to shift these to the Selwyn
Sports Centre. It was hoping to
run futsal tournaments there in
future.
Selwyn Sports Trust executive
officer Jess McJorrow agreed the
centre was long overdue. She
was excited to see it open, and
she expected it would ultimately
attract more people to play sports
in the district.
“It’s just providing another
great opportunity for sports and
physical activity and recreation
to occur,” McJorrow said.
Selwyn Netball Centre
president Andrea James said
while netballers were yet to use
the facility, indications were it
would be well received.
“It’s a really impressive
looking facility, and I’m sure
our members are going to love
playing on the sprung wooden
floors,” James said.
The sports centre was allowing
the club to grow in terms of
being able to offer different
programmes in an indoor
environment. The majority of
year 1 to 4 games would be held
at the new centre, and the allure
of indoor games had already
pulled in more players, so much
so that the club was struggling to
fit them all in.
The club’s growth meant it
would be staging games across
two venues, of the sports centre
and also its current home of
the Selwyn Netball Centre at
Lincoln. She was a little fearful
of players losing the sense of
community they had at the
Lincoln venue.
