Draw enough for
Waihora to keep trophy

THE OPENING salvos of
the duck shooting season
depleted winless Waihora’s
line-up for their Luisetti
Seeds Combined division
one rugby clash with
Lincoln, though a stirring
fightback still enabled last
year’s runners-up to retain
a coveted trophy.
Missing a trio of
frontline players for
Saturday’s pool B local
derby due to recreational
hunting, Waihora still
produced a final quarter
surge to secure a 31-
31 draw to maintain
ownership of the Greg
Sparks Memorial Trophy.
Waihora regrouped
from a 31-14 deficit at
Rhodes Park, with a lastminute
pushover try by
Josh Brown levelling the
scores before a conversion
attempt 15m in from touch
missed the target.
“It feels like a loss. We
were down 14-0, scored
31 unanswered points and
leaked 17 points with 15
minutes to go,” Lincoln
coach Kris Partridge said.
“At 17 points up you
think you’re home and
hosed. They got their tail
up and instead of looking
to score points we were
trying to close the game
out.”
Partridge said Lincoln
also lost three players
due to duck shooting
commitments.
“I wouldn’t say it was
a massive impact but we
definitely didn’t have a
full contingent to pick
from.”
Waihora club captain
Brendon Friel said colts
and division two players
were summoned to fill in
Mike Dixon
for a squad also affected by
injuries.
“We had a young colt
start and another one
was on the bench. A div
two guy played a half and
then came in and helped
us.”
The club attempted
to shift the fixture to
Thursday night but were
unsuccessful.
“We’ve deferred games
in the past (due to duck
shooting) but Lincoln
wasn’t keen,” Waihora
president Mike Dixon said,
who was also away duck
shooting.
He said it was not
unusual for players to be
unavailable throughout the
campaign these days.
“We’re not quite hitting
our straps because we’ve
got guys away, holidays,
they’ve got things booked.
Unfortunately that’s what
rugby’s like now. You can’t
count a boy all year to
be there without having
a weekend away,” Dixon
said.
Southern and Prebbleton
are the unbeaten teams in
pool B while Darfield and
Southbridge have perfect
records in pool A as do
Saracens and Glenmark-
Cheviot in pool C.
