Once again, we are incredibly grateful

to local resident Terry Angus for

another wonderful cover photo,

reflecting the stunning colours of the

Summer season. You may have seen

some of Terry’s photos appearing on

‘Granada Weather Tonight’.

Nigel Morrell, Chair of Norden Area

Forum, once again focuses in this month’s

community pages on the thoughtless

damage to local moorland caused by the

illegal use of off-road vehicles and the

effort by local police to tackle this problem.

During lockdown, Greenbooth has become

an extremely popular place to visit, not

only by local residents but also those

living further afield due to its wonderful

surroundings and beautiful scenery. We

therefore thought it appropriate to feature

once again the articles that Val Corns,

Chair of the Norden Historical Society

kindly wrote for us a couple of years

ago in which she describes the thriving

community that used to live in Greenbooth.

We have received many calls from

residents telling us how much they have

enjoyed reading Brian Clegg’s recollections

of Bamford. We are delighted to say that

Brian plans to write more of his wonderful

memoires in future issues!

April was a busy month in parliament and

in Heywood, Middleton & Rochdale.

Hospitality and non-essential shops have

reopened, over half the adult population have

had their first vaccine jab and in a couple of

weeks’ time we’ll be able to meet indoors again.

I wanted to say a huge thank you to everyone

for their patience and community spirit as we

get Coronavirus under control.

In Parliament I’ve spoken up on support for the

Armed Forces, asked the Education Secretary

to speak with local schools about helping young

people get their education back on track and spoken

with the Home Secretary about the disturbing news

that the Rochdale groomers are still in our area.

I’ve met with local police to discuss crime and antisocial

behaviour and joined officers on the beat to see first-hand what they’re

encountering day-to-day.

As things open up again, I’m looking forward to getting back out and about

to speak with you, but in the meantime, if you think I can help you with a

Protecting Local Moorland

by Partnership Working

During the last decade,

our local moorland has

been subject to increasing

erosion, much of it caused by

inappropriate and illegal use

by off-road motorcycles and

4x4 drivers.

The activities of these individuals and

groups not only destroys the enjoyment

of legitimate users such as walkers,

riders, runners and cyclists, but also has

significant environmental consequences.

Our ancient peat moors act as carbon

sink, capturing greenhouse gases from

the atmosphere and making a small

but significant contribution to slowing

down global warming. When our moors

are damaged and degraded, they

release captured carbon, reversing the

beneficial effects of capture. Evidence

of this erosion is clearly visible to anyone

who ventures on Scout, Knowl or Rooley

Moors . The ruts and tracks caused by

inappropriate use are making areas of

this unique habitat almost impassable;

worse still the state of the surface is

causing serious harm. A recent broadcast

by Rossendale Mountain Rescue made

it clear that, in recent years, there have

been increasingly frequent calls to assist

people who have experienced lower limb

dislocations and fractures, because of

the state of the surface, a situation made

worse by the increasingly hazardous

rescue routes.

Many people appear to see illegal offroading

on local moors as a “victimless

crime“; this is not the case, the damage

to this environment affects the ability of

Commoners to graze cattle and make a

living in the traditional way. The situation

is made worse when cattle and sheep are

harassed and distressed by these antisocial

groups and individuals. Recently,

some horse riders and passers-by were

assaulted by a group of motorcyclists

in Birtle. These individuals were so

determined to evade capture that, in an

effort to escape, they rampaged through

Ashworth Valley destroying fences, gates

and dry-stone walls as they went.

This is clearly a situation which cannot

and should not continue unchecked. Our

local police forces are using significant

amounts of their scarce resources to

deal with the problem, their frequent

operations across all local moorland have

apprehended not only riders and drivers

from our local area, but some from as far

afield as Merseyside, Wales and in one

case Edinburgh!

Combined police operations involving

GMP and Lancashire Police supported by

the Bury Police Off-Road Unit has resulted

in an increasing number of seizures

and confiscations in recent months. In

order to support enforcement activities,

local landowners, farmers, Councillors

from several Wards within Rochdale

and other local authority areas have

combined forces to donate and raise

funds for the installation of fencing and

other obstacles, designed to inhibit illegal

use. In addition to funding obtained our

local affected Wards and landowners,

the project has had financial backing

from the Duchy of Lancaster and the

Greater Manchester High Sheriff’s Fund

as well as Rochdale and Bury Bridleways

Association.

This important local initiative is designed

to make our moors a safer place for

Commoners and legitimate users and

will, in time, contribute to the preservation

and restoration of our local environment.

It is not legal to use our moors for off-road

motorcycling of 4x4 driving and many

of the protagonists are aware of this;

this is why so many of the apprehended

bikes and the vans which transport them

are untaxed, uninsured, have no MOT,

and eradicated vehicle identification

information. Those who wish to pursue

off-roading can always take advantage

of facilities such as Cowm Leisure in

Whitworth, where, for a very modest

sum, they can pursue their pastime in

safe surroundings without damaging

the environment or the enjoyment of

others. This scheme would not have been

possible without the support of GMP

officers, landowners, Ward Councillors,

working together with Rooley Moor

Neighbourhood Forum, Rochdale and

Bury Bridleways Association and several

Commoners coming together to focus on

this pressing local issue.

The project would not have been possible

without the assistance of Officers

from Rochdale`s Township Office and

particularly our Rights of Way Officer,

Julie Simpson.

celebrating the life of Prince Philip. Many of

our young people have completed the Duke

of Edinburgh Awards at all 3 levels and we

are grateful to Emma Hynes, leader of our

Boys Brigade & Girls Association, who has

guided them to their successes.

From 13th May, the display will be changed

to remember the Ascension of Christ

and again from around Sunday 23rd May

to celebrate the Birth of the Church on

Pentecost Sunday. We are all hoping and

praying that the church will be open for

worship on that day.

As I watched the news of trial events to test the waters for

opening music venues, restaurants and more, I was excited by

the possibilities. Having been a sound engineer in a previous life,

my heart has been broken knowing many people without work

for so long. As for many in the entertainment and food industry

and beyond it has been a rough ride, but we look forward with

hope to live music, great food, and the company of friends.

The move out of the pandemic restrictions feels like a new

opportunity, a chance to turn the page and begin with a clean

start. This is something Jesus offers each day through a

relationship with himself, a fresh start, a chance to get on the

right foot and to flourish. With the idea of setting off on the right

foot, with a chance to start afresh with Jesus we have a new service pattern for our benefice.

Wednesday 10:30 St Michael’s - Holy Communion

Thursday 7pm St Michael’s and St Paul’s - Alternating All Age Worship - a ‘seeker friendly

service’.

Sunday 10am St Michael’s & Sunday 10am St Paul’s - Each Sunday at 10 am, either St Paul’s

or St Michael’s will offer Holy Communion while the other offers morning prayer.

Sunday 1pm baptism - 1st Sunday of the month is St Michael’s, 3rd Sunday of the month

is St Paul’s.

Sunday 3pm St James - 1st/3rd Holy Communion and 2nd/4th Evensong.

Sunday 6:30pm St Paul’s - Evensong 1st Sunday of the month St Paul’s.

5th Sunday - On the 5th Sunday of the month there will be an all-benefice service followed

by a bring and share meal.

ROCHDALE’S SINGING JEWELLER RAISES

£2,000 FOR SPRINGHILL HOSPICE

As featured in last month’s issue and as part of the national

“100” challenge held on 2nd May in memory of Sir Tom Moore,

Rochdale’s Singing Jeweller John Alexander successfully sang

102 songs and raised £2,000 in aid of Springhill Hospice.

The challenge took place in his dining room at home and took him 6 hours

with only a few comfort breaks in between.

Thanks to everyone who donated to this very worthy

cause and well done John!

Norden’s Great British Spring Clean is being hosted again for the 5th year by, Paul Ellison, our local Keep

Britain Tidy LitterHeroes Ambassador from The Friends of Norden Jubilee Park. Following the massive

success of previous years, with hundreds of bags of rubbish collected, we hope again that this year will

be another litter busting event and seeing the community once again come together to keep Norden tidy.

Norden boys clean

up community

Two little boys from Norden have been making a difference

to their community after making it their

mission to tidy up the neighbourhood.

Wilson and Douglas Read, who are six and four,

respectively, have been litter picking near the Caldershaw

estate where they have collected loads of rubbish.

They began litter picking in the school holidays after

their mum bought them a couple of litter pickers –

recommended by a friend as an activity to keep the

boys busy and entertained.

Wilson, who is a member of the Norden Scouts, has been

working towards his community impact badge in

which he has to do spent a significant amount of

time helping his community. He hates seeing litter

out on family walks.

In addition to collecting rubbish, the boys hope to

prevent further littering after installing their own

signs, urging people to take their waste home and

leave only footprints behind in the mud.

Douglas and Wilson’s selfless efforts have also been

recognised by Rochdale Borough Council, and they

plan to help during the Keep Britain Tidy Great British

Clean in Norden next month.

A spokesperson for the council said:

“Superb work; well done. The signage is amazing.”

Ambassador for Local Keep Britain Tidy LitterHeroes,

Paul Ellison, added:

“It’s great to see children trying to keep their local areas

looking spotless.

“Not only does this benefit residents and people who live

nearby, but Wilson and Douglas’ hard work is a shining

example of how we can all make some steps to helping

our planet.

Removing litter, even if it’s not yours, will prevent it ending

up in our waterways and oceans, and prevent wild animals

and pets mistaking the rubbish for food. Norden is proud to

have such thoughtful children in its community.”

Greenbooth

& DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

THE FIRST GENERATION

How many times have you taken a

walk around Greenbooth Reservoir just

taking in the peace and tranquillity of

the beautiful surroundings? Some may

even contemplate the history of what

had laid there before, or for the few

that still remember what life was like

there, they may even hear the echoes

of village life still resonating in their

minds eye.

My interest in Greenbooth was piqued

when I took a walk around the reservoir

and tried to imagine just what it had been

like as a living and thriving community.

Most of what I’d read, starts in 1848 with

James Butterworth as owner of Messrs

James Butterworth & Sons, Woollen

Manufacturer, Greenbooth and his

development of the surrounding village

to accommodate his workers. As I

continued my research I learnt that this

was not exactly the start of the story.

The origins of the ‘Butterworth’s Woollen

Manufacturing empire dated back to his

father, William Butterworth and Sons who

began manufacturing in the early 1800s

in premises known as ‘The Oil Mill’ in

Rochdale. They also had warehouses and

handlooms at Lowfield, Milnrow, later

moving on to premises on Oldham Road

whilst also running a finishing mill at

Greenbooth. Unfortunately, the Oldham

Road mill was destroyed by fire and

rebuilt at considerable expense. After a

second fire, the family were forced to

rethink their location and it was decided

to move the whole operation to

Greenbooth and expand those premises.

Very soon, the sheer expense of rebuilds

on the Oldham Road site and the

extensive construction in Greenbooth

lead to their downfall and resulted in

bankruptcy.

James, unlike his brothers, had not joined

his father in the family business. James

was already a successful Wool Stapler and

was a wealthy man in his own right. He

had however, financially supported his

family by providing the second mortgage

on the premises when they fell into

difficulties. No doubt as a Wool Stapler

James may well have provided much of

the raw material involved in their

manufacturing process. By 1848 James

owned a substantial amount of land in

the Naden Valley, including East Knowl

Colliery, Naden Farm and other farms and

land in the areas surrounding Greenbooth

itself. He also owned Lower Tenterhouse,

Tenterhouse and Upper Tenterhouse.

Following their bankruptcy, the mill

and the few surrounding buildings had

initially gone up for sale in 1847. James

already holding financial interest in the

property, by this point, decided to take

over full ownership of the business.

Already at the age of 62 and having

been widowed for many years, this was

a massive commitment but he was loyal

and wanted to continue what his father

had started. He was known to be a great

orator with a kind and philanthropic view

of life and the village he wanted to create.

He provided housing and a shop for his

workers, there was also a small Co-op

shop. Rent was deducted from wages,

as was payments for milk which was

delivered daily from Naden Farm. Meat,

cheese and eggs were all readily available

from local farms. James did his best to

ensure viability of the village by paying

the workers half their wages in tokens

that had to be spent in the village. This

provided the opportunity for the village

to be as self-sufficient as possible. There

was no pub or church in the village and

villagers made the regular walk to Norden

to worship and to obtain any provisions

not readily available.

Each Monday morning, a large copper

tub of hot water was provided in the

mill yard for the ladies of the village to

bring along buckets to ease the burden of

heating water at home for washing. He

also permitted them the use of the mill

drying rooms to dry blankets or other

heavy items. Coal was in ready supply for

both mill and village use and came down

on the Ariel cable track from East Knowl

Colliery.

James also cared about the social aspects

of their lives, supported local events and

provided a reading room and a daily

newspaper. A year before his death, in

1867, he fulfilled his long held wish of

providing a school for the education of

the children of his workforce.

Greenbooth School was said to be built in

a ‘neat gothic style’ and to accommodate

500 persons. It was opened on 27th May

1867. On the first week there was in

attendance 119 boys, girls and short

timers, this figure increasing to 124 by the

fourth week. The school was to remain

open and in constant use both as an

educational establishment, community

venue and meeting hall for many

community and church events until 1931.

Following James’ death in 1868 his

daughter Mary Hutchinson, who became

notorious for inflicting her rigorous

standards of cleanliness on the village and

its people, took over the sole running of

the Mill, the School and the village itself.

Mary, was an extremely competent

woman and James’ faith in his daughter’s

business ability is borne out by the legacy

in his Will, leaving Mary in sole charge

of his business empire. Mary’s husband,

Robert Hutchinson, was the wealthy mill

owner of Nova Scotia Mill in Blackburn

and each ran their businesses

independently.

I finally managed to trace the original

school records, and had the privilege of

handling these important documents.

These books have revealed so very much

more of the day to day life of Greenbooth

than could have been read in any

history book. I hope at some point in the

future to produce a written document on

my findings which will hopefully give a

greater insight into life in the village of

Greenbooth and perhaps give a voice to

its inhabitants. I will follow up with

some of the content in a future issue

of the magazine.

In the meantime, there is a public display

of photos and researched material in the

Old Library, produced by fellow historian,

Chris Verey. Chris produced this material

to accompany my Greenbooth talk to

Norden & District Local History Society

back in November. Feel free to pop in,

have a coffee or merely browse the display

boards and learn a little more about

such an important part of our history.

Firstly a message from Cllr. Jim Gartside: “Thank you to everyone who was kind enough

to vote for me in this months local election, it never becomes less of an honour to be

asked to represent the people of Norden and as always you have my word that however

you chose to vote I will do my best to ensure that people here are well represented both

locally and on Rochdale Council.”

Aside from the election, ward business never stops so we have all been keeping busy,

dealing with residents’ issues and problems. We were pleased to support an excellent

project to install new fencing on the top of Edenfield Road - the latest addition in efforts

to limit illegal off-road access to the moorland.

We have seen a number of road improvements made with some particularly

troublesome potholes now filled. As new budgets are released we will be making sure

that further issues are highlighted and restorative works scheduled.

We met with Traffic Officers from Greater Manchester Police recently during one of

their speed-check operations. This was one of several operations that have happened

locally in different areas and we are pleased to see them being proactive on this

important issue.

We have welcomed some great new business to the village recently are looking forward

to seeing everyone getting back to more ‘normal’ operating from 17th May.

as he has been working alongside us for many months and has been very active

This month we have still been busy in the ward, we have been working with

residents on Taunton Avenue to help with parking problems and progressing our

project to get much needed crossing points installed at the junction of Roch alley

Way.

We were pleased to see the installation of new children’s play equipment at

Springfield Park, and a special thank you need to go to the Friends’ Group who

made a generous donation towards this. Community payback are also helping the

beekeepers who work on the tennis courts which is always good to see.

Also, lots of residents have been contacting us about the planning application for

houses on Greenbelt land at The Crimble. If you have a view that you would like to

share with us please do get in touch.

IN THE GARDEN

GARDENING TIPS AND ADVICE

FOR JUNE

1. Water thoroughly once or twice a week rather than little and often- this encourages plants

to put down roots in search of water rather than coming up to the surface. Remember that

containers and hanging baskets need watering every day and sometimes even twice a day

if it hot and windy.

2. Hoe beds and borders regularly to get rid of annual weeds, like bitter cress and chickweed.

3. Keep your pond topped up with fresh water – a build up of algae in warm weather can be toxic

if not fatal for animals and marine life.

4. Pick sweet peas regularly – this is in effect deadheading and will ensure

continuous flowering. Remember sweet peas are thirsty plants so keep

them watered.

5. Deadhead bedding plants and flowering perennials, to ensure

continuous flowering.

6. Use a forceful jet from a garden hose to knock aphids off water lilies

and other garden plants.

7. Water tomatoes and peppers regularly to avoid blossom end rot.

Recipe kindly supplied

METHOD

1. Oven temperature 140c, 130c fan, gas 1. Line 2 trays with

non-stick baking parchment.

2. Whisk the egg whites until stiff, add 1 tablespoon of caster

sugar and the cream of tartar and continue to whisk for

1 minute. Fold in the remaining caster sugar and ground

almonds.

3. Divide the mixture between the 2 trays and spread into

2 x 8” rounds. Bake for 1½ hours or until the paper easily

peels away from the meringue. Leave to cool.

INGREDIENTS

4. Hull strawberries and chop roughly, lightly crush with a

75g ground almonds or ground hazelnuts

fork. Mix in liqueur or Limoncello

4 egg whites

5. Dissolve the granulated sugar in 125mls water, add the

200g caster sugar

lemon juice and boil for 3 minutes to make a sugar syrup.

Pinch of cream of tartar

Sauce: 1 punnet strawberries

6. Whip the cream, sweeten to taste then fold in 1/3rd of

2-3 tablespoons of raspberry liqueur or limoncello

the strawberry mixture. Spread between the meringue

250mls double cream + extra for decoration

rounds.

Extra sugar to taste if needed

Decoration: 25g icing sugar

25g grated chocolate

7. Dust the top with icing sugar and decorate with the extra

whipped cream, grated chocolate and sliced or halved

strawberries.

Whipped double cream to pipe rosettes on top (optional).

Strawberries cut into halves or slices to decorate.

8. Dilute the remaining crushed strawberries with the sugar

syrup and serve as an accompanying sauce.

Government initiatives such as the furlough scheme, the stamp

duty holiday and 95% mortgages have created a perfect storm

for property buyers...

MAKE THE RIGHT MOVE

March saw a phenomenal 145,000 properties added to

Rightmove.

But despite new homes being added to the site daily, this has

not been enough to meet buyer demand.

The average house price across England has now hit a whopping

£268,291. Prices have increased at a rate of 0.87% per month

since the introduction of the stamp duty holiday.

Demand is likely to ease as more parts of the country emerge

from lockdown, but appetite will remain above average levels for

this time of year through Q2.

Time is running out for home-buyers to take advantage of the

stamp duty holiday, so you need to act now.

The suspension of the stamp duty on properties up to

£500,000 is still available for transactions which complete by

Wednesday 30 June.

After that, the levy will need to be paid on properties worth

more than £250,000, as the holiday is phased out. The usual

£125,000 threshold will return in October.
