For many people, this past
year has been one filled with
loss. Whether it be loss of a
job, a relationship, a dream or
even the loss of a loved one
through death, loss affects us
deeply and in different ways.
Many people try to numb
themselves to the pain of loss
through addictions, busyness
or other avoidance behavior.
However, the only effective,
helpful response to loss is to
grieve.
People often deny themselves
the freedom to grieve.
Why? Simply put — it hurts.
Our human nature is to avoid
pain. However, it is only when
we allow ourselves the space and
freedom to feel pain as a natural
response to loss that we actually begin
to heal.
healing.
When grieving, it is important to
remember that time alone does not
heal the pain. Rather, it is doing
the work of grief over a period of
time that allows the heart to heal.
Give yourself time and space
to feel and express your
feelings of disappointment,
confusion, anger, guilt and
deep sadness. Recognize
that there is no “right” way
to grieve, and understand
that some need to process
their thoughts and emotions
outwardly by talking and being
around others while others
need quiet and solitude.
Regardless of how you grieve,
don’t let yourself become
isolated.
Hope Counseling Clinic in
Winter Gar den is ready
to help anyone who is stuck
in emotions that feel overwhelming
or anyone finding themselves
coping through avoidance of
pain. Let them help you get started
on a healing journey. ª
