The sixthgeneration Floridian and secondgeneration owner of Main Street Mower of Winter Garden and Clermont, decided to drive his Toro 4000 Series lawn mower 130 miles across the state of Florida from east to west. Last month, 14 hours after he departed from the coast in Titusville, Chip arrived in Spring Hill on the Gulf of Mexico. According to him, “It was fantastic!” Much more than a joyride, the journey was to benefit West Orange Habitat for Humanity, the nonprofit organization that helps families build and improve places to call home. Chip chose the nonprofit as his fundraising recipient because he appreciated the value of its mission. “I wanted to do something that would be a blessing for a family in my community,” Chip said. Dubbed a “mowathon” by Chip, the trip was planned with full support of the Florida Department of Transportation, Toro marketing and legal teams, and a police escort SOUTHWEST Mission Mowathon Local Man Makes Coast-to-Coast Journey on a Lawn Mower through three of the counties he traversed. In the counties that were unable to provide police support, a “crash truck” — like a wide-load signal vehicle — followed behind to provide additional safety. “Everyone [who] was part of the mobile team was in contact via walkie-talkies, and the trek was livestreamed on Facebook,” Chip said. While he described the weather as “perfect,” the drive that began at 5:50 a.m. was actually “quite chilly.” Chip forgot to bring along a jacket or sweatshirt, so for the first two hours, he was shivering. “My Florida body was not ready for the cold,” he said. “I warmed myself by resting my hands on the hydraulic oil reservoir.” SPOTLIGHT by Leona Braun Once the sun rose, it was 80 degrees with a 12 mph breeze, which could be classified as perfect for being outdoors. Midway through the journey, Chip took a brief side trip past his family business, Main Street Mower in Winter Garden, where Habitat for Humanity representatives hosted a barbecue lunch in support of his efforts. After making minor adjustments and wolfing down a burger, Chip was back on the mower and on his way westward. While in Hernando County, the longest stretch of the two-lane highway he rode on, Chip rarely came across any vehicles on the road. But, when a car or truck did pass by, there was honking, waving and thumbs-ups. Sometimes cars sped by him too fast to react. By 7:40 p.m., the sun was setting as the Toro mower reached the Gulf Coast on only one tank of gas. Chip’s wife, Deborah, and the couple’s four children were waiting for him. There was not only a Champagne toast but Chip was sprayed with the beverage, like a driver who had just won his race. By the next morning, the journey had raised nearly $10,000.
