The First
Academy’s
A Night to
Remember
FrontYard
Festival, held at
the Dr. Phillips
Center for the
Performing
Arts, is a huge
success.
The First Academy hosted
a first-of-its-kind performance called
A Night to Remember FrontYard
Festival, during which students showcased
their talents for more than
700 spectators. Held at Dr. Phillips
Center for the Performing Arts,
the show started with the school
band’s Great Movie Adventure. The
choir performed Somewhere Over
the Rainbow, and Lower School
Evening At The Arts students sang
to Alice in Wonderland, Seussical
and Music Man. TFA fine arts students
also earned accolades recently.
Gabriela Torres won an
Applause Award for outstanding
performer, Benjamin Englund
won an Applause Award for outstanding
singer, and Matthew
Melley was nominated for outstanding
performer. Gabriela and
Benjamin will be performing as part
of the Dr. Phillips Applause Awards
Ceremony on June 5, and Gabriela
will also be competing for the Jimmy
Awards, the National High School
Musical Theatre Awards.

Teacher of
the Month
Congratulations to Southwest
Orlando Bulletin May 2021 Teacher
of the Month Heather “Ms. Ras”
Rasmussen, fourth grade teacher
at Lake Whitney Elementary.
Ms. Ras was nominated by Jennifer
Grassi, mom of Elizabeth and
Charlotte.
“Ms. Ras has got to be one of the
sweetest, most caring teachers I’ve
ever met. We have been fortunate
to have so many amazing teachers
for my twin girls, but she has been
phenomenal with them despite the
past year with all of the COVID-19
impacts,” Ms. Grassi said. “She truly
cares for each and every child in
her classroom [and] takes the time
to get to know each of them, what
motivates them, where they struggle
and how she can assist them to be
their very best. She has great communication
and is always willing
to go the extra mile for both her
students and her parents. My girls
were struggling with math, and she,
on her own time, would offer to do
tutoring after school. This caught on

with the other students in her classroom,
and soon she began spending
after-school time with many of
her students, not once but twice a
week, just to give them the extra
help and encouragement they needed
to be successful. The creativeness
that has come out of social distancing
has been a sight to see, and she
never ceases to amaze me on how
to effectively navigate through such
an unusual time.”
