New Zealand is a country built on the strength of family
businesses – and in this issue, we prove this to be so,
twice over.
Lilly Cooper’s foray into property development was
an undeniably bold move for a youngster. Fast-forward a
few decades and daughter Caroline, in her early twenties,
showed signs of that same gumption, joining her mum in
creating Christchurch shopping precinct The Colombo. This
dynamic duo now does everything together, from developing
community-focused retail precincts to walking their dogs every
morning. It seems they are never far away from each other.
Distance isn’t an issue for Tess Lyes and mum Vicki
Bastion. Together they run wood-wick candle business, Nevé,
despite one living in Christchurch and the other pouring the
wax on the West Coast. Nonetheless, business – and their
relationship – is booming.
When generations come together, great things happen. It
takes a village to raise a child, and a diverse mindset to raise
our local businesses to the next level.
“A real challenge, the background has a repeated
A brand new concept in
window furnishings
Everyone loves curtains, they’re elegant, soft, and
stylish – but they’re either open or closed.
Veri Shades have the feel of curtains with the versatility of blinds.
The soft fabric hangs beautifully. There are no weights or chains so you
can walk through them anywhere, whether they’re opened or closed –
they just sway out of the way and settle back perfectly. This makes them
perfect for creating a soft feature across a large opening. Veri Shades can
span up to six metres and are all made in the Venluree factory.
Veri Shades aren’t just stylish, they’re practical, safe
and will complement any home or office.
Veri Shades use a single track, giving you more space in your rooms and
only taking up half the space to achieve the same results from curtains.
The fabric folds are soil resistant and can be easily taken down and
individually washed, or replaced in a matter of seconds.
The fabric is UV stabilised so it is resistant to fading. Fire retardant Veri
Shades are also available. There is no PVC or filler in Veri Shades and
Venluree are about to launch new colours within the next few days.
Veri Shades are made from a wonderfully soft fabric
with alternating opaque folds.
With the new unique patented designed Veri Shades you can have the
elegance and versatility of a sheer and the privacy of a curtain. With
the turn of a wand you can easily adjust the Veri Shades to control
and adjust light levels depending on the position of the sun, or
privacy required.
• Turn the wand one way and the opaque fabrics provides privacy and
light blocking.
• Turn the wand the other way and the mesh fabric lets more light
through.
• Open the folds halfway for filtered light.
• Draw your Veri Shades right back like curtains for full sunlight.
Lilly and Caroline
Caroline Cooper-Dixon watched her mother build developments growing up.
Now, they create communities together.
Words Shelley Robinson
baby quizzically eyes the two women whose laughter has
A caused coffee to spill over the side of their cups. Such
merriment cannot be ignored and so, with arms pumping, the
baby soon chortles along too.
It’s mid-morning at The Colombo, Sydenham’s boutique
retail and entertainment centre on Colombo Street.
Generations gather to share hot drinks and friends show each
other what treasures they have found.
“This place still has that community vibe,” observes
Caroline Cooper-Dixon with a satisfied smile. After all,
that is what she and her mother, property developer Lilly
Cooper, intended.
The dynamic between this mother-daughter duo reflects
the activity around them. They are not just business partners
but great friends – the perfect synchronicity of different
generations working together in cohesion.
Their days start at 7.30am, when Caroline pops around the
corner to join Lilly so they can walk their dogs to Lux Espresso
on Gloucester Street for a coffee and a scone. Then it’s home
to change, ready for the first of a series of meetings at which
they will tag-team each other. The people they meet, says
Lilly, quite like the familial connection – and the way the pair
naturally banter. They effortlessly bring levity to the room.
But their day together doesn’t end with meetings.
“We’ll have dinner together, either with my brothers
[George and William] and their partners [Lucy and Bridget]
and mine [Harry], or one of us will cook for the other and
debrief on the day,” says Caroline. (Lilly loves to cook a roast
while Caroline prefers a cheeky gluten-free pasta.)
But make no mistake, they are a powerhouse development
duo who, with Selwyn District Council, are creating the
Rolleston Fields $85 million retail and hospitality town centre
in Selwyn. It will feature a retail precinct, with bars and eateries
plus an entertainment and cinema complex.
But before we get carried away looking at the future, we
head back to the 1980s, when a very determined 19-yearold
took the plunge into development with an eyebrowraising
purchase.
LILLY
If she had been born a boy, Lilly Cooper would have “had
a nail bag put on [her]” and been sent out to do construction.
“My father was a builder. But because I was a girl, I got into
property developing instead,” says Lilly.
But she wasn’t the type of person to cautiously dip her toe
in. She bought 14 houses in one hit.
“They were in two streets: Peacock Street and Beveridge
Street [Christchurch]. I’d bought them off one old lady who
lived in Nelson. I got a six-month delayed settlement. When
I settled them six months later, I sold all 14 of them on the
same day – I settled them in the morning and sold them in
the afternoon.”
ABOVE: The Colombo, a boutique retail and entertainment centre, was the first project mother and
daughter team Lilly Cooper and Caroline Cooper-Dixon worked on together. Photo: Supplied
Style | Feature 21
And with that, she had found her niche in an industry that
was very male-dominated. Forty years on, she still loves it.
“It’s a moving target. You get up and every morning you
learn something new – the industry is moving. Technology,
the way people shop, the way people make things, the
construction – it keeps moving,” she says.
From a young age, Caroline knew her mother was a force
to be reckoned with in property.
“Mum always had a drive to get out there, and property
was her thing. Then in my teens I was like, ‘Whoa, she’s
bold with her decisions – I want to be like that.’
“She loves to put a deal together and can do it just like that.”
Caroline snaps her fingers. “She’s incredibly good at numbers.”
When Lilly fought breast cancer two years ago, Caroline
was on hand once again to witness her tenacity.
“It’s just her strength, you know? She went through it and
she got straight back to work. It is her passion and you can’t
fault her for that because that is where she gets her enjoyment
on a day-to-day basis.
“She is extremely giving to those around her, too.”
CAROLINE
Lilly knew there was something unique about her daughter
when it came to retail and entertainment development – and
it is said without maternal bias.
Caroline was 23 when Lilly asked her to work with her on
The Colombo. She had recently returned to New Zealand from
studying design at Central Saint Martins University of the Arts
London and had been working in commercial sales and leasing.
“She was very fresh and had the most creative ideas. She
saw retail like no one in Christchurch had seen retail,” says
Lilly matter-of-factly.
And how Caroline saw The Colombo was on the
backdrop of a need – a need for a fractured community to
be connected.
Lilly bought the Sydenham-based building from receivers
in 2010 for $12 million. But on February 22, 2011, a 6.2
magnitude earthquake struck, leaving the city devastated and
185 dead.
The city was in deep mourning and the central business
area decimated, cordoned off for months.
A legacy, built on creating communities, because that
is what they love to do. Together.
“Lilly wanted to turn it [The Colombo] into a Dress-Smart,
but I was like, ‘We’ve got to house the people. There is no
more retail – the [central] city is a red zone and we need to
create space not far from it.’
“We need to stick together – people needed to be
together to experience that human interaction,” says Caroline
emphatically.
It was, she says, all about building community – and one
that endures over time.
THE BREAK AND A NEW PROJECT
After The Colombo, Caroline cared for her father Johnny
in his final years out at Akaroa, while she opened a small
hospitality business and did her consulting work from there.
It was while she was working with Selwyn District Council
that the town centre project came about. Lilly had just
finished her cancer treatment, so Caroline had a thought.
“I rang her and said, ‘Do you want to do this?’ and she said,
‘Absolutely,’” They pitched and got the job.
“So we signed up for another five to 10 years together,”
says Caroline with a grin. But 10 years on from The
Colombo, it is a different type of partnership.
“The Rolleston town centre is a bigger development but it
feels less stressful for us because we’ve had all that learning of
working together.
“Dad’s passing taught us to be gentler with each other. We
have a lot more patience to really enjoy this development.”
Lilly says the reason the partnership works is because there
is the cohesion of generational knowledge.
“It’s the old and young thing – it’s amazing. Her strengths
are my weaknesses, and my weaknesses are her strengths.”
An example is how Caroline has taught Lilly about a wellbalanced
life.
“She’s a great one at balancing her life, so I’m learning
that. I’m much older and we didn’t have that when we were
younger – we would just work, work, work,” says Lilly.
Caroline’s eyes flick up. She has seen her next meeting
arrive. She sets off with an easy stride and a full, genuine smile
to greet them.
“She has the three Fs,” observes Lilly. “She’s focused, she’s
friendly and she’s firm.”
So they’re off. They have a town centre to build together.
A legacy, built on creating communities, because that is what
they love to do. Together.
retail precinct, with bars and eateries plus an entertainment and cinema complex; The Colombo is known for its boutique stores. Photos: Supplied

OF
Auctioneering
With auctions being one of the
strongest driving forces in today’s
marketplace, I thought I’d talk about
the world of the auctioneer or at least
my impressions gained over many
years of observation. And what better
place to start that conversation than
here in Wellington at our National
Auction Competitions.
It takes a special individual to master
auctioneering and although I personally
gave it a try over 24 years ago, I didn’t have
the passion that I’ve witnessed in others, and
sensibly decided against pursuing it.
Now join me whilst I share the scene of the
event I’m watching.
There are 15 individuals, predominantly men
(come on ladies), and they all have one thing
in common, confidence – and, for the most
part, eloquence too.
Dream-weavers and scene-setters, some are
an absolute joy to watch and listen to.
But the competition itself is tough. Tricky
numbers and numerical equations all
designed to trip and trap a weary contestant.
The questions have involved contractual fine
print and minutiae at their best and highly
orchestrated scenarios at their worst.
Some of the contestants answer with
confidence though not accuracy and the odd
one is completely bamboozled. It’s funny
how as an observer you start rallying for any
underdogs, hoping they’ll recover from a
difficult start or a testy bidder.
The best today have been storytellers, authors
of a new occupant’s dream and the current
owner’s decorating ambitions. Their stance
can either help or hinder; open arms, eye
contact and a ready smile favour the better
contestants.
I’ve yet to pick the winner as that will come
later, long after I’ve submitted this article for
publication, but overall, I’m very impressed.
A competition has an artificial element to it
that makes it extremely hard, harder than
real life, in fact. For real life, feel free to join
us every Thursday at Harcourts gold Papanui,
whilst our very own team of auctioneers guide
clients through their auction buying and
selling ventures.
Dedicated and determined, I value deeply
what they add to our company – and to their
profession. Property inspection and auction
calling, as well as negotiation participation,
define part of their role, but the main element
is teamwork.
A culture cornerstone and an enduring
business value of mine.
So, let’s hear for the auctioneers out there.
Collectively, they add something very special
to our industry and our city.
The connection
Some people said it wouldn’t work with the Southern Alps as the divider,
but Nevé founder Tessa Lyes and her mum Vicki Bastion
are creating luxurious candles on opposite coastlines.
Words Shelley Robinson
It’s 5.30am at Vicki Bastion’s bed and breakfast in Blue
Spur, Hokitika. She heads to the kitchen where jars
with wood wicks wait, lined up like obedient children.
She flicks on the wax melter – the very reason she has
to wake up so early. It will take about five hours until the
wax to make Nevé candles is pourable.
Nearby is a small book in which Vicki neatly makes
notes from the last batch of candles she made, including
the all-important temperatures. Though the crackling noise
from a wood wick brings with it a gentle ambience, the
candles themselves are very “temperamental” creations,
even fussy about the ambient temperature of the room.
Finally when everything is perfect, she begins her seven
hours of pouring.
Is she a bit of a candle mad scientist? She laughs with
delight at the thought and her daughter’s voice chimes in.
“Perhaps, perhaps,” is Tessa Lyes’ reply.
This is only the start of the journey for a Nevé
candle. Once carefully packed into Vicki’s, Tessa’s or
her brother’s car, they have a 250km journey ahead
of them, winding up and around the Southern Alps to
Christchurch where Nevé and Tessa are based. It makes
for a beautiful image of these candles making a journey
from mother to daughter across the Alps. For Tessa, the
mountains have a strong link to her brand.
“Névé is the French word for when the young snow,
over millions of years, compacts down and forms a
glacier – it is very Southern Alps inspired,” says Tessa.
Style | Feature 25
The deep blue of the boxes pays homage to the
“deep southern lakes” where her business began in a
Queenstown flat, and the “pop of gold” represents the
gold rush.
This connection to New Zealand’s natural wonders
helped guide Tessa when she was looking for a product
to start her own business.
“I like the idea of a natural product with the wood
wick and how it tied into the beauty and natural element
of New Zealand – I thought it was a perfect combination
for a New Zealand candle.”
But she quickly found its serene beauty required a
careful balance of creation.
“I found out quickly it is really easy to make a candle,
but it is really hard to make a good candle,” she says.
“There are natural oils in wood and that’s what makes
it crackle softly like a fire. Because of those natural oils,
you’ve got to have your numbers absolutely perfect
otherwise the flame might be a little dim, or might burn
too strong, which would cause it to burn through the
candle too quickly.”
She launched her brand in 2018, after two years of
testing, then moved to Christchurch in 2019, which is
when her mum joined her in the business. Vicki had just
finished working full-time and offered to become “head
of manufacturing”.
“She’s gone from learning off me to being the absolute
expert. I wouldn’t dare try to make a candle now,
because hers are so much better!” says Tessa.
“I don’t know about expert,” Vicki murmurs.
“You’re pretty good,” Tessa replies.
Not all mothers and daughters could work together.
But for Vicki and Tessa, it has enhanced not only their
relationship but their deeper understanding about
each other.
“Tess asks me for feedback and takes it on board
– listening to her mum sometimes!” says Vicki.
“You say that like it is a surprise,” says Tessa,
pretending to be indignant, and the two laugh at each
other in the way only mothers and daughters can.
It is Vicki’s attention to detail that makes her perfect
for the art that is candle-making.
“She has high expectations and is quite hard on herself.
She’ll put a red sticker on one and say, ‘I don’t know if
this one is perfect.’ And it’ll only be half a mil off! She’s
very transparent if something has gone wrong and that’s
what you need,” says Tessa.
For Vicki, working with her daughter reinforces what
she already saw in her growing up.
“If she decides she is going to do something, she does
it. She’s been like that since she was a little thing – she
hasn’t changed, her goals have just gotten bigger. She’s
quite inspiring, my daughter.”
And though a few people told Tessa it wouldn’t work
– the distance between candle maker and distributer
being divided by the magnificent Southern Alps – they
should have known better. A mother and daughter duo
can move mountains.
Be passive
Make the most of the sun’s warmth to help heat your home.
Interior designer Michelle Laming has your quick guide to passive heating.
ABOVE: North-facing windows welcome in free heat from the sun.
30 Style | Home
H
arnessing the warmth
from the sun to heat
your home can have a
positive effect in that it
reduces dampness and
condensation while also
reducing heating costs. The
key to passive heating is
two-fold. First, you need to
capture the right amount
of sunlight through your
windows, and then you need
to manage that source of
free heat within your home
so it is kept at a pleasant
temperature. This is achieved
by using a combination
of smart design and good
insulation, which in turn
reduces overheating.
New & old
With a new build, one of the key factors is the orientation of the
home to maximise efficiency for heating in winter and cooling in
summer. You need to make sure you get plenty of sun streaming in
during winter, for instance. To do this, you need to make sure your
home is designed to maximise the sun’s warmth by having northfacing
windows. You also need to look at the natural environment.
Are there neighbouring trees or buildings that could block the sun?
Passive heating can be improved in an existing home without
making major alterations. The most common way is to insulate the
roof cavity. I’m a fan of doing double or triple layers in this area,
up to 30cm, because it makes a major difference. Make sure you
insulate under the floor too. If you are relining walls, do consider
double insulating these – it makes a tremendous difference to the
amount of heat you lose from the home.
Transfer it
If you are renovating, consider
installing a heat transfer system.
These are specifically designed to use
excess heat and send it around the
home to make it a cosy temperature
throughout. This means that when
the sun is warming up your northfacing
room, you can send that heat
to the cooler rooms. It is also good
for those who have heating in a main
room, like a gas or wood fire.
An underutilised source of heating
is a home’s roof cavity – particularly
if it’s an older home where the
building’s orientation to the sun wasn’t
always a consideration. Transferring
the heat from the roof cavity into a
living area or such is a wonderful way
to use this heat, especially on a frosty
day when the sky is blue and sunny.
Get glazed
Double glazing is two panes of glass with an insulating layer of inert
gas or air between them. Installing double glazing can help reduce
heat loss through glass by about 70 per cent, which means that the
sun’s warmth stays around in your home instead of disappearing
through the window. It also means you have less condensation on
your window panes because the seal stops it from building up.
Framing is important – plastic or wood are less likely to attract
condensation than aluminium frames. If you have an older home,
you can get double glazing retrofitted.
Style | Home 31
Trap it in
Trap in the heat of the sun with good curtains or blinds. If you do it
right, you can stop nearly two-thirds of your heat from disappearing out
the window. Keep your curtains open during the day to make the most
of the sun and close them as soon as the sun sets to trap that heat in.
It is best to opt for well-interlined drapes, shutters or honeycomb
blinds (they have fabric cells that trap air, acting like insulation)
over a Venetian or roller blind. According to a Consumer NZ test,
honeycomb blinds are a ‘star performer’ because they retain more
than 60 per cent of the heat lost through a window.
Do
• Make sure your curtains are
lined for extra insulation.
The extra layer acts as an air
trap. It has been reported
that lined curtains are more
effective than thermalbacked
curtains.
• Make sure your curtains
are floor-length and wider
than your window frame.
Curtains that are not sealed
at the top or bottom create
a ‘reverse chimney’. When
it is cold outside, the air
by the window pane cools
and goes to the bottom of
the window, where it gets
replaced by warmer air from
the room – creating an air
current that chills the room.
MEET THE TEAM
The tallest poppy
Standing at two metres high, Kieran Ball really is the tallest
Tall Poppy of them all.
Kieran, tell us a little about why you chose real estate.
In 2018, I was a personal trainer and one of my clients, who was
a very successful real estate agent, told me I would make a good
agent. My friends were also telling me the same thing! But I pushed
it to the back of my mind. But last year, when Covid-19 took away
plans for me to do my OE, I decided it was time to take a leap of
faith into real estate – and I haven’t looked back.
What was it about Tall Poppy and Debi Pratt
that drew you to the brand?
It was the Tall Poppy values and ethos that
spoke to me. They gave me a gut feeling
that it was where I belonged. Right from
the minute I met Debi, she was welcoming,
approachable and a pleasure to deal with. I
think we spoke for around 20 minutes about
life, fitness and diets before we even got into
the real estate chat, which is exactly how I like
to operate.
What is your approach when working
with clients?
It is the genuine touch – this is why you never
see me wearing a three-piece, pinstripe suit
and tie because that corporate image simply
is not me. Real estate is a people business,
so you have to be yourself and for me that
means having fun, being professional, building
rapport, all while making the process exciting
– because buying and selling houses is exciting!
Debi, you have added yet another member
to the Tall Poppy family. What are the
qualities you look for when bringing on
another team member?
I look for the basic human values of kindness,
openness and a genuine desire to do right by
people – and he meets all of those!
Why is Kieran a good fit for Tall Poppy?
From our first meeting, Kieran showed all the
qualities I value. He was also in a corporate
environment and felt uncomfortable with the
high-fee structure and how it was apportioned.
Our model is completely different – and, I
feel, a lot fairer to both our vendors and our
salespeople, so he really responded to this.
Apart from that, he is just a super nice guy.
What are you most proud of from those
who work with the Tall Poppy brand?
My team all care and help each other out,
which is so refreshing in this industry. I’m
really proud that I am building this foundation.
We have fun alongside the ultimate aim of
delighting our clients – and from the client
testimonials we receive, we are achieving this!
EXTERNAL AFFAIRS
with Tim Goom
Compass Pools Ambassador
Andy Ellis on life
in the Big Apple
You’ve been living in New York with your family for
the last few months- what have you been up to?
We are living in New Jersey, across the Hudson River with
incredible views of the New York skyline. I’m playing halfback
for Rugby United New York. It’s so fulfilling spending my later
playing years in the company of great men who were brought
up in completely different cultures (from 11 different nations)
but with a shared passion- it makes us instant mates.
The many contrasts between Christchurch and
New York must have presented a few challenges
for you when you first arrived?
We arrived in New York in February stepping straight out of a
beautiful kiwi summer to knee deep snow and the bustle of New
York City. The contrast was extreme. We were thrown straight
into strict pandemic rules and have worn a mask every single day
since we arrived. Our kids had to adapt to a completely foreign
school in a very busy New York City and to wearing a mask for the
entire school day- which they’ve done
without complaint.
The view from our apartment is truly
amazing! Every night different colours
light up the Empire State Building.
On Valentine’s Day it was flashing
pink in a heartbeat rhythm while
on St Patrick’s Day it was bright
green. We’re adept at apartment
living, having spent six years in an
apartment in Japan. We love the
amenities and the easy care that a
smaller place offers. This inspired the
smaller floor plan of our last house in
Christchurch while our Compass pool
continued the apartment living vibe.
With the world still
battling the global
pandemic, your
journey through it
has been varied and
across a few countries.
We were living in Japan
in February 2020, just as
the pandemic was starting
to take hold. We headed
home for a short visit but
while home, NZ was placed
into lockdown and we
were unable to return to
Japan. This cut short my
sixth and final season with
the Kobelco Steelers. The
abrupt end was tough as we
adored our life in Japan but we felt very lucky to be home with our
families. Our Compass pool was a lifesaver during lockdown. We
swam every day. I used the pool to stay fit and it provided endless
hours of entertainment and fun for the kids. This meant when the
phone call from Rugby United New York asking if I had another
season in me as a 37 year old, I confidently said “bring it on!”.
Our first job upon arriving in New York was to build our own gym!
It’s easy to get used to the luxuries that are bestowed upon a
professional rugby player in this era so to go back to basics and
see my team constantly making sacrifices to be able to front up for
their team and a game that they love is inspiring. I am humbled to
be a part of it.
What changes have you seen there since you arrived?
New York is due to completely reopen by June. I can’t wait to take
the kids to a Broadway show once they return in September!
I have been so impressed with the efficiency of the vaccine
rollout. There is a definite sense of pandemic fatigue here, people
desperately want life to go back to normal. We have been so lucky
in New Zealand to live relatively normally but I am also grateful
that I’ve experienced the American perspective. It makes me very
grateful for modern medicine!
What is next?
We’ll be home for Summer then return here for another season
in 2022. We then plan to travel with the kids before returning to
NZ for good. We are in the process of building our next home in
Christchurch, complete with a Compass Pool. With my pool keeping
me in top shape I might even be able to turn out for the Varsity Vipers!
It would be nice to go full circle before retiring from this great game!!
36 Style | Gardening
This may mark the end of the
wafting scent of reheated
fish pie emerging from the work
cafeteria. Embrace the global trend
of food-growing in the office.
Now, that doesn’t mean you
have to start hauling in compost up
the stairs – start small. A number of
crops are willing to grow and thrive
indoors, and they will happily last
the weekend without attention.
To start your office garden, find
a well-lit area. It doesn’t need to
be in full sun; however, a spot
where it isn’t too dark is best.
Avoid the direct air from airconditioning
units on the seedlings
as it dries them out fast.
For a real conversation starter,
it’s a good idea to take your
indoor crops for a walk outside.
This may raise some eyebrows,
but UV light stimulates plants, as
does CO2. Imagine sitting outside
your workplace on a sunny day
with your office parsley, coriander
and rocket in tow. Anything for a
giggle, I say!
Rocket
Even its name suggests it’s quick to grow. With its sweet,
peppery, tangy taste, rocket is a ripper when added to
sandwiches, omelettes, smoothies and (dare I say it) instant
noodles! The best way to approach growing rocket at work
is to find a plastic takeaway coffee container, pierce some
drainage holes in the bottom and fill it with vegetable mix.
Sprinkle rocket seeds on top and water in lightly. The seeds
won’t need water every day – only when the soil feels dry.
Within 14 days, the seedlings should start to appear. Harvest
when they are young, or leave them to mature to finger size.
Try to have a few batches on the go so you never run out.
Sprouts
These couldn’t be easier
to grow and many take
just 10 days to mature.
Try sprouting alfalfa,
mung bean and
brown lentils.
Coriander
Coriander is best suited to offices where
the temperature does not exceed 20°C. If
you let this spicy wee number dry out or
get too wet, it will either turn up its toes
and wilt, or bolt and go to seed. If you
have a workplace that has an outdoor area,
it is best planted there. Coriander will cope
with shade but not extreme heat. The seed
germinates readily, so don’t sow too many
at once as overcrowding can cause them
to damp off. Be patient, as coriander takes
its time to germinate.
Style | Gardening 37
Pea shoots
Not quite as quick to grow as
bean sprouts and alfalfa, pea
shoots are nevertheless ready to
eat within two to three weeks
of planting. Sow as for rocket
and parsley, but don’t cram too
many of these large seeds into
a small container. Allowing a
finger space between each seed
is about right. Pea shoots are a
treat in wraps and sammies, and
they add another dimension to
salads and slaws.
Parsley
A great addition to broths, salads
and soups, parsley is easy to
grow as a microgreen but is just
as tasty snipped, as required,
from a single mature stem. Grow
it as a microgreen in the same
way you would rocket, taking
care never to let the soil dry out.
If the soil does dry out, the plant
will bolt and put all its energy
into forming seed.
When buying parsley seed,
choose from Italian or curly
– or why not grow both!
Lettuce
Lettuce is a hardy,
super-easy-to-grow
vegetable. If you’re
looking for office salad
greens, sow the frilly,
open or cos (romaine)
lettuces as the hearting
varieties are fussier
and require greater
attention. Sow as you
would for rocket.
1 carrot, chopped
½ cup Pams Split Red Lentils
2 cans Pams Garlic & Oregano
Diced Tomatoes
1kg Agria potatoes, peeled
1½ cups Pams Tasty Grated
Natural cheese
the mince, breaking up any lumps as you go, until the meat is browned.
2. Add the onion and carrot and cook for a few more minutes.
3. Add the lentils, tinned tomatoes, soy sauce and 1½ cups water, season well
with salt and bring up to a boil. Lower the heat and simmer gently for 30
minutes until thickened and the lentils are cooked (add a little water to the
mix if it’s too dry).
4. Slice the potatoes 5mm thick and put into a saucepan of salted water. Bring
up to the boil, lower the heat and simmer for 3 minutes. Drain well.
5. Put the cooked mince into a baking dish and top with the potato slices.
Scatter over the grated cheese and bake for 30-35 minutes until bubbling.
Perfect for vegetarians,
this slow cooker dahl
is the ultimate no-fuss
comfort food for those
chilly nights.
Slow Cooker Dahl
Serves 4-6
Prep time 10mins
Cooking time 3 hours
Skill level Easy as
INGREDIENTS
2 cups Pams Split Red Lentils, rinsed
6 cups water
1 tsp turmeric
1 knob of ginger, peeled and sliced
lengthwise into thin strips
70g Pams Butter
3 tsp cumin seeds
3 tsp ground coriander
¼ cup fresh coriander leaves
METHOD
1. Add the lentils, water, turmeric and ginger to your slow cooker
and stir to combine. Cook on high for 3 hours, or until the lentils
are tender.
2. When the dahl is ready, season generously with salt and remove
the ginger slices.
3. Just before serving, heat the butter in a small frying pan over
a medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and let them sizzle until
fragrant. Remove the pan from the heat and quickly stir through
the ground coriander. Pour half the butter mix into the dahl and
stir to combine.
4. To serve, spoon the remaining spice mix over the top of the
dahl and sprinkle with the fresh coriander.
TOP TIPS
• Be sure to serve with Pams Garlic Roti or Pams Basmati Rice.
• If you’re after a bit of heat to add to your dahl, add finely
chopped red chilli when you add the lentils and water.
• Freeze any leftovers in portion-sized containers – it will keep for
up to 2 months.
• To make a vegan dahl, simply swap the butter for coconut oil.

Deliciously decadent and
wonderfully warming,
these chocolate lava cakes
make a grand finale that’s
guaranteed to impress.
Mini Chocolate
Lava Cakes
Serves 6
Prep time 5mins
Cooking time 5-6mins
Skill level Not too hard
INGREDIENTS
170g Pams Finest Dark Chocolate
6 Tbsp Pams Butter, plus extra for
muffin tray
4 Pams Free Range Eggs
(2 full eggs & 2 egg yolks)
1 tsp Pams Vanilla Essence
6 Tbsp Pams White Sugar, plus
extra for muffin tray
¼ cup Pams Flour
1 Tbsp Pams Icing Sugar, to
serve (optional)
METHOD
1. Preheat the oven to 220°C. Prepare your standard-size muffin tray
by generously greasing 6 of the muffin cups with butter and dust
with sugar.
2. Place the chocolate and butter in a large heat-proof bowl set
over a pot of simmering water. Whisk occasionally until melted
and smooth. Set aside.
3. Add the eggs, vanilla essence and sugar to a medium mixing
bowl and whisk until thick, foamy and pale. Add the flour and whisk
vigorously until fully combined.
4. Add the melted chocolate to the egg mixture and fold gently
to combine.
5. Divide the mixture evenly between the prepared muffin cups
and bake in the oven for 5-6 minutes.
6. Remove from the oven and leave to cool for 1 minute. Use a
butter knife to gently loosen the cakes from the muffin tin. Place
a flat chopping board over the muffin tray and, using oven mitts
or a tea towel, carefully flip the muffin tray upside down. Gently
lift the tin and the cakes will come out.
7. Transfer the cakes to serving plates, dust with icing sugar and
serve immediately!
TOP TIPS
• These lava cakes are deliberately undercooked to have a
gorgeously gooey ‘lava’ centre, but are just as delicious fully
cooked!
• Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or dollops of whipped
cream to dial up the decadence.

Dishevelled Sausages
Enjoy this cheeky take on a Kiwi classic, while using up the forlorn apples
in the bowl that no one has eaten.
Words Sarah Burtscher Photo Jet Campbell
While some of the younger
brigade may not have heard of
this classic comfort dish, it is a great
way to use up apples that seem to
lurk around in the fruit bowl. New
Zealanders throw out 5117 tonnes of
apples a year, totalling $14,818,152,
so make good use of your strays by
including them in this dish.
I always add a handful of chopped
baby spinach at the end of this recipe
– the kids don’t. Sigh.
Fridge Cleaner Cooking:
Waste Not Want Not
by Sarah Burtscher,
published by SJKB Ltd,
distributed by
Bateman Books, RRP $39.99
INGREDIENTS
10 small or 6 large sausages – plain beef works best but any
favourite works (non-meat sausages work a treat, too)
2 Tbsp (approx.) high heat oil (I use grapeseed oil)
2 brown onions, roughly chopped
4 large garlic cloves, smashed and roughly chopped
1 leek, finely chopped
1 large carrot, finely diced or grated
dash of Worcestershire sauce and balsamic vinegar
2 or so cups of chicken stock (low salt is preferable)
2 Tbsp tomato sauce
2 apples, cored and cut into thick segments (green apples are
ideal as nice and tart)
lemon juice
1 Tbsp cornflour/potato flour
METHOD
1. In a large pan that has a lid, add some of the oil and sauté
the sausages till browned. Set aside on a plate.
2. If the sausages are really fatty, lightly rinse out the pan.
Replace on stove on a low to medium heat, add more oil
and sauté the onion, garlic, leek and carrot until soft.
3. Add a dash of Worcestershire sauce and balsamic vinegar.
4. Add the partly cooked sausages back into the mixture.
5. Add the chicken stock to cover plus the tomato sauce and
bring to a boil; lower heat to simmer gently.
6. Add apples and cook with the lid on till the sausages are
cooked through.
7. Add a squeeze of lemon juice.
8. Put a couple of full spoons of the liquid into a cup and
quickly stir the cornflour/potato flour in till smooth, then add
to the dish, stirring thoroughly to thicken.
9. Let cool with the lid off and serve with mashed potatoes,
rice, pasta or a grain.

we both like gin.
Reynolds took the love affair a bit further,
however, becoming co-owner of Portland
Oregon-based Aviation American Gin in 2018.
The story goes that he bought his “sizeable” share
in the company because this particular drop was
the best one he’d ever tasted.
It is a great gin. Its aim is to provide a less
juniper-led flavour profile and I expect that’s what
makes for its smooth delivery and easy drinking.
Forget about those fancy flavoured tonics, just
stick with a good, plain one. If you are feeling
Surpassing subtle citrus notes are botanical,
I was still surprised.
Intending to sip it on the rocks for tasting’s sake,
I never did add tonic – and that’s not normal. It’s
neither sharp nor astringent, but pleasant and soft.
Drink it neat by the fire, let the ice melt and ease
your way to the bottom of the glass. Then repeat.
I know I will be.
SUCCESS STORY
A feel for fashion
Briarwood founder Ange Marshall turned her dream into reality and, with
business partner Jayne Thomson, has seen plenty of positive growth.
FROM LEFT: Ange and Jayne
Where does the Briarwood story begin?
It began some 29 years ago when I [Ange Marshall] returned
from abroad with a dream of creating beautifully crafted
handbags. Fast forward a few years and Jayne [Thomson]
arrived in the form of a salesperson extraordinaire, with the
very same passion and work ethic. It was an easy fit when
she then became a partner in the business.
What makes your partnership work?
The same love for the products we create and a genuine
love and respect for each other. Having worked together
for over 25 years we know each other so well. Sometimes
we finish each other’s sentences and just look at each
other and laugh!
At what point did you decide to extend beyond
luxury handbags?
About seven years ago we decided to jump on into
clothing because… why not?! The brand has skyrocketed
as a result and we derive so much pleasure out of seeing
women love our designs and come back for more.
Our handbags remain still very important to the brand,
however. The lining, in particular, is iconic to us – we have
always had a striped or floral lining, which makes it so easy
to find everything inside your bag.
How do you define the Briarwood style?
The styling of the clothing is simple, easy to wear and ‘not
complicated’. We have a lot of colour and bold patterns
that our customers love. Every time they come into one of
our stores, they see something new; we like to keep the
shops looking fresh and interesting.
Is there anything shoppers might be surprised to find on
your shelves?
This is the first season we have done knitwear. We developed
a range of 100% merino jumpers and cardigans, made in a
factory in Auckland, which are divine. The cashmere/merino
blend and our cute fluffy knits are simply fabulous.
How do you keep quality at a high level when the
quantities increase?
It is a challenge, as quality is very important to us, but we
have great staff who are always going the extra mile and it’s
no different when we enter the ‘busy’ time of the season.
You recently opened your first store south of the Strait.
How has the Christchurch reception been so far?
AMAZING! We are so very grateful. The customers are
delightful and so happy to see the entire range in one place
(our wool scarves have proven to be extremely popular in
Christchurch!). We are here to stay!
just can’t – no matter how much we try.
It’s complicated
This should have sent us into
shudders of old school days,
where your club or school netball/
tight elastic down the bottom that
sent the pants ballooning around
your legs. Not to mention the
swish-swish-swish sound they
made as you did your warm-up.
Stella McCartney has this way
of turning things that shouldn’t
work into things we somehow
end up wanting. Is it the colour?
Is it because it looks cute with
boots and a blazer? Sigh. We’re
complicated, we know.
However, there is something about
this whole ensemble that just works.
She looks comfortable – think of that
the next time you’re surreptitiously
jiggling up your strapless bra from
the depth of your navel at a black
You wanna come?”
Froth it up
We like froth, particularly when
teamed with a structured shirt
like when Cinderella decided she didn’t
need anyone to rescue her so she
put her leather jacket on over
her ball gown and sauntered
the heck out of there on
her own, while giving
this. Now, we know we
shouldn’t care what people
think and we are working on
that, but heavens to Betsy,
this is like us going from 0 to
100 in a second. Sometimes
we feel like we could do
this and embrace that wild
inner-preschooler vibe,
but then… oh dear, we’re
going down an ideological
rabbit hole. Suffice to say,
we’re not there yet – Cyndi
Lauper is, Miley Cyrus is,
but we are just simple folk
trying to make it to the
next coffee break.
BALENCIAGA
It’s history?
It’s just like… when you… uh? Okay, perhaps
this is more about capturing a moment in history.
To pay homage to that time when you ran out
of toilet paper during Covid-19 lockdowns and
the supermarket was about to close and the
washing wasn’t done. So, you threw on a very
cute, oversized shirt-dress and your partner’s
sweatpants. And then you strutted down those
aisles owning it, winking at the man in his slippers
and nodding in respect to the woman wearing a
jaunty scarf over her pyjama top.
How do we…
We’re practical people.
How is the bathroom situation
going to work in this?
(We’re still struggling with
jumpsuits.) How do you get in
the car? However, we do like
that it inadvertently has a
handy spot to rest
your drink.

Dr Philip Frost &
Shelley Frost
Skills over mils
With the rise of injectable clinics, Face Value’s
Dr Philip Frost says it is now even more important
to check the expertise behind the needle.
Tips
1. Do not be leD by
price point
“Often you don’t need
to use large amounts to
achieve beautiful outcomes.
We have moved away from
giving people prices before
consultation, because often
they may need less than
a syringe of filler to get
the best outcome – that’s
where skill and experience
comes in,” says Dr Frost.
2. MeMbers
Choose clinics that have
practitioners as members of
the New Zealand Society
of Cosmetic Medicine.
Belonging to a professional
body ensures accreditation,
standards of practice and
the continued upskilling
of members.
3. eMbrace your
natural aesthetic
Do not be led to
unachievable or
inappropriate outcomes
by social media. “Large lips
and over-pointed chins
are becoming normalised.
Understand what is ‘normal
beautiful’ as compared to a
Photoshopped social media
post,” says Dr Frost.
ach face has its own natural aesthetic and there is a deft skill in finding
E and honouring it.
However, Face Value’s Dr Philip Frost says that with an “escalation”
of injectable clinics, sees the potential for quantity to outweigh not only
quality, but the expertise and safe guards behind these medical procedures.
Injectables are not just another beauty treatment.
“These are medical treatments and the anti-wrinkle formulations have
to be prescribed by a doctor, and then can be administered by a nurse
working under standing orders,” explains Dr Frost.
“Complications are, fortunately, rare, but if they do arise, it gives
assurance to clients if there is quick access to medical backup.”
This is especially true of dermal fillers, yet in some cases, overseeing clinic
doctors are not in the same building, city or even in the same island.
“There is great trust in the injector and trust should come with skills,
professionalism, and knowledge. Make sure you understand where the
safest place is to seek treatment, and where you get assurance that if there
is a complication you’ll be managed efficiently and be well cared for.”
There’s not a one-size-fits-all solution either. Says Face Value’s co-owner
and registered nurse Shelley Frost, cosmetic injectables should never follow
a formulaic approach.
“Every face, not surprisingly, is wonderfully different. You should seek a
practitioner with both the skills and artistry, who properly assesses your
face and tailors the treatment to suit.
You want someone who has the required in depth knowledge of facial
anatomy as well as the experience to safely tailor the treatment to achieve
the best outcome.
And that includes accepting the skilled injector knows when you have
reached your natural aesthetic.
“Even if the client wants two mils, it is about having that skill to say, ‘No,
this is where we will stop. I think your lips look lovely at 0.6mls. This is the
natural end point and anything past this will give you an unnatural aesthetic
and can adversely affect how you are perceived and relate to those around
you,’” explains Dr Frost.
“If the client understands and is on the same page, we progress. If the
client wants something beyond the natural aesthetic, we decline. That’s
why you need a comprehensive initial consultation to work out your
individual plan.”
So, the message is clear – do your homework. Who will you trust to hold
the needle? Will they tell you when enough is enough?
You only have one face, value it.

Sothys Hydrating Youth Cream
As soon as I started blending this cream into
my face and neck, I swear I heard a choir of
angels. This is one smooth velvety operator.
You can use this as a day or night cream.
I applied at night-time to begin with and the
texture was just right. I really felt like it was
replenishing my skin. In the morning my skin
felt soft and hydrated. A hint of wild boletus
mushroom comes through ever so slightly
and is, surprisingly, a lovely fragrance. For a
gal nearing her 40s, I’m keen on preserving
any youthfulness. Thanks Sothys!
There are some products that just make you feel better, and
this new addition to the Weleda range is one of them. The
there are seven other organic plant oils in the mix.
It absorbs easily and its non-greasy finish readies my face
sweet orange and vanilla fragrance.
I can’t fault it – it’s luxurious and ideal for countering winter
I haven’t worn lipstick in five years, so when editor Kate handed
me this lipstick to try, I looked at her rather incredulously. But she
knew something I didn’t – that it was time for me to embrace the
boss-goddess wandering around inside. Turns out she likes Fiery
Ruby – a lot. Now, unfortunately I left the lippie in the car on a
warm day, but this wee survivor gathered itself back together and
is still going strong (with a lip brush). It doesn’t dry out my lips and
that could be because its active natural ingredients include evening
primrose oil. Pass me a lippie please, in every colour.
The simple things
Simple changes can make your diet one that nourishes your body
and health long-term, says naturopath Deanna Copland.
Avoid going to the extremes of diet and restriction and instead choose
to slowly change your eating habits to embrace the foods that nourish
you. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables can improve overall wellbeing
and reduce the risk of a range of preventable chronic diseases, including
some cancers. Up to a third of all cancers are preventable through simple
lifestyle changes, including maintaining a healthy weight, eating a healthy
diet, limiting alcohol and being active. So, here are some simple tips and
tricks that can easily be incorporated into a busy lifestyle.
Style | Wellbeing 59
Skin on
A lot of powerful nutrients are in fruit and vege
skins, so where possible, leave them on. When
buying non-organic produce, you can soak them
in your kitchen sink with water and a good splash
of apple cider vinegar to break down some of the
pesticides on the skin’s surface.
Shop around the edges
It can all be so confusing as to what is good for us and
what isn’t. A way to make this easier is to shop around
the outskirts of the supermarket: fresh fruit and veges,
then on to lean meats, fish, dairy products and eggs.
The occasional exception is items such as
herbal teas, cooking oils, nuts and seeds, which
tend to be on shelves within the aisles.
Tired? Get prepared
Snacks can let people down. We often grab
high-energy foods that are quick and easy when
stressed or tired, rather than actually hungry.
Keep healthy snacks, such as raw nuts and seeds,
nearby with some dark chocolate (in a portioncontrolled
container), vege sticks with hummus
or nut butter, or a piece of fresh fruit. Raspberry
Coconut Truffles (page 60) are a tasty treat to
have occasionally, rather than a daily snack.
Raw & cooked
Raw and cooked veges offer different
nutrients. An example is a tomato. In its
raw form it is a great source of vitamin
C, but when it is cooked the vitamin C
is destroyed; instead, cooked tomatoes
offer lycopene, another antioxidant that
has been shown to help reduce the risk
of prostate cancer. Aim to eat a mix of
raw and cooked veges each day.
Avoid dried fruits as they have
concentrated fruit sugars and are
usually sprayed with sulphites to help
them retain their colour. Sulphites
can exacerbate allergies, asthma and
eczema in some individuals.
Which sugar?
Many sugar-free recipes use sugar
alternatives such as dates, honey and/or
coconut sugar, which are better options
than sugar (however, they still need to be
used in moderation).
Brown rice syrup is also used and is
a good alternative as it is 100 per cent
glucose, which is easily utilised by the whole
body for energy (unlike fructose, another
sugar molecule that is metabolised by the
liver then stored as fat). When recipes call
for a sweetener, this is a better option –
however, it is still a sugar. I would try using
less than the recipes states to reduce your
sweet cravings.
There are some useful books and movies
that can shed more light on food trends and
how certain foods work in our body. Look
to That Sugar Film (2014) and Food Matters
(2008), plus David Gillespie’s book Sweet
Poison: Why Sugar Makes Us Fat (2008).
It might be a less-than-charming comparison, but I liken
myself to a lizard; I thrive in a warmer climate.
Being Southland-based, with only a very small chance of an
island getaway anytime soon, the opportunity to spend five
days in the Bay of Plenty was very much welcome.
I knew I was in for a treat when I had to remove clothing
layers when I landed in Tauranga mid-afternoon.
A mere 6km from the city, I exited the terminal, found
my rental car and began the short trip to my hotel, Trinity
Wharf (51 Dive Crescent), my home-away-from-home for
the next two nights.
Close to town, I walked to the city centre for dinner.
Macau Restaurant (59 The Strand) specialises in mouthwatering
sharing plates. I sampled a few and was impressed.
An early start was in store for me the next day, and I
travelled north to Waihī Beach.
While the journey was not a long one, I wanted to ensure
there was enough time to explore the towns along the way
– and there are some gems.
Coffee was a high priority, so a quick detour from State
Highway 2 to Te Puna Deli (17B Minden Road) fixed my
craving. Fresh and fragrant produce was piled on a centre
table, while baked goods complemented the aroma.
My next stop was for a quick pie in Katikati, where
a planned five-minute break turned into an hour’s
exploration as I was captivated by the obvious pride the
community had for its home.
The ever-present buzz of Bay of Plenty cicadas is the
musical accompaniment for strolling down the muralfilled
streets. The small town’s history is displayed in the
large and numerous pieces of art, as well as in The Arts
Junction (36 Main Road). Here you can find the Carlton
Gallery, the Katikati Visitor Information Centre and
the Junction Theatre – all well worth a visit. Friendly and
knowledgeable, the staff are more than happy to provide
information on the area.
Rolling waves and a long stretch of sandy beach
welcomed me at Waihī. I drove to the northern end of
the township, where I set out on a rewarding walk to
Orokawa Bay.
Spectacular scenery and great fishing opportunities await,
while the 45-minute (one-way) walk takes you through
the scenic reserve’s native bush. The track winds around
the edge of the coast, offering glimpses of an azure Pacific
Ocean. At the end, I kicked off my shoes and rested on the
sandy beach.
ABOVE CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT: Cob Cottage offers a beautiful and comfortable stay, nestled in nature; Demian Dunlop’s Flatwhite café has
a beautiful spot overlooking the beach; The Bay of Plenty is well known for its sandy beaches, such as at Orokawa Bay, near Waihī Beach.

I’d recommend spending some time in this part of the bay.
Beautiful Ōhope is close by and the road around to Ōpōtiki and
further offers some gorgeous sights.
Working up an appetite again, I made my way back to the
car and drove through the village to have lunch at Flatwhite
(21 Shaw Road). A beachfront delight, the restaurant sits
almost on the sand. Keeping with the marine theme, I chose
fish tacos for my meal. Beautiful.
I spoke with the co-owner of the restaurant, who has
ties to the South. Having trained in Queenstown and with
relatives in Winton, Demian Dunlop appreciates southern
living. However, the draw of the bay’s warm climate and
beach living had him take a position as the chef at Flatwhite.
“Waihī Beach is a hidden gem. It’s a beautiful place – we
have a lot to offer.”
I had to agree.
My time there, however, had to come to an end and I
headed back towards Tauranga.
With a slight phobia of massages, I wasn’t initially excited
for my trip to Fernland Spa (250 Cambridge Road,
Bethlehem). My experience, however, proved me a fool. I
am not ‘good’ at relaxation, but after a soak in the private
thermal mineral pool I was more than ready to give it a try.
My half-hour massage began, and I was slipping, slipping,
slipping away.
Evening came, and as I sat down to dinner at Sugo
(19 Wharf Street) I appreciated every luscious mouthful.
I was salivating just looking at the menu: rock melon and
prosciutto, tiramisu, beetroot and ricotta tortellini, with
a wicked drinks list, too. Not too many though, as it was
another early start the next day – a roadie to Whakatāne.
Low sun and a light haze drifting off the sea set a serene
scene for the hour-long drive. However, rough seas were
forecast, and with a previous activity already having been
cancelled the day before, I was lucky it had calmed enough
for my next. And it was one I was very ready for: a tour of
Moutohorā Island (Whale Island).
One of the country’s most restricted pest-free wildlife
sanctuaries, it was a privilege to be boarding a boat with
Moutohorā Island Sanctuary Tours (15 The Strand,
Whakatāne). As such, biosecurity was completed before
boarding. After a bumpy ride over, the sea calmed as we
drew closer to the Department of Conservation and Ngāti
Awa-managed island.
The first highlight was spotting the numerous fur seals that
call Moutohorā Island home. As we bobbed towards our
landing point, birds could be seen and heard among the hum
of cicadas.
Our small group of about 10 or so began a short and slow
walk, stopping occasionally to hear stories of the history and
character of the island as we traversed through native bush.
The well-formed track led north to a vantage point, close
to a historical pā, where we looked out across the ocean.
Retracing our steps, we visited a resident tuatara, which
chilled near its burrow as we waved hello.
The last part of our island journey was to Onepū/Sulphur
Bay. Aptly named, the bay serves as a reminder of the
island’s volcanic nature. Spades were handed out and we
worked to dig ourselves a geothermal pool; others relaxed
with an eagle ray for company in the warm, calm water.
We left the island in no rush, and we farewelled in
Whakatāne with a smile and a wave.
I’d recommend spending some time in this part of the bay.
Beautiful Ōhope is close by and the road around to Ōpōtiki
and further offers some gorgeous sights.
For me, dinner was soon of high priority.
I was to stay in Waitao that evening, so I made my way
back on to State Highway 2 and travelled to Te Puke for a
quick feed.
I navigated the short, twisting drive to Cob Cottage
(662 Te Puke Quarry Road). An impressive place to stay,
the cottage was built by locals wanting to learn the art of
natural building (so they made it out of clay, sand and straw).
Owned and obviously cherished by the Partridge family, the
cottage makes for a beautiful and romantic refuge.
I arrived shortly before dusk and, having settled in, I
paused to admire my surroundings. Magpies chattered and
insects played their evening song, with me soaking it all in
while cuddled up on a couch by a brazier. Sleep came easily.
The last day of my trip had arrived and I still had so much
I wanted to do, to see. Evidently not having had my fill of
natural wonders, my first trip was to Kaiate/Te Rerekawau
Falls. A 10-minute drive from the cottage, the easy walk
weaves down to the falls and back.
Various stops along the way offered drastically different
views: wide and open to Mount Maunganui in the distance;
corridors of native flora; and volumes of rushing water,
pooling, trickling, gushing down. It was all too much for my
senses, and I was hungry again.
So, off I went to Pāpāmoa for breakfast. Coffee and crêpes
at Henry & Ted (5 Golden Sands Drive) went down well
and kept me going while I visited nearby towns. Back on the
road east, I took a turnoff towards Pukehina.
The reason for my visit to the small beach town was to
meet the team behind Lumberjack Brewing (90 Pukehina
Beach Road). Kitted out with a small taproom, the brewery
is open on Friday and Saturday afternoons.

This year, owner Ian O’Malley quit his job to work on
the craft beer brewery full-time. He studied in Dunedin and
played for St Kilda Brass; he now teaches brass one day a
week at the local school.
“We decided to just take the leap.”
This may have been an easy decision, having won the
SOBA Bay of Plenty Brewery of the Year in 2019, and with
support from the local community.
In the process of expanding the business, he invites locals
and vacationers alike to pop in for a brew or two.
With only one road into Pukehina, he told me to
keep driving down and visit the beach. It was certainly
somewhere I could spend some time – a quaint beach
town, still with the rural charm us southerners are used to.
Nearby Maketū is similarly beautiful. Activities around
the area are numerous, such as horse riding, fishing and
kayaking, to name but a few.
Known for its kiwifruit cultivation, Te Puke works as a good
base for those wanting to do orchard tours. For me, food was
once more on my mind. The focus for those who run The
Daily (3 Commerce Lane), however, is the community.
Owned by The Search Party Charitable Trust, all profits
from the café and catering goes back to the Te Puke
community, with the aim of breaking the poverty cycle.
And the food? Superb.
My vacation was coming to an end, but I still had one
more thing to check off my to-do list.
Turning towards Mount Maunganui, I checked into
The Beaumont Apartments (12 Maunganui Road) and
relaxed in the bright lounge for an hour. Then I headed
to the beach, where I donned a wetsuit. I tried to surf...
and failed.
This was not due to a lack of patience, support or
commitment from my instructor, Paddy Maddocks.
The crew at Hibiscus Surf School (Main Beach)
are experienced and, thankfully, kind to beginners
like me.
For those who possess more skill than myself, they
offer advanced lessons as well. My private lesson, which
lasted an hour and a half, completed my holiday and was
the ideal way to spend the remaining time I had in the
sunny Bay of Plenty.
Laura Smith was hosted by Tourism Bay of Plenty.
ABOVE CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT: Lumberjack Brewing owner Ian O’Malley is excited for the future of his Pukehina business;
Fabulous food with a focus on caring for the community is what The Daily in Te Puke does well; Hibiscus Surf School instructor
Paddy Maddocks has spent the past few years in Mount Maunganui.

your well-deserved break. House of Travel are TAANZ bonded agents, which means your money is safe with us, a trusted NZ brand.
While booking online may seem simple enough, if you need to make changes OR deal with last minute cancellations it can become
frustrating and a long-winded process, with hours spent on hold trying to find a real person to talk to. With House of Travel Merivale-
Shirley you are provided with a 24/7 phone number where you will speak to one of the team who will be able to deal with your query
immediately.
