EDITOR
New Zealand is a country built on the strength of family
businesses – and in this issue, we prove this to be so,
twice over.
Lilly Cooper’s foray into property development was
an undeniably bold move for a youngster. Fast-forward a
few decades and daughter Caroline, in her early twenties,
showed signs of that same gumption, joining her mum in
creating Christchurch shopping precinct The Colombo. This
dynamic duo now does everything together, from developing
community-focused retail precincts to walking their dogs every
morning. It seems they are never far away from each other.
Distance isn’t an issue for Tess Lyes and mum Vicki
Bastion. Together they run wood-wick candle business, Nevé,
despite one living in Christchurch and the other pouring the
wax on the West Coast. Nonetheless, business – and their
relationship – is booming.
When generations come together, great things happen. It
takes a village to raise a child, and a diverse mindset to raise
our local businesses to the next level.
