EXTERNAL AFFAIRS with Tim Goom Compass Pools Ambassador Andy Ellis on life in the Big Apple You’ve been living in New York with your family for the last few months- what have you been up to? We are living in New Jersey, across the Hudson River with incredible views of the New York skyline. I’m playing halfback for Rugby United New York. It’s so fulfilling spending my later playing years in the company of great men who were brought up in completely different cultures (from 11 different nations) but with a shared passion- it makes us instant mates. The many contrasts between Christchurch and New York must have presented a few challenges for you when you first arrived? We arrived in New York in February stepping straight out of a beautiful kiwi summer to knee deep snow and the bustle of New York City. The contrast was extreme. We were thrown straight into strict pandemic rules and have worn a mask every single day since we arrived. Our kids had to adapt to a completely foreign school in a very busy New York City and to wearing a mask for the entire school day- which they’ve done without complaint. The view from our apartment is truly amazing! Every night different colours light up the Empire State Building. On Valentine’s Day it was flashing pink in a heartbeat rhythm while on St Patrick’s Day it was bright green. We’re adept at apartment living, having spent six years in an apartment in Japan. We love the amenities and the easy care that a smaller place offers. This inspired the smaller floor plan of our last house in Christchurch while our Compass pool continued the apartment living vibe. With the world still battling the global pandemic, your journey through it has been varied and across a few countries. We were living in Japan in February 2020, just as the pandemic was starting to take hold. We headed home for a short visit but while home, NZ was placed into lockdown and we were unable to return to Japan. This cut short my sixth and final season with the Kobelco Steelers. The abrupt end was tough as we adored our life in Japan but we felt very lucky to be home with our families. Our Compass pool was a lifesaver during lockdown. We swam every day. I used the pool to stay fit and it provided endless hours of entertainment and fun for the kids. This meant when the phone call from Rugby United New York asking if I had another season in me as a 37 year old, I confidently said “bring it on!”. Our first job upon arriving in New York was to build our own gym! It’s easy to get used to the luxuries that are bestowed upon a professional rugby player in this era so to go back to basics and see my team constantly making sacrifices to be able to front up for their team and a game that they love is inspiring. I am humbled to be a part of it. What changes have you seen there since you arrived? New York is due to completely reopen by June. I can’t wait to take the kids to a Broadway show once they return in September! I have been so impressed with the efficiency of the vaccine rollout. There is a definite sense of pandemic fatigue here, people desperately want life to go back to normal. We have been so lucky in New Zealand to live relatively normally but I am also grateful that I’ve experienced the American perspective. It makes me very grateful for modern medicine! What is next? We’ll be home for Summer then return here for another season in 2022. We then plan to travel with the kids before returning to NZ for good. We are in the process of building our next home in Christchurch, complete with a Compass Pool. With my pool keeping me in top shape I might even be able to turn out for the Varsity Vipers!
