Jeff Chapman (BBA79) was
profiled in The Texas Lawbook,
a partner publication of the
Dallas Business Journal. Chapman
is partner and co-chair of
global mergers and acquisitions
at Gibson Dunn law firm
in Dallas, Texas.
Named for the first dean of the college, Chester A.
Phillips, Phillips Hall was home to the College of
Business Administration until 1994. Here is Phillips Hall
under construction on July 25, 1963.
“As a senior, I gave campus tours to
parents of incoming freshmen during
orientation. Part of the shtick during
the tour was to point out buildings that
‘looked like something’ related to their
purpose. We mentioned that Phillips
Hall resembled a computer punch card
(if you’re too young, look it up).”

Charles Doran (BBA79)
retired after more than 40
years at Reynolds American.
Kerry Killinger (BBA70/
MBA71) and his wife Linda
published Nothing Is Too Big
to Fail: How the Last Financial
Crisis Informs Today with
Simon and Schuster in March
2021. Killinger is the former
chairman, president, and CEO
of Washington Mutual Bank.
Mark J. Smith (BBA76)’s
wealth management firm, M.J.
Smith and Associates, was
acquired by Mercer Global
Advisors in Denver, Colo. M.J.
Smith, which was founded in
1983, serves approximately
490 households with assets
under management of $910
million. Smith will be joining
Mercer Advisors along with
his 11 staff members.
Beth TenPas (BBA78) retired
after more than 30 years as
financial services director at
UCLA Health.
R. Michael Appleby (BBA67)
retired in 2005 after 36 years
as a sales representative for
V. Mueller in Arizona. In his
retirement, Appleby and his
wife live in Parker, Colo., to
be near their grandchildren.
Appleby was a docent at the
Denver Zoo for seven years
and later joined the American
Legion’s honor guard and is
their social media/public relations
chairman. He also sits
on the Parker Special Licensing
Authority (liquor licensing
authority). He attended the
Parker Police Citizens Academy
and is now a volunteer
in the Professional Standards
Department. He reports he is
still a loyal Hawkeye!
John C. Lisle (BBA64)
has been elected to the board
of directors of Sukup Manufacturing
in Sheffield, Iowa, a
manufacturer of grain bins and
accessories.
Henry B. Tippie (BSC49),
along with his wife, Patricia
Bush Tippie, was given the
2021 Philanthropy Award from
the Council of Independent
Colleges.
