Something about slapping a fellow sheriff on the behind, if I recall correctly. At the time Hank told me he was grieving his dismissal, but I understand he eventually moved on to a night watchman’s job at the N.S. Power generating station in Trenton. Ray refused to confirm or deny the scuttlebutt when I reached him at work the other day. You’ll recall former sheriff Doug was the target of a Justice Dept. investigation stemming from complaints lodged against him by current and former employees in 2008 (Frank 536). Although the blurb gives the names of the few dozen individuals whose stuff would be sold — including cab driver and would-be real estate developer Ali Roushani — there were no details on what sort of items would be up for grabs. The last name appearing on the list is the Dept. of Community Services. “It’s not actually our property,” explains government spokesthingy Lucas Wide. He says the department agreed to pay a months’ storage fees on behalf of a client who was going through a “period of transition.” It would appear the client ran out of time. Under the Act, the owner of a storage facility has the right to confiscate a customer’s items and sell them at public auction if they fall too far behind in their rent. In a related story, I see some items belonging to beloved local sports personality Alex J. Walling were also advertised for sale, this time in an auction at the U-Haul Self Storage place in Burnside on March 20. I unfortunately wasn’t able to catch up with the man himself before Frankland Press Time, so I’m left to speculate what goodies ol’ Alex J. might have left to rot. Some old snow tires, maybe? A few dozen of those blasted red paper boxes left over from his days as a student newspaper peddler? The possibilities, if you care enough to speculate, are endless.
