IT SEEMS DOUG MACKEEN, FORMERLY THE
HEAD SHERIFF AT THE PICTOU JUSTICE CENTRE,
IS NOT SO EASILY REPLACED.
Five months after his departure last fall, the
N.S. Justice Department has yet to find a permanent
successor.
I understand Jimmy Snow, the head sheriff in
Port Hawkesbury and Antigonish, is serving
as the interim boss in Pictou County until a
permanent replacement can be found. I hear
Justice officials thought they had found their
man in Ray Lindsay, a sheriff’s deputy in Truro,
I UNDERSTAND FORMER PICTOU COUNTY WARDEN
HANK DUNNEWOLD LIVED A MERE SIX WEEKS AFTER
BEING DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER, WHICH HAD IN-
VADED HIS KIDNEYS, STOMACH AND LUNGS. HE DIED
ON MARCH 17 AT THE AGE OF 61.
Despite spending 18 years around the municipal
council table, the gregarious chap never came to
my attention in any substantial way until after he
was dismissed from the Pictou County Sheriff’s
Service in 2008 for one reason or another. Something
about slapping a fellow sheriff on the behind,
if I recall correctly. At the time Hank told me he was
grieving his dismissal, but I understand he eventually
moved on to a night watchman’s job at the N.S.
Power generating station in Trenton.
Sincerest Frankland condolences.
THERE’S NOT A NEW SHERIFF IN TOWN
but he apparently wasn’t interested in the gig.
Ray refused to confirm or deny the scuttlebutt
when I reached him at work the other day.
You’ll recall former sheriff Doug was the target of
a Justice Dept. investigation stemming from complaints
lodged against him by current and former
employees in 2008 (Frank 536). His final day at
work was October 16 of last year.
A message left with the Justice Dept. wasn’t returned
at Frankland Press Time.
N.S. Property Online records indicate
that Angela signed over their
Sandy Place, Valley, Colchester
County matrimonial home (2010 assessment:
$259,900) to Dave, 39ish,
on February 23. Two days later,
Angela closed the deal on a Coburg
Crescent abode ($210,000) in town,
handy to the new elementary school.
I believe the estranged couple’s
marriage produced a pair of pre-teen
children.
A graduate of J.L. Ilsley High
School in Spryfield, Dave studied
sociology and criminology at St.
Mary’s before attending the Atlantic
Police Academy in Charlottetown.
A 16-year veteran cop, he was promoted
to deputy chief in 2005 and
then onto chief after Ken MacLean’s
retirement in 2008.
A detailed message left for Dave at
work was not returned before
Frankland presstime.
