Calendar Heatmap
A heatmap is used to blend a calendar with the number of activities performed
(Fig. 6.6). The number of activities per day is displayed such that darker shades
represent more activities performed. The calendar shows the course’s activities for
the full year.
Activity Over Weekdays (Boxplot)
The calendar view in Fig. 6.6 can present the whole year or a single day. The activity
over weekdays in a boxplot provides detailed information about students’ activities.
Figure 6.7 displays each weekday as a box plot containing information on the
number of activities on that day. Unlike the calendar view, the boxplot shows the
distribution of activities on specific weekdays.
Activity Flow
The activity flow analysis shows the coherences and associations between certain
learning objects as a chord diagram (Fig. 6.8). The colorful diagram also shows
where most students navigate within the learning materials. The top left of the chord
diagram has a legend with incoming, outgoing, and both directions. Green incoming
connections and nodes indicate that the selected object was visited from a green node
(i.e., shows what was the previous activity of the student), whereas students navigate
