Intergenerational Planning

– These words mean many

things to many people, and this

is probably the most diverse

area of planning where I am

regularly asked to assist. The

baby boomers have undoubtedly

made asset wealth on property

and some may have inherited or generated wealth.

However, the questions they ask are “Will we run out of

money“ – “Can we pass our wealth to our offspring”.

Initially, simple planning such as Wills* and Lasting

Powers of Attorney, of which there are two – Health

& Welfare and Property and Financial affairs is the

starting point. I work with fellow professionals where

necessary to create these structures.

Every person has circumstances which are different,

which is why it is critical a full discussion takes

place. Following that start point, it is a matter of

understanding what you are trying to achieve with

all that you have, and then create a bespoke plan

that is flexible to meet any changing circumstances

i.e. cover home fees whilst protecting the estate,

having access to capital and protecting the estate.

Inheritance tax you choose to pay if you don’t use all

of the opportunities to mitigate it. Allowances such

as nil rate bands, Resident Nil rate Bands and annual

exemptions which are sufficient for most people to

achieve their outcomes.

Where more complex situations arise, I will look

to include any number of the following: PETS over

7 years and structures that are effective after 2

years, Business relief, Trusts, Gifting, Loan Trusts,

Discounted Gift Trusts, Charitable donations, Rysaffe

structures, Protection, Tenants in Common, Pensions

and annual exemptions. Increasingly we see changes

to Gifts with reservation and Deprivation of assets

legislation, but with careful planning and flexible

arrangements you can have your cake and eat it

ensuring that taxation is not the largest inheritor of

your estate, but your family are.

So you know what to do – Just ASK!

Parliament has been in recess and It’s been

wonderful to meet with local businesses,

charities and groups recently to hear

about what they’ve been doing during

the pandemic and how they’re planning

to get back to normal.

Right now we’re still on track to end restrictions

in June, but that will rely on us all doing our

part – the single biggest thing you can do is get

your vaccination when you are eligible. I had my

first jab in mid-May and I couldn’t have been more

impressed by the efficiency and the sheer scale of

the scheme.

Friends of

Queens Park

The ‘Friends’ group has welcomed some new

members this month. We would love to have

you join us, look out for the date and time of

our next meeting, monthly in the park lodge.

We have seen the arrival of a new tree carving in the

children’s playground, a dragon. We held a competition for a

child to name the new dragon collecting lots of suggestions

and having a judge choose the best name. The dragons

name will then be made into a plaque and placed on the

dragon, look for the dragon’s name next time you visit.

The tree that was used was a large oak and has been

replaced by three new oak trees in the park.

We are now putting together a list of events to take place

on the outside theatre throughout the summer months.

If you would like to hold an event please register with the

council and fill in the appropriate forms.

We continue to meet and greet on Sundays outside of the

park lodge, come along and pick up your healthy duck food.

The park has also been entered for this years RHS in Bloom

competition and has been awarded the highest mark Gold

several times so we look forward to achieving this again

this year.

RESCHEDULED

The Tour de Manc is the biggest not for profit charity cycle ride in the UK and

supports hundreds of Greater Manchester charities and good causes. But, like so

many things the coronavirus crisis meant that the event had to be cancelled in

2020 and sadly postponed again in May 2021.

But the folks behind this tour have been hard at work behind the scenes, throughout

the lockdown. Now, with restrictions easing we have had the incredible news that

the Tour de Manc 2021 will be going ahead on Sunday 5th September, with a special

safety plan, to help ensure that riders, supporters and spectators are safe.

The route starts in Middleton before passing though 10 boroughs in Greater

Manchester. People wanting to see all the action can come along to Bowlee for the

start / finish, or to Norden which will once again be hosting the half-way pit stop in

this epic 100 mile challenge.

Councillor Peter Winkler, who coordinates the local leg of the ride said: “It’s always

a superb day, and the riders really appreciate a good cheer. We would welcome

anyone to join us in a socially safe manner to support the riders who are raising

thousands of pounds for various Greater Manchester charities and good causes.”

We are looking for volunteers to help man the Norden pitstop, if you

would like to get involved by helping out on the event day please

contact Peter on 07583 674 503. Lunch will be provided, and

volunteers will receive a special 2021 Tour de Manc Volunteers t-shirt.

Awarded the Prestigious Queens

Award for Voluntary Service

Despite the restrictions on us all this past year

and the unusual circumstances, The Friends of

Hopwood Park have continued to stay positive

and active to make the best of the situation to

assist our community.

Our dedicated volunteers have worked hard to maintain

our flower beds and planters on Hopwood Park to create a

pleasant, colourful environment for the community to enjoy.

The importance of taking care of our

local green spaces has really been

appreciated recently and we have been

fortunate to have Hopwood Park on

our doorstep. We also adapted the food

service from The Tree House Café to

provide the community with a delivery

and take-away facility for food and drink,

for which many have been grateful for.

2021 marks 10 years since The Friends

of Hopwood Park formed and as we

celebrate our 10th Anniversary, we are

delighted to hear that we have received

the prestigious Queen’s Award for

Voluntary Service (QAVS).

This is the highest award given to UK

volunteer groups and is equivalent to

the MBE. It is awarded to recognise the

exceptional work of a voluntary group

within a community.

We are extremely proud to receive this

award. I am delighted that our hard work

has been recognised and I would like to

sincerely thank each and every volunteer

who has been involved in our journey over the last 10 years to make this

outstanding achievement possible.

We have also been awarded an

additional special designation for

providing impactful support to our

community during the Covid-19

pandemic in 2020 and six of our

volunteers will receive a special award

to recognise their efforts.

During 2020-21 we have been working

behind the scenes to make positive

plans for the future, which includes an

outside seating area at The Tree House

Cafe. Work to complete this project

began in the middle of June and we very much look forward to welcoming

our customers to this new addition to the popular community café at

Hopwood Park. This project is being funded by profits from The Tree House

Café; funds raised from our Charity events and a kind donation from two of

our regular customers Mr & Mrs Jack Wilson.

Also by means of profits from The Tree House Café and the support of our

customers, we have also been able to fund a defibrillator, which will be

situated in a secure cabinet outside the Café, and will be accessible to the

public at all times.

We are also grateful to several businesses and

organisations for their support in recent months.

Sainsbury’s Supermarket, Heaton Park have

generously offered us their customer food donation

partnership, from which we have been able to

provide food packages to many struggling families

and individuals to give them a helping hand during

these difficult times.

We also greatly appreciated the donation of £125

as the top nominee from the Community Share

Fund of the Facebook page - Mel’s Community

Competitions, a big thank you to Melanie Clark for

organising this.

We now look forward to the months ahead to share

the positive things happening on Hopwood Park

with our customers and park visitors.
