A MESSAGE FROM THE GWSA 

BOARD 

Over fifty members attended the 34 th Annual General Meeting on 

June 8. It was fascinating to hear about the impressive work of the 

GWSA Community Support Services which helped so many 

vulnerable seniors through a challenging year. Everyone was 

informed of our financial situation which emerged on solid footing, 

even with memberships on pause, thanks to all the support we 

receive. We are especially appreciative of the ongoing, generous 

support the GWSA receives from the City of Guelph and its staff. 

At the AGM, the Board thanked Athar Khan for his years of service, 

and the members elected one new director, Teresa McKeeman. At 

the Board’s first meeting following the AGM, Becky Fiedler moved 

to the role of Past-President, and Brian Smith was elected President. 

Roger Stevens remains Treasurer, Tonie MacInnis Secretary, and 

Adam Rutherford continues to represent the City of Guelph. Pat 

Gage joins the Executive Committee. The remaining directors 

include Ken Fugler, Wenda King, Ross Knechtel, Teresa 

McKeeman, and Mike Woof. Some vacancies remain on the Board 

of Directors and its committees for those who want to join this 

dynamic group. Contact the volunteer co-ordinator to learn more. 

Much is happening to prepare for the reopening of in-person 

activities. The City has been completing some renovations, and 

colourful window decals along the hall provide a bright, refreshing 

look. It is encouraging to see new paint and lighting, room 

improvements, and interesting changes unfolding for the Evergreen 

Kitchen. A New Horizons for Seniors Grant funded the new 

livestreaming video-recording studio which is almost ready for action 

to facilitate our growing virtual activities. There really is a lot to get 

excited about! 

Members are concerned about how they can ‘return-to-play’ safely. 

That’s why the Board has approved policies which will require all 

participants of in-person activities to provide Proof of COVID-19 

Vaccination, and to complete the COVID-19 Liability Waiver. You 

may encounter COVID-19 Screening for certain activities as is 

needed to fill a bus for the planned trip to Gravenhurst. The GWSA 

will continue to offer virtual activities to allow more participants than 

room capacity limits will allow; to accommodate members who do 

not yet wish to gather in person; and to those who cannot, or choose 

not to, receive COVID-19 vaccinations.

The Watercolour Painters 

Club is active, on Zoom. 

Watercolour Painters Club is using 

Zoom to encourage painters to submit 

their paintings and have discussion of 

techniques. They meet from 1 pm to 3 

pm on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Wednesdays 

of each month. If you are interested in 

seeing what GWSA painters are doing

GWSA Funding Announcement 

On Monday, May 17, Lloyd Longfield announced that nine seniors organizations in Guelph 

received funding from the New Horizons for Seniors Program. Local awards totaled 

$176,657 and that included $25,000 for the Guelph Wellington Seniors Association’s project 

designed to Deliver Seniors Activities Virtually. 

The GWSA project has two parts: 

1) to provide equipment to support converting existing activities to virtual format and 

2) to build on a successful, Zoom-based, “pilot” ukulele project. 

Convert Activities to Virtual 

Many of our members have Internet access and can participate in activities via Zoom. Few 

have capability for on-screen demonstrations. We are using part of our funding to set up a 

low-cost studio for livestreaming or recording demonstrations for our activity groups. This 

will enable: 

Close-up and overhead demonstrations for our arts/crafts groups (quilting, watercolours, 

bunka, and photography);

Virtual rehearsals or instruction for choir, ukulele group as well as physical activities 

such as exercise classes and line dancing; 

Other programs suggested by our community and committees. 

Although our seniors will be the primary users of the studio, we also received funding for a 

technician to set up equipment; train users, and offer technical support. Ready availability of 

technical support is important for seniors to become proficient, independent users of the 

system. 

Build on a Successful Pilot Project of 

Ukulele Instruction 

The Silvertones choir has been a Guelph 

cultural entity for 40 years. Because aging 

impacts the vocal cords, the Silvertones 

Director and leadership team initiated a 

successful pilot program for ukulele (The 

Silver Strummers) in January 2020 and moved 

to Zoom in mid-March. The Zoom-based 

lessons have offered a new creative outlet for 

our musically-inclined seniors. 

Many seniors are financially-challenged and 

cannot afford to participate in the on-line ukulele lessons. New Horizons funds will be used 

to purchase 10 concert ukuleles, five tenor ukuleles, cases, music, music folders, and music 

stands for those who cannot afford these essential items on their own.

information about how to participate in these projects as we get them under way. 

BOOK CLUB 1 

Our group normally meets in the Boardroom on the last Friday of each month from 1:00 to 

2:30 p.m. 

For July, our selection is “The Family Upstairs” by Lisa Jewell. In August, we will be 

reading “A Giver of Stars” by Jojo Moyes. 

Because the Evergreen Centre is not open at present, we meet at the end of the month on 

Zoom or will meet outdoors.

We miss you in person! Volunteering and the 

world around us has changed in many ways 

over the last year and a half. 

Many volunteers have taken on a new role 

“virtual volunteering” in the same capacity as 

in person, but moving in-person interaction to 

online through technology. Thank you for 

continuing to pursue your passion as a 

volunteer and doing your best to keep everyone 

engaged, including yourself. It’s a new way to 

volunteer and hopefully we can all get back to 

in-person, face-to-face interactions soon. Keep 

safe and healthy and looking forward to seeing 

you all again. Thank you for keeping up the 

great work you all do!

GWSA BOARD OF DIRECTORS 

The Board is looking to recruit up to four (4) 

new members. Experience in law, fundraising 

and HR are an asset. The Board meets on the 

third Wednesday of each month at 9:30 am 

virtually (min of 8 meetings per year). Being 

GOVERNANCE COMMITTEE 

The GWSA is looking for up to three 

additional members. The Governance 

Committee assists the Board of Directors with 

the development and review of bylaws, 

policies, and procedures for the Association. 

Morning meetings during a few months of the 

year. 

Experience in governance with a not-forprofit 

organization 

 

 

Knowledge of legislative requirements 

A keen interest in document research, 

development, and review would be helpful. 

SECRETARY 

The Governance Committee is looking for 

someone with a laptop and who is interested in 

taking minutes at the meeting and updating any 

documents as needed. 

MEMBERSHIP & MARKETING 

Three more committee members needed to join 

the team. Meet on the 2 nd Tuesday of each 

month at 9:30 am. The committee reports to 

the Board for all membership and marketing 

initiatives, focusing on the maximum interest 

of members and advancement of the Board’s 




Strategic Plan. The Committee provides 

content and messaging advice to the webmaster 

for the website and social media accounts and 

prepares monthly GWSA Email Updates. 

Marketing and recruitment experience would 

definitely be assets, but are not required. 

Monitors membership satisfaction 

Develops plans to improve member

Advise the Board of Directors and provide 

technical leadership in support of the Strategic

Production support: we need a group of 

technically savvy and interested members to 

prioritize a list of needed projects for planning 

and implementation. 

Experience in: electrician, sound tech, 

lighting technician, carpentry or design would 

be useful, and possibly computer-aided design 

skills. 

IT (Information Technology): 

Make hardware and software 

recommendations to address employee and 

volunteer needs, including the Board, 

Finance Committee, and members. 

Oversee a small wireless network. 

Provide guidance regarding the technical 

aspects of the website and membership

Establish a modest A/V recording/live 

streaming studio 

Interest and background experience in IT, 

including network management and video 

production would be assets. 

VARIETY SHOW COMMITTEE 

The Committee is looking for enthusiastic, 

dedicated individuals who like to work as a 

team and have an interest in theatre to lead in 

the following areas for this year’s virtual show: 

Producer: Produce and Direct the Variety 

show. Locate and secure acts, overall 

organization of the show. 

Retirement Homes Co-ordinator: Coordinate 

with the retirement homes for ticket 

sales. 

Stage Manager: 

Attends pre-show committee meetings 

Co-ordinates with Producer on programme. 

Makes show cue sheet for acts, their 

requirements and technical directions 

Works with Lighting and Sound personnel 

for the show 

Responsible for getting stage crew 

Runs the show using cue sheet schedule. 

Makes sure cast caller has acts ready to go 

on stage ahead of time. 

Secretary: The Secretary assists with 

preparing the agenda for the meeting and 

taking notes and distributing to all committee 

members in a timely fashion 

Hospitality and House: Make sure 

everything is ready for the day of the Variety 

Show and organize the event to run smoothly.

Register by telephone: Wednesday, August 4, 2021, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., by contacting 

Customer Service at the Evergreen Seniors Centre at 519-823-1291. MasterCard, Visa, Amex 

or Visa Debit can be accepted for online or telephone booking. There will not be assigned 

seating on this trip. Seating will be available on a first come first serve basis. 

Accessibility 

(1) Please inquire about accessible seating prior to booking your ticket. As with all buses, 

accessible seating is limited. You can help us ensure that we use this seating as efficiently as 

possible by providing information about your assistive device. Please note: The coach will be 

sanitized and sold at full capacity. Masks will be required for all participants. 

 

 

 

 

Travellers who will be using a powered wheelchair on trips are advised to note this when 

registering. While our trips are accessible, seating for a powered wheelchair on the bus is 

limited and will be spoken for on a first come first serve basis. We cannot accommodate 

scooters on the buses. 

Travellers who can transfer to a bus seat may have their collapsible, manual wheelchair or 

walker stored in the cargo area of the bus if required. 

Lift Limit: 500 lbs maximum weight (wheelchair and person combined) 

Lift Width: 32 inches 

(2) Travellers with a disability, who require assistance during the trip, must be accompanied 

by a person who is fully capable of rendering such assistance (this person must be an adult for

Wednesday, September 8, 2021 – A Day in Gravenhurst 

Total Cost: Members $56.00 (NON-REFUNDABLE**) Code: 00020270 

Join us as we spend a relaxing day in Gravenhurst. We will start our visit by dropping off at the 

Muskoka Wharf. There you will be able to have lunch or an ice cream at one of the many 

restaurants (not included), visit the Farmer’s Market, walk the boardwalk, or possibly book a 

one-hour cruise (not included). 

In the afternoon, we will venture downtown where there are many shops to explore or have a 

coffee at one of the many restaurants. A booklet with maps and points of interest will be 

provided. Driver gratuity is included in the cost. Please note: This trip requires walking 

throughout the day. 

Leave: Evergreen Parking Lot: 8:00 a.m. Carousel: 8:10 a.m. Return: 6:30 p.m. 

Note: You must arrive by 7:45 a.m. with completed COVID-19 Screening and Contact List.

receive a refund if you are denied bus entrance due to a positive COVID-19 screening and/or

It takes time to put these trips together and we need YOUR commitment to make these

The Travel Committee must give the number of bookings by August 19, 2021, and if there 

are not enough reservations AT THAT TIME, the trip will be cancelled!

Please do not park your vehicles in the Evergreen parking lot while you are on a day trip. 

Vehicles must be left at the Carousel parking area in Riverside Park where you will board the 

bus. This allows for other members to have a place to park when they come throughout the day.

Each month, approximately mid-month, the Membership 

and Marketing Committee at the 

GWSA sends out the GWSA Email Update. It 

highlights a few of the exciting things happening at 

the GWSA, important communications from the 

Board, and upcoming programs by CSS 

(Community Support Services). 

You can subscribe to receive the GWSA Email 

Update by completing the steps below: 

1. To begin, please send an email to: 

subscribe@gwsa-guelph.ca . You can enter 

Subscribe in the Subject line, or just skip that 

part, it will work either way. In just a few 

minutes, you will receive a message with a link. 

2. Click on the link you received, fill in the appropriate 

fields, and click “Subscribe to List”. 

3. To ensure you really want to receive GWSA 

Email Updates – and to make sure all emails are 

error-free – we’ll send a message asking you to 

confirm. 

4. Once you respond to the confirmation message,
