Syke Walk & Talk Group

BROWN WARDLE CIRCULAR

This month our walk is about 6 miles

and takes us around Brown Wardle Hill

looking at some of the local history

then look out for Alpacas near Lobden

Golf Club on the way back.

Setting off from Syke chapel take the road

northward and follow the tarmac over a cattle

grid then uphill with 2 reservoirs on your left

and Lousy Hillock on your right. When the

tarmac ends pause to get your breath and look

backwards – see if you can spot Jodrell Bank

on the horizon!

Passing through the gap bear slightly left

along a well-defined farm track – you’ll soon

see an old water channel on your right – follow

this around the back of the hill keeping it to

your right. This water channel and another

along the front of Brown Wardle were built to

feed water into the two reservoirs we passed

at the start of the walk.

Continue straight on keeping left when the

road forks to pass the old reservoir wall on

your left – at the end of the wall go straight

on towards Brown Wardle in the distance.

Continue on the unmade road for about half

a mile. When the tarmac starts again ignore

it and fork right passing over a farm track

and then through a gap in what looks like an

embankment – this as an old ‘tramway’ which

we’ll meet again later.

As you walk you can look down on Whitworth

and across to Cowm reservoir and the nearby

stone quarry that is still working. Continue

round the hill you’ll see an old building up to

your right – take the path that leads to it. This

is the remains of the target bunker for an

old firing range – you can see a second one

lower and to your right. There have been firing

ranges in this area since the 1800’s but these

2 were last used in WW2. If you look carefully,

especially after heavy rains, you can still find

old bullets that had been embedded in the

ground.

Continue on the other side of the gap towards

the golf club then bear left across the road

and up the track to the left of the club. Follow

the signs for ‘PBW’ keeping the golf course on

your left – there is often an Alpaca or two in

the field to your right.

Continue around the hill crossing the path

to the top now sadly scarred by motor bikes

and then head downhill. You get great views

of Watergrove and Hollingworth lake in the

distance. You’ll find another water channel as

the path goes down between a wall and the

steep hill to your right. It can get a bit muddy

but after a few minutes you arrive at a flat area

with shale heaps behind, a gate to the left and

a very level track to your right (the modern

‘PBW’ track runs alongside it)). You are at

Cartridge Nook colliery and the track is the

start of the ’tramway’ mentioned earlier.

Tramways were narrow gauge rail tracks used

to transport coal or stone – sometimes using

engines but often horses. Follow the tramway

back to the ‘gap’ we went through earlier.`

Carry on past a couple of farms on your

right – at the top of the hill there is another

opportunity for Jodrell Bank spotting! Go

downhill past a house on your left – at the

bottom turn left on the track. You soon pass

a couple of houses and a tarmac road to the

right – bear left up a stony track and continue

to the corner of the reservoir you passed near

the start. Turn right and follow the road back

to the chapel.

We walk on Friday’s starting at 10am. Please arrive at 9.45am for registration. The meeting point is

outside Syke Chapel OL12 9TF.

Our walks utilise public footpaths and roads around Syke. We walk all year round and in all weathers.

It is important to come properly equipped with boots and suitable clothing.

Covid-19: Currently restrictions are being relaxed but we are for the present asking walkers to maintain

2 metres between walkers and dividing large groups into smaller groups of 6 wherever possible.

WORLD WAR II BOMBS DROP ON ROCHDALE

Ferocious German bombing of

the United Kingdom took place by

day in 1940 but increasingly by

night from October of that year.

London took a great deal of the

bombing but port cities such

as Liverpool, Bristol, Cardiff,

Southampton, Belfast, and Glasgow

were also attacked. One objective of

German raids was to try to negatively

influence the morale of the people, but

this did not happen and only served to

galvanise the population. A further and

more practical objective was to cripple

the British armaments industry but one

effect of the raids was to disperse the

armament centres, particularly aircraft

factories from the main towns and cities

to smaller, less obvious ones. However,

heavy industry remained a target and

that included the Midlands and the

North of England.

In the summer of 1940 Manchester

was particularly badly hit. The Palace

Theatre, Manchester Cathedral, the

Royal Exchange and the Free Trade Hall

all experienced damage and just before

Christmas. 684 people were killed over

a two night period in which 272 tons

of high explosives were dropped along

with 2000 incendiary bombs. It became

known as the Christmas Blitz.

Oxford Road and Deansgate were

blocked by debris and unexploded

bombs and 8000 homes were destroyed.

Salford and Stretford also sustained

casualties and fatalities and hundreds

of properties were lost in the raids.

Middleton, where the Avro factory built

the Lancaster bomber was hit, evidently

without casualties and only putting the

canteen out of commission!

Although the glow of fires in

Manchester could be seen from the

hills around Rochdale, the town itself

escaped the worst of the bombing.

This was perhaps due to a failure of

military intelligence on the part of the

Germans as plenty of munitions were

being manufactured in Rochdale at

the time. Bombs (especially mortar

bombs) and shells for example, were

being filled at a factory in Healey Dell

with chemists and engineers working

there throughout the war. Eunice Hutt

shtml) records that they worked in a big

shed on an assembly line, the workers

‘sitting on either side of a long table

and each did a bit of everything towards

making the bombs. We changed places

every shift so that the job didn’t become

too monotonous. The explosives were

put in at the very end.

fortunately nobody was injured.’

Pillboxes still stand in Healey Dell

ready, if needed, to repulse any attacks

that might have followed an invasion.

The fact that they were not needed was

testament to the war effort.

There are many stories from World War

II some of which might explain, if true,

why Rochdale was bombed so lightly

given that it was on the flight path to

and from Liverpool. The story goes that

Adolf Hitler admired Rochdale Town

Hall and its stained-glass windows

so much that he gave orders not to

have the town bombed, intending to

dismantle the building at some point

and take it back to Germany. Whether

this is true or not will never be known

but the only bombs to fall on the town

were four in total although there are

records of a doodle-bug passing over

the town and coming to earth on an

estate in Oldham.

The most clearly recorded bombing

in the town was on the night of the

9th January 1941 when bombs fell

on the Sudden area. The Rochdale

Observer reported that ‘The blast from

two high explosive bombs dropped on

the town early today, wrecked shops

and offices and shattered windows of

property - including a school - over a

considerable stretch of roadway and

adjoining streets. There was, however,

only one fatal casualty, a Mrs Rossiter.’

Six other people were injured in the raid

and houses in the area around what is

now Brimrod County Primary School

suffered broken windows. The water

mains were blown from the ground and

Finsbury Street and Holborn Street,

some reports suggest, were covered in

broken glass which the residents set to

and swept up!

Other bombs dropped around the

town were at Bellfield in August 1940,

on Norden in October 1942 and near

a row of houses at Red Lumb. There

have always been stories that a bomb

dropped near Firgrove and that it went

straight into the canal although how

authentic these stories are is unknown.

Compared to many towns in the north

of England Rochdale got off lightly.

Lifesavers

One of the opening games of the Euros

2020 produced more drama than the

actual football being played.

The Denmark Captain, 29 year old Christian

Eriksen suddenly collapsed on the pitch and

suffered a potentially fatal cardiac arrest,

fortunately one of the players had had first

aid training and cleared the Danish Captain’s

airway. The two club doctors made their way

into the pitch with a defibrillator and literally brought Christian back

to life with this simple but highly effective machine.

The incident was reported to the millions watching the game and

this has highlighted the need for more of these machines to be

made more available in Towns, Cities and Villages throughout the

Country. And now after several recent requests from residents we

have started the process of bringing one or more of these medical

devices to Syke and Shawclough.

Now a popular idea for housing a public defibrillator is to make

use of the iconic red telephone box or the K6 as it was technically

referred to when first introduced, in 1926, by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott

who also designed Battersby Power Station.

So with the assistance of my fellow Ward Councillors and the

Healey Ward forum I’m hoping to progress this worthwhile project

and acquire a refurbished K6 and site it in its original location in

Shawclough, bringing life back to the heart of the Village.

Christian, the Danish footballer has made a full recovery

and we made it to the Final, the rest, of course is history.
