London’s Rhythm & Rib Fest: Food, music, beer

By Kristy Zurbrick

Madison Editor

Despite a name change, the event formerly

known as London’s Rib & Jazz Fest

still has plenty of jazz. The difference now

that it’s called the Rhythm & Rib Fest?

Other music genres are part of the lineup,

too.

“We still wanted to stay heavy on the

kind of blues and jazz we’ve had in the past,

but we wanted to bring in some rock and

country and pop just to appeal to all audiences,”

said Patrick Closser, London’s

mayor and one of the event’s organizers.

The Rhythm & Rib Fest will take place

Aug. 6-7, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. each day, in downtown

London. Live music and lip-smacking

ribs are the focal points. This year’s rib

burners are Wilson’s Family BBQ, Off the

Bone BBQ, Fine Smoke, Big Pappy’s, and

Rudy’s Smokehouse. Several other food vendors

will be on site selling fair-style goodies

and ice cream. A beer tent is planned.

The festival also includes a cornhole

tournament, 5K, car show, dunk tank, children’s

activities, and local arts and crafts

vendors.

The event was not held last year due to

the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are excited that we’re back. We’re

excited to be able to bring people out and

have them visit the downtown stores, eat

some good food, and listen to great music,

and just have a sense of community back,”

Closser said.

The music schedule is as follows:

Radio Tramps will close out the festival on

Saturday night.

Mojo Theory headlines Friday’s live music lineup at London’s Rhythm & Rib Fest.

Friday, Aug. 6

12-1:30 p.m.—London’s own Matt Rees

will open the festival. A singer and guitarist,

he has played more than 1,200 lives shows

and written nearly 100 songs. He plays

everything from Matchbox 20, Train, and

Radiohead to The Beatles,

Elton John, and

Roy Orbison.

2-3:30 p.m.—Counterpoint,

an acoustic

duo, performs songs

from the 1960s and

‘70s with a strong emphasis

on vocal harmony.

Think Jimmy Buffet, The Eagles, The

Everly Brothers, and Neil Diamond.

4-5:30 p.m.—The Linda Dachtyl Quartet,

featuring the band’s namesake plus Chip

Willis, Don Hales, and Cary Dachtyl, are

longtime Rhythm & Rib Fest participants.

They combine, organ, saxophone and soulful

vocals to turn out all sorts of blues and jazz.

6-7:30 p.m.—Deuce n’ a Quarter returns

to the festival lineup. The joyful five-piece

rhythm and blues act is a two-time winner

of the Columbus Blues Challenge, two-time

recipient of the Ohio Music Award for Best

Blues CD, and a two-time quarter-finalist of

the International Blues Challenge. The

group’s forte is original music.

8-9:30 p.m.—Mojo

Theory will close out

Friday night with originals,

including slowburn

ballads, rock,

boogie woogie piano,

soul and blues numbers.

The band merges

blues traditions with

21st century sensibilities. They have earned

finalist and semi-finalist accolades at the International

Blues Challenge.

Saturday, Aug. 7

12-1:30 p.m.—Playing the likes of Stevie

Wonder, Hall & Oates, and Prince, the

Funk Buzzards is a quartet that brings an

edge to familiar songs and performs new

arrangements of more modern material.

They deliver it all with precision, grace, and,

of course, funk.

2-3:30 p.m.—InnerVision is a festival favorite

featuring Genene Blackwell on keyboards

and vocals and Sam Shepherd on

vocals, harmonic, trombone, and guitar. The

duo dishes up soul, blues, jazz, hymns,

gospel, patriotic tunes, oldies, standards

and originals. They have been performing

together since 2009 when they were students

at the Ohio State School for the Blind.

4-5:30 p.m.—Based in Columbus, Old

School Union stays true to its name, bringing

to the stage classic rock from artists like

Joe Cocker, Eric Clapton, and Earth, Wind

& Fire. The group has played the national

circuit for a very long time. Two years ago,

their lead singer was named best jazz and

blues singer in Columbus.

6-7:30 p.m.—Grab your cowboy boots, Dan

Wallace of Marysville will be giving the

Rhythm & Rib Fest a little country flavor.

8-9:30 p.m.—Finishing out the weekend,

Radio Tramps of Columbus will have the

audience dancing, performing pop, rock and

dance cover tunes featuring radio hits from

the 1980s to today.

Cornhole tourney, 5K, car show, and

dunk-a-dignitary

The Merri Mac Park Miracle group is

hosting a double elimination cornhole tournament

starting at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 6. The

entry fee is $40 per team. Cash prizes go to

the top teams: first place, $400; second

Questions about vehicles in yards

By Kristy Zurbrick

Madison Editor

A resident addressed Mount Sterling village

council on July 26, seeking clarity

about legislation that governs vehicles

parked in yards.

Melissa Louria, who lives at 76 W. Main

St., said she and her husband have several

vehicles parked on their property. All of the

vehicles are drivable, she said; some pertain

to her husband’s job as a truck driver. Some

are parked on a concrete pad; some are

parked in the yard.

Louria said her husband was told the vehicles

in the yard are a violation of village

ordinances and that he could incur penalties.

She said she tried to find information

about the ordinances on the village’s website

but had no luck.

“We’re trying to figure out to work within

the (rules) and be able to live here without

concern of tickets and towing and things

like that,” she told council.

Council member Becky Martin, chair of

the nuisance and abatement committee,

said the village has ordinances on the books

that pertain to vehicles (cars, boats, motorcycles,

trailers, campers, etc.) parked in

yards. She said the committee is working to

combine some of those ordinances and make

them clearer and, therefore, “more user

friendly.”

The committee had hoped to present the

amended ordinances at the July 26 council

meeting but need more time to work on

them, Martin said.

“Every decision we make is just based on

what we feel like is best for the village and to make the village look

beautiful and appealing and attractive to new businesses and to

new homes,” Martin said. “So, all decisions we make kind of revolve

around that. We welcome any input, of course.”

She invited Louria and anyone else from the public to attend the

nuisance and abatement committee meetings. The next meeting is

Aug. 4 at 3:30 p.m. at town hall.

Events

The village is showing “Up” at the next movie night, set for July

31 at Mason Park. The Madison County Sheriff’s Office will give a

short bike safety presentation. The village will be giving away bike

helmets, scooters, and bicycles.

The village’s Food & Flea is scheduled for Aug. 1, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.,

at Mason Park. Little Bear food truck will be serving up sandwiches.

Council member David Timmons, a member of American Legion

Post 417, reported the post is working on ideas for displaying flags

representing the different branches of the military in downtown

Mount Sterling. The goal, he said, is to have the flags installed in

time for Veterans Day services on Nov. 11. Legion representatives

plan to present plans at an upcoming council meeting.

Timmons also noted the Mount Sterling Community Museum,

located in the lower level of Mount Sterling Public Library, is showcasing

back-to-school memorabilia in its current exhibit.

The We Care Coalition, an affiliate of Madison County Prevention

Services, is looking to host a community conversation in Mount

Sterling this fall. Council approved the coalition’s use of town hall

for the event, tentatively set for Oct. 7. The purpose of the event is

to inform the public about prevention, treatment and support services

for people working through substance use and mental health

wellness issues.

a medal. All entrants receive a t-shirt. For details and to sign up,

The Madison County Democratic Central

Committee has announced their endorsement

of a Democratic candidate in the Aug.

3 special primary election. The election will

determine who will vie for Ohio’s U.S. 15th

Congressional District seat in the Nov. 2

general election.

Steve Stivers, a Republican, vacated the

seat in May to take a job as president and

CEO of the Ohio Chamber of Commerce.

“We wholeheartedly endorse Allison

Russo,” said Anne Gorman, chair of the

county’s Democratic party. “We were impressed

with her knowledge of what’s going

on in the State House, and her experience

as a representative will make her a very viable

candidate for the Senate.”

Russo is one of two Democratic candidates

on the Aug. 3 ballot. Greg Betts is the

other candidate.

Russo holds a doctoral degree in health

policy from The George Washington University

and a master’s degree in public health

epidemiology from the University of Alabama

at Birmingham. In her professional

career, she has served as a public health

policy consultant for nearly 20 years. She is

serving her second term as a member of the

Ohio House of Representatives, representing

District 24.

Last week, the Madison Messenger reported

that the Madison County Republican

Central Committee endorsed Bob Peterson,

one of 11 Republicans running for the seat.

Kira and Mickey looking for their forever homes

The following are among the pets up for

adoption at the Humane Society of Madison

County (HSMC). If you are interested in

adopting a pet, fill out an application online

at www.hsmcohio.org or call the shelter at

(614) 879-8368.

Kira

Kira is a 2-

to 3-year-old

tuxedo domestic

short hair

who absolutely

loves to cuddle

up and give affection.

She

came to the selter

after being

found in a carrier

off to the

side of routes

56 and 71. Kira

You’d never

guess she had a rough start before making

her way to the shelter. She’s been nothing

but cuddles since she first arrived. She’s

very playful and loves to keep a keen eye on

her surroundings. She doesn’t get along

with dogs or other cats, so she should be the

only pet in the household.

Adoption fees are $80 for kittens up to 6

months old and $60 for cats 7 months and

older. The fee includes a FeLV/FIV test,

spay or neuter, shots, deworming, and a

one-year rabies shot (if old enough). Fees

can be paid by cash or credit card.

Mickey

Mickey arrived at the shelter as a stray at

the end of June. He is a 7-year-old German

short hair pointer mix weighing about 55

pounds. He is an extremely sweet and a

happy guy that

loves everyone he

meets. He loves to

be out and about

with the staff and

volunteers, and

he will do anything

you ask him

to for a snack.

This guy could

run around for

hours. He loves to

chase any toy.

You would not believe

that this guy

is 7 years old by

Mickey

the amount of energy he has, but what

Mickey loves most of all is snuggling up to

someone for some love. He loves other dogs a

little too much. He often comes off as rude or

pushy because he likes to be up in other dogs’

faces trying to play with them which can put

some dogs off. As far as kitties, Mickey could

care less about them. He just sniffed them

and walked away when shelter staff took him

for a visit to the kitty room.

We are not sure how this guy would feel

about children, but we would like to see him

go to a home with no small children; due to

his energy, he might knock down a small

child. Mickey knows his basic commands

and loves to keep his kennel clean and tidy.

Whoever adopts this handsome guy will be

one lucky family.

The shelter’s adoption fees for dogs are

as follows: shelter dogs, $150; prison dogs,

$200; puppies, $250; popular pure-breeds,

$400. Fees includes a Home Again microchip,

shots, deworming, heartworm testing

(if old enough), spay or neuter, and a

Four vying for two seats on Soil & Water board

Annual meeting will

include wagon tours,

election, fellowship

The Madison Soil and Water Conservation

District (SWCD) will hold an election

for its board of supervisors in conjunction

with its 74th Annual Meeting from 5 to 7

p.m. Aug. 19. Participants are invited to

cast votes in the election, take wagon tours,

bring chairs, and enjoy food and fellowship.

Two individuals will be elected to three-year

terms.

The event will be held outdoors at the

Gwynne Conservation Area, 690 Arbuckle

Rd., London. The public is welcome to attend.

Optional picnic dinner tickets can be

purchased for $10 each at the Madison

SWCD office or online at madisonsoilandwater.com

by Aug. 12.

The SWCD board of supervisors consists

of community leaders elected by county residents

to give direction on soil and water

conservation programs to address local natural

resources concerns. They volunteer

their time for three-year terms. Candidates

in this year’s election are Nancy Denes-

Sparks, Jonathan Francis, Robert A.

Hunter, and A.J. Schmitt.

Nancy Denes-Sparks, 7550 Scenic Dr.,

West Jefferson, has been a special education

paraprofessional/job coach with Dublin City

Schools for the past 21 years. She grew up

in Jefferson Township on her family’s farm,

Denes Tree Farm. She served on West Jefferson

village council from 1994 to 1998,

when she moved out of the village. She volunteers

with Sts. Simon and Jude Catholic

Church, the West Jefferson Ox Roast and

various organizations in the community. As

of this year, she is part of a third generation

4-H family, with her oldest granddaughter

taking a market goat project to the fair.

Denes-Sparks believes Madison County

always has been a strong agricultural

county and, with current growth, there is a

great need to make sure natural resources

are protected. Many areas of the country

struggle to maintain and collect quality

water, so we need to be good stewards of our

water and land for future generations, she

said. She knows she would have a lot to

learn as a member of the board and would

welcome the challenge to serve Madison

County.

Jonathan Francis, 9990 Lilly Chapel

Georgesville Rd., West Jefferson, is a salesman

and integrated solutions specialist at

Ag-Pro and is seeking his third term on the

board. He grew up on a farm and continues

to farm today.

Francis feels the most important natural

resource issue in Madison County is water.

Rain does not always come at the right place

at the right time. The challenge is handling

drainage and runoff in an economically and

environmentally sound way, he said. He is

interested in running for the board again

because he likes to be involved and he

knows there is a lot to learn. He sees the

board as a good opportunity to volunteer his

time to benefit others in the community.

Robert A. Hunter, 7800 Correll-Maxey

Rd., London, is a retired farmer and self-employed

certified public accountant. He is

seeking his fifth term on the board. He currently

serves as secretary/treasurer.

Hunter has lived in Madison County his entire

life except for one year he lived in

Columbus. He and his wife, Anne, have two

sons, Sam and Jesse. He belongs to several

professional organizations, including Ohio

Society of CPAs, Madison County Farm Bureau,

Ohio Cattlemen’s Association, Ohio

Corn Growers’ Association, and the Ohio

Soybean Association.

Hunter believes managing the water

supply and water quality are the most important

concerns in Madison County and

that a time may come when our grandchildren

or great-grandchildren will wonder

why we did not do more to maintain water

quality. Hunter is running again because he

likes being actively involved in the conservation

practices being implemented in

Madison County and being a part of preserving

farmland and family farms.

A.J. Schmitt, 310 Riverside Dr., Gal-

A.J. Schmitt

Nancy Denes-Sparks Jonathan Francis Robert A. Hunter

loway, has been in the construction business

his whole life and has a civil engineering degree.

For the last 20 years, he has worked

on residential remodeling. Prior to that, he

worked on municipal sewage plants, wastewater

treatment plants and all kinds of

commercial buildings. He and his wife, Angela,

have two grown children.

Schmitt believes the top priority is preserving

stream quality for future generations.

He feels fortunate to live next to

Darby Creek, a state and national scenic

river, and sees how keeping water clean

leads to healthier fish and better recreation.

He is running for the board because he is

passionate for water quality, he has time to

give and wants to serve the community.

Options for casting a ballot are: cast a

ballot at the kick-off event on Aug. 19; request

an absentee ballot by sending an e-

mail to gail.wilson@oh.nacdnet.net; or visit

the Madison SWCD office, 831 U.S. Highway

42 NE, London, after Aug. 19. Voting

by absentee or in person at the Madison

SWCD office will be available until Sept. 17.

For more information, call (740) 852-4003,

option 3.

Established in 1947, Madison SWCD is a

legal subdivision of state government that

provides natural resource management assistance

to county landowners and other

units of local government. The district is

funded by the Madison County commissioners.

The county funds are supplemented by

funding from the Ohio Department of Agriculture.

A five-member board of county residents

governs the district. Board members

serve staggered three-year terms.

Visit ‘Cruzin’ the 176’ for cars and porkchops

By Kristy Zurbrick

Madison Editor

With a new location comes a new name for South Charleston

American Legion Post 176’s annual celebration of cars, food, and fun.

Cruzin’ the Park is now Cruzin’ the 176. Last year, the Legion

moved the event from Community Park to the parking lot at First

Presbyterian Church, which sits across from the Legion Hall at 15

N. Chillicothe St.

“First Presbyterian was very gracious last year in letting us use

their lot, and they’re letting us use it again this year. We are thankful

for that,” said Sam Stucky, an associate member of Post 176 and

South Charleston’s mayor. Stucky’s father, Dave, was a member of

the committee that started the cruise-in 1994.

The 27th annual cruise-in is slated for 4 to 8 p.m. Aug. 21. Admission

is free for spectators and cruise-in participants. All makes,

models and vintages of vehicles are welcome. The show attracted

approximately 50 cars last year. The church parking lot can hold

historical properties

The following are updates from the South Charleston Heritage

Commission:

• The Heritage Commission soon will place an “Opera House -

Second Floor” sign near the south entrance of South Charleston’s

town hall.

“After 142 years, we decided it was time to clearly identify the

location of the opera house,” said Sue Mattinson, commission president.

• The installation date for the new stair lift to the opera house

is set for the last week of October.

• Chinking will be repaired in the commission’s 1825 log cabin

this summer.

• “Edward Edwards: The Man Who Built South Charleston,

Ohio” is at the printers. The commission expects delivery of the

books the first week of August and has set tentative dates of Aug.

8 and Aug. 22 for sales of the book in the community room at town

hall, 1-3 p.m. each day. Watch for confirmation of sale dates on the

commission’s Facebook page and flyers posted around the village.

The dinners are $7 and include a porkchop, baked

beans, and choice of potato salad or macaroni salad. A

single porkchop without sides is $5. Hotdogs, chips, pop

and water also are on the menu.

“All we try to do is supply a good family-fun atmosphere

where people can enjoy some good looking cars,

meet up with old friends, and have some good food and

a good time,” Stucky said.

Proceeds go to the Legion’s scholarship fund which

distributes $4,000 to $5,000 each year to graduating

Southeastern High School students.

The car show is one of the Legion’s main fundraisers.

The organization also sells food during the South

School district places renewal levy on fall ballot

By Kristy Zurbrick

Madison Editor

Southeastern Local Schools is placing a renewal request

for an operating levy on the Nov. 2 ballot.

The school board met in special session on July 27 to

pass the second of two resolutions needed to place the

levy on the ballot. The deadline to submit issues to the

board of elections for the fall ballot is Aug. 4.

New services at Houston Library

The school district is seeking renewal of a 3.69-mill

operating levy for five years. The current levy expires

at the end of 2022. The levy, which helps to pay for expenses

including salaries, benefits, curriculum materials,

supplies and utilities, has been on the books since

2002.

“This represents no new taxes,” said Ben Kitchen,

district treasurer. “We want to be considerate of voters.

The Houston branch of the Clark County Public Library

system, is offering the following programs and

services. For details, call (937) 462-8047. The library is

located at 5 W. Jamestown St., South Charleston.

• Take-home Activity Bags. Each bag contains materials

to make a craft and theme-related activity

sheets. Activity sheets may include coloring pages,

mazes, word games and more. Bags are available for

pickup while supplies last the weeks of Aug. 2, Aug. 9,

Aug. 16 and Aug. 23.

• DVDs and Hotspots. Three-day loan Express

DVDs and Hotspots are back.

• New in the Digital Library. Go to:

www.ccplohio.org/faq/digital-library/ to learn how to access

Hoopla Flex, Flipster Digital Magazine, and Freegal

Music.

• Flex Borrows. In addition to the 15 hoopla instant

borrows you receive each month with your Clark County

Public Library card, you now have 10 hoopla “flex borrows”

you can use on specifically marked hoopla Flex e-

books and audiobooks. With hoopla Flex you will find

new and popular books to borrow now or place on hold

to read later. Unlike the 15 monthly hoopla instant borrowsh,

flex borrows don’t have monthly expirations.

• Flipster Digital Magazines. Get instant access to

magazines such as People, Bon Appetit, OK! Magazine,

Newsweek, and Popular Mechanics in an easy-to-read

digital format. Read magazines online or download

them to your mobile device for offline viewing.

• Freegal Music. Freegal offers access to about 15

million songs, including Sony Music’s catalog of legendary

artists, and over 40,000 music videos. In total,

the collection is comprised of music from over 40,000 labels

with music that originates in over 100 countries.

There is no software to download, and there are no digital

rights management restrictions. With your library

card, you can stream Freegal Music up to three hours

per day and download three songs per week.

With everything going on, we’re just trying to keep the status quo.”

If passed, the renewal will continue to generate $490,000 per

year. The cost to the taxpayer is $369 per year per $100,000 of property

valuation.

The levy accounts for approximately 5 percent of the district’s

annual revenues.

“Five percent might not sound like a lot, but we are in the breakeven

business,” Kitchen said. “We are very reliant on that income

to keep us where we need to be.”

David Shea, district superintendent, said one of the reasons the

levy is important is it helps the district to maintain smaller class

sizes—typically, 17 to 20 students per teacher.

“The district is very appreciative of the support of the community

with this renewal levy and all our levies and income tax,” Shea

added.

The deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 2 election is Oct. 4.

For more information, contact the Clark County Board of Elections

at (937) 521-2120. The elections office is located at 3130 E. Main

John “Jack” Bricker Seamon

1939-2021

Lt. Col USAF Retired

Jack passed away peacefully at home with his wife and daughter

by his side on Thursday, July 15, 2021. He fought a fierce battle

with cancer.

Jack was born in Columbus, Ohio but grew up in West Jefferson,

Ohio. Jack dearly loved West Jeff and all his friends there and visited yearly for the

school reunions. He kept up with the football scores and happenings of the West Jefferson

Roughriders.

He attended Virginia Military Institute, graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering,

and went on to receive his M.S. degree in Astronautics\Space Facilities from the Air

Force Institute of Technology. Jack rarely failed to attend a VMI reunion and reminisce

with his Brother Rats remembering “how tough” they had it compared to today.

Jack loved and proudly served his country with the US Air Force for twenty years and

of course made many friends at each of his assignments. After his retirement he

went on to work with Fairfax County in the Facilities Management Department.

He loved watching just about any sport, especially his Ohio State Buckeyes and Washington

Capitals and Nationals. He played some sports himself in high school and college.

Jack was an avid golfer and enjoyed finding new courses and challenges. He

and his daughter traveled to many courses around the country. His philosophy to a

better game was usually buying a new club. In recent years he was fortunate to be

able to spend several months a year at Lexington Country Club in Ft. Myers, Florida.

He reasoned that he needed to own a place there as the golf fees would be cheaper.

Jack will be missed by his many friends and family. He will be remembered for his

story telling, trivia knowledge, and his ability to remember exact dates.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Walter E. Seamon; brothers, Bill

Connor and Bud Seamon; brother-in-law, Russell Metcalfe; and niece, Nancy Conner.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jayne Seamon; his daughter and son-in-law,

Melissa and David Kalagher; sisters-in- law, Norma Connor, Linda Metcalfe, Tina

Metcalfe; and brother-in-law, Miles Metcalfe. He also leaves his nephews and nieces

Doug (Jill), Jeremy (Anita), Cynthia (Tom), Doug (Andrea), and Kimberly (John).

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 14 at 11am at St. Matthew’s

United Methodist Church, 8617 Little River Turnpike, Annandale, VA. The service may

be viewed on the church website for those who wish to attend remotely. The burial

will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers the family asks you consider a donation to the St. Matthew’s Food

Closet c\o St. Matthew’s or to Sufficient Grace, P.O. Box 92, West Jefferson, OH 43162

Master Gardeners hosting Grow Native seminar

The world as we know it depends heavily on the work of bugs. A

strange thought, isn’t it?

Without insects, our food supply would be greatly diminished

and the variety extremely limited. And, because these native insects

can only survive on the plants with which they evolved, they,

in turn, are completely dependent on the native plants that provide

sustenance for them.

This circle of life will be the topic of the Grow Native seminar

the Madison County Master Gardeners are presenting on Aug. 28,

9 a.m.-3 p.m., in the London High School auditorium.

The speakers are as follows:

• Experts from the Ohio State University Extension will speak

about Ohio’s native trees and how to promote beneficial bugs in the

home landscape.

• Ohio Department of Natural Resources representatives will

present information about “Go Native,” Ohio’s new native plant initiative.

• Horticulturist Nancy Linz, who spearheaded the effort to officially

name April as “Native Plant Month” at the state and national

levels, will explain what this designation means.

• Debra Knapke, known as the “Garden Sage,” is an author, garden

designer, radio talk show personality and all-around horticulture

expert. She will end the day with a talk entitled, “The Native

and Nativar Toolbox.” Knapke will answer as many questions as

possible after her talk.

Additionally, Gale Martin, owner of Natives in Harmony, a na-
