Memories of White House shared
• By Susan Sandys
CANTABRIANS have shared
their memories of White House
as the former restaurant has
been sitting on the market for
almost one year.
Photos of the building, now
a private home, attracted many
nostalgic comments from people
when posted on the public
Remembering Christchurch
Facebook page.
People talked of stopping at
the State Highway One restaurant
at Dunsandel for scones
with jam and cream, and of
previous owners going back to
the 1950s.
“I used to take my nana there
for Devonshire teas,” said one
woman.
Another said her first job was
a waitress at the restaurant in
1956 when Harrison’s owned it.
“Hot chips from there to keep
us warm while we watched
(Darfield v Dunsandel) at
rugby,” said another.
Some commenters bemoaned
the fact it was no longer a commercial
premises.
“In these days of fast cars,
it’s just in the wrong place for a
cafe,” said one man.
“It hung in there for years
when others of the same ilk
failed,” said another.
The owner, emailed through
Trade Me where the home has
been listed for private sale since
October last year, did not wish to
talk to the Selwyn Times.
Ray White had the building
listed for six weeks in
2017, seeking offers more than
$595,000, but it did not sell.
It was listed as having three
bedrooms, industrial kitchen,
bar areas and open plan restaurant/cafe
area, large gardens
filled with mature trees. There
was a spacious two-bedroom
cottage on site, as well as sheds.
The same vendor listed the
building privately on Trade
Me in October last year, where
it remains for sale, calling for
offers over $650,000.
