Over the last 12 months, Cantabrians
have embraced the possibilities of remote
working - and rural landowners are
enjoying the benefits. An increase in
people choosing to work from home, or
trade the bustle of major urban centres for
relaxed country living, has led to a buoyant
lifestyle subdivision market since the onset
of Covid-19.

Andy Nurse says Canterbury is currently
experiencing “unprecedented interest” in
lifestyle properties.
“It seems the Covid-19 pandemic has
created, for many people, an increase in
the desirability of living in the country,” he
says. “There are multiple buyers for each
listing, and [listings are] selling promptly at
asking prices. The demand is not only from
Christchurch city residents, but the North
Island - Auckland in particular - as well as
expat New Zealanders returning home.”
The increase that Andy has seen locally
is supported by national rural sales data
from the Real Estate Institute of New
Zealand (REINZ). Lifestyle sales volumes
in Canterbury have lifted 125% in the last
12 months, according to REINZ’s May
2021 property reports. The median price
per hectare has increased by 20%–66%
across the same period, with variance
depending on the type of farm operation.
As at the end of July, Canterbury was
holding its own with increasing median
prices reflecting a constrained supply and a
continuation of strong demand.
