Davies said he lost 19 of 28
gum trees on his property.
The trees were about 30-yearsold.
“It was the same as the last
big wind (in 2013), when I lost
100 trees,” Davies said.
Fellow resident Sheena
Broughton also lost mature
trees, including blue gums,
macrocarpa and pine trees.
“They fell on my chicken
run, but the chickens are fine,”
Broughton said.
She said Sunday night’s
windstorm was not as bad in
the area, however, it had been
accompanied by an “amazing”
thunderstorm.
Springfield Volunteer Fire
Brigade chief Grant Williams
was among residents who had
sheds damaged in Sunday
night’s event. He lost half of
his open wood shed, while he
knew of other residents who
had had fences blown over.
One Kowhai Bush resident
had a plastic tank arrive
delivered to their letter box by
Sunday’s overnight wind.
They found out later it
came from a neighbouring
property.

RESIDENTS AT Annat near
Sheffield are grateful firefighters
saved their homes in roaring
winds on Friday.
Flames threatened six homes
on Searles Rd after a tree crashing
onto power lines most likely
sparked the blaze.

Patrick woke about 5am
to an “almighty bang” as
the tree fell.
Patrick is a member
of the Sheffield Volunteer
Fire Brigade and
within two minutes his
pager went. The couple
realised they could smell smoke.
They looked out the window
to see flames about 400m away
in trees, overgrown grass and
broom.
“It looked pretty massive,
especially at five o’clock in the
morning when you can’t really
see,” Bronwyn said.
Patrick raced to the station,
while Bronwyn sheltered in
the home with their frightened
teenagers.
Bronwyn said she was grateful
for the firefighters saving the
day, keeping the fire about 400m
away. She also felt lucky that the

blaze was called in straight away,
by neighbours who noticed it
when they were checking livestock.
“We are very grateful that we
still have our house,” she said.
Chief Neville Croy said the fire
was in about 60 sq m of scrub
and grass.
The brigade was assisted
by units from Darfield,
Springfield and Kirwee.
Croy said it took longer
than usual to reach the
scene.
“There were trees down
everywhere with the winds,
so we had to be careful getting
there,” Croy said.
Croy said the winds were blowing
in excess of 100km/h. They
were comparable to those of the
big wind of 2013, but felt more
gusty.
“It’s as strong as I have felt,” he
said.
Springfield Volunteer Fire Brigade

the winds were on a par with
2013. Then damaging winds on
Sunday followed Friday’s event.
The brigade was called to a
blaze about 5pm on Sunday, west
of Springfield, which the wind
had whipped up in trees and tree
stumps.
