Industry insight
Presented by MOTUL
Hugh Dowding
Motul Vice President – Strategic Committee
The Garage recently interviewed Hugh Dowding, who is Vice President of the Strategic Committee at
Motul, at the Silverstone Classic weekend, Hugh gives us his insight into Motul and why the company is
looking forward to the opportunities the future will provide as well as the passion they hold within the
industry. The Garage would like to thank Hugh and the team at Motul for their kind sponsorship of the
Industry Insight during 2021.
You recently revealed a lot of new products at the Silverstone
Classic weekend, exciting times at Motul?
The UK is the second largest market in Europe, a market
where people really love and care about cars. Once they buy
a car they really look after them and Silverstone of course, is
the home of Motorsport, with our new product launch at this
iconic venue there are a lot of reasons to be excited.
You are well known in the biking world predominately, but you
have a far wider range than that including being involved in
Formula1 back in 1974?
Yes, people do know us for bikes and power sports, but we
have always been heavily involved in four wheels as well,
indeed at the Classic weekend we had a Forumla1 1974 BRM
car on our stand, when Motul were actually the headline
6 THE GARAGE
6, 7 Industry Insight.indd 1 16/09/2021 08:45

sponsor at the time for BRM, so we have been involved
with four wheeled motorsports for all those years as well.
We are also renewing our efforts in the Automotive
Aftermarket with a new team and a new degree of
concentration on that specific market.
You clearly have a foothold in the Classic car industry, how
big a market is it for you today?
Whatever happens in the modern-day car market, I
think we can be assured that the classic market is going
to increase significantly. If you look at the figures from
the Federation of Historic Vehicles, there are now more
than 1.5 million classic vehicles in the UK alone. So, it
is an industry that is extremely important in terms of
employment of people, skills in the UK and to our GDP.
You are certainly a leader in the classic market, it also must
be a joy to work within it?
Yes, there are a number of key classic markets, the US is
the biggest, closely followed by Japan, the UK, France,
Germany, the Netherlands, but our own market in the UK,
as it is in the Formula1 world, is a real hub for expertise and
restoration.
We see a lot of the German OEMs coming to the UK for
large restoration projects, because of the unique skills
levels we have in this country.
With Motul being a worldwide renowned brand and the
ICE ban coming to the UK in 2030, how are Motul working
towards this and adapting to different countries plans?
The dilemma is it could be different for every country, so
as you quite rightly say, 2030 for ICE, 2035 for Hybrid in
the UK, but if we look at the developing world, it could
be many more years before they go down this route from
both an infrastructure and a GDP point of view, which
means the balancing act we need to find is to deal with the
mature markets to grow and sustain the business we have,
to keep up to date with the specifications that are still
continuously being updated for the Internal Combustion
Engines, whilst also considering the next great thing.
We already have a comprehensive range for Hybrids, but
beyond that we are beginning to look at new generation
vehicles.
Although EV Vehicles have been around since 1881, we really
are just at the beginning of development and evolving in this
sector?
It is evolving, ironically a lot of the first electric vehicles
were that far back as you say and the Internal Combustion
only took over because of its convenience distributing the
fuel, there are still global issues about the availability and
security of charging network.
We also need to remember, development isn’t over, we
still have hydrogen in the future and Porsche are talking
about synthetic fuels. There is a lot of uncertainty at the
moment with the OEMs as to which will be the longterm
view. Therefore, our research and development
departments are currently split across all of those areas to
make sure we maintain our presence in everything.
We sense a lot of excitement at Motul whilst many others in
the industry have gulped at the prospect of 2030.
Industry Insights celebrates the 50th Anniversary of
the first fully synthetic motor oil: Motul 300V
For details of the wide range of Motul workshop oils and
other garage products, check out: www.motul.com
Our huge passion lies in motorsport, and we know it will
always continue in every sort of form.
We also are very passionate about the classic car
business, and we believe out of adversity comes
opportunity.
Motul is a privately owned, agile company with a global
footprint which gives us the ability to adapt, and we will
adapt.
The excitement comes from the new developments that
we have introduced at the Classic Weekend in the Car Care
arena and especially the Bio-Clean concept that you very
kindly covered in your last issue of the Garage Magazine,
which can be used for many different applications within
the Garage workshop.
So what does the next eight years hold within Motul?
It is about continuing a profitable business whilst sustaining
the research and development for the future that is able to
handle the customers we have today and to introduce an
even better range of products doubled with an even better
service. As well as always being on the lookout for the next
great things and making sure that Motul is prepared for
whatever challenges that may well be.
The classic car market is only going to grow now with the end
of the internal combustion engine, isn’t it?
Yes, personally I am a classic car owner and very passionate
about the cars themselves as well as classic car racing, both
Motul and myself hope we get the derogations we need for
classic cars to continue to survive as they are today and the
market to even grow stronger.
It is the noise, the smell, the sound of a classic car and
let’s hope that persists.
NEWS
HELLA receives further series
orders for innovative chip-based
headlamp system
• Consistently further developed:
HELLA brings to the road the next
generation of chip-based
headlamp technology Digital Light
SSL|HD
• Highly scalable: world’s first
asymmetrical headlamp concept
realised
HELLA, the internationally positioned
automotive supplier has further
developed, and received additional
orders for, its innovative chip-based
headlamp matrix system “Solid State
Lighting | High Definition” (SSL|HD). For
example, the technology is now also being
used in an all-electric Sports Utility Vehicle
(SUV) from an international automobile
manufacturer and in a premium vehicle
from a German automobile manufacturer
with the vehicles expected to go into
series production in mid-2024. The total
order volume amounts to up to 200 million
euros over the term of the contract.
Development and production of the
headlamps takes place in the global HELLA
network, including in Germany, the Czech
Republic and China.
“The orders are once again confirmation
of the added value that our innovative
SSL | HD technology offers both car
manufacturers and end customers,”
says Dr. Frank Huber, Managing Director
responsible for the Lighting division at
HELLA. “It is not only innovative and
powerful, but also highly scalable. It
enables our customers to individually
select the best possible combination of
security and performance. This makes the
technology very interesting, especially for
the volume segment.”
For the first time, HELLA has
implemented the SUV headlamp with an
asymmetrical arrangement by integrating
the SSL|HD module on only one side of
the headlamp. The module also makes
it easy to switch from left-hand to
right-hand traffic and vice versa. Highprecision
digital pixel switching also
provides further customisation options
such as coming-home and leaving-home
animations and other communication
functionalities. For example, symbols can
be projected onto the road to interact
with the driver. To ensure optimum
illumination of the road, the SSL|HD
functionalities are supplemented by
additional components such as BiLED and
matrix modules.
HELLA’s SSL|HD technology represents
the evolutionary further development of
LED matrix systems. This is associated
with the requirement to achieve both
a very high light output and a very high
range of functions with a minimised size
of the light modules. The SSL Micro-LED
Clusters are electronic components in
which currently between 100 and 25,000
LED pixels are arranged in a very small
space. These LED clusters are combined
as a light source in the headlamp and
offer new application possibilities due to
the higher number of pixels. For example,
they enable partial masking of oncoming
vehicles and the illumination of traffic
signs. In the long term, projections of the
safety distance could also be realised,
or pedestrians or cyclists could be
highlighted by means of light.
NEWS
TotalEnergies to introduce a 100% renewable fuel
at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and at the FIA World
Endurance Championship (WEC)
Competition is a key driver for innovation: the extreme
constraints met in endurance racing –race duration and
high mileage- are constantly pushing for the development
of higher-performance fuels, which however must also address
nowadays the new challenges posed by the energy and environmental
transition.
This 100% renewable fuel to be offered by TotalEnergies will
be produced on bioethanol basis*, made from wine residues
from the French agricultural industry, and from ETBE produced at
TotalEnergies’ Feyzin refinery near Lyon (France) from feedstock
also sourced from by the circular economy. This fuel should allow
an immediate reduction of at least 65% of the racing cars’ CO2
emissions.
Named “Excellium Racing 100”, this fuel opens a new chapter in
the Endurance racing and motorsport energy transition for all the
actors involved. It will have all the required qualities for a racing
fuel and will meet automakers’ requirements, as well as the latest
FIA criteria for sustainable fuels, by leveraging the expertise of
TotalEnergies Additives and Fuels Solutions. This team has notably
designed “Excellium Endurance”, the fuel used this year for the
24 Hours of Le Mans 2021 which already includes 10% of advanced
bioethanol.
“Our ambition is to be a major player in the energy transition and
to get to net zero carbon emissions by 2050, together with society,”
declared Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies.
“TotalEnergies is supporting its customers and partners in their
evolutions, by thus applying its strategy to motorsport: sustainable
liquid fuels, electricity, batteries, hybridization, hydrogen...
Advanced biofuels have an undeniable part to play in helping the
transport sector to reduce its CO2 emissions immediately. This 100%
renewable fuel, that will be made available in motor racing as soon
as 2022, is a perfect illustration. As we are becoming a broad energy
company, the racing track is more than ever an open-air laboratory
for TotalEnergies.”
Jean Todt, FIA President, said: “Endurance racing, by its nature,
has always served as an excellent research and development platform
and it is an important milestone to have the FIA World Endurance
Championship switching to 100% sustainable fuel. It’s FIA’s major
goal to implement sustainable energy sources across its portfolio of
motor sport disciplines, thus paving the way in the reduction of CO2
emission, perfectly reflecting our race-to-road strategy as well as the
FIA’s PurposeDriven movement.”
Pierre Fillon, President of the Automobile Club de l’Ouest said:
“Increasing awareness of social and environmental matters over the
last few years has led the motor racing world to focus deeply on these
issues. The 24 Hours of Le Mans has been an experimental playground
for innovation ever since the first race in 1923 and this exciting new
development is in perfect continuity with our founding principles.
Our long-standing partner TotalEnergies channels its expertise into
developing sustainable solutions. This new, fully renewable fuel is
testament to our wholehearted commitment to CSR. When it comes
to sustainable development, we continue to step up to the bar,
delivering our promise to play our part in sustainable mobility.”
Frédéric Lequien, FIA WEC & ELMS CEO, commented: “It is
extremely encouraging that TotalEnergies is paving the way for others
and creating a 100% renewable fuel. I firmly believe that the WEC
and ELMS are the ideal playground for TotalEnergies in order to trial
its new innovative Excellium Racing 100 fuel. Endurance racing is the
ultimate test for all road-related products and we are delighted that
TotalEnergies has chosen our championships and Le Mans to help
launch this cutting-edge new creation.”
Since 2018, TotalEnergies is the partner and official fuel supplier
of the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (A.C.O.), creator and organizer of
the 24 Hours of Le Mans. TotalEnergies share common values with
the ACO : pioneering spirit and taste for performance. Since their
beginning, the 24 Hours of Le Mans are a laboratory for automotive
development : security, evolution of motorizations and fuels,
aerodynamism, fuels consumption reduction, hybridation…
The forthcoming introduction of a 100% renewable fuel will
complete this partnership between TotalEnergies and the ACO in
the promotion of new energies. Hydrogen partner of the ACO the
H24 Racing team, TotalEnergies a designed and build the first mobile
hydrogen filling station, to support Mission H24 in the competition it
is engaged in.
NISSENS EGR VALVE SOLUTIONS FOR
PROMINENT VAG TDI APPLICATIONS
The EGR valve used in more than seven million European
VAG diesel applications utilising the 1.4, 1.6 and
2.0-litre TDI units can be particularly problematic, as
it is especially susceptible to heat and vibration, as well as
excessive engine load. Naturally, the faulty valve has to be
replaced, but as the issues are largely due to the design of the
original equipment (OE) part, opting to fit a superior solution
provides a great opportunity for workshops.
Fortunately, the Nissens Efficiency & Emissions division
has stepped in to provide just such a solution by addressing
the issues that contribute to the valve’s premature failure
and ensuring its proper function and long lifespan, despite
exposure to the harsh working conditions it has to deal with.
By applying several design improvements over the original
and proving them over a series of comprehensive tests, the
Nissens team has developed a durable replacement part
(Nissens part number 98178), which supersedes 10 OE part
numbers and performs to the standards defined by the
vehicle manufacturer and therefore provides the aftermarket
with a competitive, genuine Nissens quality, solution.
The Nissens solution
Optimised gearbox design – Recognising the problems
associated with heat and lubrication, Nissens significantly
reduced tolerance and therefore friction, by applying specific
PTFE, high-temperature resistant grease and upgraded the
plastic material of the gear wheels in the two-stage gearbox.
Improved design of the valve stem – To avoid the known
malfunction of the valve caused by the engine load and
vibrations, Nissens improved the valve’s stem and lever arm
fi xings.
DC-motor design upgrade – The motor’s bearing system has
also been improved to ensure its reliable operation and long
service life.
Industry interview
Today The Garage talks to...
Andy Hamilton
CEO, LKQ Euro Car Parts
It’s been a testing time for businesses over the last 18 months; how
has LKQ Euro Car Parts managed?
The coronavirus pandemic and Brexit would each be a lot to face
on their own, and we’ve been dealing with them at the same time.
I think our business has demonstrated remarkable resilience in the
face of these challenges.
During the first national lockdown our branches and drivers had
to quickly adapt to new ways of working to safely support our key
workers, and roadside recovery and emergency services customers.
It was a massive challenge and I’m incredibly proud of the tenacity
and passion of our people, because that’s what kept us moving
throughout.
Coming into 2021, we faced the supply-side shocks of Brexit, a
global capacity crunch on shipping containers and stress on supply
chains from materials and component shortages. The latter issues
persist to this day. We’re thankful for having always invested in our
truly world class logistics infrastructure, which is helping us to lean
into these challenges.
Now the country is getting back to normal, have you found demand
changing?
Overall demand levels have been aligned to lockdown restrictions
throughout the pandemic, so now we are close to ‘normal’ trading
volumes, albeit with a different curve. The normal seasonal MOT
demand cycle has been shifted off its axis with a huge spike coming
this autumn, followed by a deep drop soon after.
We have noticed some changes to normal trading periods and are
waiting to see if they stick over the coming months.
For some customers, using our online channels for ordering is a
new habit that may stick. We’re keen to encourage more to do so,
especially in the aftermarket, as they digitise their businesses to
achieve greater convenience and efficiency.
Road usage has settled at about 90-95% of pre-pandemic levels,
with collisions at about 80-85%. If large parts of the economy
continue to operate with ‘hybrid’ or remote working, then this
reduction in volumes could be here to stay. The effects on
bodyshops will be more pronounced.
The CMA is in talks with the Government about the proposed new
block exemption rules; what are your concerns?
Our concern is that the CMA has been slow with the start of its
consultation, whereas the EU has already been speaking to industry
about what will replace the current Motor Vehicle Block Exemption
Regulations (MVBER) when they expire in 2023.
The CMA needs to hear from the broad cross section of
businesses working in the aftermarket about how critical MVBER is
to safeguarding their ability to trade – but also about how it needs
updating.
We fear that because there’s very little litigation taking place,
in which independent garages seek legal recourse from abuse by
the automotive giants, the CMA may believe there’s no problem to
legislate for. This is often what they look out for when evaluating
anti-competitive behaviours in markets.
But we’re not talking about a sector like telecoms where
companies with hundreds of millions of pounds compete with one
another. The independent aftermarket is made of up thousands of
small and micro businesses and here they are facing up to the might
of some of the world’s biggest businesses. It’s an impossible fight
and so they suffer in silence.
Following on from that question, what would you like to see
happen?
The major manufacturers have already been exploiting the gaps
that have opened in MVBER’s coverage, as vehicles have taken on
more new technology over the past decade. This is creating mini
monopolies of so-called ‘captive parts’. You see this already in
areas like electric vehicles and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems
(ADAS).
This needs reining back in, and any future legislation needs to be
flexible enough to accommodate emerging technologies.
But there are plenty of other examples of anti-competitive
behaviours that need reviewing as part of a wider look at the sector.
This includes things like the withholding of bulk Repair and
Maintenance Information (RMI), despite the very recent legislation
obliging manufacturers to do so.
And it means giving independent garages access to vehicles’
online service records, which are stored on their manufacturers’
private servers.
We’ve also heard of instances where drivers are wrongly told that
their warranties have been invalidated because a service wasn’t
carried out by a franchised dealer, or because it used non-branded
parts.
The CMA needs to hear about these practices, and we’d urge
anyone in the aftermarket that can cite such instances to come
forward. UKAFCAR, the British arm of AFCAR, the European-wide
Association for the Freedom of Car Repair, will help collate and
funnel this information into the consultation.
12 THE GARAGE
“Our concern is that the CMA has been slow with the start of its consultation, whereas
the EU has already been speaking to industry about what will replace the current Motor
Vehicle Block Exemption Regulations (MVBER) when they expire in 2023.”
EV ownership is growing; are you noticing any changing trends?
While it’s easy to overstate the immediate impact – the UK vehicle
parc will still only shift towards EVs in single-digit percentage figures
even by the time we reach the 2035 cut-off point for new petrol
and diesel registrations – we are still talking about a substantial
number of battery-powered vehicles on our roads.
There’s been a massive increase in the number of used plugin
vehicles (hybrids and pure EVs) being traded in the used car
market – up by 351% in Q2 this year alone. These new owners will be
looking for independent workshops with the ability to work on their
vehicles.
You started trialling EV vehicles across Isle of Wight earlier this
year, is the plan to roll them out across the country?
That’s our long-term goal. We have a fleet of 2,800 vehicles and are
proud of our ability to provide same-day delivery to almost all the
UK – it’s what our customers rely on us for. We need to make the
transition in such a way that we don’t compromise this. This will take
time, but the pilot in the Isle of Wight was an important first step,
and a successful one – we’re now preparing to extend this further
across our network.
What can we see from LKQ Euro Car Parts in the future?
We will always maintain our leadership position in the supply and
distribution of quality parts, but we are increasingly a solutions-led
partner to our customers, too. This transition is gathering pace
as we help the industry to get to grips with some of the complex
issues it’s facing up to.
Vehicles are becoming more complex, car ownership is being
replaced by new models of usage and mobility solutions, and
businesses and consumers are increasingly digitally-led – all of
which is creating disruption that we need to help our customers
adapt to, and then thrive off.
Then, there are more immediate challenges like labour shortages
and the new boom-to-bust demand cycle created by the shift of
hundreds of thousands of MOT deadlines last year. Garages need
solutions to these problems, just as much as they need parts.
Our solutions increasingly touch on every area of a garage’s
business, not just the technical elements in the workshop. We
can help garages to run their operations more productively and
efficiently, while offering their customers an excellent experience
that rivals the dealerships.
And you’ll see us taking more of a stand on the issues that affect
the future of independent garages, like with MVBER. We can use
our size and influence, alongside our partners at the major trade
federations, to help stand up for the rights of the UK’s 30,000
independent workshops and their 350,000 employees.
NEWS
Police seek support from automotive
industry following successful pilot that
reduced theft by 57%
The SmartWater Group, creator of
the world’s most highly accredited
proprietary forensic asset marking
solutions, is spearheading a new policebacked,
national scheme to deter the theft
of catalytic converters and other at-risk
components from UK vehicles.
In a recent SmartWater trial with the
National Infrastructure Crime Reduction
Partnership (NICRP) and the British
Transport Police (BTP), a reduction of
57% was recorded in catalytic converter
thefts over a five-month period. MOT test
centres, garages and workshops, are now
invited to become accredited registration
hubs for a national database, creating an
additional revenue stream and ensuring
all car owners can protect their vehicle
components from being targeted by
criminals.
Around 30% of all UK car thefts
are geared towards stealing catalytic
converters as market prices for precious
metals continue to rise. A simple, cost
effective ten-minute process, which any
garage could offer customers, is now
available to deter these crimes. With the
vehicle on the ramp, a special SmartWater
high temperature product is applied with
a brush and the unique formula reference
number is logged on the database against
the vehicle registration number.
The ‘National Asset Database’ is
operated by the SmartWater Group’s
Centre for Infrastructure and Asset
Protection (CIAP) on behalf of the police,
ensuring that any recovered stolen parts
can be identified and traced back to the
specific vehicle they were taken from.
Rachael Oakley, Director of CIAP said,
“This is an important step in providing
peace of mind and security to millions
of car owners. SmartWater is a highlyproven
deterrent to criminals and rogue
scrap metal dealers as it makes stolen
parts too hot to handle. We’re currently
focusing on catalytic converters but other
at-risk components such as batteries,
caravans, motorbikes and trailers can also
benefit registration on the National Asset
Database.”
Police Support
National Infrastructure Crime Reduction
Partnership (NICRP) lead and BTP
Superintendent, Mark Cleland, said:
“Thanks to the support of the Home Office
in creating the NICRP, our joint working
with Smartwater and other industry
partners, and the drive by enforcement
partners across the UK, we have made a
real impact in tackling metal and catalytic
converter crime.”
“While arrests continue to be made, it
is the preventative approach through the
forensic marking of catalytic converters
that gives motorists the opportunity to
protect their property and stop the crime
in the first place.”
Unlike the etching of serial numbers,
which can be clearly seen by the criminals
and removed easily by simply scrapping
with a screwdriver, SmartWater is invisible
to the naked eye but glows yellow under
UV light. Any attempt to scrap it off by
the criminal risks spreading incriminating
evidence onto their clothes, tools and
location. SmartWater scientists only need
a speck to identify which vehicle the
components belong to.
Any MOT, auto service centre or car
dealership interested in being appointed
as a Registration Centre should visit
UNDERTHESPOTLIGHT
Under the Spotlight
Under the Spotlight this month is
Edd China, television presenter,
mechanic, motor specialist and inventor
You are currently working with Petronas; how did the
collaboration begin?
Obviously I do an awful lot of driving, we’ve got vans, 4x4s, Land
Rovers etc, and I haven’t got time to stop. Because Petronas
are at the cutting edge of all the manufacturing technology, it
means we can go stronger for longer and it means I don’t have
to service so much. I am quite happy not having to service my
own vehicles.
Where did it start in the mechanics world for you?
Wow, well I was a Lego kid, so I guess the interest began a long,
long time ago. Realistically though, it seriously began when I
did a degree in engineering and product design; I have been
playing around with vehicles since. I then began getting into
really crazy stuff, an early adventure I remember was when one
day we actually cut the roof off a VW Beetle, then welded the
doors up, covered it with fur and off we went. This got it into
the Top Gear Magazine back in the day as we went on a cruise
to Newquay, things grew from there.
I then started making even crazier vehicles including driving
sofa beds, all this kind of stuff. Then somehow along the way
this led us to being asked to do a show called Panic Mechanic
on BBC2, which became a success relatively quickly. Then some
guys we worked with previously had one of those light bulb
moments for a new idea, which initially was called Grand Autos
as a working title, we know it as Wheeler Dealers of course.
It was saving old and repairable enthusiasts vehicles, and as the
say the rest is history as I haven’t stopped working since.
What is your ideal car to work on?
That is quite tricky as I have lots of cool stuff to play around
with. The sofa car was fantastic, in fact just before all the
madness of the COVID pandemic happened we were on a very
long journey with it from L.A. to San Francisco and back again,
but I had a continuous overheating problem on the vehicle. I
was working on it almost every day just to complete the planned
journey. We also got some old 100-year-old Cadillac’s, on one
of my last episodes of Wheeler Dealers, that were due to go on
the Peking to Paris rally, which is 9000 miles over 35 days. I got
to customise these century old cars as if I was an Edwardian
gent back in the day, so that was awesome.
What car would you put in Room 101?
Well there are plenty that deserve it I guess. I think the Capri
that we did on Wheeler Dealers, that definitely needs to go into
Room 101. The morning we were working on it they turn up with
some wings that were for two different model years, I told them
they wouldn’t work, but of course the reply was well you are
going to have to do it!
Putting on my thinking cap, I managed to bash it around, well
bash it around a lot to make it fit, but then of course we had
to paint it. It didn’t help that it was the hottest day of the year
and, as you can imagine, putting on the lacquer with
the rattle can was a nightmare as it was almost like
sandpaper, it was a horrible, horrible finish, so I would
be very happy to never see that Capri again.
What is your ideal road trip?
Driving the sofa down the pacific coast highway was
absolutely epic, it is an amazing road anyway, and we
have done it in lots of other vehicles, but to do it in
the sofa was something really special. You get so much
more visceral; you can smell the Euclid’s and all these
really amazing trees as you are driving through Big-Sur
and all those kinds of places. It was just a really epic
adventure; one I will never forget.
You are well known for breaking world records,
are there anymore on the horizon?
Well, our last attempt was the world’s fastest all
electric ice cream van, we got the record at the time,
and then the boys at Top Gear decided they were
going to have a go and they took it from us.
So obviously we have got to get that record back.
We have a new vehicle to use to break the record in
too, a 1972 Bedford CF, which were the
really cute Ice Cream vans. We are going to
attempt to get that to 99 miles per hour,
because let’s be honest, you have to do 99
right, it just makes sense in the ice cream
world?
Finally, away from the motoring,
what are your other interests?
I don’t have that much time, but I do like
fixing stuff, and I like understanding how
things work. Which will be handy in
the new show, Workshop Diaries on
YouTube, as we are trying to stretch
out from just cars and attempt,
INTERVIEW
The Garage talks
all things INA
with Schaeffler
REPXPERT,
James Mainwaring
As one of Schaeffler’s renowned REPXPERTs,
30 year old James Mainwaring provides training
and advice to help workshops grow their
understanding of developing vehicle technology
and the replacement products they are
installing.
A genuine car enthusiast, whose favourite car
is the classic, Japanese old school Nissan 240Z,
James is a trained engineer with a huge amount
of practical knowledge. He also has a great
rapport with technicians, which is obviously
a key requirement for every REPXPERT.
James has been with Schaeffler for three and a half years and,
in addition to his training responsibilities, he and his REPXPERT
colleagues also proactively investigate new applications in order
to pre-empt future issues and rectify them before they become
major problems.
“Schaeffler’s philosophy is to provide the independent aftermarket
with a complete original equipment (OE) repair solution that
includes not just OE replacement parts, but also relevant technical
instructions and unrivalled support through comprehensive
education and training.
“So, in common with every Schaeffler brand, the INA programme
encompasses all these elements to provide workshops with a
complete solution for all their power transmission – timing belt,
chain and auxiliary drive system requirements.
“The benefits of this approach are many, but in purely practical
terms it means that technicians have all the OE replacement parts
in one box, including all necessary ancillary components such as
studs, nuts and circlips and, where needed, water pumps. This
allows them to carry out a professional repair quickly, efficiently and
successfully, and crucially, to the standards stipulated by the vehicle
manufacturer (VM).
“However, in order to provide the additional support that
technicians need to complete a first rate repair, alongside its OE
quality parts, Schaeffler created the REPXPERT service programme
www.repxpert.co.uk. With the catchphrase ‘By experts. For experts’,
it’s designed to equip professional mechanics with the information
they need to make all repairs simpler and more efficient, from
standard belt replacements to more complex thermal management
system replacements.
“Utilising REPXPERT, allows independent workshops to compete on
a level playing field with the VM affiliated dealer networks because,
as well as the full INA timing belt installation instructions for example,
it also provides them with data such as correct torque values,
sets out any special tools that are required and gives them the VM
derived labour times, to accurately cost and carry out the repair.
“Education is a central theme throughout the site, with the
online training section providing a huge library of INA installation
instructions and videos from my fellow REPXPERT technical trainers.
Much of this information comes in response to already known
warranty claims and, following the pattern of these failures, and
through rigorous investigation, we find the solution to the underlying
problem.
“Two good examples that emphasise this point are the timing belt
on the Ford Lynx engine and tensioner stud on many VW 1.9 and
2.0-litre diesel applications.
“While the Lynx engine appears a simple set up, with just a belt
and tensioner, technicians have to follow a strict procedure and
use special tools. So, to give them the instruction they need, we
purchased an engine and created a video – https://www.repxpert.
co.uk/en/online-training/page-ds28032 – to illustrate the exact
fitting process and highlight some of the pitfalls that they can
potentially encounter.
“The infamous VW stud, because it is not easy to replace, is
18 THE GARAGE
18,19 Schaeffler.indd 1 16/09/2021 14:30

INTERVIEW
often ignored, and sometimes not even included
in competitor kits. As the stud is an OE service
replacement part, it is obviously included in the
INA KIT, therefore we developed a special VAG
Stud Tool – https://www.repxpert.co.uk/en/
online-training/cmsitem-00097521 – which allows
technicians to check the stud clearance after it
has been replaced, to make sure it has been fitted
correctly. In keeping with REPXPERT best practice,
this solution allows technicians to complete a full,
VM compliant, timing system replacement.
“So, as you can see, REPXPERT is an invaluable
platform for professional technicians that want
to stay ahead of the game, learning about new
and future technologies, and helping to protect
the long-term future of their business. It also
continues to evolve, with members now able to
access many popular features, plus some new and
unique ones, directly from their mobile device by
using the REPXPERT app.
“App users can search for vehicles by
registration number or application, or for
specific parts by OE, competitor and Schaeffler
references. They can even scan the barcode
on any INA packaging to see all of the vehicle
application, product and service information
available for that specific repair solution.
“The REPXPERT app has been a huge benefit to
many businesses, giving technicians quick and easy
access to technical information directly from their
own devices, reducing the need for sharing a PC in
the workshop.
“When it comes to training, another area
synonymous with Schaeffler, we have experts
around the country who attend technical events
and training days to help technicians overcome
troublesome installations. All of this content is
naturally under constant review to ensure they
are relevant and addressing the most current and
important issues that workshops are facing.
“Before the lockdown, we introduced REPXPERT
Academy LIVE, a series of free of charge events
that encompasses four 45-minute sessions,
designed not only to help technicians tackle
more challenging applications, but also allow
them to get a grasp of evolving technology in the
latest vehicles. This is another demonstration of
Schaeffler’s ongoing commitment to the industry.
“It is worth reinforcing the message that
everything on the REPXPERT site is completely
free, technicians just need to enter their workshop
details and then validate their registration in
the resulting confirmation email. They will then
become a REPXPERT member, with all the
privileges and opportunities this provides.
“Members can, for example, redeem the bonus
points found inside Schaeffler product boxes for
an even more diverse range of content, such as
P-codes, service schedules, diagnostics, steering
geometries and torque values for non Schaefflerrelated
systems. Points can also be spent in the
Bonus Shop, which has a range of workshop tools,
clothing and point-of-sale materials.
“Members also receive regular e-newsletters
(make sure you tick the box during registration),
updating them on the latest Schaeffler product
news, training and bonus shop offers from the OE
manufacturer and supplier.”
The Classic Bank Holiday weekend
is coming in 2022
• New date confirmed for The Classic at Silverstone in 2022
• Retro racing family festival switches to popular August Bank Holiday weekend
• End-of-summer celebration to offer even more entertainment for all ages
• Tickets on sale later this year in good time for Christmas
Furthering its credentials as one of
the UK’s premier fun-fuelled family
festivals – as well as the world’s
biggest retro racing celebration – The
Classic is moving to an exciting new August
Bank Holiday date in 2022 (26-28 August).
As ever the record-breaking displays
of privately-owned classic cars and
unrivalled line-up of retro races from all
of motor racing’s golden eras will be right
at the heart of The Classic event, with
feverish qualifying sessions followed by a
programme of spectacular showdowns
across three packed days.
Featuring the cream of Europe’s finest
historic racing grids, the races will be
set on the famous Silverstone Grand Prix
circuit, which will also continue to witness
massive parades honouring key marque and
model milestones.
As well as enhancing its global reputation
as the epicentre of historic racing, in
recent years The Classic has become
a massive family attraction, providing
entertainment for all generations to enjoy
at the home of British motor racing.
While lovers of automotive nostalgia
always revel in all the great competition
and road cars from yesteryear, others
immerse themselves in the off-track
festivities – the vast majority included
absolutely free in the price of admission.
Fun fair rides, crazy golf on the buzzing
Village Green, dramatic stunt driving
displays plus a massive shopping village are
now very much part of the supplementary
show at The Classic, as is the lure of live
music from chart-topping bands.
With so much to enjoy, it is no surprise
that record numbers are now turning The
Classic into a fashionable ‘staycation’ and
spending the entire weekend at Silverstone.
“By switching The Classic to the August
Bank Holiday weekend we are expanding
what’s already an incredible family festival
to create a fabulous end-of-summer
celebration,” explained Nick Wigley, CEO
of The Classic’s promoter Goose Live
Events. “Holiday weekends are always
very special and now The Classic will offer
both petrolheads and fun-lovers a brilliant
opportunity to maximise the much-loved
three-day break.”
Full details of The Classic 2022 will be
announced in the coming months with
tickets going on sale in good time for
Christmas.
How Workshops Can Stay Ahead
The Garage has teamed up with
leading battery management
specialist Ken Clark, from Rotronics,
the UK distributor of Midtronics and
CTEK battery technology, to share some
easy and swift tests to build into routine
and service inspections to provide
excellent customer service and revenue
opportunities. This information is based
on extensive data gathering in the prelockdown
Rotronics online portal, ROBIS , acting
as an additional member of the team,
gathering battery data 24/7.
Ken Clark says: “1.4 million battery tests
from independent workshops and main
the ROBIS portal, from January 2019 to the
present-day. This has given a real insight
into what’s happened to vehicle batteries
in that time and what are the clear battery
charging opportunities for independent
workshops and main dealers.
“From this data, we know that prelockdown,
around 28% of batteries
in a good condition, with 10% requiring
replacement.
The picture changed significantly
NEWS
To achieve this, the Rotronics team
recommends offering a Battery Test
and Charge service, and this should be
available to every vehicle being looked
after.
• Every battery should be tested using
a diagnostic battery tester. Do a visual
inspection, checking for obvious signs of
corrosion or damaged clamps and
leads
• Tell the customer if the battery is a)
Good – ie it is fully charged and no
action is required or b) requires
charging or c) is faulty and needs
replacing
• Keep batteries above 12.5V, checking
the electrolyte levels. Once the
batteries are charged, make sure that
the charging system is working as it
should
Rotronics would be delighted to talk
you through these opportunities or any
NGK to relocate
Japanese head office
The move will take place in April 2022,
with the new headquarters located
at the ‘URBANNET NAGOYA nexta
BUILDING’ in Higashisakura, Higashi-ku,
Nagoya City.
The relocation is a further step
in the company’s 2030 Long-Term
Management Plan, ‘NITTOKU BX’, which
provides a framework for the complete
transformation of NGK Spark Plug into an
environmentally sustainable company for a
wide variety of future needs.
This plan includes the development
of a ‘new way of working’ that involves a
flexible work environment. In addition, it
will facilitate the creation of innovations
based on new ideas, as well as the breaking
down of organisational, communication
and external barriers, to create diverse
points of contact. These new premises are
designed to meet the goals of ‘NITTOKU
BX’.
Situated between the 16th–19th floors
of the URBANNET NAGOYA nexta BUILDING
– which is currently under construction
– the new global head office will cover
a total of 4400m2. The new, easy-toaccess
premises will be equipped with a
café, a showroom and stress-free internet
connections. More open communication
and targeted zoning of the floors will be
hallmarks of the new headquarters, as
the company strives to further accelerate
innovation.
In addition, the new head office will be
home to many major new initiatives. These
include a face recognition security system,
a transition to a paperless way of working
and the introduction of a ‘Dokodemo
Extension System’ that facilitates calls from
home or on business trips. Moreover, nonterritorial
workspaces will be present on all
floors and office space will include a green
visibility rate of at least 10% to reduce
stress and fatigue.
NGK Spark Plugs (UK) Ltd Managing
Director Marko Wowczyna said: “The
relocation of our global head office
functions to the URBANNET NAGOYA nexta
BUILDING in Nagoya perfectly symbolises
the transformative path we are on.
“This new state-of-the-art facility is
designed with our 2040 vision – ‘Beyond
ceramics, eXceeding imagination’ – in
mind. The new head office will help us
strengthen various corporate functions as
the company changes drastically beyond
the current way.”
The new premises will house around
500 employees. Remote work will be
promoted, with the number of office
seats reduced to 70% of the full capacity.
The departments present at the building
will include the Strategic Headquarters
(Digital Transformation [DX], Corporate
Strategy, Strategic Human Resources etc.),
Business Partner Companies (General
Administration, Personnel Labour,
Accounting & Finance, Supply Chain
Management [SCM] etc.), Secretarial Office
and Mobility Business Company (MBC).
A decision regarding the use of the
previous Mizuho-ku head office after the
relocation has not yet been made as some
functions will remain in the previously
used building. There will be no impact on
production due to the relocation. The
company’s legal registration address,
however, will continue to be 14-18
Takatsuji-cho, Mizuho-ku, Nagoya 467-
NEWS
ATS Euromaster expands mobile van fleet
and hires new technicians to meet demand
Tyre service and maintenance provider, ATS Euromaster, is investing in its
mobile van fleet to meet surging demand for mobile servicing.
So far 30 new vans have been added to
its fleet in 2021, with a further increase
expected before the end of the year,
bringing the total fleet of mobile vans to 155.
ATS Euromaster says it has seen demand
for its mobile fleet consistently increase,
running at 10% above average each month
from October 2020 through to July
2021. To date, it is meeting the increased
requirement through greater operator
efficiency thanks to improved on-job
training, but says it is now actively recruiting
to upstaff its mobile service.
Mark Holland, Operations Director at
ATS Euromaster, said: “There’s no question
that the increase we have seen for mobile
delivery provision, and the constant vehicle
uptime required to deliver items, has been
behind the increase in demand for our
mobile service.
“Thanks to the growing efficiency of our
mobile technicians, we have been able to
meet this increased demand to date, but
now we feel it is time to invest in increasing
our fleet size and new staff. We don’t
expect mobile deliveries, particularly from
the established supermarkets, to decrease
as the scale of the pandemic subsides. Quite
the contrary, we expect it to continue at the
current levels, which in turn will put further
demand for our services to ensure secure
fleet uptime.
“Most of the requests we are seeing
are for emergency tyre repair. But we
are attempting to work with the bigger
van fleets to prioritise maintenance work
during vehicle downtime at night to provide
a balance and retain service levels for all
customers throughout the day.”
ATS Euromaster says that its Mastercare
service, where the company undertakes
pre-planned tyre inspection and remedial
work at a time that is convenient for fleets
and limits fleet downtime, is also expanding.
For one customer alone they complete
over 5500 vehicle checks, for instance. The
increasingly successful service means that
ATS Euromaster is also trialling new working
hours for its employees, including dedicated
night-time technicians.
All of the new technicians coming onto
the ATS Euromaster mobile service fleet
receive car and van training, along with new
electric vehicle high voltage use modules,
and a specialist roadside course.
The new lower emission vans are all fitted
with a brand-new electric compressor,
which not only offers substantial fuel cost
savings against traditional diesel-powered
compressors, but offers zero emissions as
well. The compressor batteries are charged
by the vehicle when the van is driving.
All mobile fitting vans are also equipped
with the specialist jacks required to change
wheels on the popular Tesla Model 3
electric car.
Mark added: “The pandemic has totally
changed the dynamics of fleet support as
the volume of home deliveries continues to
increase. Fortunately, we have been leading
the market for many many years with our
mobile fleet. We are now responding to this
changing demand with newer and better
equipped vans, more specially trained
technicians, and night-time servicing to
ensure optimal fleet uptime performance.
It’s all part of our commitment to ensure
the highest level of service to the fleet
customers we support.”
manufacturer highlighted the fact that workshops and garages
are seeing increasing numbers of vehicles fitted with a Battery
Management System (BMS). No longer exclusive to premium
vehicles, these systems monitor a vehicle’s battery throughout its
life to maintain optimum charge efficiency and operation of the
Start-Stop system.
If fitted, it is essential to reprogram the BMS via the on-board
diagnostics (OBD) port following the installation of a replacement
battery. Failure to correctly reprogram the BMS or fit the correct
specification battery, e.g. AGM or EFB can lead to a number
of problems. These include general system faults, in-car error
messages and complete loss of the Start-Stop functionality.
Already a mainstay of workshops across Europe, the Yu-Fit has
proved incredibly popular with workshop technicians due to its
compact form factor, robust design and fantastic value for money.
Designed with optimum user experience in mind, the GS Yuasa Yu-
it one of the most user-friendly battery validation tools on the
market.
David Shield, General Manager Engineering (Automotive &
no longer a five-minute task. In fact, battery configuration is fast
becoming the norm. To ensure it’s both a quick and easy task –
the GS Yuasa Yu-Fit has been specifically designed to be one of
the most user-friendly tools available. So quick in fact, battery
validation can typically be achieved in less than 60 seconds!”
“When looking to overhaul the Yu-Fit, we were keen to ensure
we maintained the robust design and simple operation. The Yu-Fit
offers fantastic value for money and is widely regarded as one of
the easiest to use diagnostic tools on the market. Although garages
may already own diagnostic equipment, to have such a centrally
important tool tied up on a relatively straightforward task is not
INA auxiliary belt system product range
grows to include even more agricultural
vehicle applications
• New Tractor FEAD kits offer complete repair solution
• Genuine OE quality at competitive prices
• Growing range provides even greater coverage
Schaeffler, the original equipment (OE)
component and system manufacturer,
has further extended its range of INA
Front End Auxiliary Drive system (FEAD)
products, as it adds more belts, tensioners,
idlers and complete kits to suit multiple
manufacturers and model applications.
Although the belts, tensioners and idlers
can be purchased separately, the most
cost-effective solution is to purchase all
parts as a kit in just one box, which is also in
line with Schaeffler’s best practice principle
of replacing all system elements at the same
time to help avoid costly follow-on repairs.
The new components and kits cover many
popular tractor applications and the range
is continuously expanding, so choosing an
OE solution at a competitive price is now a
reality for agricultural vehicle technicians.
The FEAD range covers manufacturers such
as John Deere, Case IH, New Holland,
Massey Ferguson, Fendt, JCB and Same
Deutz-Fahr.
As Schaeffler always emphasises, it is
essential for those responsible for the
upkeep of costly agricultural equipment to
not only comply with the manufacturer’s
service schedule, but to frequently check
the condition of the belt and pulley system
to try and identify any signs of wear. This
will help ensure the ongoing reliability of
the machinery and reduce the likelihood of
unproductive downtime caused by a failure
in the system.
To help engineers understand a few of
the issues caused by a worn belt, Schaeffler
has usefully produced a short video https://
www.youtube.com/watch?v=bSzw5lMfQDk
that highlights some of the symptoms that
can arise, such as overheating, battery
failure and the illumination of engine
warning lights on the dash.
INA belt drive components are
manufactured to exacting OE specifications,
which means that engineers can fit them
with confidence in the knowledge that they
will maintain the same performance and
reliability as the original parts, as well as
deliver a cost-effective and long-lasting
repair solution.
CLAAS
honours HELLA
as “Supplier of
the Year 2020”
Agricultural machinery
manufacturer CLAAS pays
special tribute to HELLA’s
high innovative strength
At the end of April 2021, HELLA,
the internationally positioned
automotive supplier, was presented
with the “Supplier of the Year” Award in
the Innovation category, by the agricultural
machinery manufacturer CLAAS. With this
award, the company acknowledges the
high degree of transparency and initiative
in the development of new lighting and
electronic solutions. This year, for the first
time, the award for the best suppliers took
place online via a web conference.
For several decades now, HELLA and
CLAAS have been working together to
develop innovative and tailor-made
lighting and electronic components,
from prototype to pre-series to series
production. “I would like to thank
the entire HELLA team for their great
commitment to serving this important
customer for us,” said Kristian Vuksan,
Director Global Sales Agricultural, Turf
and Utility Machines during the event.
“This award is a great honour for us and
validates our ability to transfer innovative
technologies from the automotive sector
to our heavy duty customer segment.
This motivates us even more to continue
to develop and implement designdriven
solutions in a modular manner
in conjunction with smaller production
volumes.”
In the near future, HELLA will be
launching innovative developments such
as matrix illumination for the agricultural
and construction machinery sector, as
well as smart work lamps. The transfer
and adaptation of technology and
quality know-how from the automotive
sector, forms the basis for the high
competitiveness in terms of costs and
innovations.
HELLA launches new S-series work lamps
The new work lamp series offers innovative LED technology at the best value for money
HELLA, the internationally positioned
automotive supplier, is launching a new
work lamp series for agricultural machinery,
construction machinery, forklifts, trucks,
trailers and municipal vehicles, which
complements the existing Modul 70, Modul
90 and Power Beam work lamp families. “The
central goal was to develop a high-quality
yet affordable LED work lamp. To this end,
our many years of experience and lighting
expertise have been incorporated into the
development phase to bring a product onto
the road that is optimised in every respect
and is ‘simple, steady and streamlined’”,
says Stefan Maierhofer, the product manager
responsible for work lamps at HELLA. “So,
the new S-series work lamps are easy to
retrofit, consistently withstand the operating
conditions and offer excellent value for
money.”
The S-series work lamps provide
homogeneous illumination with a colour
temperature of around 6,500 Kelvin, which
is similar to daylight. Compared to halogen
devices, the S- series scores points for
its high efficiency thanks to its excellent
lumen-watt performance. It continuously
fulfils the highest EMC requirements. There
is another advantage: vehicle manufacturers
can use the product to give their vehicles a
unique appearance, because the company’s
logo can be integrated into the reflector if
desired.
The work lamp is available round and
square and as surface-mounted and flushmounted
versions. Thanks to the universal
and slim design, vehicle manufacturers can
easily and quickly convert their existing
halogen headlamps to LED technology. The
work lamp is produced in Austria according
to the latest technological standards and
the housing and the lens are made of
special plastics, which reduces the weight
and provides a high level of corrosion
resistance. The new cooling fin design is not
only modern, but also ensures optimum
heat dissipation, which increases the
efficiency and lifetime of the work lamps.
The integrated thermal management also
helps to further increase the work lamp’s
lifetime. The work lamps produce their full
light output at an ambient temperature
between -40°C and +50°C. If there is a risk
of overheating, the work lamp automatically
dims.
The S-series work lamps are available in
close-range and long-range illumination.
Versions of 1,000 lumens will be launched
in early summer, followed by 2,000 lumen
products in autumn. A 4,000 lumen
version of the Modul 90 S-series will also
be available at the end of the year. Further
model and illumination variants are already
in development.
Concept transformed to successful reality for agricultural sector
PartsforMachines.com - which
aims to become the first one
Agriculture and Plant machinery -
has just celebrated its first half year
of trading and is looking forward
optimistically to the future.
The concept of top brands being
delivered to the doorstep of farmers
or construction companies/sites
has found a ready market and the level
of business transacted has steadily risen
since Parts for Machines’ inception.
“In just six months of trading, we’ve
now well passed the 500-order mark and
have a 5* rating on TrustPilot,” enthuses
Parts for Machines Press Officer, Simon
Maurice. “We understand that we are
dealing with people whose business relies
on us to be able to deliver what they
need, when they need it. This means
that, with PartsforMachines.com, our
customer interaction doesn’t end when
they’ve placed the order. If they need us
we are there for them and this is one of
the aspects of PartsForMachines.com’s
progress that really pleases everyone
involved. We would like to say a huge thank
you to everyone who has ordered and
reviewed us!”
The customer experience has always
been one of the focal points with Parts for
Machines and it is shortly going to be able
to offer a much-upgraded service with
two of its biggest brands.
From September, its search facilities
for Yuasa batteries will be considerably
enhanced in terms of finding the right
battery for the right make and model
of equipment with, henceforward,
a dedicated search widget for Yuasa
batteries.
It is a similar story with Astrak, who
supply undercarriage parts for tracked
machines. Parts for Machines has recently
increased its references almost 20-fold,
now offering more than Astrak 35,000
lines - the most diverse range possible -
and again, it is backed up by an improved
search function on the site to reflect this.
General user-friendliness for the
platform has also been enhanced with a
new Frequently Asked Questions facility
that should help the customer journey
- although the opportunity for personal
interaction has by no means diminished,
and remains a key facility for users of the
PartsforMachines platform.
PartsforMachines.com is still expanding
agricultural tyre range
• Combine harvester tyres VF CombineMaster
• Sizes 620/70R26 and 750/65R26 joined the range
in May 2021
• Innovative VF technology ensures reliability
in harvesting operations
Continental has added two additional
sizes to the VF CombineMaster
agricultural tyre portfolio. Following
the successful uptake of the first three sizes
since the launch in 2020, the 620/70R26
and 750/65R26 sizes have been added
to complement the range. “The new tyre
sizes are designed for the steering axles of
harvesters and for all positions on loader
wheels. The HexaBead technology helps
the tyre to grip the rim at lower pressures
which can help to reduce soil compaction,”
says Continental agricultural tyre specialist,
Richard Hutchins.
VF CombineMaster: a reliable partner
on and off the field
Combine harvesters have to withstand both
cyclical loads in the field and high speeds
on the road. “Even outside the harvesting
season, agricultural machinery is needed off
the field, for example, to clear snow in the
winter,” he says. “On muddy ground, the VF
CombineMaster offers great traction when
loading and can be used with 40 percent less
tyre pressure for the same load as a standard
tyre, which helps to reduce soil compaction
or can carry 40 percent higher load at the
recommended pressure,” he adds.
HexaBead and VF technology offer
greater flexibility and stability
The VF CombineMaster offers exceptionally
high core strength due to HexaBead
core technology. The hexagonal bead
core allows the carcass material to wrap
around the bead in a more effective way,
which improves power transmission. “The
HexaBead core design also maximises the
load capacity of the carcass. The technology
was developed specifically for combine front
tyres and loaders and ensures high torque
transfer from the rim to the tyre,” he adds.
VF tyres not only enable farmers to save
time and fuel, but also help to reduce soil
compaction. VF technology allows the tyre
to be used at lower air pressure. This means
that the tyre can be driven without pressure
adjustment to the weight of the load and
the ground without degradation. Thus, VF
tyres deliver a constant load capacity even
at high speeds and, compared to standard
tyres, allow a reduction in tyre pressure
while maintaining the same performance.
In addition, the combination of patented
N.flex technology and innovative d.fine lug
technology ensures very good flexibility
with low vibration at the carcass and high
resistance to wear.
Case IH Vestrum, Maxxum and Puma
tractor series are now available with
Continental TractorMaster and VF
TractorMaster tyres. The original equipment
manufacturer (OEM) partnership is the
fourth Continental has secured since
relaunching its agricultural tyre range in
2017. “It started with approvals from John
Deere and Fendt, then Valtra and now
Case,” says agricultural tyre specialist
Richard Hutchins.
The OEM approval means Continental
TractorMaster tyres are indicated in the
price lists enabling customers to specify
Continental tyres for their Case IH tractor.
“TractorMaster tyres feature unique
N.flex technology and have d.fine lug
design which both help to provide greater
resilience in the field and improved ride
comfort on the road,” he says.
VF technology is growing in popularirty
because the tyre enables the vehicle
to carry forty percent more load than
a standard tyre at the same pressure.
Alternatively, in the field, the pressure of
VF tyres can be lowered by forty percent
compared to standard tyres, even when
carrying the same load. “TractorMaster VF
tyres offer operational efficiencies, reduce
fuel consumption, and spread the weight
of the vehicle over a larger surface area
to help reduce soil compaction,” says Mr
Hutchins.
GREEN PARTS
Just how much can they benefit you and your business?
In our day-to-day lives we’re increasingly
told to strive to be more eco-friendly and
sustainable. We’ll openly try to reduce
our single-use plastic, recycle more and
waste less. But how does this transfer into
the business world? What can automotive
professionals do to improve their business
impact? Reclaimed OE car parts, which are
more commonly known as green parts, are
becoming increasingly accepted when it
comes to repairing or refurbishing vehicles.
With only around six per cent of customers
not fully understanding the key benefits of
using green parts, the industry as a whole is
beginning to utilise what essentially is already
there for the taking. But just how can using
these green parts benefit your business?
There are a plethora of reasons why
automotive professionals should begin
buying and selling green automotive parts,
here are a few of the key benefits…
Low cost for high quality
The biggest business benefit of using green
parts for both garage and customer is the
overall cost. Cars continue to advance in
both design and digitisation and therefore
the cost of brand new parts is rising at
an uneasy rate compared to their green
counterparts. So purely with cost in mind,
purchasing a green part seems like the
obvious choice – this where quality is key.
Contrary to popular perceptions, buying
a green part doesn’t have to mean that that
the quality is compromised. Independently
certified automotive recyclers who can give
assurance of the quality of their parts and
provide warranties are those who can be
trusted to deliver the standard of part that’s
advertised.
Reduced key-to-key times
Another huge advantage of purchasing
green parts is that they are ready to send
to the buyer. Automotive recyclers who are
advertising green parts already have the
parts in stock rather than waiting for them to
be shipped in from the manufacturer. Which
means that as soon as they are bought, they
can be sent to the buyer. What this means is
that key-to-key times can not only be better
managed, but can actually be reduced when
seamless delivery options are available.
Not only does this make the automotive
professional’s work just that extra bit easier,
but it means that better relationships can be
formed getting customers back on the road
quickly.
Save carbon emissions
In a recent survey, 77% of people who
purchase green parts said they do so
because of the environmental benefits.
Those benefits being that recycled car parts
make a positive impact on the environment,
research estimates that if all insurance
demand had been filled by recycling parts
in 2019 nearly 47,000 tonnes of carbon
emissions could have been saved. Part of
the way that energy is reduced with recycled
car parts is that there isn’t a need to
manufacture or transport new parts. Equally,
by finding another use for a part, it stops it
from needlessly ending up on a landfill site.
How is eBay ensuring consumer
confidence when purchasing green
parts?
eBay’s new Green Parts for Business
platform, which was made specifically with
automotive professionals in mind, is the
UK’s largest online aggregator of green parts
from only independently certified sellers -
and is bridging the gap between consumer
confidence and purchasing green parts.
When developing the platform, eBay
collaborated with the Vehicle Recycling
Association (VRA) to establish a certification
scheme, which ensures all automotive
recyclers meet a professional standard.
Users of the platform are able to buy and sell
green OE automotive parts with peace of
mind during every step of the process.
Laura Richards, Senior Business
Development Manager, Vehicle Parts &
Accessories, at eBay explains: “During an
initial trial period we found professionals
in the industry wanted the full trade
experience when buying vehicle parts. This
includes allowing the option for different
finance options and warranty options
among many other things. All of which our
new platform aims to achieve with its user
purchasing journey.”
eBay Green Parts for Business is now
available for businesses big and small. When
you register, choose from thousands of
green parts from independently certified
sellers for your peace of mind purchasing.
Do your bit for the planet while you save time
THEENGINE
Dayco timing belt kits
the complete solution
Dayco, a leading engine products
and drive systems supplier for
the automotive, industrial and
aftermarket industries, supplies a number
of important, original equipment (OE)
components, to vehicle manufacturers (VMs)
across Europe and beyond.
In addition, as an established power
transmission system expert, it is a preferred
partner for many VMs and its considerable
expertise has enabled it to develop highly
efficient solutions for their many and varied
needs, particularly as they try to meet the
emissions targets demanded by governments
around the world.
Among these many product developments
is the Dayco High Tenacity (HT) or ‘white’
belt, which, with its PTFE film on its inner
teeth and fibreglass core, has become the
mainstay timing belt for many engine variants
used for multiple applications by numerous
VMs.
When faced with a timing belt
replacement, the only way to replicate
the quality of the OE belt is to fit another
white belt, which is only possible by fitting
Dayco. So, for the peace-of-mind of the
owner, as well as the most profitable result
for the workshop, a full timing drive system
replacement is the only option.
Dayco’s commitment is to provide
technicians with timing belt kits that, in
addition to the normal belts, tensioners and
idlers, also contain all the other components
that the VM specifies need to be replaced
during the vehicle’s scheduled change
interval. This not only helps the technicians
undertaking the work, it also provides
peace-of-mind for workshops because a full
system overhaul has been able to be carried
out.
Among these additional items are
crankshaft pulley bolts, which when
specified for replacement is usually because
they are stretch bolts and therefore, for
safety reasons, must not be reused. To
provide the greatest level of transparency,
Dayco distinguishes these kits with the letter
‘K’ at the end of the part number.
“In order for them to complete a full and
thorough repair, it is vital that technicians
replace all the components and ancillary
items such as nuts, bolts, studs and circlips
that the manufacturer has stipulated must
be changed at the designated service
interval,” explains Dayco’s National Sales
Manager, Steve Carolan.
“Although without access to the
manufacturer’s service and repair
information, it is sometimes difficult for
technicians to find the precise details of
which additional items this requirement
applies to, we have made things considerably
easier for them by including all the items
that need to be replaced in the kit. So, the
message is: ‘If it’s in the box, it must be
changed’.
“OE derived components provide
workshops with a number of tangible
benefits from premium quality and fit first
time installation, to increased durability
and reduced warranty claims. In addition
however, when they fit an HT water pump/
timing belt kit, Dayco can also provide them
with an even greater level of reassurance
by offering the opportunity to extend the
existing two-year warranty by a further year.
“The Long Life +1 year warranty is a
perfect example of how Dayco’s technology
can provide workshops with a ‘real-world’
competitive advantage over those fitting
other brands. It also gives the motorist a
level of protection that cannot often be
matched, even by the franchised dealer.
“So, the combination of guaranteed OE
quality products and product support such
as the Long Life +1 year warranty, makes
Dayco a great choice for workshops.”
Technical Tips
There are numerous tips that Dayco
recommends technicians bear in mind
to promote best practice when replacing
primary and auxiliary drive components,
amongst others, these include:
• ensure the engine is cool, ideally not run f
or at least four hours
• the working area air temperature should
be around 20 0 C, the same as the parts to
be installed
• disconnect the battery
• if needed, remove the spark plugs
• only rotate the engine in its normal
operating direction
• ensure that replacement belts are treated
with respect and not handled with greasy
hands, crimped or otherwise damaged
before installation
• when fitting a replacement water pump,
sealing compound should only be used
when the gasket is not included, otherwise
just wet the mating surfaces and the
supplied gasket with coolant
• as Dayco kits contain all the components
that VMs state must be changed in a
ccordance with the specific service
procedure, technicians must fit all the
components supplied in the relevant
Dayco timing or auxiliary belt kit, during
the replacement process
• specific torque sequences and values must
be followed
In short, the basic principle for technicians
is to simply follow the VM’s instructions,
without adding ‘just in case’ additions like
lots of sealer or thread adhesive etc. In
other words, don’t improvise and fit it the
way they think is best, just follow the VM
directive, which is best.
Addison Howe is appointed new
Field Sales Manager at Morris Lubricants
Morris Lubricants has been blending and supplying quality lubricants in
Shrewsbury for over 150 years. One of the main factors of the company’s
longevity is its experienced and dedicated staff who are the back bone of
the business. Morris Lubricants has added to their experienced Sales Team
by appointing Addison Howe as the company’s new Field Sales Manager.
With a proven and impressive track
record of mentoring and sales
teams Addison also brings to his
new role sixteen years of oil, lubricant and
grease industry experience to call upon.
His focus will be to coach the team
of Area Sales Managers so that they can
continue to deliver exceptional customer
service to customers spanning the length
and width of Great Britain.
Addison has always aspired to work
for Morris Lubricants “due to their
absolute and no compromise attitude
towards product quality.” He adds: “This
is reinforced by their close ties with the
UKLA and the VLS. Morris Lubricants are
highly regarded in the marketplace and are
focused on doing the right thing.”
The appointment underlines the
ambitions at Morris Lubricants, which
supplies nationally and internationally to
over 90 countries worldwide, by employing
talented individuals that understand the
company’s ethos of providing industry
leading oil, lubricants and greases as well as
unparallel customer support.
“Morris Lubricants is built on strong
foundations; quality, loyalty, service and
a happy, customer-focused team that
always want to do their best to help,” says
Addison.
“These elements are key to how the
business has grown in the past, and with a
focused approach, we will see the company
go from strength-to-strength.”
Distributed across the UK, the field
sales team work remotely. As lockdown
restrictions continue to ease, Addison will
oversee a safe return to on-site visits for
both the Morris Lubricants team and their
customers. “To keep everyone safe, we will
follow all legal requirements,” he says. “We
respect our customers. If they require us to
do something – whether it’s wearing full PPE
or carrying out a lateral flow test before we
arrive and providing evidence of the result –
we will do it. We will build our relationships
online, over the phone and in person.”
Also critical to success will be
maintaining good relationships with the
Morris Lubricants client base, “We want
to understand a customer requirement
and their business needs at an in-depth
level so we can help them. As soon
as we understand that, it becomes a
business partnership, and a much better
relationship.”
“It has been fantastic to join a company
of Morris Lubricants’ history, reputation
and vision. I’ve already been made to
feel very welcome in part of an already
wonderful team, which I’m looking forward
to being a part of for a long time to come.”
her field, as well as fresh vision for our business.
“2021 has been a really exciting year for us so far. We’ve opened
four new dealerships, our existing sites are hiring and growing, and
we’re introducing new systems to improve our internal processes.
Ben Nevis (1,345m), Scafell Pike (978m)
Coparts team took on the challenge to
Jane Pocock, MD of Copart UK & Ireland,
said: “I’m delighted that Copart was able to
give something back to Ben, whose health
and wellbeing services to our business and
the wider automotive industry have been
invaluable, especially during the challenges
of the pandemic. Not only has this event
been an incredible and unforgettable
experience for our teammates who took
part, but it also demonstrates the strength
of our commitment to caring about good
causes like Ben as part of our ongoing
Copart Cares campaign.”
Matt Wiggington, Director of
Partnerships, Engagement & Income at
“Copart Cares…it really does…and
with every event you complete and every
donation you make, you’re changing and,
in some cases, saving lives of people in our
automotive family. We couldn’t do what
we do without you all. Thanks for all your
support and huge congratulations to the
team that took on the challenge.”
