F E AT U R E A magical adventure A SUTTON COLDFIELD MUM HAS FULFILLED A LIFELONG AMBITION BY PENNING A CHILDREN’S BOOK - INSPIRED BY HER DAUGHTER. AMY NORBURY DISCOVERS MORE AUTHOR CATHERINE HAIR AND HER DAUGHTER IMOGEN, THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THE BOOK Catherine Hair has always loved reading. From a young age, she would immerse herself in the tales of Roald Dahl, the fantastic escapes of Enid Blyton and more. When her daughter Imogen, now five, was born, that love of reading translated into a cherished bedtime routine which would see Catherine and her husband, Nick, deliver not one but three stories each and every night. So perhaps it’s unsurprising that the 41-year-old has always aspired to write a children’s book of her own. When the coronavirus hit the UK early last year, sending the country into lockdown, Catherine decided that it was time to stop dreaming, and start doing. “I was reading stories to Imogen every night and I thought that I’d love to write something which included her, which could be something she’d keep forever,” says Catherine. Catherine started writing her tale during the first lockdown last spring, using the project as a distraction from the chaos of juggling work with homeschooling. “It was a bit full-on, but my husband always says I need a hundred things going on or I get bored,” laughs Catherine. “It was good to have something fun and positive to focus on, to take my mind off the stress of everything! “I’ve always loved writing, ever since I was at school. It was lovely to have a creative outlet, because even though I work in a creative industry, it’s not on the creative side. The book has been a passion project for me; I wanted to show Imogen that if you’re really passionate about something, you can do it.” Catherine’s book tells the tale of Boodle, a magic bedtime bear, and his best friend Imogen, who makes a wish to go to space - just in time for Intergalactic Friendship Day.
