The show, which was due to be held on October 30, will nowrun in aslimmed down version for some exhibitors and competitors only. The Amberley Domain willbeclosed to the public on show day. PresidentAnnette Marr saysthe decision was made last Thursday night as therewas no possibility of the Covid19 AlertLevelreaching1to allowittorun its show as normal and allowthe public in. ‘‘Thecommittee is very conscious of the efforts thatour exhibitors and competitors go to, to prepare for the show, and wanted to continue to provideasmany classes as possible in asafe way. ‘‘We willnot have any trade sites, market sites, food sites, abar or entertainment,as we are unable to do so and comply with Level2Covid19 rules,’’she says. The goats and all horse events will be held,including showing classes, showjumping, stock &station horsesand the miniature horses. Exhibitorswill need to comply withCovidrestrictions and stay in their allocated areasofthe show grounds. All prize money will be direct credited to the winners. However the sheep, pet lambs,dog trials, pet dogs, studentclasses, grain and seed and all classes in the pavilion are cancelled.Arefund of entryfees in these classes willbeprovided. The Taste Hurunui Hoof to Hotplate competition, Alpine Pacific Wine Challenge,Wool, Calves and the new Commercial Beef competitionwill continuetobejudged on farm.A presentation night will be held at the OmihiHall on Friday, October 29 to acknowledge the efforts of all involved. Food demand amystery By DAVID HILL Aspike in demand at Hurunui’s foodbanks during lockdown remains amystery. The district’s three food banks in Waipara, Waikari and Amberley, saw a largespike in demand, jumping from140 to 150 foodboxes amonthto220 during August, Hurunui District Council community activator Roger Hornblow says. In comparison Waimakariri’s food banks experienced only asmall increasein demand. ‘‘I’mataloss to explain it,’’ Mr Hornblow says.‘‘We talked about it at ourFood Secure North Canterburymeeting and we couldn’tcome up withanexplanation. ‘‘When kids aren’t at school and it’s abit cold outside of coursethey’re going to eat amore, butthat’s goingtobethe same in Rangiora and Kaiapoi and thosefood banksdidn’t experience the same spike.’’ Duringlast year’s lockdown, most food banks across the regionexperienceda spike in demand as part of the Hurunui and Waimakariri District Councils’ Civil Defence responses. Figures from last year’s lockdown indicate more than70percent of the Hurunui district’s workforceare essential workers, due largelytothe rural sector. The growing demand in Hurunui has sparked the need for afood storage facility in Amberley, to complement Satisfy Food Rescue’s base in Kaiapoi. Food Secure NorthCanterbury is also working with the Kaiapoi Food Forest to develop food forests in Hanmer Springs and Amberley to support the wider community. ‘‘The shiningstar in all of this is Satisfy, they’ve been outstanding,’’ saysMr Hornblow. Adriel Houseand Rest Home owner Mischeal McCormick says Covid19 restrictions havebeen challengingfor everyone,but at Adriel activities have kept everyone busy and engaged. Adriel is aSparkofLifeCentre of Excellence,which focuses on the quality of the connection between carers and residents, and theirfamilies. It also fosters kindness, compassion, empathy, and respect. Home craftshave beenthe focus at the home overrecentweeks, with produce from the home’s gardensand trees being put to gooduse, along with wood brought in by the staff. One group of residents has been making quincejelly,blackcurrant jam andmarmalade, whileanother hasbeen busy baking. Meanwhile another grouphave been enjoying making food balls for birds, whichare hung fromtrees, and crafting tool boxes. Powertools were not on the agenda of residents. They preferredtouse good old fashioned elbowgrease,sandpaper,and hammer and nails ratherthan noisy moderndaypower tools. Mischeal says afew weeks was spent on the tool boxes, sanding and varnishing them, with the homes maintenance man PhilArmstrong lending support and encouragement. She says the activitiesprompted many to talk about their favouriterecipes and haveconversations about their jam, baking and woodcraftskills from days goneby. ‘‘That is the essence of SparkofLife — to stimulate conversation and memory,’’ she says. Covid19 restrictions havealso curbed engaging with the community to share the bountyoftheir efforts in the kitchen and workshop. Insteadsales tablesinAdrielHouse, and Adriel Rest Home havebeen set up for visitors to buy the goods when they visitfamilymembers. The funds raised go to Dementia Care International. Adrielalso offers daycare for residents to give carers some respite, and is happytohear from people looking for ahomeawayfromhome for theirfamilymembers. ‘‘Weare always there to support our local community and others with advice and education,’’says Mischeal.
